Since their inception in 2015, The Furniture Awards have become a key highlight of the January Furniture Show, with the aim of identifying and honouring the best talent across the furniture and interiors sector. The entries were reviewed and shortlisted by a panel of industry professionals from retail, manufacturing and other sectors. The winners of each category will be announced during the awards ceremony sponsored by WorldFirst, which takes place at 5.30pm on Sunday, January 19th, at the Social Studio in Hall 2.

The Furniture Awards give these outstanding players the platform to share their stories and achievements.”
The awards programme, sponsored by WorldFirst, provide a chance for exhibitors to gain recognition for their innovation, design excellence, and contribution to the furniture industry, making it an unmissable event for anyone looking to stay ahead in the world of interiors.

Winner: Alpha Designs Upholstery
Alpha Designs is a rare example of how a relative newcomer can make an impact in an industry dominated by long-established names. Having started life in a unit in Bilston in 2010, Alpha Designs now runs two fully operational factories, employs some 200 people and makes around 2000 sofas each week, fuelled by an inhouse design and development team. Flying the flag for British-made upholstery, and demonstrating that young blood and fresh ideas can make a difference, Alpha Designs is an inspiration.
Highly Commended: Lebus Upholstery

Winner: Qualita
Qualita’s story has it all – cost engineering, manufacturing efficiency, effective fulfilment partnerships, and eminently commercial product. Supplementing its modern manufacturing facility in Lithuania, Qualita works closely with third-party manufacturers across the globe, enabling it to meet demand in the most appropriate manner. In the UK, its Qualita, Stockholm and Shadows collections represent a varied cabinet furniture portfolio with oak at its heart – and the business also operates across Europe, and further afield, fuelled by its impressive licensing deal with Laura Ashley.
Highly Commended: Tomasella Industria Mobili

Winner: Whitemeadow Furniture
Classy, high-spec and functional, Whitemeadow’s latest models reflect just part of what makes Suttonin-Ashfield’s upholstery giant a design powerhouse. Whitemeadow’s design studio has a knack for creating commercially viable product that hits the right price points, often putting new slants on old ideas, but always among the first to embrace new approaches, with an eye on the next generation of furniture designers.
Highly Commended: A.L.F. UNO

Winner: Iconography
A technical agency specialising in web-based business solutions, Iconography boasts a growing roster of satisfied customers, and its recent project for Haskins Furniture demonstrates just how much the operations behind furniture retail can be streamlined by embracing an integrated IT system with the right partner. With capabilities spanning ecommerce, operations, store and stock management, and a view on frontend performance as much as back-end efficiency, Iconography also shines for its excellent customer service and industry-specific expertise.

January Furniture Show, NEC, Birmingham, January 19-22 2025, Hall 4, Stand C26

Hooker Furnishings Corporation, one of the largest publicly traded furniture companies in the US, and a global leader in design and manufacture, will make its UK debut at the upcoming January Furniture Show. Paul Farley, Editor-in-Chief at the show’s Principal Media Partner, Furniture News, spoke to CEO Jeremy Hoff to find out more …
Why are you bringing Hooker Furnishings to the UK?
We have a really good domestic growth strategy, but to grow exponentially we need to go to other parts of the world.
I was at the 2024 January Furniture Show, with Ian [Crowther, a well-known furniture agent/distributor and Hooker’s ‘man on the ground’ in the UK] and Brad [Miller, Hooker’s VP International Sales], and we made a point to get to know a lot of people walking the halls of the NEC. We took the time to sit down and talk to people – it’s amazing how much you learn at markets from just listening. And we got a lot of great feedback from some pretty substantial (would-be) customers. We asked if there were any holes in what’s available, and discovered that there was a clear appetite for something new.
Has Hooker Furnishings sold into markets outside the US before?
We’ve sold into other places before, but this is the first time we’ve developed specific ranges and products for a market outside of the US.
At 100 years old, it’s tempting for a business like ours to just fall back on a mindset of ‘we do things this way’, and just start selling as much as we can to the rest of the world –and yes, you can get a quick hit, but it hasn’t proven sustainable. If we figure it out, having a UK business – and, after that, the rest of Europe – is more sustainable.
What can JFS visitors expect to see from you at the show?
We’re leading with downstairs, because it’s very much the focus in UK households. We’re unveiling five ranges with a Modern Country aesthetic, encompassing dining, occasional furniture and custom upholstery.
It’s the first step towards establishing our ‘collected living’ concept in the UK.

How have you approached product development?
We’ve been through a lot of upheaval in our 100-year history, but, through it all, we’ve seen our retail partners as key to our existence. They’re at the front end of product development, so we communicate a lot on shapes, finishes, delivery schedules … it’s all about relationships and product.
The difference in feel between US and UK product might not be as big as you’d think, but if you don’t address the differences you have 0% chance of being successful. So, we ask retailers what their customers want, what they need from us, and how our offer can dovetail into their available space.
We have some really talented merchandisers in place –we got lucky on the talent. People are everything.
How important is the UK marketplace for Hooker Furnishings?
We see significant potential in the UK marketplace, if approached strategically. If we’re successful in the UK –and I firmly believe there’s a place for us – it’s going to be very meaningful to us.
In the US, we’ve had two rough years recently, with high interest rates, and low demand for furnishings in the wake of the Covid boom. But things will get better – and, while they do, we’re putting everything we know into this expansion. We’re pulling out all the stops.
When I visited Birmingham last January, it hit me what an opportunity there was. And we should’ve taken that opportunity 10 years ago. But we’ve finally got it figured out, we’ve invested in all the right places, and we’re going to make it work for the long term.

Did you know that 10 million hectares of forest are lost every year due to industries like furniture production? This staggering loss of natural resources is one of the driving forces behind the furniture industry’s shift toward sustainability. Embracing the principles of the circular economy, manufacturers are rethinking how they design, produce, and dispose of furniture—taking responsibility for the environment and aiming to preserve natural resources for future generations.

Historically, furniture manufacturing followed a linear “take-makedispose” model, leading to deforestation, resource depletion, and increased waste. However, this pattern is changing.
The circular economy offers a solution by reimagining product lifecycles. Instead of a linear model, it focuses on keeping products and materials in use for as long as possible through design for durability, repairability, and recyclability. Manufacturers are increasingly adopting eco-friendly materials, such as recycled plastics, reclaimed wood, and organic fabrics like cotton and wool. These materials reduce the demand for virgin resources and help decrease the amount of waste sent to landfills. Additionally, sustainable furniture focuses on reducing energy consumption during production, employing energy-efficient processes and low-emission finishes that minimise harmful chemical exposure in both manufacturing environments and consumers’ homes.
A prime example of circular principles in action is the use of modular design in furniture. Modular furniture is adaptable, allowing consumers to reconfigure or extend their items as needed. This design reduces the need for constant replacements and minimises waste. It also opens the door for manufacturers to focus on creating long-lasting pieces, which will remain useful and relevant for years to come.
Sustainable furniture is not just good for the planet; it’s also a smart economic choice. In the long run, companies that invest in sustainability also position themselves for greater market resilience, as consumers increasingly favour brands that align with their environmental values.
Moreover, the transition to sustainable furniture helps stimulate innovation. Manufacturers are pushed to
develop new materials, refine production techniques, and explore alternative models of consumption, such as furniture leasing or take-back schemes. These innovative approaches not only boost business but also lead to more sustainable and efficient systems.
The furniture industry’s environmental footprint is undeniable, but the transition to sustainable practices and the circular economy offers a way forward. By designing products with the full lifecycle in mind, embracing sustainable materials, and adopting energyefficient manufacturing processes, the industry can significantly reduce its negative impact. The benefits of sustainable furniture are far-reaching, extending beyond environmental conservation to economic growth and improved social well-being.
The journey towards a circular economy and sustainable furniture is not just a trend; it’s a necessary shift for the future. While challenges remain, the potential for positive change is within reach. Through collaboration between businesses, governments, and consumers, we can create a resilient, sustainable future that benefits both people and the planet.
One notable example of this commitment is Hartman’s innovative Return. Recycle. 360° product lifecycle scheme. This initiative encompasses the entire lifecycle of their products, aiming to help consumers maximise the lifespan and enjoyment of their garden furniture. When the time comes to part with their preloved items, Hartman assists customers in disposing of them responsibly and sustainably.
Similarly, Actona Group is making sustainability a priority. Recognising climate change as one of the greatest challenges of our time, Actona Group has integrated sustainable targets alongside financial objectives in their 2021-2025 strategy. Their commitment to minimising environmental impact is evident across the organisation, with 12 concrete areas of focus aligned with three of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Actona Group acknowledges the need for skilled partners to succeed in this endeavour and is dedicated to being part of the solution.
Through such initiatives, both Hartman and Actona Group demonstrate how the furniture industry can lead the way in embracing sustainability and the circular economy, offering consumers products that are both environmentally responsible and of high quality.
On behalf of January Furniture Show, Simone Ward, Content & Community Manager.
