Tralee’s Dr Susan Lawlor Honoured at Female Founder Awards 2026

Tralee native Dr Susan Lawlor has been recognised at the prestigious Female Founder Awards Ireland & Northern Ireland 2026, held at the Thomas Prior Hall in Dublin on May 21st.

Dr Lawlor, founder of State of Mind Ireland, received recognition for her inspiring journey, resilience and commitment to continuing the vision she originally created alongside her late brother, Dr Martin Lawlor, who tragically lost his life in a hit-and-run incident in December 2018. The Female Founder Awards

celebrate women leading purposeful and values-driven businesses across Ireland and Northern Ireland, recognising innovation, leadership, resilience and impact across a wide range of industries. This year’s awards attracted almost 98,000 public votes across all categories. Speaking after receiving the award, Dr Lawlor paid an emotional tribute to her family, particularly her late mother Noreen and her brother Martin.

“This award means so much more than a title,” she said. “Behind

every business is a story, and mine has been built on determination, perseverance and a belief in creating something meaningful, despite the challenges life can bring.”

She described continuing the work of State of Mind Ireland as a way of honouring her brother’s dream and legacy.

“Everything I do now is in honour of my family, especially my son Alexander Jeremiah. I want him to know that no dream is too big and that no obstacle should stop you from achieving what others may

Last Minute Advice for 2026 State Exam Candidates By Billy Ryle

The waiting is almost over for more than 140,000 students nationwide, including over 4,200 in Kerry, as the 2026 State Exams begin on Wednesday, June 3. After months of preparation, candidates can now focus on performing to the best of their ability and collecting the rewards for their hard work. There is encouraging news for this year’s school leavers. A reduction in Leaving Cert points requirements is expected as grades continue to return gradually to normal levels. In addition, there will be strong opportunities across CAO courses, Tertiary Degrees, Further Education, apprenticeships, traineeships and employment options in Ireland’s

thriving economy.

The Leaving Cert exams continue until Tuesday, June 23, while Junior Cycle exams conclude on Monday, June 15, and Leaving Cert Applied exams finish on Thursday, June 11. With temperatures expected to remain unusually high during the exam period, students are advised to take extra care in the sun. Avoid excessive sun exposure, stay hydrated and resist spending long periods sunbathing. Sunburn, dehydration and fatigue are the last things any student needs before an important exam.

Use the remaining days wisely. Focus mainly on first-week subjects and aim to complete major revision by

on key points and exam techniques, while Tuesday should involve only light revision to keep the mind fresh and alert.

Arrive early for each exam, read all instructions carefully and use the full time available. Most importantly, remember the exams

are a marathon, not a sprint. Eat well, rest properly and avoid dwelling on papers once they are finished. Good luck to all candidates sitting exams next week.

Castlegregory Country Market Begins New Chapter in Community Hall

Castlegregory Country Market is preparing for an exciting new chapter after announcing its move to the Community Hall on West Main Street, Castlegregory, as the popular West Kerry market celebrates almost two decades supporting local producers and craftspeople. Previously located on the grounds of the local school, the market’s new home will welcome visitors every Sunday from May 31st through to the end of August, operating from 10am to 1.30pm. Market traders are encouraging the local community and visitors alike to support independent West Kerry businesses at a time when buying local has never been more important. Furniture maker and Market PRO Gary Marcham of Goose Island Workshop said the market continues to stand for sustainability, resilience

and strong community values.

“We live in an increasingly uncertain world, and supporting local businesses helps strengthen communities while encouraging self-sufficiency and sustainability,” he said. A key feature of the market is that every trader makes, bakes or grows their own products, giving customers direct access to authentic local produce, crafts and handmade goods. Traders say the market has also become an important social hub in West Kerry, bringing people together each weekend while showcasing the creativity and talent within the local community. To celebrate the move and the market’s continued growth, organisers say a number of special events and customer promotions will be announced over the summer months.

Energywise Ireland manages projects from initial consultation and grant guidance through to installation and aftercare support, working with SMEs, commercial clients, agricultural enterprises and homeowners nationwide.

The company is also a registered SEAI One Stop Shop provider, helping homeowners simplify the retrofit process while accessing available grants.

QUESTION:

“Why do I feel more aches, cramps, and stiffness during hot weather even when I haven’t exercised more?”

"With temperatures rising during the current heat wave, staying hydrated is more important than ever for maintaining healthy muscles and joints. In hot weather, the body loses fluids and electrolytes more quickly through sweating, increasing the risk of dehydration.

Even mild dehydration can contribute to muscle fatigue, cramping, stiffness, and reduced flexibility. Muscles depend on water and essential minerals to function properly. When hydration levels drop, muscles can tighten more easily and recover more slowly after activity. Joints are also affected, as cartilage relies heavily on water to help cushion movement and reduce friction. Without enough fluids, many people notice increased aches, stiffness, or discomfort, particularly during exercise or prolonged periods outdoors.

Heat can also place extra stress on the body, making circulation and recovery less efficient. This is especially important for those who remain active, work outdoors, or participate in sports during warmer conditions. Drinking water regularly throughout the day, alongside electrolyte-rich fluids when needed, can help support mobility, reduce fatigue, and aid recovery.

Simple habits such as carrying a water bottle, limiting excessive caffeine or alcohol, and eating water-rich foods like fruit and vegetables can make a significant difference. Prioritising hydration during hot weather helps protect muscle and joint health while supporting overall wellbeing and energy levels...

A Night at the Movies! “Frankenstein” Review By Sean Cronin

“Frankenstein” is Mexican director Guillermo del Toro’s most recent movie. Obviously, the tale of Mary Shelley’s gothic horror has been adapted into film many times, starting with J. Searle Dawley’s 1910 silent short film. The list of actors who have played Frankenstein’s creation is vast, including the iconic Boris Karloff and Robert DeNiro. In del Toro’s film, the brilliant but insanely driven Dr. Frankenstein is played by Oscar Isaac, the very successful actor who has starred in the Star Wars sequel trilogy and the latest Dune Movies. His creature is played by Jacob Elordi, an Australian actor, whose 6’5” height makes him a very imposing personification of the monster, but who brings a tragic

vulnerability and child like gentleness to the part, cowering from his creator’s rages and mistreatment. Elordi has most recently starred as Heathcliff in “Wuthering Heights” this year. Interestingly, Elordi is currently one of the favourites to be cast as James Bond in the next EON reboot Bond Movies, since Daniel Craig’s final outing.

Del Toro alters very little of the original novel. The basic plot begins with Dr. Frankenstein being found in the Arctic by the crew of an ice-bound ship and recounting his experiences to the captain, while his crew try to repel the creature before it gets on board. Frankenstein reveals how the death of his mother

in childbirth led him to an obsessive drive to “cure death.” This leads him to some very questionable experiments and then ultimately, to the creation of his monster. As with all of del Toro’s works, the film looks absolutely stunning visually with lavish, incredibly detailed and inventive sets and costumes. Composer Alexandre Desplat brings his characteristic style of sardonic waltzes with an emphasis on orchestra a solo

violin compositions and the entire movie is one of the most striking Frankenstein adaptations ever made.

Frankenstein is currently being streamed on Netflix.

The popular Kerry personality will take on the famous 170km route in support of the Jack and Jill Children’s Foundation, which provides in-home nursing care and respite support for families of children with severe learning disabilities and complex medical needs. Speaking ahead of the event, Tadhg joked that it was “a sin a Kerry man hasn’t done the Ring of Kerry yet,” while encouraging

Among the families benefiting from the charity’s support is Tralee mother Anna Walsh, whose daughter Róisín lives with Angelman syndrome. Anna said the support provided by Jack and Jill has made a huge difference to family life. Participants who join Team Jack and Jill will receive training support, fundraising guidance, a cycling jersey and access to recovery facilities after completing the challenge.

The latest section stretches from the new boardwalk at Mountain Stage to Griffin’s Cottage at Kilkeehagh near the N70, bringing the total distance now open from the Glenbeigh trailhead to 6.2km. In total, almost 10km of the greenway is now accessible following the third phase opening within six months.

The route includes a 100-metre elevated boardwalk offering scenic views across the surrounding countryside.

Cathaoirleach of the Kenmare Municipal District, Norma Moriarty, welcomed the latest milestone ahead of the busy summer season and praised the cooperation of local landowners and project partners involved in the development.
