The O’Donoghue Ring Collection has announced an exciting new partnership with Irish sprint star Sarah Leahy, welcoming the Killarney athlete as its official Brand Ambassador as she continues her rise on the national and international stage.
Originally a standout footballer, Sarah later turned her focus to athletics, where she has rapidly established herself as one of Ireland’s brightest sprinting talents. Her

Sarah also enjoyed a remarkable 2025 as part of the Irish women’s 4x100m relay team, which set a new national record of 43.73 seconds at the London Diamond League alongside Lauren Roy, Ciara Neville and Sarah Lavin. The time surpassed the previous Irish record set in 2018.
Adding to her success, Sarah claimed the Women’s 60m title at the National Indoor Championships in Dublin and represented Team Ireland at the European Team Championships in Slovenia. Gemma Ring, Managing Director of the O’Donoghue Ring Collection, said the company is proud to support “an inspirational young woman whose determination, passion and drive make her a powerful role model in sport.”

The 2026 CAO cycle is shaping up to be a positive one for Leaving Certificate students, with more college places becoming available and grading continuing to return to pre-Covid standards. However, time is running out for applicants, with the deadline for submitting CAO applications set for 5pm on Sunday, February 1.
Last year, the CAO received 89,308 applications, up from 83,169 in 2024, and numbers are expected to exceed 90,000 this year. In 2025, 54,032 applicants accepted a college place, a figure that is expected to rise again in 2026. With competition
still strong, students are encouraged to use the remaining days wisely by carefully reviewing their course choices and researching future career opportunities.
As Leaving Cert grades continue to be gradually adjusted following the Covid years, CAO points requirements are expected to ease somewhat in 2026. Applicants should use the 2025 cut-off points as a general guide, while remembering that points fluctuate from year to year depending on demand.
The CAO Handbook lists colleges alphabetically by location, with
courses grouped under each institution and separated into Level 8 and Level 7/6 options. With careful planning and good research, most applicants can find a suitable pathway into higher education. Students should check both general and specific entry requirements and consider course content and career prospects. Taking time to reflect on personal strengths, interests, values and ambitions will help in choosing courses that lead to a fulfilling and successful college experience.

Dr Pieter van der Merwe answers

Q: What is atrial fibrillation (AFib)?
A: Atrial brillation is a common heart rhythm disorder where the heart beats irregularly and often rapidly. Instead of a steady, coordinated rhythm, the atria quiver, which can a ect how well blood ows through the heart.
Q: Why is AFib a concern?

A: AFib increases the risk of serious complications, especially stroke. When blood doesn’t move smoothly through the atria, it can pool and form clots. If a clot travels to the brain, it can cause a stroke. AFib can also lead to heart failure if untreated.
Q: What causes atrial fibrillation?
A: AFib can be triggered by conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, or thyroid disorders. Lifestyle factors—like excessive alcohol intake, obesity, stress, and sleep apnea—also raise the risk. In some people, no clear cause is found.
Q: What are the symptoms?
A: Symptoms vary widely. Some people feel palpitations, a racing or uttering heartbeat, shortness of breath, fatigue, dizziness, or chest discomfort. Others have no symptoms at all and only discover AFib during a routine checkup.
Q: How is AFib diagnosed?
A: Doctors usually diagnose AFib with an electrocardiogram (ECG), which records the heart’s electrical activity. Longer-term heart monitors may be used if episodes come and go.
Q: How is atrial fibrillation treated?
A: Treatment focuses on controlling heart rate or rhythm and reducing stroke risk. This may include medications, blood thinners, lifestyle changes, or procedures such as electrical cardioversion or catheter ablation.
Q: Can people live well with AFib?
A: Yes. With proper management, many people with AFib lead full, active lives while keeping complications under control.
Q; I play 5/ 7 a side a couple of times a week but haven't played since before Christmas ,any tips to ease myself back?
Chris, Tralee
Kevin says ; After the Christmas break, it’s common to jump straight back into training with good intentions but a body that’s a little less prepared. Reduced activity, long periods of sitting, travel, indulgent food, and disrupted sleep can all contribute to muscle tightness and reduced mobility. The problem isn’t the return to exercise — it’s returning without checking what the body needs first.

Whether you’re heading back to soccer, running, stone lifting, or collar and elbow wrestling, flexibility and tissue quality matter. Tight muscles can alter movement patterns, limit joint range, and increase strain on tendons and ligaments. This often shows up as stiffness, niggles, or injuries a few weeks into training rather than on day one.
Assessing muscle tightness early allows us to identify restrictions, imbalances, and compensations before they become problems. Sports massage or a full-body neuromuscular treatment help restore mobility, improve circulation, and prepare tissues to handle load again safely.
Think of it as a reset for your body — loosening what’s tight, supporting what’s overworked, and giving you the best chance to move well and stay injury-free as training ramps up....Kevin
Flexibility matters. We can help. Book a sports massage or full-body NCT session today.

Have a good weekend!

Groundworks are continuing around the area closest to the Garda station & Kerry School of Music (KSM), where paving has now commenced. Works will move into Rock Street in early February, in the vicinity of The Brogue and Sue Ryder. This is slightly ahead of the originally anticipated mid-February schedule. The strategy is to focus work and associated disruption within this area to provide greater programme flexibility, enabling sections to reopen as early as possible before progressing to the next area..
In terms of traffic management, Island of Geese on the Shaws side will remain closed for the time being. Access is currently being facilitated via traffic lights, which became operational this week and are continuing to be monitored and adjusted to optimise traffic flow. Local access to Waterloo Lane and KSM is being maintained throughout. An increase in traffic along Matt Talbot Road is anticipated during this period. This has been carefully planned for and is being managed as part of the overall traffic strategy. Importantly, these works are scheduled to take place during the traditionally quieter months of the year, with the objective of
Minister for Children, Disability and Equality and Kerry TD Norma Foley has welcomed confirmation that ten new special classes will be established in schools across Kerry for the forthcoming school year, describing the move as a meaningful boost for inclusive education in the county. This announcement follows the recent approval of six additional special classes earlier this month and brings the total number of special classes in primary and post-primary schools across Kerry to 128, with further announcements expected in the coming weeks.
Minister Foley said improving access to education for children with additional needs remains a key priority and thanked local schools for their continued cooperation and commitment in delivering these vital supports.

TRALEE WARRIORS
Warriors Eye Playoff Spot After Big Win
Women’s BIDL League – Round 5 Garvey’s Tralee Warriors 66 – Ballincollig 44
Garvey’s Tralee Warriors kept their Women’s BIDL playoff hopes alive with a dominant 66-44 win over Ballincollig in Mercy Mounthawk. The Warriors led at every quarter and showcased stellar performances from Louise Galvin (14 points) and a returning Muireann Teahan (12 points).
A fast start saw Warriors lead 19-14 at the first break, thanks to scores from Priya O’Donovan, Kelly Fitzgerald, and Rachel Creedon. The second quarter was all Tralee, with defensive strength limiting Ballincollig to just 5 points while the hosts surged ahead 38-19 at halftime.
Despite a spirited Ballincollig effort in the third, Warriors maintained control with scores from Teahan and Mary Kate Smith, extending their lead to 50-29. The final quarter saw both teams trade baskets, but Warriors sealed the win with strong finishes from Flynn, Creedon, Galvin, and Gracie O’Sullivan.
Top Scorers:
Tralee Warriors: Louise Galvin 14, Muireann Teahan 12, Priya O’Donovan 7, Rachel Creedon 7
Ballincollig: Caoimhe Donovan 13, Tara Donnellan 11, Lilly Wheelock

Defiant Demons Down Warriors in Crucial Clash
Men’s Super League – Round 13 UCC Demons 80 – Garvey’s Tralee Warriors 75
Garvey’s Tralee Warriors fell to a determined UCC Demons side in Cork, just a week after their National Cup final loss. The defeat dents Warriors’ playoff push, while the victory lifts Demons off the bottom of the table.
Warriors missed their captain Eoin Quigley, particularly in defence, and struggled to contain Demons’ Jordan Washington, who finished with 31 points.
Despite a strong start from Iggy Hunte, Demons took a 20-12 lead at the first break and built a commanding 51-31 advantage by halftime, thanks to sharp shooting from Tala Fam Thiam and Daryll Cuff.
Warriors mounted a comeback in the third quarter with a flurry of baskets from Perkins, Hunte, and Jokubaitis, narrowing the gap to 7.
That momentum continued into the final quarter as Michalczuk hit a three and the gap closed to a single score. However, foul trouble proved costly, and Demons held on with free throws from Washington, Tala Fam, and Dave Lehane sealing the win.
Top Scorers:
Demons: Jordan Washington 31, Tala Fam Thiam 22, Live Kivuvu 10
Warriors: Iggy Hunte 29, Jordan Perkins 14, Cian Sullivan 12
Next Fixtures:
Warriors face Belfast away, then St. Vincent’s, before hosting Ballincollig on Friday 13th February.
