A FEW WORDS FROM OUR
CHIEF EXECUTIVE
JO CHERRETT Dear All, Wednesday 20th September was National Fitness Day, “Your Health is for Life” and what a fantastic effort from so many people. Whether you joined the walk, took part in a centre challenge, posted or cheered people on we successfully raised awareness of our purpose and hopefully inspired each other and our community to “move more everyday”. We will be holding a review session, what worked well, what didn’t and the key part – ideas for next year. With a good 3-month lead in, imagine what we can achieve next year. This session will be open to anyone who wants to join – both in person or on-line and if when the date is released this clashes with a commitment or shift that stops you attending – don’t worry we will record it and share so you can still feed in up to 7 days after. The more voices, the more diverse the views and thoughts are the better it will make Year 2’s event next year. Well done everyone! As we celebrated National Fitness Day last month, and like many of my colleagues was walking around Trafford you couldn’t help but think about move Altrincham. Building on the success of the Brand and Team at move Urmston – this time next year move Altrincham will be open. With this in mind, and it probably won't surprise you we have been turning our attention to what people resource and leadership we will need for the next 12 months. So, some people updates for you; see the page across for General Manager move Altrincham I am delighted to announce that Craig Lomas will be taking up the position of General Manager of move Altrincham when we get ready to open our doors next year. I know that Craig is relishing the opportunity, we couldn’t ask for a better person to lead the team and over the next 6-9 months he will work closely with Jon Francis to ensure that the handover at move Urmston is seamless. It is important to Craig that all lessons learnt are taken from Urmston, (minus a

pandemic) so we can improve on our peoples experiences as we get ready to open.. Number 2 at move Altrincham With Craig’s position confirmed, we will also be looking to assess and select the right number 2 for move Altrincham. This role isn’t for the faint hearted, with a projected turnover of around £3,000,000, an increased square metre totally 5500m2 and a staff team of around 100 people. Over the coming months this number two role will become an opportunity and will be available to any of our existing Leisure / Assistant Managers to apply for internally. This will be the busiest and largest of all our facilities and this role will require someone with Assistant Manager experience. We will be providing this opportunity to internal candidates first, recognising the rich talent we have in the business and more information will follow on this role in due course. Manager at move Urmston With Craig transitioning to move Altrincham next year we will be replacing the General Manager position with a Centre Manager role. This is an exciting opportunity, and like the number 2 role at move Altrincham position will be available for existing Leisure / Assistant Managers and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop further in the role to hopefully take the step to a General Manager over time and become part of the Senior Leadership team in the future. Development Manager Helena is currently seconded into a development role and is continuing to flourish and deliver in this role carefully navigating her operational experience with Business Development. Helena is specifically leading and supporting significant project plans that must be delivered for move Altrincham. Helena’s secondment is continuing, and once Craig is in place and opening the doors of move Altrincham, she will support Craig and the team where needed for those first 12 weeks of opening. After this, with the investment plans and business development opportunities that will follow Helena will continue in the Development role for a further 12 months. Development Manager – move Stretford As Helena has done for move Altrincham, I am delighted to advise that Fran will take the position of Development Manager move Stretford once the doors are closed at Stretford Leisure Centre. Although I say as the doors are closed, Fran will lead the transition (closing of centre) before her attentions turn to the...

...many project plans that will be in place for delivering move Stretford – working closely with her colleague Helena to ensure consistency across the brand of move. Fran may also continue to lead and support some of the smaller satellite sites that we operate, such as Stretford Talbot / Sports Barn and we will continue to review this over the next year as Fran transitions to her new position. Golf Manager Dave Howlett continues in the role of Golf Manager and has demonstrated that you can transfer the leadership and management skills gleaned from one leisure operation into another. The Golf has had a challenging 12 months, but we are absolutely delighted with the team being built and progress being made and look forward to David continuing in the role of Golf Manager as the business continues to transform and grow. IT Manager The IT and Digital transformation across Trafford Leisure over the last 4 years has been truly astonishing, and our business is very different to where it was. We have embarked on a journey of digital as an enabler but as you continue to tell us there is still so much to be done and improve now that IT and Digital are as essential to how we do our jobs and or deliver service to our customers as a swimming pool or gym itself. With move Altrincham less than 12 months away, we are taking the decision to recruit an IT Manager who will report directly into the Head of Asset and IT. We are going a step further with this, and based on our people’s direct feedback we will also be recruiting a systems trainer, someone’s who’s role it will be to ensure that all our people are trained, supported and feel confident in the different systems and software we have in place. The priority will be gladstone 360 and Microsoft 365 closely followed by embedding teams across all parts of the business.
OUR PEDAL POWERED COLLEAGUES
Finance Manager Not all of you may be aware, but except for our long-term colleague in finance Christine Callaghan, the Finance team including the Finance Director are completely new post pandemic. When a team changes with this scale of change, it takes time to recruit, support and build and under the excellent leadership of Emma Shackleton, Finance Director, we will shortly begin the final recruitment within the finance team by introducing the Finance Manager position back into the business. This role will report directly into Emma. Football Development and Broadoak Outdoor Sports Facility Stephen Darroch has been extremely agile over the last couple of years, seconded in roles covering responsibility for Assistant Manager, swim well, football development and supporting the Football Foundation bid for a second All weather pitch at Partington which is under construction and will open in November. Stephen’s commitment to a particularly challenging part of the business is exemplary and I am delighted to advise that Stephen will take the permanent position of Football Development Manager which incorporates the football service contract we run on behalf of Trafford Council in addition to the operations and development of the new partnership agreement with the Dean Trust at Partington.

in mind, that we have taken the decision to recruit an additional Assistant Manager in the structure, that may fulfil the role in any of our centre’s releasing existing Assistant Managers for project work or in turn will work directly on project work as decided by the Head of Business. This recognises the scale and size of the business we will become over the coming years, as we slowly move from being a business that employs around 300 people to one that employs over 400 people. Final Note Resource is not an easy one to balance at times, so many people are juggling many priorities, and it is a credit to everyone that we collectively do this, supporting each other. To our people at Sale, don’t worry Danny Norris, General Manager is staying where he is, under his leadership the Sale team in place are delivering incredible results and will continue to support the transition of all other centre’s until we get to Sale last – we save the best until last! This is the start and not the finish of other opportunities that will follow. As we get closer to move Altrincham opening, our Head of People we will start to share news on other new roles and opportunities such as a Spa Manager, Spa consultants, Gymnastic roles and outside of the centre’s too with Trafford Leisure considering how we support Trafford Council with place based working out in the community. We also have the Partington LUF Project, which although in very early stages, will clearly bring opportunities for our people as new roles are developed.

One of our annual staff get-togethers took place on a sunny Saturday at the driving range; a chance for staff members to bring family and friends and celebrate what we have acheived so far in 2023. Spirits were high as food and drink flowed, as well as ice cream where their was one tremoundously happy customer! The driving range was put to full use as everyone enjoyed a go (or two); we can’t wait for next time we are able to bring the Trafford Leisure family together once more.

SOMEONE’S HAPPY!

MOVE A MILE AT PARTINGTON It was fantastic to see such a brilliant turnout for the National Fitness Day Mile Work in the community at Partington, led by our very own Mark Pearson. Just another example of how successful our fitness day celebrations were within Trafford. Well done, guys.

...many project plans that will be in place for delivering move Stretford – working closely with her colleague Helena to ensure consistency across the brand of move.
