Poverty Truth Commission - Alongside other key leaders in Trafford, I am currently part of the Poverty Truth Commission taking place in Trafford. The commission is made up of two groups of people. Around half of the commissioners are people with a lived experience of the struggle against poverty. The other half like myself are leaders within Trafford. It is still early days in our collaborative work, but together we are understanding the nature of poverty, what some of the underlying issues that create poverty are and we are exploring creative ways of addressing them. This voice, this collaboration, with the right kind of support, “nothing about us without us” leaves me excited about bringing about real change, with other partner organisations in Trafford for the first time in decades. Women’s Euro’s - A big month for Trafford ahead, with the women’s euro’s opening game being held at Old Trafford on Wednesday 6th July. Well done to the staff who won the free tickets, make sure you share your stories in our next edition. A couple of specific areas of focus for us over the next 12 months will include offering the community commissioners a free active Trafford Pass and credit voucher for Trafford Leisure, so that we can get some feedback directly on their experience of the activities and how easy it was to join, book and visit. It will probably confirm the challenges we have with the current system, but we would then look to support – get all up and running to utilise the centres and enable the feedback to come back to us at the end. The second area of focus is to provide information on our active Trafford scheme to our customers, and get feedback on both the offering, eligibility, and thoughts on how it may be improved. The feedback would form part of an overall review taking place over the next 12 months. If you are passionate about the Active Trafford scheme we have in place, have lived experience of living in poverty and/or ideas for improving what we do, please do drop me a line directly and we will involve you as we move forward with this focus group. On a final note, from me, a big thank you to the team at Altrincham whose outstanding efforts led to saving the

life of a customer suffering from a cardiac arrest. More to follow on this in the next edition of our newsletter.

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN ADDING A NEW FULLY FUNDED QUALIFICATION TO YOUR SKILLSET? In partnership with Exercise Movement and Dance (EMD), Trafford Leisure and Salford Community Leisure have a great opportunity to add This Girl Can Classes to Project Overview timetabled activity both in a leisure setting and/or community setting.

THE PROJECT The This Girl Can team at Sport England has partnered with EMD UK, the national governing body for group exercise, to create a brand new group exercise class to appeal to the less active female market as part of their activation strategy. The project is aimed at instilling a sustainable behaviour change among less active women, to improve their health and happiness. This will allow them to build up confidence, fitness & ability along the way, by opening up exercise classes to them at their local leisure centre.

CLASS CONCEPT

• A fun, pre set, variable intensity fitness class to uplifting music • A taster of different group exercise styles • Reassurance & support for the less active market, welcoming participants no matter the fitness level • A developmental stepping stone into other group exercise classes or local opportunities

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO?

If you or any friends & family are interested in attending the training to deliver future TGC classes as part of our business expansion of group exercise programmes out into the community, then please email Carly.Heselwood@traffordleisure.co.uk. To take part in this training, you must already be qualified in one of the following qualifications: a Level 2 Fitness Qualification in Exercise to Music, Group Training To Music, Dance Fitness or other equivalent. All you need to do then is commit to pre-learning of choreography/music, and a one day face to face training and assessment session.

Hello my name is Fiona and I have worked for Trafford Leisure for over 18 years in different roles and my current role is as Learning and Development Manager. You'll mainly find me on pool side teaching new and Trafford Leisure lifeguards, or in a classroom teaching first aid. I'm really passionate about this new role within Trafford Leisure who have invested in my personal development and I've recently qualified to be a Mental Health & Wellbeing First Aid Trainer. I can't wait to start delivering this training to our managers and to the members of staff who have volunteered to become a mental health and wellbeing ambassador because I know what a huge benefit this training will have for all our people. I’m planning on running courses over the summer months to get our people trained up as ambassadors. What exactly do we mean when we say good mental health? What does mental wellbeing actually mean? I think we can all agree that it is a state of mind, that we feel and think, but more than that...mental health is not just the absence of mental disorder. It is defined as a state of wellbeing in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to the community. At Trafford Leisure, we understand that staff members sometimes need some extra help and support, and sometimes they just need to talk to someone! So we believe having our own people trained in mental health and wellbeing who can be available to offer a listening ear, some extra support or simply to signpost members of staff that might need extra help can only be a positive thing for everyone in the Trafford Leisure team.

RECRUITMENT Did you know this year alone we’ve recruited 90 new joiners to the Trafford Leisure team! The team are constantly working to recruit and we recently ran a new Leisure Attendant campaign. This was very successful and in the last week alone we’ve made another 8 offers of employment for Lifeguards across our centres, 6 of which are for full time positions and we are still working on this campaign!!! We are also recruiting for swimming teachers, Apprentices and Traineeships so if you know of anyone you think would be suitable for any of these roles, or any other vacancies we have then please do consider recommending a friend, you could earn anywhere from £200 - £500 for doing so under our recommend a friend scheme. SITE UPDATES

We introduced the automated Purchase Order system “E-Req” to our sites and

following a couple of teething problems, this system is now running smoothly

and will help to maintain good financial controls on our spending and approval

process. Jon and Josh spent a couple of hot and dusty days in the basement of Sale Leisure Centre, successfully archiving over 3 years of financial information that had built up over the covid period. To make this real, there were over 200

boxes and bags that needed to be confidentially disposed of. Not the best way to induct a new person into their role but a job well done that we are all grateful for – thank you Gents!

I started my professional career in the UK Armed Forces where I joined the Royal Navy as a submariner and earned my ‘dolphins’, a mark of submariner competency. However, even during the Naval swimming test I noticed how others found treading water and floating easier than me; I struggled to maintain a back float even for just two minutes, which could be crucial for survival if suddenly immersed in cold water.” Tom stayed with the Navy for nearly five years, and at 24 went on to complete a degree in Sport Science at the University of Huddersfield. This was followed by a Masters degree in Exercise Physiology at Liverpool John Moore University, where he studied the impact of the environment on performance. He started his PhD on the science of human flotation in water this year.

“As part of the Institute of Swimming’s training academy with Trafford Leisure, I completed my Level One Teaching Assistant Qualification and I hope to undertake my Level Two this year. Trafford Leisure has been fantastic, and I am already working, assisting with the Alpha Swimming Lessons for Trafford Leisure at Stretford Leisure centre.”
