Parent Letter Dear Parents/Guardians, For this years Halloween Extravaganza in the Tractor Shed Theatre we are doing something totally out of this world! We will be taking on an alien invasion in Mrs. Rice’s front yard. In order to accomplish this large task we and the set must look like aliens. This means that our costume, makeup, set, lights, and sound must portray a real alien invasion. Starting with costumes, we will be wearing all black from our necks to our feet. The Tractor Shed has taken the time and money to go out and buy almost 400 dollars in costumes alone! Unfortunately, this is only for gloves, robes, and shoes. So, this means that black long sleeve shirts and tight black pants are still needed for the costume to be completed. Now, this is where you parents/guardians get involved. Your child needs to have these items by October 27th at the latest so that we can be sure this show runs as smoothly as possible. These items are not expensive and you can pick them up at the local walmart. Other expenses of our Halloween show is candy. We need candy, and lots of it. Last year we went through nearly 33 entire bags of candy for the trick-or-treaters around the neighborhood. We realize that candy may be expensive but we cannot do it alone. Students are required to being at least 2 bags of candy for their show. It would be greatly appreciated if you could stop by your local dollar store and pick up a few bags to help us out.

Storage: We placed all of the student’s costumes in a box with a number on it (from last years performance of Too Much Light Makes The Baby Go Blind). Each student was given their number and were responsible to maintain that box.

The Final Look: Each student was in charge of their black shirt, pants, and socks (if needed) for the show. Thus, making the outfit all black and uniform.

Looking back and moving Forward Working with costumes was something I never thought I would have been involved in or interested in doing. When the class decided on doing aliens for our Halloween Extravaganza, I thought it would the perfect time for me to learn a little more on costumes. I figured it would be a small step into the world of costume. However, I did not expect to run into as many issues as I did. Each crew we were put in started on Pinterest to find out the general idea of what we were looking for in the design. For costumes, we knew that we wanted to have robes and an all black costume. However, we ran into trouble with finding what to do with our hands. We talked about just painting our hands black. Then we had idea of gloves but that brought a whole different series of questions. Such as, will the finger of the gloves be long or will they glow in the dark, or what if they had lights in them so we wouldnâ€™t have to worry about charging them before the show. Finally, we went on Amazon to see what they had that could help us in our decision making process. We then found LED gloves that were perfect for what we were looking for (see images above). We ordered twelve pairs of gloves and moved on in the costume process. Next, we focused on the robes. We knew from the start we wanted all black uniform robes. We asked ourselves what we wanted out of the robes. We set ourselves back in square one, Pinterest. Unfortunately, we did not see anything too outstanding there so we went back to amazon and from there we found black robes (see pictures above) that were not too expensive. Then ordered twelve robes and moved on to our feet. We wanted everyones shoes to match each other so we did not look as human like. But, of course, that was an unrealistic thing to expect. Then the idea came of maybe just wearing black socks but that was thrown out. So, we went on amazon to find what kind of cheap black thin shoes we could buy so we could keep the theme dead on. We ended up finding water shoes that were thin enough to wear socks underneath to cover our skin. Now all we had to do was wait for the arrival of our orders. The robes and shoes came when they said they would. The gloves on the other hand, did not. One pair showed up on time but the other eleven did not. We called the store and had them sent to us after a small argument with amazon. This had all of us very stressed out considering it

was only days before the show and we didn't have our full costume. We got the costumes very shortly after this interaction and were able to perform. During the performance the hoods became an issue since they wouldn't stay up and e didn’t really think that they were going to be an issue. Actors also did not bring their costumes to final rehearsal to see how the costumes were going to work the night of the show. Then, since makeup committee said we were putting black paint down our necks and costumes didn’t know this until the night before show we were not able to make adjustment to our robe being on the makeup on our neck causing the makeup to break up and come off our necks. Another problem with our gloves sparked on the night of. The gloves lights started to stop working and for some of the actors an entire glove went out. Moving on in theatre and if I ever do costumes again, I will be more aware of what my costume design will affect. Also, there needs be better communication between committees if they affect each other. Without communication the class cannot thrive. I think in general the class pulled off the alien theme and the costumes worked for what its purpose was.
