A FEW WORDS FROM OUR
CHIEF EXECUTIVE
JO CHERRETT Hi All, I hope you have all managed to have a break at some point over the Easter weekend. With the arrival of Morgan Gardner, Graphic Designer & Content Creator joining Trafford Leisure just 8 weeks ago, Heather and Morgan have produced our first edition of the newsletter for 2022 – brilliant work – fortunately Morgan’s managed to get to know us in a very short period! It’s amazing to see how much has already been achieved or taken place in the first part of the year. The official opening or celebration of move Urmston has been a high for me, the team at move have done an outstanding job in bringing our brand and activities to life and gives myself, the Board and Trafford Council so much confidence in the investment that will go into Altrincham, Sale, Stretford and Partington. As some of you are aware, budgets for 22/23 have been one of the key priorities since the start of the year. Nothing normal or straightforward about producing a budget whilst the business is still recovering from the pandemic. We’re still waiting on the much-needed investment in our older centres which is impacting our growth in health & fitness and an almost completely new team in finance compared to when the previous budget was produced – we like a challenge! But under the leadership of our new Finance Director, Emma Shackleton, we have a draft budget that is being reviewed and discussed fully with both the Council and Board to be approved by the end of May. Utility costs have been challenging and just highlight further the journey we are on to be carbon neutral in our leisure centres, which we are addressing with the investments for the other centres. Pay is an integral part of our budget and work is still taking place on this, and we will be talking to our employee voice reps and partners UNISON over the coming weeks about our pay proposals. The living wage is a very necessary step in ensuring that everyone has a wage you can live on, it’s not easy for anyone, when cost of living is rising for all people daily. In reviewing pay, it is also important that we can ensure we maintain a competitive pay architecture, ensuring pay is right and rewarding for roles balanced with affordability linked to the planned investments. Once the budget is approved, I will ask Emma to share some financial information and KPI’s with our employee voice reps and we can provide some of this information in our next newsletter. Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete the staff survey, great feedback, and insight to shape the next 12 months and beyond. One of the things I have noted is understanding who the Senior Leadership Team is, so I will look at including some photos and further information for the next newsletter and please do look out for a dedicated Staff Survey Newsletter which will be issued out soon. Finally, I am looking to confirm dates for Vision and Strategy Roadshows for all staff over the next 3-6 months, to continue to bring our new brand move to life. Please keep an eye out for the dates and invites. I have chatted to a few staff over recent months on my own personal challenge of moving a little more each day. Mid December, with encouragement, I decided to download the NHS app “couch to 5K” and give it a try. I have never been able to run (30 seconds has always been my max), if I am honest – I made so many excuses as to why I didn’t run and when I talked about exercise – I realised I was talking about what I used to do to be active rather than what I did. I also didn’t want to be laughed at – who does? Well, with encouragement from many of you and some support of family – I have completed the couch to 5k. The challenge now is to keep it going, but I am amazed that I have gone from only being able to run 30 seconds to 30 minutes. Please do give it a try if on reading this, you are similar to me, and wondering when and how to fit in exercise. The next goal is to complete weekly 3 x 30mins and I have now started to finish my run a few times at a Leisure Centre, starting to use weights. Thank you to those who have encouraged and supported, please do let me know if I can help get someone started or supported. Do you have a story to share, how did you make a change with lifestyle – please do let us know and we can continue to support each other.
2
I hope you enjoy the newsletter, which will also be available on Flex along with previous newsletters. This is your newsletter – so please do send content, ideas or suggestions directly through to marketing or your employee voice reps (their details are included again in this newsletter). Let’s hope the weather continues to improve and the noise I have heard around snow in May doesn’t happen!

“20 years ……………………. I’ve worked for Trafford for more than half my life and yes, you’d do less for murder (as people keep saying). My journey has been far from boring. I started as a casual receptionist at Sale Leisure Centre before moving onto full time lifeguard and senior leisure attendant. To progress to Duty Manager, I was made to move to Stretford Leisure Centre (I was comfortable at Sale but moving was the best thing that could have happened to me) and after 2 years moved over to The Grammar to be Sports & Fitness Manager. The Grammar was such a different place to work, building relationships with partners and learning so much led me to become a Centre Manager of GHC. From GHC, I was moved to Altrincham Leisure Centre where I was for a few years before moving over to The North of the Borough to be a General Manager of Stretford Chester, Talbot, and Old Trafford Sports Barn. Although I’ve been here 20 years, it doesn’t feel like it, I’ve moved around, changed roles and been lucky enough to work with some great people, some still here to this day and some who have moved on but remain friends for life. I’m excited to be part of the “new” and like everyone else can’t wait for the refurbs to continue.”

POOL ROCKS GET READY TO RIDE, YOUR WAY! Trafford Leisure is now registered with lovetoride.net an online platform which promotes quarterly events to encourage, incentivise and reward active riding and encouraging riding. You can choose to: • Ride for health and fitness - feel happier, stronger and live longer! • Ride for transportation - to work, to school, to the store - we’ll help you start making any journey from A to B by bike. • Ride for adventure - whether it’s to ride somewhere new or bikepack for the first time, enjoy a pedal-powered adventure! • Ride with kids - saddle up, enjoy a bike ride with your kids and turn bike time into family time.
Carly Heselwood, Health and Wellbeing Manager, is our workplace champion but it would be great to have a team of champions who are passionate about riding a bike and keen to encourage others to log rides and take part in Love to Ride campaigns. If you are interested in helping to get more people riding and smiling then pop an email to carly.heselwood@traffordleisure.co.uk. It really is amazing when Champions help somebody take the plunge, start riding, and put the wheels in motion to drive real and long-lasting behaviour change that will benefit their health, happiness and the planet!

After almost 2 years stashed away in the store cupboard due to COVID-19, Sale Leisure Centre has managed to re-launch the pool gauntlet inflatable session over the holidays for Pool Rocks. Here is a photo of the team enjoying taking on the gauntlet at a staff training session.
METAFIT ABS & SCULPT The Marketing Team recently visited Sale to film and capture the Metafit/Abs & Sculpt Classes on a Wednesday morning, led by the briliant Jonathan Chianca. Credit is due to the group who put in a real shift and helped make it a great class! Marketing will be trying to visit sites on a regular basis from now on to capture our real people doing great activities for our social channels. Turning what we do so well on the inside, outside for all to see! 17
WHAT’S NEW? RESULTS @ Sale Leisure Centre STAFF SURVEY THERE WILL BE A DEDICATED STAFF
SURVEY NEWSLETTER SOON!
In our staff survey results we had a number of comments about recruiting new staff into the business and how we aren’t recruiting essential staff in our centres (please note more info on the staff survey will follow in a dedicated newsletter). We completely appreciate these comments, we know that we have been understaffed in many centres and support functions since re-opening from COVID lockdown and we are trying exceptionally hard to recruit across the business in various roles. You will know from what’s playing out in the news at Manchester Airport recently and just walking down the Highstreet where there’s many ‘Hiring’ or ‘Jobs available’ signs that most businesses are struggling to recruit at the moment and at Trafford Leisure we are no different! Although its an absolute credit to each and everyone in the Trafford family that despite having so many vacancies right the way across our business that our services have hardly been disrupted – and for that we can’t thank you enough! We know that since the pandemic some people have changed how they think about life, work, and what they want out of both. COVID has made people step back and rethink their lives leading to a deluge of resignations across the UK and we at Trafford Leisure have seen the effects of this in people moving jobs at unprecedented levels and recruitment in our centres remains a key priority for us. In the last six months alone we have recruited no less than 80 new starters to the business, which is phenomenal at 26% of our total headcount and as we focus on recruitment we aren’t planning to bring back any development roles in the business, until further refurbishments get underway & completed.
Sale celebrated 50 years since first opening it’s doors on 24th March 1972! The centre was formerly known as Sale Baths, which consisted of solely the club swimming pool and opened in 1914. There have been countless memories made within the centre at Sale, and that’s thanks to the team and community that has been built over the years. I’m sure we are all looking forward to the watching the centre and commmunity grow even more, and here’s to the next 50 years!
SALE LEISURE CENTRE TURNS 50! HANG TOUGH GYM CHALLENGE
16
The team at Sale have been hosting the hang tough gym challenge on the gym floor throughout Februrary. This really injected some challenging and competitive fun into the fitness team, plus the customers who have gone head to head to try and come out on top! The top 3 members won a free PT session; a great incentive to get people involved!
We are continually reviewing how we can prevent resignations from the Trafford family and how we can ensure we have a Talented, Happy and Proud team. As we continue to work on improving your pay and conditions, we are currently in active discussions regarding the 2022 pay review and reviewing the working conditions (although we know that by implementing the investment strategy this will greatly improve our facilities & the working environment for all). We are also taking many proactive steps to try and improve our recruitment and retention rates. Some positive steps we’ve taken to help retain our great people and to recruit new people are; •
Given added benefits to our people by extending the family & Friend pass with an improved offering, allowing up to 5 family & Friends to benefit with the added option of Direct Debit membership at just £12.50 a month!
•
Implemented a minimum 2% pay award in October 2021 with pay review for 2022 well underway – and we hope to be able to give some good news in the near future as we are increasingly concerned with the increasing costs of living.
•
Conducted targeted recruitment campaigns for both Leisure Attendants/Lifeguards and Swimming Teachers whereby we have offered to fund the training, with over 85 applicants in the last campaign. We have also scheduled in pro-active recruitment campaigns on an on-going basis.
•
Recruited for new Employee Voice Representatives to give our people a VOICE.
•
Re-established partnerships with pre-existing & new organisations who can assist with recruitment into key roles – including RLSS, Swim England, UA92, DWP along with others educational institutes in the area and we are aiming to attend a number of recruitment fairs with these partners in 2022 as we know that since the pandemic those aged 16-21 years aren’t taking up jobs at the same rate they were before COVID and we want to see how we can encourage these to come and join the Trafford family.
•
Extended our contract with Leisure Jobs so we can promote our job offers to a more targeted audience with proactive CV searching.
•
Improved our Careers landing page giving clearer information on the benefits of working for Trafford Leisure.
•
Improved the recommend a friend/referral scheme for anyone recommending a friend for a contracted job with Trafford so you could earn from £50-£200!

STAFF FEEDBACK MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AIDERS MHFA We hear you! There were a number of comments in the staff survey about us at Trafford Leisure looking after our peoples mental health and wellbeing more. We’ve been speaking to your elected Employee Voice Reps about how best to achieve this and one suggestion is that we look to introduce Mental Health First Aiders across Trafford Leisure. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an internationally recognised training course, designed to teach people how to spot the signs and symptoms of mental ill health and provide help on a first aid basis. In the same way as learning physical first aid, MHFA teaches people how to recognise those crucial warning signs of mental ill health and feel confident to guide someone to appropriate support and we want to invest in this for our people across Trafford Leisure. By embedding MHFA training within our business we aim to encourage people to talk more freely about mental health, reducing stigma and creating a more positive culture. We will be promoting the MHFA positions shortly so do look out for the posters!
WHAT’S NEW?
@ Altrincham Leisure Centre
Recently, the marketing team also visited Altrincham Leisure Centre to film the Water Wellness class led by the fantastic Nicky Lowe. The class was a barrel of fun for all involved, and the group were certainly up for a great time. Nicky even treated them to the tubes at the end of session to make sure everyone used up all their energy! Capturing the events of this class recieved great engagement online, and keep an eye out for Heather & Morgan who will be visiting sites more reguarly for content.
Do you have a session in your centre we can film & include next month?
IMPROVED COMMUNICATIONS
We are conscious that across Trafford we have people working lots of different working patterns over 7 days a week and as such communications isn’t always easy! We are working on how we can improve this and if you’ve any suggestions please do speak to your Employee Voice Rep or Managers so it can be considered. In the meantime we want to ensure that you can access these newsletters down the line without having to search through your emails so we’ve created a Communications section on Flex which will contain all Newsletters and key communications moving forward. That way you can see them on any device at any time!

FELICITATIONS,
DAVID!
David Howlett, Assistant Manager at Altrincham Leisure Centre & The Grammar, has recently proposed to his partner in Paris, and she said YES! A massive congratulations David to you and your wife-to-be, and everyone at Trafford Leisure wishes nothing but the best for you both! 15
WHAT’S NEW?
@ Altrincham Golf Course & Driving Range
HARD AT WORK The team at Altrincham Golf Course have been incredibly busy putting in shifts to prepare the course for Spring and Summer. Pictured left is one of the bunker’s being reworked to open up a fairway. A big shoutout to Paul Murray and the team for all their recent efforts in maintaining and preparing the golf course and driving range for the Spring/Summer seasons ahead. Also, members from the team at Biora and Altrincham Golf made a recent visit to St. Vincent’s Infant & Primary School to give a talk on wildlife, specifically birds, that the golf course is home too. After having made a presentation, they all then made their way to the golf course to hang up bird box’s, hand-painted by the children, in an effort to re-build ecosystem’s and bring more winged wildlife to the golf course! A lovely touch by the children of St. Vincents, Biora and Altrincham Golf!

RECOMMEND A FRIEND SCHEME
As you will be aware, recruitment is a struggle for most organisations at the moment and sadly we at Trafford Leisure are no different! We all know the effects is has on us and our teams when we aren’t fully staffed! So we’re asking for your help to try and fix our recruitment problems together! To support this we have reviewed and updated our recommend a friend/referral policy where we have increased the benefit to you from £50-£200 up to £200-£500 for anyone who recommends a friend to work for Trafford Leisure on a contractual basis. We published this improved policy and process on the 6th April and this policy is available via the Flex platform at Flex:Future Fit Training. Please do have a look and consider if you can recommend a Friend for any of our vacancies and earn yourself some £.

WHAT’S NEW? @ Stretford Sports Village
BIRTHDAY
SEASON
Carly Haselwood is our new Health & Wellbeing Manager at Trafford Leisure, and with c20 years’ experience in local government, Carly has successfully managed the strategic development and business growth of a variety of sustainable sport and physical activity interventions working collaboratively with both national and local stakeholders.
We’ve had some big birthdays to celebrate recently at Stretford Sports Village, with Swim Well manager Tessa Griffiths turning 30 & Swimming Teacher Anne Kenyon turning 50. A huge happy birthday to the both of you from everyone at Trafford Leisure, we hope you managed to celebrate in style!
A proud graduate of the new Greater Manchester Transformational Leadership Programme, Carly is a strong believer in adopting whole system thinking to improve health outcomes, combining a place-based approach to engage the least active people to move more, as well as utilising community assets to make the biggest impact towards behaviour change. Carly is influenced and inspired everyday by her husband and son and regularly enjoys family time in the great outdoors. In her free time, Carly participates, and sometimes competes, in mountain biking and trail running for her own personal health, wellbeing and motivation.
CARLY HESELWOOD
MEET THE TEAM TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP CEREMONY
8
VANESSA FRANCISCO Members of the Leadership Team at Trafford Leisure were invited to celebrate becoming part of the first two cohorts to complete the Transformation Leadership Programme, held by Future Fit & GM Active. Key staff in Greater Manchester’s community leisure and physical activity sector were selected to take part in this new programme, which aims to steer the transition from being ‘fitness and facilities’ managers to become future leaders of public health, wellbeing and communities. A big congratulations to all those who completed the course and we hope you enjoyed the celebrations!
We welcomed Vanessa to the Trafford Leisure team in November as our HR Generalist. Here’s what she had to say about her career so far in the Leisure industry: “I’ve enjoyed working in the crazy world that is the Leisure Industry for the past 10 years, no day is ever the same which I absolutely love. I’m a single mum to two daughters who, as the saying goes, very much keep me on my toes. I started my Leisure career at Hale Country Club & Spa as a receptionist, I went on to be a Duty manager, Membership manager and finally Office manager. Four years ago, I decided to take my Level 5 CIPD in Human Resources Management. I’m passionate about mental health, wellbeing but mostly supporting people within the workplace and the community and I am really looking forward to getting out and about in our centers to speak to people more over the coming months.” 13
PREHAB4CANCER TEAM
THANK YOU,
ANDY HILTON! Andy Hilton is bringing his 17 year career as Football Development Officer to a close. He will be greatly missed & has done a fantastic job throughout his time with us. Here’s what he had to say:
12
“I was asked by Jo Cherret to pick out my stand out moment and I’ll be honest I was stumped. How do you sum up 17 years in a paragraph? I suppose the thing I’m proudest of is something I feel we do well in the company. Its about the people. Yes we have new 3G pitches and changing rooms funded through my work that will benefit football for years but I’m proudest of the development of the people I’ve worked with. All my coaches from Carrington Advanced Coaching Centre have all surpassed me and gone on to high level coaching jobs with professional clubs and senior football organizations across the North West. The players with disabilities who treated every Wednesday in Stretford as the Champions League final and the Walking Footballers who thought they’d never walk never mind play football again. Thousands of football players of all ages who always say hello when they see me (even if I can’t quite remember where I know them from) and countless Coaches and PE teachers I’ve mentored who just wanted to know they were doing the right thing. I’m leaving football better than I found it and in the classic pundit way I get to leave saying “that’s football. People come, people go”. I’ve worked with some great people and made lifelong friends and I look back on it all with a smile. Football Development never stops. It’s just stopped for me.”
WE WON! Prehab4Cancer & recovery programme is a free exercise, nutrition and wellbeing scheme in Greater Manchester ran by GM Active. The incredible team behind this programme have recently won a HSJ Partnership Award for the Best Not For Profit organisation working in partnership with the NHS! Some fantastic news, congratulations to all those invovled and thank you for your brilliant efforts. 9

OFFICIAL OPENING DAY Almost two years later than planned, move Urmston was officially opened and celebrated on Thursday 3rd March 2022. Official proceedings were led by the Mayor, Cllr Laurence Walsh, The Leader of Trafford Council, Cllr Andrew Western, Cllr Liz Patel, Executive Member for Leisure and Culture, as well other special guests. The centre looked great, and the charley’s café provided the relaxed and social space we hoped it would be for all our customers to enjoy. It was fantastic to see the centre being so well used on the day, and even some of our special guests chose to join as a move Urmston member on the day. The team at move Urmston were outstanding and really showcased our human brand of move for the first time.
POOL POD WELL DONE TEAM MOVE WHAT AN ACHIEVEMENT 10
move Urmston has recently welcomed a new pool side facility - The Pool Pod! This is a multi-award winning swimming pool lift, and it was developed for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games and is now transforming pool access. It’s compact, easy to retrofit and appeals to swimmers with a wider range of mobility difficulties. The system can lower demands on pool staff and offers the greatest level of independence to customers. 11

It allows you to have up to 5 family and friends benefit from heavily discounted use of our facilities (including the Driving Range, Golf and Clip & Climb) with monthly direct debits at just £12.50 a month. AMAZING VALUE! We’ve also added Clip & Climb at Move Urmston and the Driving range to all staff passes at 50% off. We have over 60 people signed onto the new scheme already and we really want you and your friends/family to benefit from this so please have a look!
