A big thank you to everyone who helped organise at site, everyone did an amazing job! We had such a great response from our customers this year which was just amazing. Mission Christmas has raised over £3m worth of toys and delivered presents to 59,000 under-privileged children. Our company played a small part in this and they have sent us this certificate to thank us for our part.

A FEW WORDS FROM OUR CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

Jo Cherrett

Protection

Regulations

Dear All, Our focus for the first two years of the CIC has been about stabilising our trading position. At the same time we have been exploring development opportunities closely with Trafford Council that would bring capital investment into the leisure facilities and ultimately ensuring a long term sustainable business plan for Trafford Leisure CIC. The stabilising of the company has meant identifying and executing a number of opportunities to grow income but also achieve expenditure savings by restructuring many areas of the business. In the financial year 2014/2015 the previous company (Trafford Community Leisure Trust) received £900k of funding from Trafford Council and in March 2015 Trafford Community Leisure Trust (TCLT) made the decision to hand the running of leisure services back to Trafford Council. TCLT continued to run the services for a further 6 months, receiving £250k of funding before the service was transferred to Trafford Leisure CIC Ltd on the 1st October 2015. As you know we started trading on the 1st October 2015 and received £250k of subsidy from Trafford Council to support the first six months of the new company. Trafford Leisure CIC has been trading without any direct subsidy from Trafford Council for 22 months now which is the first time this has happened in Trafford and indeed Greater Manchester. I know I have said “Well Done” to you all before, but this is truly a remarkable achievement – so very proud of what we have achieved. Trafford Leisure is pleased to have achieved this performance in its first period of trading; this gives confidence to the investment and development plans that will come in the future. The investment being made by Trafford Council into leisure is unprecedented, and underpins so much of the Vision outlined for Trafford in 2023. The 2023 Vision for Trafford (the place) is to be the most active place in the UK. Even since the initial announcement on the 25th Nov 2016, further investment has followed that sees a proposed new leisure centre being built on the UA92 campus site as part of the new Stretford Masterplan. The scale and ambition of what needs to be achieved is both exciting and challenging. The developments will see: • • • • • • • • • •

The fitness gym’s being extended with new functional stations Purpose built studios Immersive cycling studios Wellbeing studios Spa, Relaxation and treatment rooms Food and Beverage A bespoke gymnastic and trampoline hub Soft play, Social active leisure solutions such as clip and climb. New changing facilities that will add to our customer experience and enjoyment of the facility.

Over the last six to nine months, the Senior Leadership team have worked hard to set out a new strategy and direction for the company. Although not all the detail has been worked through on how this will be delivered, it has become increasingly evident that increased capacity will be required and a shift of responsibilities for myself and other members of the Senior Leadership Team to ensure the developments and internal transformation can be realised. We will need to move from quite a traditionally run leisure organisation to a company that pushes boundaries and brings to life over 30 million pounds worth of capital investment. We have demonstrated that the business can operate subsidy free, but it is now about ensuring capacity in the company, in the right place to ensure a successful transitional period from where we are now to the new. The people and the processes need to be aligned to the new strategic direction of the company, ensuring the timeline for bringing more than one development at a time to life can be realised. The current business has a turnover of 8 million pounds and employs 400 people. As you know, I currently lead and manage the operational / business side of the business directly on a day to day basis through a team of 5 experienced Senior General Managers.

WE NEED TO BE READY - May 25th 2018 The 25th May 2018 will see the arrival of the new General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR).This is an initial, brief introduction and from now till May, there will be 12 steps spread across the newsletters that all of us will need to consider. GDPR will not only affect each & every one of us in our own business areas, but it will impact on us personally from outside of our working environment too. As an example of its priority, reporting a breach of personal data will be similar to the way in which we now have to report a ‘RIDDOR’. The ‘Bible’ for all things ‘Health and Safety’ is via the government’s Health & Safety Executive (HSE) website. The ‘Bible’ for all things GDPR will be via the ‘Independent Commissioner’s Office’ or ICO. The scary headlines of companies being fined up to 4% of their turnover or £17M, whilst true, are not the driving factor. The ICO states “This law is not about fines. It’s about putting the consumers and citizens first. We can’t lose sight of that”. Come the 25th May 2018, some examples of things that need to be reviewed and in many cases changed, include:- Membership application forms, consent forms, ParQ’s, job-application forms, any form with child details, DD forms, accident forms, etc. along with our policies & procedures that support them. As another example, if you or for example your Active Living Manager were to lose a work lap-top, then we could be in breach of the law if you failed to report the data breach to the ICO. (For this reason, starting with your work laptops, encryption codes will soon be installed). There are of course lots more things for us all to review. Between now and then, we will all be asked to help get our company in shape. To help us get there, I am presenting you with the official ICO introduction and their 12 steps, which are a short, simple overview for you all. This will start to give you the time to think about the necessary changes you personally and your departments will need to change and implement.

Step 1: Awareness You should make sure that decision makers and key people in your organisation are aware that the law is changing to the GDPR. They need to appreciate the impact this is likely to have and identify areas that could cause compliance problems under the GDPR. It would be useful to start by looking at your organisation’s risk register, if you have one. Implementing the GDPR could have significant resource implications, especially for larger and more complex organisations. You may find compliance difficult if you leave your preparations until the last minute.

Step 2: Information You Hold You should document what personal data you hold, where it came from and who you share it with. You may need

As I look to align my priorities to the new strategic plan, my focus will be on the new developments and, where appropriate, the necessary transformation of the existing business to ensure the developments come to life. To allow me to focus on the developments a new role of Head of Business will be introduced into the business as part of the Senior Leadership Team. I am pleased to advise you that as of 5th February 2018 Jon Francis will step into that role, reporting directly to myself. Jon will take responsibility for the running of the existing business on a day to day basis, ensuring the financial budgets and targets of each business are interpreted into operational plans and monitored effectively. The Senior Team General Managers will in turn report directly into Jon Francis. There are four key areas of the current business; Health and Fitness, Swimming, Gymnastics and Golf. The Head of Business will take responsibility for delivering the required outcomes on these areas of the business, leading the shift in culture; of embedding an excellent customer experience and sales focussed business right across all of these key areas.

to organise an information audit.

Step 3: Communicating Privacy Information You should review your current privacy notices and put a plan in place for making any necessary changes in time for GDPR implementation.

Step 4: Individuals Rights You should check your procedures to ensure they cover all the rights individuals have, including how you would

Little an els this Christmas Making Christmas special for EVERYONE Sammy Toner and Georgia Faulkner from Altrincham Leisure Centre took some time on Christmas day to help out the homeless people in the streets of Manchester. They collected warm coats, blankets, shoes from family and friends in Wythenshawe. They raised £300 and spent the money on brand new gloves, hats, sleeping bags and snacks. Georgia, Sammy and volunteers met up on Christmas morning at the Cornishman pub which was acting as a drop off point for items, the van which belonged to a cousin of Sammy's, was jam-packed with items to help the people on the streets of Manchester. The rest of the items that were left over were dropped off and shared between shelters that were open for homeless people on Christmas day. The girls and the rest of the volunteers parked the van in the centre of Piccadilly and spent 2-3 hours walking the streets dishing out goodies to the homeless. Sammy and Georgia said, “it was so upsetting and rewarding at the same time, we deserved our Christmas dinner this year when we got home.”

There will obviously be a period of transition. However, this is the first step in increasing capacity and making sure the right resources are aligned to both the existing business and the new business. Jon has been discussing the next steps of ensuring the existing business has the right structure in place during going forward. So I would like to take this opportunity to advice on the following – Craig Lomas, General Manager will be moving across to the West of the Borough to bring to life our first development and support the existing business in Partington whilst exiting from George H Carnall. Simon Blair, General Manager will be moving across to Central, running the existing Sale Leisure Centre. Simon will also be taking responsibility for football development, continuing to roll out the area working for football over the next twelve months and supporting the new development at Turn Moss. Fran Cunliffe, General Manager will be moving across to Stretford Leisure Centre, running the existing three facilities whilst starting to get involved with the design of the proposed new leisure centre. Paul Murray, General Manager will be taking an interim position based at Altrincham Leisure Centre, overseeing the Grammar, Golf and Altrincham Leisure Centre. Jon will be working closely with Paul and the teams in these businesses to identify what structure is needed to take us forward. As with any change, opportunity will come and any new further posts that follow as a result of this change will be advertised for all. Jon Francis has achieved an incredibly 32 years’ service with Trafford and has proven time and time again the ability to evolve and develop as the business has. I know you will all join me in wishing Jon and his colleagues all the best as they take their first steps in their new roles. Other news…… As you all know, Trafford Leisure made the decision to hand back the George H Carnall Leisure Centre to the Council back in 2016 and the focus for our company in the West of the Borough is very much on bringing Urmston to life. The contractor Willmott Dixon has been appointed and we are working to a completion date of December 2018 for Urmston! Trafford Council have been working hard on seeking an alternative for the site and as you can see from this link – https://www.placenorthwest. co.uk/news/trafford-plans-35m-home-for-manchester-giants-in-urmston/ its Exciting times for Trafford……. So, just a few other things that have taken place in January already: • The Directors of the Board authorised £27,000 of investment into a new website for Trafford Leisure and more will follow on this in the February Newsletter. • Home portal went live and swim assessments also launched at the beginning of the month are working really well • A new website is being developed for the golf • New lighting in the pool hall and sports hall for Stretford and • Planning permission granted for an additional pitch at the Grammar. Happy New Year, what a first 31 days to the year! Best Regards, Jo
