50 YEARS OF JAYAR SINCE 1976

![]()

From
a single prefab in Aylesford to one of the UK’s most recognised independent motor factor businesses.
The mid-1970s were a period of change in Britain’s automotive world. Car ownership was increasing, independent garages were on the rise, and motorists sought reliable access to parts without the high costs associated with
main dealerships. John Ratcliffe recognised a gap, independent mechanics needed a dependable, local supplier who understood their needs and could source the right parts quickly and consistently.
“ What began as a single trade counter in Aylesford would grow into one of the UK’s largest independent Motor Factors. “
Nearly five decades later, Jayar Car Parts has grown into a substantial regional network with more than 70 branches, hundreds of employees, a far-reaching delivery fleet and warehousing operation, and a reputation that has earned the trust of both professional
mechanics and the general public. As we celebrate Jayar’s 50th anniversary, it is the perfect moment to look back at the man who started it all, the values that built the business, and the journey that turned a single workshop in Aylesford into a proud family legacy.

Reflecting on the journey, Looking to the future.
As Jayar marks five decades in business, this special edition brings together the people, partnerships and progress that have shaped the company. From its beginnings in Aylesford
to a multi-branch regional presence, the story of Jayar is defined not only by growth, but by consistency of values and commitment to service.
Built on independence. Driven by service.
In an industry dominated by large dealerships and national chains, John Ratcliffe believed there was a different way to build a business. One grounded in independence, local knowledge and genuine relationships.
He understood that independent garages needed more than just access to parts. They needed a dependable partner. A supplier who listened, responded quickly and stood behind what they delivered.
From the very beginning, the focus was simple. Provide the right parts, at the right time, with the right advice. No unnecessary complication. No compromise on quality. Just consistency, reliability and trust.
This philosophy shaped every decision, from how stock was selected to how customers were treated at the trade counter. Growth was never the only goal. Service was.
“ We don’t just supply parts. We support businesses. “

One prefab. One vision. Now one of the UK’s most recognised independent motor factors.
John Ratcliffe did not define success by size, but by standards. He was a hands-on leader who believed in understanding the customer, knowing the detail and standing behind every commitment. The early years demanded resilience and long hours, and he set the tone from the start.
Jayar grew through consistency and earned loyalty. Service came first. Relationships mattered. Reputation was everything.
Fifty years on, those principles continue to guide the business.
Building a regional presence.
As demand increased and reputation strengthened, Jayar’s footprint began to expand beyond its original Aylesford base. What started as a local operation gradually developed into a growing network of branches serving garages and motorists across the region.
Each new location was established with the same guiding principles: dependable stockholding, responsive service and strong local relationships. Growth was measured and deliberate, ensuring that standards were never
compromised in the pursuit of scale. Investment followed expansion. Warehousing capacity increased, stock ranges broadened and the delivery fleet expanded to meet customer demand. Alongside this operational growth came a strengthening team, with experienced staff playing a central role in supporting the company’s evolving network.
Through steady development rather than rapid acceleration, Jayar built a presence that combined regional reach with local understanding.

Over time, the next generation became increasingly involved in the business. John’s son and daughter stepped forward not to redefine the company, but to preserve and strengthen what had already been built. The transition was not about change for its own sake. It was about continuity. Maintaining standards. Protecting relationships. Building on trust.
Under family leadership, Jayar has continued to evolve while staying true to its original principles. The scale has grown, the infrastructure has modernised, and the network has expanded, but the culture remains grounded in the same values that shaped the business from the beginning.
Today, that continuity of leadership stands as one of Jayar’s greatest strengths.

Jayar is a business I’ve long respected, not just for its performance but for its people and culture. Having known individuals within the company, I’d already seen the pride and commitment firsthand, so joining felt like a natural step. As General Manager, my focus is straightforward, keep the business running smoothly, support our teams and maintain strong supplier relationships.
It’s a hands-on role, which suits me. What truly sets Jayar apart is its familyowned ethos; there’s a genuine loyalty and pride that’s been built over decades. Our growth, including the acquisition of Independent Motor Factors, reflects a consistent approach to making the right decisions. Looking ahead, we remain focused on investing in our people, network and infrastructure to ensure long-term success.

“The foundations of this business were laid 50 years ago through hard work, family values and determination. My father put in those foundations and started the build, and over the years we have continued to build on that with an incredible team of loyal, hardworking people, creating something that the family are immensely proud of today.
As Managing Director, I genuinely believe we have the best team in the industry, and with that team behind us, we are going to build something truly exceptional, something that has never been seen before in the independent motor factor world.
We already have 35 target areas mapped out for expansion, with another five branches expected to open within the next few months and many more planned beyond that.”

The team at Comline Group extend their warmest congratulations to Jayar. We’re proud to support your continued success and look forward to many more years of partnership!

It may be possible to visually identify this problem prior to disassembly but there are some other symptoms to watch out for. The first is potential problems with the ABS system when fitting the new disc. Quite simply, if the ring and sensor are in direct contact, they will not function as intended or communicate with the vehicle’s ABS system. In addition, the mislocated ABS sensor on the mounting point may have caused visible damage to the ABS ring on the disc being replaced. The image above illustrates the typical damage you should expect to see.

Remove the ABS sensor from the vehicle.
Remove any corrosion from the sensor mounting point. If the sensor is installed within a guide tube, remove the sensor from the tube and remove any corrosion that is present.
Check the ABS sensor for damage and replace if required. The original sensor can be safely re-installed if there are no visible signs of damage.
Install the new brake disc ensuring correct air gap between ABS sensor and ABS ring.
Check to ensure proper function of vehicle ABS system.

As the business grew, so too did the involvement of the Ratcliffe family. The evolution from JR Car Parts to Jayar Car Parts reflected not only the development of the brand, but also the broader identity the business was forming, a family-run company with a strong regional presence and a personal approach to service.
Over the years, family members joined the organisation, each contributing to different aspects of the business.
This helped the company maintain the integrity and culture John had built from the very beginning. Decisions were guided by long-term thinking, stability, and service, not short-term gains but a philosophy that shaped Jayar’s reputation in the trade.
“ Family involvement ensured that Jayar’s culture and values were protected as the business evolved. “

In its 50th anniversary year, Jayar took a significant strategic step forward with the acquisition of Independent Motor Factors.
This move was not simply about growth in size. It was about strengthening capability, expanding regional coverage and reinforcing Jayar’s position as one of the largest independent motor factors in England.
By bringing together shared expertise, infrastructure and long-standing relationships, the acquisition further enhances service levels, stock availability and operational scale across the network.
It represents a continuation of the company’s long-term approach: steady, considered expansion built on trust, stability and commitment to customers.

In 1976, John Ratcliffe established the business in Aylesford, operating from a small prefab unit built on the site. Originally trading as JR Car Parts, the company was founded on hard work, strong relationships and a deep understanding of the motor trade.

As demand grew, the business expanded beyond its original premises. Additional branches were opened, strengthening Jayar’s presence across Kent and building the foundations of a growing regional network.
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Jayar experienced significant growth. Branches were established across Kent and neighbouring counties, supported by increased warehousing capacity, expanded stockholding and a growing workforce.

Entering the 21st century, Jayar continued to invest in its infrastructure. Computerised systems, online catalogues and enhanced logistics strengthened service levels, supported by a delivery fleet exceeding one hundred vans across the region.
In its 50th anniversary year, Jayar further strengthened its position through the acquisition of IMF. This strategic move reinforces the company’s standing as one of the largest independent motor factors in England & Wales and reflects its continued commitment to long-term growth.
As demand increased, Jayar began expanding beyond its original premises in Aylesford.
Additional branches were opened across Kent and neighbouring counties, strengthening the company’s regional footprint and improving accessibility for trade customers.
Each new location was carefully considered, positioned to support local garages while maintaining the service standards that defined the business from the beginning. Growth was steady rather than rushed. The priority was sustainability, not scale for its own sake.

Expansion required more than new branches. It demanded investment in people, warehousing and logistics.
Stockholding increased, warehousing operations expanded and a dedicated delivery fleet strengthened service levels across the region. At the same time, the workforce grew
across sales, purchasing, warehousing and transport, creating a broader operational base to support customers efficiently.
By aligning physical growth with operational discipline, Jayar ensured that service quality remained consistent as the network expanded.

As the business expanded, so too did the need for stronger systems and operational control. Jayar invested in computerised stock management, digital catalogues and integrated ordering platforms to ensure accuracy, speed and consistency across its network.
Behind the scenes, technology improved forecasting, inventory planning and
distribution efficiency. For customers, it meant faster response times, improved availability and reliable service at scale.
Digital transformation was not about replacing relationships, but strengthening them with smarter processes and better support.

More than expansion, it was a way of working.
What makes Jayar distinctive is not merely its size or its product range although both are impressive, but the culture John Ratcliffe established. His belief in loyalty, fairness, hard work, and person-to-person service shaped the business at every level.
Former and long-serving employees often describe the company as a family, supportive, close-knit, and united by a shared commitment to customers. Many recall John’s
approachable leadership style, his habit of visiting branches, asking after staff, and taking a genuine interest in the people who helped build the business with him.
Customers, too, felt this culture. Mechanics trusted Jayar because they trusted John. They knew he would do what it took to support them, and that trust has extended across generations.

By the 1990s, Jayar had become a wellestablished name across Kent and neighbouring counties. The company saw significant expansion during this period, driven by increasing demand from both professional garages and the retail public.
The opening of new branches allowed Jayar to serve customers across a growing geographic area, ensuring quicker delivery times and better stock availability. Warehousing facilities expanded, allowing the company to hold an impressive array of components from a wide range of leading automotive brands,
including filters, lubricants, suspension components, braking systems, ignition parts, and accessories.
As the business scale increased, so did the workforce. The company grew to employ hundreds of staff, many of whom remained with Jayar for decades. Long-serving employees are often the backbone of any successful family business, and Jayar is no exception. Staff were trained not just in parts knowledge, but in customer service, a value John insisted on from the very beginning.

The automotive industry has undergone profound transformation over the past five decades. From mechanical simplicity to computerised vehicle systems, from local supply chains to global sourcing networks, the pace of change continues to accelerate.
Today’s vehicles demand advanced diagnostics, specialised components, and faster access to increasingly complex product ranges. Electrification, hybrid technology, connected vehicle systems and sustainability initiatives are reshaping both the workshop environment and customer expectations.
For independent motor factors, this evolution presents both challenge and opportunity. Jayar has consistently invested in infrastructure, digital systems, supplier partnerships and staff development to remain aligned with industry demands. By combining traditional trade knowledge with modern operational capability, the business ensures customers receive the right parts, at the right time, with the right expertise behind them.
As the industry evolves, adaptability remains essential. Experience, however, remains invaluable.
From the very beginning, service has been the defining principle of Jayar.

Over five decades, that commitment has never wavered.
Whether serving independent garages, trade professionals, or members of the
public, Jayar’s approach remains consistent. Knowledgeable staff. Well-stocked branches. Efficient delivery. Clear communication.
Technology has advanced and operations have grown, but the philosophy remains unchanged. Service is not a department. It is the culture that underpins every branch, every delivery, and every interaction.
It is this steady commitment that has earned trust across generations and continues to define the Jayar name today.

Fifty years is more than a milestone. It represents relationships formed, challenges overcome, and a reputation earned steadily over time.
From a modest beginning in Aylesford to a network of branches serving communities across the region, Jayar’s journey has been defined not by rapid expansion alone, but by consistency and commitment.
At every stage of growth, the values established in 1976 have remained central. Loyalty. Integrity. Hard work. Personal service.
These principles shaped the culture of the business, guided its decisions, and strengthened its relationships with customers, suppliers and employees alike.
As Jayar reflects on five decades of progress, the focus remains clear. Continue building responsibly. Continue supporting customers. Continue investing in people.
The story of Jayar is not simply about parts or branches. It is about trust, carried forward across generations.
