The industry tradition of gathering at the NEC every January to celebrate all that’s good and positive about furniture is alive and well.
This year’s show has new features – new hall identities and new signage to make navigation around the halls easier. But the biggest change you will notice is the contactless Poken system, a system which allows visitors and exhibitors to communicate, even when a stand is busy.
Each stand has a Poken Touchpoint and by simply tapping your visitor badge against it you can register your interest and the pre-loaded exhibitor information will be emailed to you. No need to carry heavy brochures any more! You will see Poken information points at the entrance to each hall.
The show is, of course, all about what is new in furniture and interiors. The 500 exhibitors in five halls have new collections, new range extensions, new innovations and new trends to show you – and there are ‘show-stoppers’ in every hall.
We all know that good business is a shared process and runs on shared values right through the supply chain – from the raw materials to the consumer’s door and beyond. We are no different, and rely on a great team of associated service providers to help us open the doors to the trade every year. È ancora viva la tradizione di ritrovarsi ogni gennaio presso NEC per celebrare tutto il bello e il positivo dell’industria del mobile.
La fiera di quest’anno presenta nuove caratteristiche: nuove disposizioni e nuova segnaletica per muoversi più facilmente tra i padiglioni espositivi. Tuttavia, il cambiamento più grande che noterete, sarà il sistema contactless Poken, che permetterà a visitatori ed espositori di comunicare anche quando uno stand è pieno di gente.
Ogni stand, infatti, avrà un Touchpoint Poken e, passando il badge su quest’ultimo, sarà possibile registrare il proprio interesse ricevendo, inoltre, via e-mail le informazioni dell’espositore caricate in precedenza. The Furniture Awards are back, giving the show’s best launches and their suppliers the recognition they deserve. Having selected their shortlist from a stronger-than-ever complement of entries, the judges are looking forward to selecting this year’s winners …
REWARDING GREATNESS
“Now an intrinsic part of the January Furniture Show, The Furniture Awards have become the ultimate celebration of furniture design across the whole industry,” says show director Theresa Raymond.
The awards, which were conceived in 2014 by Furniture News magazine in collaboration with the show’s organisers, aim to highlight the most commercial and creative developments in domestic furniture.
This year’s judging panel – chaired as always by awards co-ordinator Paul Farley – comprises: Malcolm Walker (director of buying, Furniture Village); Jacquie Benedukt (furniture buyer, Fenwick Colchester and Canterbury); Diana Celella (president-elect, SBID); and Debbie Watmore (bed, bedroom and cabinet buyer, AHF).
“This year’s panel has more buying experience than we’ve ever deployed,” says Paul, “so I’m certain the 2018 winners will truly reflect the cream of the UK furnishing crop.”
Lending additional weight to this year’s competition is the BFM trade association. MD Jackie Bazeley comments: “Given today’s economic realities, the awards’ focus on recognising commercialism means they are more relevant to our industry than ever.”
The Furniture Awards highlight the show’s supply champions in four categories – Bedroom, Living, Dining and Decor. The shortlisted entries are inspected on site, before the winners are revealed on the first day of the show.
DIANA CELELLA
Returning judge Diana is an international award-winning interior designer, and the director of Drawing Room Interiors. Diana is also president-elect of the Society of British and International Designers (SBID), and will take up the position of president at the end of January. She designs extensively for the commercial sector, specialising in healthcare projects, and is recognised as an expert in healthcare sector design.
MALCOLM WALKER
Furniture Village’s director of buying returns to the panel for a third year. For the last 45 years, Malcolm’s career has revolved around retail, chiefly in the home furnishing market. He is currently responsible for the product direction and sourcing of suppliers, product categories, styles and price architecture for Furniture Village, in addition to ensuring the most commercial layout, presentation and relativity of its store showrooms.
JACQUIE BENEDUKT
New judge Jacquie is the furniture buyer for the Colchester and Canterbury branches of family-owned department store, Fenwick. Jacquie has a strong background in furniture selling, buying and management, having joined Fenwick in 1996 after working for Queensway, ELS and House of Fraser.
DEBBIE WATMORE
Debbie, another new judge, started working for Anglia Home Furnishings (AHF) 14 years ago as a sales assistant, and after nine months was appointed as a trainee bed buyer. Today, she is an experienced retail merchandising expert, and is responsible for all beds, bedroom and cabinet furniture buying at AHF, the largest employee co-operative in the UK.

Founded in 1955, Nolte Möbel is a German manufacturer of wardrobes and bedroom furniture. Able to produce commercial lines in bulk, as well as bespoke processes when required, Nolte’s success is based on the continuous development of innovative yet functional designs – and its winning bedroom system distils a huge selection of cabinets and finish options into one easy-tounderstand format.
“In concept me, Nolte have completely simplified the German bedroom furniture concept,” said the judges. Cottonsafe Natural Mattress was Highly Commended, for Dartmoor.
Established in 1968, and acquired by the Belfield Group last year, Tetrad is known globally for its highquality upholstery. Coupling enduring hardwood frames with a variety of suspension options, in fabric or leather, Tetrad’s portfolio is unique, sometimes quirky, and quintessentially British in flavour.
“Relaxed glamour is really marketable right now, and this is eminently fashionable,” said the judges.

DECOR CATEGORY
Established in 1988, Bentley Designs has grown to be one of the leading UK suppliers of quality wooden dining, lounge and bedroom cabinet furniture. Its complete range comprises four individual collections, delivered from a strong manufacturing base in Vietnam via one of the industry’s strongest logistical operations.
The judges said: “From its design and finish to marketing and selling, the whole range has been comprehensively thought through.”

Derbyshire-based rug specialist Flair Rugs was established in 1984, and has become a leading supplier of rugs to the interiors and flooring sectors. The company supplies over 1800 rug sizes and styles in a wide selection of designs, colours and sizes. “It’s on-trend, edgy and affordable, offering value-price fashion,” said the judges.

Moving away from commercial to exclusive designs, Heritage Furniture’s designers have kept a close eye on growing trends, customer feedback and items that are proving popular with the market. With all this data in hand, its dedicated team was tasked with pushing the boundaries to give the market a much-needed fresh approach.
With four new ranges being launched at the show, Heritage is optimistic that the market will respond well. The new ranges include oak living and dining range Skien, an elegant mid-century-inspired range, which is characterised by its clean lines, unfussy detail and craftsmanship.
Next is Hartuka oak bedroom, a Scandinavian-influenced modern range which features clever recessed handles on its doors and drawers.
Colmar, a grey lime-washed oak living, dining and bedroom range, offers French-inspired elegance and sophistication. The lime-washed finish gives it a chic appearance that fits both traditional and modern settings.
Finally, Heritage is introducing Sedona Painted bedroom, a Shaker-inspired lifestyle hybrid that fuses country aesthetics with a modern sage green finish. Heritage has tested these new ranges with select retailers and customers, and says that the feedback has been extremely positive.
Heritage Furniture has confidence in these ranges, and as such has invested in ample stock for the show – all of which is housed in a 100,000ft2 distribution centre in Lancashire near the M6, which offers easy delivery to the entirety of the UK. Retailers will be able to buy these new ranges at the show with a promise of immediate delivery straight to their outlets.
Furthermore, the company’s large warehouse removes the need for retailers to carry large amounts of stock. This allows retailers to display multiple ranges, and keep their shopfloor looking fresh and appealing all year round.
