Welcome Red Angus Enthusiast! This year is a very special year for our operation, it is our 10th Sale! It has taken a lot of blood sweat and tears to make it this far and we couldn’t be more proud of the offering we have for you this year. Thank you for showing interest in our operation and the Red Angus breed. The enthusiasm for this great breed of cattle has not slowed down! More feeders are wanting Red Angus influenced calves, more cow/calf operators are appreciating the attributes of a Red Angus cow and more juniors are wanting to show a Red Angus heifer. There are times in the business when you feel like you are on an uphill battle. For example, when you are standing in a yard full of mud trying to get that one stubborn cow to go up the hill to the catch pen. Every step you take you feel like you slide half a step back down. If only you had put on the mud boots that morning instead of the cowboy boots, you would have much better traction. Right now is one of those times in the industry when you need to make sure that you are putting the right genetics into your program that will help you make the most progress. Quality cattle will be what achieves your goals most efficiently. We pride ourselves on producing high quality cattle that not only work for junior projects but that work as cows in production. Our motto has and always will be “We DON’T Breed Show cattle, We Show Breeding cattle.” We do not focus on just the showring when making our sire selections. We have to be able to market our bulls to the commercial cattlemen and our females to the youth of the industry. We also pride ourselves on working with the juniors that buy cattle from us. It is just as rewarding, if not more rewarding, for us to see our juniors develop into knowledgable young cattlemen and women than to get a purple banner. We hope you are able to make it to the sale, if not, you can always watch online at www.dvauction.com or bid on the phone. The sale will start at 6:30 with supper served before. Come early to look at the cattle, see old friends and make new ones! Very Truly, Cheryl, Cassie, Ramsey, Daniel & Hailey Johnson

THE

HI QUEEN FAMILY This year we are starting the sale off with three tremendous full sisters that are sure to get your attention. Their dam, Hi Queen 861U, is the definition of a brood cow. She stands on a solid foundation and is loaded with length and volume. Her characteristics that make her stand out as a great donor are the same characteristics I see in these three daughters. Their sire, Yardmaster, has been doing a great job year-after-year. He consistently stamps them with the soft, easy keeping look with the profile we strive to achieve in our females. Lot one is the fastest growing of the three. She strikes you from every angle with her balance and smoothness. We are retaining 50% interest in lot one. The Lot two female is the smoothest made; longest patterned heifer of the three. She is also the dark red one of the group, which makes her even more eye appealing. The lot three female is the moderate frame super

MISS PAN FAMILY We have had a lot of great females come out of the Miss Pan cow family. This one takes the cake when it comes to being the best at combining it all in a balanced package. Rock Star daughters are known for being high performing, easy keeping and loaded with red meat. Lot four has those qualities but on a more refined skeleton. She is long, smooth shouldered, good hipped and feminine. Don’t forget to take a look at her numbers, an actual BW of 76 and a WW of 655. Her EPDs alone can do the talking for this female. This one will be able to show off in the show ring AND be the front pasture kind when she is done showing.

Last Spring we decided to put in some embryos that were a little older. However, ones we knew where super good matings. The lot five heifer calf is a full sister to SLGN Miss Pan’s United, the dam to the lot four female. Right there is proof enough to show these genetics work! Darcee has always been one to catch our eye with her depth of body and beautiful profile. She is a unique breeding piece because of her skeletal design and genetic make-up. She may or may not overwhelm you with muscle but when they are as pretty as her, it is easy to find a heavy muscled bull to mate her to. Red Legends 8

Every time Ramsey and I are in the barn working with these heifers our opinions change. Which one is the best of the three? The day we pictured, Ramsey told me the lot eight heifer was the one that would be the best. I thought lot six was going to be the best one in the end as a cow. By the time we pictured lot seven I was thinking maybe we were both wrong and she was going to be the late bloomer of the group. The pedigree for these females is a little different than what we have been using. The Wagon Master bull sold in our 2010 bull sale for $55,000. There was a lim-

The dam to these heifers was the 2009 Reserve National Champion Female. The Lakota cow was as wide as she was long. Her calves have always had a good look to them. Just recently a daughter to Lakota was Champion Female at the Saddle & Sirloin Futurity in Bryan, Texas. The heifer was from an embryo we sold.

THE

COWBOY CUT FAMILY

This is the last female we will be able to offer out of the Monte cow family. Unfortunately Monte 91 died last year. However, this is the best way to end a cow family becaue she definitely saved the best one for last. I absolutely love this heifer because of her long clean front third; her strong top line; and her pedigree. This pedigree is designed to produce highly maternal females that will still have enough performance and carcass traits to produce solid bulls. It is a win win with this one!

This dark cherry red heifer is bound to catch your eye every time you walk into the pen. Lot ten is a freak for the amount of muscle she has. At the same time, she is feminine through her front third and does not have that big shouldered you would expect with that much muscle. Her dam is an outcross to any other red pedigree and Royal Lady was as stout as you could make one. This female is moderate framed, heavy muscled, well balanced and ready to make an outstanding cow. Red Legends 10

THE

PERSUASION

FAMILY These two heifers may not be direct daughters of the Persuasion cow but they still have the Persuasion blood in them. The old saying comes to mind, “You can’t outrun your genetics.” In this case that is a good thing. The lot 11 female as a two-month old baby was hands down the best one in the group. She hit a rough patch around four months but she is in full swing now. She has the clean neck, swoop belly and profile to be a good jackpot heifer. The Cowboy Kind calves have been doing well in and out of the showring. The Champion Futurity heifer at the 2016 NAJRAE was sired by him.

It is always a good feeling to see young females, that are just getting into the prime of their production, producing outstanding daughters. The dam to lot 12 is no stranger to the showring. She was Reserve Champion female as a calf at the Iowa State Fair and NAILE in 2011. Then she was Grand Champion female in the National Junior Show in 2012 and turned around that afternoon and was the Reserve Champion female in the open show. She is a great cow now but I believe her true time to shine is still ahead if she keeps producing females like this one.

THE

YONINAH FAMILY This was one of the first pictures we posted on facebook this year. She got a lot of attention! Another dark cherry red heifer that will catch the eye of anyone she walks by. Lot 13 is the type of heifer that will be great to jackpot BUT she will be even more exciting when she gets into production. I love this heifer’s dark hoof, big bone, long spine and head. She has a lot of the right pieces that help make the sire selection a little easier during breeding season.

Daniel is the best ear getter in NW Iowa! Lot 14 follows her sires side a little more closely. She is a moderate frame dark red heiferr. She will be a great one for any new junior that wants to have a great first experience. The first day this heifer was tied up, she started chewing her cud and layed down after a bit. These two heifers are in the top 6% or better in WW, YW, ME and CW. They look good on paper and in person, just the way we want our cattle to be. Red Legends 12

THE

SLGN

FAMILY Lot 15 is a later maturing heifer that has really started to come-on in the last couple of weeks. We will be taking videos in another week and I am sure she will look different from this picture. Her 8-year old dam has been doing such a good job for us that we have now added her to our donor pen. You will be seeing a lot more of the Samantha name in our future catalogs. The sire, X-Files, has been a tremendous AI and herd sire for our program. His daughters develop into beautiful cows that have a lot of maternal in them. You can take this heifer home and keep the halter on her for a year or turn her out with your replacement heifers. Either way I know you will have a bright future with her.

This female has a little bit of old school genetics running through her. I think that is really what appeals to me. Her sire is a new up and coming sire for us. We have used him for three breeding seasons. His calves continue to impress me. Nighthawk’s dam, Lana, was an outstanding heifer and has been a tremendous producer for Chris Polzin in Minnesota. Her maternal granddam is the dam to the Triple Crown Winner, Super Champ, that Foxcross exhibited in ‘02-’03 show season. Quality runs deep in this female.

DON’T BREED SHOW CATTLE Dam to Lot 17 This is the last female to sell out of the Precision cow. We do not have any other Precision daughters, we are retaining 50% interest in this female. We think this female has a very bright future for her. This dark cherry red heifer caught the attention of a lot of people at the Iowa State Fair. Her front third is so sharp and clean as it comes out the top of her shoulder allowing her to show herself off. She has the depth of rib, muscle and structure that will take her places. In the ‘04 show season we had Precision and Peek A Boo. Precision was my pick and Peek A Boo was my dad’s pick. I would say today, I finally won the debate on who picked the better heifer that year!

A later maturing heifer out of the popular AI stud bull, Samurai. This is the first calf we have gotten out of him and we like what we see. This heifer has a lot of muscle in her and I project that she will scan really well as a yearling. The dam, Adina 4039, has been a popular cow in our operation over the last five years. She produces females that have good feet, bone and high quality udders. She is a “no miss” type of cow when it comes to mating her. This heifer was a little more difficult to halter and I would recommend her for a more experienced junior.

Lot 20 is a full sister to the $15,000 heifer that sold in our 2014 Red Legends Sale. Debbie may not be as “fancy” but certainly as good. This moderate framed heifer has the dark cherry red color that we love to look at. She is smooth, feminine and will be an easy keeper for her new owner. The maternal side of the family is very hard to pick a hole in. The Adina cow has produced high selling bulls and females along with the 190Y cow. THE

The lot 21 heifer has always been one to catch your eye in the pasture. The Nighthawk progeny have a nice dark red hair coat. This girl follows suit - “We don’t breed show cattle, we show breeding cattle.” This heifer is the epitomy of what that means. She will be a really nice heifer project for a junior but her real time to shine will be when she is a momma cow. Based on her pedigree, I would bet she is going to have a beautiful udder and produce calves that top the weight chart at weaning time!

Sire to Lots 21 & 22. The lot 22 heifer is the youngest female in our sale offering. She may be green but she just needs a little more time to catch up to the others. At this stage in life two months makes a really big difference. This heifer would be a good first time project for a beginner. Her dam is a moderate frame, low maintenance cow for us that does a good job every year. Red Legends 16

THE

X-ACTLY FAMILY Lot 23 is greener in her condition than some of her contemporaries, but that isn’t going to hinder anyone’s ability to see how good this one will be. She follows the type and kind of her sire, Yardmaster. She is angular through her shoulder and square made, giving her that beautiful profile with the swoop to her belly that everyone wants. There are Yardmaster daughters in production across the United States and the verdict is in; the first calf heifers do an outstanding job of keeping their condition while having beautiful udders and fast growing calves. There isn’t much more we could ask for from this fist-time mom!

Lot 24 is a bigger framed female that just keeps getting better with time. This heifer has the longest and cleanest front of any females in the sale. She is extremely long spined, but with all that length, she still has plenty of shape to her under carriage. Cowboy Kind calves are starting to show up across the US. He is consistant in stamping them. I believe this heifer has potential. Red Legends 17

THE

ROCK STAR FAMILY This dark red heifer may be moderate in size but she is loaded with brood cow potential. Our main focus on mating cattle is to focus on producing cattle that look good and stay at or above average on our EPDs. It is always rewarding when you can look at a female’s EPDs and see their performance on paper actually matches their physical attribute. This heifer is one of those occasions. We are selling her dam as lot 35. If you want to know what kind of machine this one came from. Take a look at her and buy this heifer with confidence.

Northine Rock Star 911U Lot 26 comes from a tremendous cow family. She has been producing females that are easy keeping and maternally focused. This heifer is going to follow in those same tracks. Her sire is an outcross from anything we have used in our program. This outcross comes in handy when its time to choose a bull to breed her to. Her BW EPD is high but her actual is only a 75. Take a look at the rest of her EPDs too. Red Legends 18

This young heifer has an extremely bright future ahead of her. Her dam is a full sister to the Meado-West Peek-A-Boo. We sold 8119U in our 2008 Red Legends sale. Thanks to Dallas Dial for allowing us to bring her back to Iowa and flush her, we are able to continue to offer these outstanding genetics. By blood this heifer is a full sister to the 2013 NAILE Reserve Champion Female. Lot 28 is made as smooth as one can be. Her best feature may be how structurally sound she is. She walks like a cat because of how correct her angles are are from front to back. This female already has a win under her belt, she was division champion at the Iowa State Fair. We are going to retain 50% interest in this female because of how sound she is.

FAMILY

We are concluding the sale offering with two relatives of the PeekA-Boo family. Both of these heifers have had a lot of pressure on them since the day they were born. We knew they had potential to be head turners and they have fulfilled our hopes. Lot 27 is out of the 2008 Reserve Champion female from the National Junior Show. Her dam sold in our first sale ten years ago. We were fortunate to get two flushes out of her. This female has the muscle, bone, eye appeal and length of spine that we demand from our females. She is as dimensional as they come. We took her to our county fair open feeder calf show. She was selected as the Grand Champion Feeder Heifer. The judge’s reason was that she was not only good now but she was going to be the best cow in the end. This heifer will be the type of female producing outstanding heifers and powerful bulls which will make you more money in the end, the most important part. We will retain 50% interest in this female.

THE

BRED HEIFERS This year we only had 3 fall born heifer calves to breed so we just held them over to calve first thing next Spring. These two full sisters are maternal sisters to lot four. They are backed by powerful genetics on the top and bottom side of their pedigree. The shear mass these two heifers posess will catch everyones eye. Lot 29 is long, smooth and AI bred 4/19 to Andras New Direction and PE to SLGN 403P Cohen. Cohen is a Cutting Edge X Persuasion son. This female is going to put the pounds on her calves. The way she is built I think she will be capable of producing stout bulls and females that are loaded with brood cow potential.

This heifer is the softer made of the two sisters. When we were getting ready to go to the Iowa State Fair this year we were kicking ourselves for not halter breaking this heifer as a calf, she looks that good. She really excels from her shoulders back. I love how full she is in her heart. She explodes with dimension from her heart all the way back. She carries a long stout hip and can really get out and move. We AI bred this female 4/1 to Andras New Direction and PE to SLGN 403P Cohen. Red Legends 20

THE

BRED HEIFERS

This heifer may not be the biggest in the bred heifer offering but she can hold her own when it comes to being a high quality female. Her maternal granddam, Sheba, has been a great producer for us. The longevity that is built in them because of their structural correctness is what really gives you a return on your investment. A 3/4 sister to this female was selected as the 2016 Futurity Champion female at the NAJRAE. She was AI bred 5/11 to Andras New Direction and PE to SLGN 403P Cohen.

Lot 32 has always had a special place in my heart. She is so strong in her heart and carries that depth all the way back into her flank. I love her length of body and hip. This female goes back to a tremendous Doc Holliday cow. Her sire is known for producing females that have sound udder attachment and teat size. This bred will be one that will turn you are quick profit. AI bred 5/11 to Andras New Direction and PE to SLGN 403P Cohen. Red Legends 21

THE

BRED HEIFERS Need to add length to your cattle operaion? Lot 33 is one that is as long as a limousine. She will be sure to add growth to your operation. Her dam sold to the Presnells in North Carolina last year sight unseen. When she arrived in NC they were blown away with how big she was. I believe this female will follow the type and kind of her mom very closely. We AI bred this female 5/11 to Andras New Direction and PE her to SLGN 403P Cohen.

This will probably be the last 100% black angus female we will ever sell and I think she may be the best black bred heifer we have ever offered. Smooth, deep and stout, just the way we like our cows. Her pedigree is backed by a maternal power house on the bottom side. Last year we sold three daughters out of this dam in our sale and they were smokin hot! We AI bred this heifer to HF Tiger on 5/11 and I know this pedigree is going to work. The Tiger calves we have had come easy and grow fast. Red Legends 22

This is an interesting combination of genetics. We are anxious to see the outcome! Calves out of this mating will not be hitting the ground, at our place, until next fall - not soon enough for us. Bojangles hasd been out breeding cows all summer and came back to the show barn at the Glew’s. They think he is just too good to not exhibit. We completely agree with them. Bojangles was the Reserve Champion bull at the Iowa State Fair in August and the Grand Champion Bull at the South Dakota State Fair in September. Samantha is a tremendous female in her own right.
