L’ Isle

Château Alizés is located on the beautiful banks of the River L’Isle. Flowing from its source in the northeast of the region, close to the town of Nexon, the 255-kilometer stretch of river flows down the Dordogne passing through historic towns, such as Périgueux, to the region’s wine-making capital of Libourne.

With direct access to the river, you are free to take a rowing boat and picnic to enjoy exploring the neighboring villages and places of interest upstream, or row south towards the town of Mussidan.

For those feeling more adventurous and looking for an opportunity to get active, the river is the perfect location for canoeing, kayaking or stand-up paddling.

And if you enjoy the thrill of discovering buried treasure, then try your luck over on Rhum Cay, our very own private islet and see if you can find the hidden treasure—the clue is in the name! Or simply take a picnic and spend a few hours exploring this secluded and secret hideaway.

Fishing fans will find the river teeming with a variety of fish, including trout, carp, catfish, pike, perch and roach. Unwind as you enjoy a truly peaceful afternoon under the shade of the willow trees.

The shaded river adds the perfect element of peace and serenity during your stay, whether you choose to relax at the water’s edge, or decide to go further afield and explore the wonderful French countryside.

Les jardins

In the history of Château Alizés at Le Chaufourg the gardens have played an important role. Dating back to the 19th-century, Libéral Lacombe, the mayor of Sourzac and his wife Amanda Dambier, planted an English-style park. In the early 20th-century, Etienne Dambier and his wife Agathe drew on their love of scented flowers to create a section of the garden for old climbing roses.

In the mid-1960s when Georges Dambier began to renovate the Château, he enlisted the help of the Provençal landscape gardener, Tobie Loup de Viane. His garden designs were influenced by the charm of old English gardens and the sensuality of gardens found across the Mediterranean. The extensive grounds are home to a number of wild plants, cultivated flowers, and trees that have been on the land for generations.

Today, the Château has a variety of gardens that guests can enjoy, each one as special as the last. From the herb and vegetable garden that leads from the kitchen to the beautiful rose garden, lovingly restored with over a dozen different varieties of sweet-scented roses. The colorful scented blooms envelop the garden, making it the perfect location for a special moment with a loved one.

Brush past the pretty borders by the pool and wait as the heady scent of lavender fills the air with delicate floral notes.

Each of our ground floor suites opens out onto its own courtyard, surrounded by a variety of plants and flowers chosen to complement the luxurious nature of the Château.

The gardens at Château Alizés were designed with the same care and attention as the Château itself. Lovingly maintained, our gardens offer you a chance to feel inspired and enjoy getting back to nature.

The natural

natural spring

As you stroll around the extensive and perfectly maintained heritage grounds, every path you follow brings a wonderful surprise. Heading away from the Château towards the impressive collection of trees at the bottom of the main gardens, you’ll find yourself totally secluded and immersed in the beauty of your natural surroundings.

Hidden from plain sight, just behind the main grounds, and playing an important part of the Dambier family’s remarkable history is the Château’s natural spring. Wanting to give something back to the local community, the Dambier’s created an area where local villagers could access and collect their natural spring water. Today, local villagers still have access and regularly visit the area to collect their water.

Discover the remarkable history surrounding the Château’s spring for yourself and enjoy your own taste of the ‘eau de la vie’.

The well

Located close to the Château and opposite the fountain, at the front, you will find our well, complete with original features. The hand-dug well has been on the property since the 17th-century and collects its source from a deep water table below the Manor House. Over recent years, the well has been lovingly restored and is the perfect location to throw a coin and make a wish or two.

The billiard room

With it’s high, cathedral-style ceiling and medieval style chandeliers, the regal billiard room is certainly one of the most decadent rooms within the Château.

The room opens up to seating area to sit and friends, or simply with display, you can admire bier family heirlooms, antiques, that are situated in pride

In the center of this special room, the focal point is our billiards table, ready and waiting for a game. The baize-covered table is the ideal spot to meet with fellow guests or to engage in a game or two.

The billiard room fireplace

On the next level of the billard room, there is a grand fireplace, where you can retire with a glass of Bordeaux and enjoy the crackling fire, or browse through the original magazines that showcase George Dambier’s famous fashion photography.

To the right of the fireplace, you’ll find an original wooden staircase which leads to a mezzanine floor library. It’s here that you’ll find our tribute to the late world-renowned photographer, Georges Dambier. Famed for his style and eye for detail, Dambier took his ancestral family home and with love, care, and attention, turned the Château into a luxury retreat.

The piano room

Set within the heart of the Château, the piano room is a throwback to a different time. The baby grand piano stands proudly in the center of the room decorated with original beams and an ornamentally carved fireplace.

Musical guests will enjoy the opportunity to try out the piano and play a concerto or two from the original music books left by Georges Dambier.

With doors that open out onto the fountain courtyard and onto the main garden, it’s not hard to imagine this fabulous room as a backdrop for Georges and his guests of artists, models and French elite as they enjoyed the finest Champagne and conversation.

Within the piano room, you’ll find a decoratively carved wooden staircase that leads up to one of the original bedrooms, Suite de Guillaume, which looks out onto the stunning garden and pool area.
