Did You Know?...

Just five days of eating fatty foods alters how your body processes nutrients: study

After only five days of eating a high fat diet, the way in which the body’s muscle processes nutrients changes. This is thought to be the first study to find that a change in metabolism happens so quickly after adopting an unhealthy diet, with these shifts increasing the risk of diabetes and other diseases. Healthy college students were fed a fat-laden diet during the study. The diet included sausage, biscuits, macaroni and cheese, plus food cooked with lots of butter to increase the percentage of their daily fat intake. Muscle samples were then

collected because, as the authors of the study say, the body’s muscle is a major clearing house for glucose in the blood –

which appears after food is eaten. The researchers found that the muscles’ ability to break down glucose after a meal is disrupted after five days of eating a high fat diet, which could lead to the body’s inability to respond to insulin – a risk factor for the development of diabetes and other diseases. “This study shows that our bodies can respond dramatically to changes in diet in a shorter time frame than we have previously thought,” said Matt Hulver, an associate professor of human nutrition, foods and exercise at the Virginia Tech College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. “If you think about it, five days is a very short time. There are plenty of times when we all eat fatty foods for a few days, be it the holidays, vacations, or other celebrations. But this research shows that those high-fat diets can change a person’s normal metabolism in a very short time frame.” The researchers are now interested in examining how these short-term changes in the muscle can adversely affect the body in the long run and how quickly these changes can be reversed once someone returns to a low fat diet. healthclubmagement.co.uk

Dance Competition Trafford Community Leisure ran their annual cheer leading & dance competition on Wednesday 1st April 2015 at George Carnall. We had 34 different dance groups in attendance. The dances ranged from hip hop, contemporary, musical theatre, street, cheer leading, street cheer & ballet and all teams gave their all. We had different age groups….KS1, KS2 & KS3/4 and the panel of 4 judges spent 3 hours judging this fantastic competition. There was a great atmosphere and the event was thoroughly enjoyed by all! Dance coaches Sarah Aldcroft & Elaine Nugent organised the event alongside the Trafford Schools Games Organisers Kay Statham & Chris Dyson and with the full support of Trafford Community Leisure Coaching Department. Trophies were given to the teams placing 1st, 2nd and 3rd and all teams got a participation certificate and had a very memorable afternoon all sharing their performances and cheering each other on. Some schools will be progressing to compete at the UK Schools Cheer leading & Street Cheer Nationals over the weekend of 20th & 21st June 2015 where schools come together from all over the UK at The Velodrome in Manchester to compete for the UK Schools titles for Cheer leading, Street Cheer & Pom Dance.

“Changes to the delivery of the Leisure Services in Trafford, which will directly affect you, as a valued employee of Trafford Community Leisure Trust”. Everyone in the Trust should now have been spoken to and should now be aware about the changes that will be happening in 6 months time. For those who are still unsure below is the letter that Bernie Jones wrote to us all. As you will be aware, the Trust has delivered the Leisure Services in Trafford for the last 12 years, during which time participation has increased from 800,000 in the first year of operation to 2.5 million in recent years, making Trafford one of the most active Boroughs in the UK, something which The Trustees and the Executive Team are extremely proud of. As you are also aware, the Trust has been working towards our Vision 2020 of “Enhancing the Community Through The Provision of First Class Sports

and Leisure Opportunities”, and has made significant progress on a number of our 7 strategic aims, particularly those around Developing and Leading our People, and we are extremely proud of the First Class workforce we now have. As well as First Class staff, however, we also need First Class facilities, and throughout this period, the Trust and Trafford Council have been working hard together to try to develop a sustainable business model, within the context of a withdrawal of revenue subsidy for Leisure, and the need for significant capital investment for improvement and redevelopment into the Leisure Centres. This investment is essential to ensure a fit for purpose provision that is sustainable for the future. Sadly, despite all of our best endeavours and creativity, it has become apparent that as a small local

charity, the Trust is not in a position to provide the level of capital required to make the essential investment into the facilities – some £20-25 million - whilst continuing to operate the Centres with no subsidy, and in these tough economic times, the Council is unable to find additional capital. It is with great regret, therefore, that the Board has concluded that the Trust is unable to continue to deliver the existing Leisure service without the required investment, and has advised the Council that they will need to look for an alternative provider who will be able to provide the level of investment needed in order to make Vision 2020 a reality for the people of Trafford.

Whilst I appreciate that this will come as a huge shock to you, I want to say first and foremost that for now it is “Business As Usual” and that your employment will not be affected. develops a modern and fit-for-purpose leisure provision that meets the current and future demands of its residents, and staff and other stakeholders will be kept fully informed as this work develops. Once a new provider has been confirmed by the Council, TUPE consultation will begin with all staff ahead of a full transfer to the incoming provider. In the here and now, whilst I appreciate that change and the unknown is extremely unsettling, I assure you that we will keep you completely updated as and when more information becomes available. The Executive and Senior Leadership Teams will be holding a series of “Question and Answer” sessions at all locations commencing 20th April and will ensure that all of your immediate concerns and questions are addressed. A full timetable of these sessions will be available later this week. Further updates will then be scheduled in the coming weeks and months.

Questions & Answers “ The TUPE Regulations are designed to safeguard the rights of employees by ensuring protection and consultation in the event of the transfer of the business or part of the business in which the employees are involved ”. “ What is TUPE ? ” TUPE stands for the Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations 2006. Under the provisions of TUPE, where a business or part of a business is being transferred to a new employer, contracts of employment of employees are also transferred. The process of transfer is automatic and for example, contracts are not terminated and re-offered; neither is there a need to confirm the transfer (either verbally or in writing), although Trafford Community Leisure Trust will inform and consult with employees affected by the transfer and their representatives in accordance with the TUPE Regulations. The effect of the transfer arrangements is that from the first day of transfer all contracts of employment, (whether explicit written documents or not), which existed between individual employees and Trafford Community Leisure Trust, become contracts between each individual and the new employer. The TUPE Regulations are designed to safeguard the rights of employees by ensuring protection and consultation in the event of the transfer of the business or part of the business in which the employees are involved.

Do casual staff get TUPE also? All full-time, part-time, sessional and casual staff are entitled to TUPE across to the incoming contractor on their existing terms and conditions. Where we have staff who are regularly working for us on a casual basis, we will be discussing with them whether they would like to take on contracted hours ahead of the transfer, in order to guarantee them specific hours post transfer.

Frequently Asked Questions.. If you have any queries or worries don’t hesitate to ask your Manager or the Senior Leadership team. They will answer your questions the best that they can. What happens if I am currently on secondment? All staff on secondment have a substantive post that they are entitled to return to, and an agreed timescale for the secondment. This right will be protected at the point of transfer. Staff currently on secondment are undertaking meaningful and needed roles and it is likely that they would be required to continue as is, but all cases will be discussed and agreed with the specific individuals involved. If, post transfer, the seconded role is not required staff would immediately revert back to their substantive post. If the seconded role is required post transfer, at the end of the secondment period staff would revert to their substantive role, as now. Will my conditions of employment change if I transfer to a new employer? Since your contract of employment would transfer, apart from the change in identity of your employer, all contractual terms and conditions which apply to you as an employee of Trafford Community Leisure Trust, would also transfer. The only rights that would not normally transfer under TUPE Regulations are those concerning pensions. If no buyer/investor is found do we cease trading on 30th September 2015? i.e. We lock the doors and give the keys back to the council? There is confidence that a contractor/investor can be found and the Council have indicated that sport and leisure is a key priority for them, so there will be no locking the doors and giving back the keys to the Council. It is hard to envisage that anyone in Trafford would allow this to happen and the default position would be that the Council would have to take the contract back in house. What will happen to my Simply Health Membership? As this is part of your existing benefits package, your entitlement to this benefit will transfer with you. It will then be for the new provider to negotiate any changes to these benefits going forward. Will we still have Profiles? There will be no changes in the way in which Profiles are currently being used or in the pay rates applicable to each of the Profile levels, prior to the transfer. Whilst the new employer may have their own performance management systems in place which they may introduce at some point in the future, the contractual terms and conditions which apply to you as an employee of TCLT will transfer with you, and this will include Profile pay rates. What happens if I am still in probation at the time of the transfer? The effect of the transfer arrangements is that from the first day of transfer all contracts of employment which exist between individual employees and Trafford Community Leisure Trust, become contracts between the individual and the new employer. Since your contract of employment would transfer, apart from the change in identity of your employer, all contractual terms and conditions which apply to you as an employee of Trafford Community Leisure Trust, would also transfer so you will continue to be working through your probation in exactly the same way as you are doing pre transfer and in most cases with the same line manager.
