“Whether you lean towards tradition or technology, we’re looking at both sides of the coin Please, take a seat. Given the choice, do you opt for a unique handcrafted chair that tells a story of traditional craft and woodworking skill – or a mass-produced, mixed-media model that was manufactured overseas, but comes at a fraction of the cost? Of course, it all comes down to personal preference, but it says a lot about our sector that you can still find furniture from right across the spectrum, from one-man bands to global giants (and everything in between). Whether you lean towards tradition or technology, we’re looking at both sides of the coin in this month’s issue, with examples of how today’s furnituremakers are bridging the gap between old and new to fulfil consumer appetites while acknowledging commercial realities. On p52 you’ll see the direction of industrial design reflected in this year’s Design Guild Mark recipients, and on p42 there’s news from Inspiring Makers, a conference which aims to inspire future generations of craftspeople (and it’s worth noting that if you’re on the lookout for fresh talent, the New Designers showcase returns to Islington’s Business Design Centre from 9-12th this month). From p58 you’ll find our annual Best of British feature, with updates from Breasley, Meridian Upholstery and La-Z-Boy, which reveal the blend of craft and automation taking place in our sector. As ufurnish.com’s Deirdre Mc Gettrick, who introduces the feature, suggests: “Celebrating British-made furniture is about more than promoting products – it’s about honouring a tradition of creativity, skill and resilience.” And the discussion takes even more progressive turns. In our lead story on p10, Made Smarter’s Will Kinghorn explains how furnituremakers across the UK can now access Government-funded support to adopt new digital skills and tools, and the productivity gains that come with them. Interior designer Juliette Thomas shares her innovative, yet controversial take on utilising AI in the furniture design process (p22), while Duncan Fergusson, the founder of this month’s cover star Sci-Net, explains what’s next for furniture retail (p16). Also in this month’s issue, you’ll find the second instalment of our Manchester Furniture Show preview coverage (from p44). There may still be time to attend (register at https://bit.ly/43wtEno) – we hope to see you there, on stand A36 or out on the show floor! Elsewhere, meet the people behind 100% Comfort (p14), MattressNextDay (p20) and Mammoth (p28), discover Gallery Direct’s first exclusive retailer (p18), and enjoy a snapshot of The Furniture Makers’ Company’s master’s installation ceremony at Mansion House (p50). In our Opinion section from p80, Gordon Hecht suggests how to make your store more efficient, Steve Pickering evaluates staff happiness, James Twine looks at an employment landscape without ‘fire & rehire’, Victoria Robinson explains why robust T&Cs matter, and John Hubbard explores how to best communicate sustainability. In closing, I should also note that there’s been a lot going on behind the scenes here at Furniture News. Last month, Lewis Business Media acquired the title from its founder and publisher Nigel Gearing, bolstering an already-strong portfolio of leading B2B brands. Please join Sam Horscroft and I in welcoming the newest members of our team! Next month, discover the winners of this year’s Readers’ Choice Awards and much more besides. Until then … please, take a seat.

Think smarter, make better Furniture manufacturing SMEs right across England can now benefit from Made Smarter’s expertise
Thanks to new Government funding, Made Smarter, the industrial digitalisation movement created to help drive manufacturing productivity and growth among SMEs, can now be accessed by furniture businesses across England. The move promises to boost digital skills in the sector, bringing businesses and R&D together to develop new technology, and helping makers embrace new digital tools – explains Will Kinghorn, the automation and robotics specialist at Made Smarter Adoption in the North West …
Will Kinghorn
What is Made Smarter? The Made Smarter Adoption programme is an initiative backed by the UK Government that supports manufacturers to adopt digital technologies to boost productivity, drive innovation, and create sustainable growth. The programme helps SME manufacturers adopt technologies through a suite of support, including digital transformation workshops to create a digital roadmap, impartial and expert technology advice, leadership and skills training, and grant funding for digital internships and technology projects. Since launching in the North West in 2019, the programme has expanded across England – including the South East, South West, East of England and London earlier this year, after the Government’s £16m investment into the programme.
“Establishing genuine buyin for digital transformation meant ensuring support was quick, simple, and high impact
How do our manufacturers’ technological capabilities compare to those in other developed nations? A decade ago, UK manufacturing was struggling post-financial crisis, with labour productivity 20% lower than in the US, France and Germany, largely due to underinvestment in advanced technologies and continued reliance on low-skill labour. To address this, the UK Government launched its Industrial Strategy in 2017, aiming to boost

What are the barriers preventing furniture manufacturers, in particular, from embracing automation and technology? The barriers are a mix of financial constraints, skill shortages, cultural resistance, and tech suitability issues – particularly acute due to the bespoke, craftsmanshipfocused nature of UK furniture manufacturing.
The new bespoke Customer Management System in action at Starlight Bedrooms
What different types of technology might be applicable? Software systems are the most widely adopted technology in the sector, providing a range of functions that help manage business operations. These include tools for order management, stock control and production planning, which streamline processes and improve efficiency. Computer-aided design (CAD) software has been standard for many years, but recent advances in design automation now allow manufacturers to create bespoke designs based on a house style. This not only speeds up the design process but also simplifies production. On the shop floor, automation is increasingly popular. Robots are being introduced for tasks like machine tending, polishing, sanding and spraying – making them a practical and accessible solution for repetitive or physically demanding work. It’s also valuable to consider automating support tasks, especially those that currently require skilled operators. Activities such as packing, palletising, labelling and kitting are all well-suited to automation and can free up skilled staff for higher-value tasks. Artificial intelligence (AI) is also gaining traction, often in ways that are more accessible than expected. Free-to-use AI tools can assist with marketing content creation and search engine optimisation (SEO). In many cases, AI capabilities are already embedded in the software businesses use, either as part of a subscription or through add-on plugins. These tools

buy-in for digital transformation meant ensuring support was quick, simple, and high impact. This meant creating a set of short, focused interventions to help time-poor SME leaders. It also meant showing, rather than just telling, people how technology adoption is done properly, and simplifying the jargon around terms like ‘Industry 4.0’ to ensure it was attractive and accessible to businesses of all sizes and digital maturity. Crucially, it established the core principle that people are at the centre of adoption, and technologies are valuable tools.
can support sales forecasting, production planning and inventory management – helping companies make smarter, data-driven decisions. The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is also making a significant impact in forward-thinking furniture factories. By connecting machines to sensors and cloud-based monitoring systems, manufacturers can gain real-time insights into machine performance, maintenance needs, and overall equipment effectiveness. This kind of machine monitoring helps reduce unplanned downtime, optimise productivity, and extend equipment life through predictive maintenance. Additionally, IIoT systems can track energy consumption at a granular level, enabling businesses to identify energy-intensive processes and implement strategies to cut costs and reduce their carbon footprint – supporting both profitability and sustainability goals. On top of that, Augmented Reality (AR) is transforming the customer experience, particularly in bespoke and high-end furniture retail. With AR-enabled apps, customers can now use their smartphones or tablets to visualise products in their own space, helping them see exactly how a sofa, table or cabinet will look and fit in their room before committing to a purchase. This interactive experience not only boosts customer confidence and satisfaction but can also reduce returns and improve conversion rates – especially in online or hybrid sales environments. For manufacturers, offering AR capabilities adds a modern, value-added service that strengthens brand appeal and opens new sales opportunities. Other than providing funding, how does Made Smarter help clients onboard new technology? Listening, learning, and adapting to the needs of manufacturers has ensured the programme remains relevant and practical, six years on from its launch. It has established a robust delivery model which starts by taking companies through a fully-funded digital transformation workshop. The process involves a technology adoption specialist supported by the organisational workforce development team working with the business to identify the most effective technologies to overcome operational challenges and skills gaps. The result is a digital strategy roadmap containing a series of highimpact recommendations for the journey forward. ››

Goods and Furniture Manufacturing Sector). Can you give us some examples of work
you’ve done with businesses in the home furniture industry? Weaver Dane, a bespoke kitchen and bedroom furniture manufacturer in Northwich, has been supported by Made Smarter to invest in data and systems integration technologies. Paul Dodd, MD at Weaver Dane, says: “Digital transformation and investing in new technologies can be challenging, but from the very first meeting, Made Smarter made it simple. They helped us identify future objectives and create a digital roadmap. We were then able to access grant funding to fast-track our investment in a 3D furniture design solution by 18 months. “This technology has made us more efficient and productive, and no doubt will result in being more profitable. It has also allowed us to venture into new locations, which in turn will create new jobs, and our existing workforce has definitely been upskilled.” Meanwhile, Crystal Doors, a Rochdale-based manufacturer of bespoke, vinyl-wrapped furniture, tapped into Made Smarter’s digital technology internship programme to implement a network of sensors that will give the business full visualisation to gain insights into how its machines are performing and identify potential efficiencies. This helped the business achieve carbon neutrality in 2022. How do you overcome the objection that embracing technology might mean fewer jobs? Every project supported by Made Smarter has led to job growth – because adopting technology drives business expansion. While it’s true that technology can change the nature of some roles, it typically replaces repetitive, low-value tasks, not people. In fact, automation often creates opportunities for employees to move into more technical, creative, or customer-focused roles. For example, implementing software to manage orders can eliminate the need for staff to manually write out multiple copies of each order. Instead, that time can be redirected to engaging with customers, generating new business, or improving service.
using their skills more effectively. What’s the most rewarding part of your work? People are at the heart of every business – and that’s where real transformation begins. Many companies come to us unsure of where to start with technology. They know they need to make a change, but the path forward isn’t always clear. That’s where support and guidance make all the difference. By demystifying digital tools and showing how they can add value, we help businesses become more competitive, sustainable and resilient. There’s no greater satisfaction than seeing the impact technology has, whether it’s in the form of growth, productivity, or higher morale among staff. In many cases, employees who were once resistant to new technology become its strongest advocates once they see the benefits firsthand. These shifts don’t just change processes, they change mindsets, opening up new possibilities for both individuals and the business as a whole. Who might be eligible for funding, and how can they find out more? The programme is open to manufacturing and engineering SMEs with 250 employees or fewer and an annual turnover of £50m or less, who are looking to overcome common challenges like productivity, decarbonisation and competition through the adoption of digital technologies. What would you say to anyone ‘on the fence’ about whether to apply? It’s absolutely worth exploring, especially because it is fully funded. The Made Smarter process is designed to be quick and straightforward. We understand that manufacturers can’t afford to waste a minute. With just two to three hours of your time, you’ll receive a tailored digital roadmap for your business, outlining clear, practical steps to help you get started. From there, it’s entirely up to you how you move forward. You’ll have access to a dedicated technology advisor and a workforce development specialist, who are there to talk through your options and support you at every stage of your journey.

Becca: I’m very proud of our product development, working to deliver solutions for our customers such as the Seriously Comfortable brand. It’s a solution-based, premium brand of toppers and pillows, all proven to eliminate pressure hot spots and reduce heat build-up by 50% – a real winner with our customers too. What’s your favourite 100% Comfort product? Kleber: The Seriously Comfortable Revolution mattress topper is hands down my favourite. It’s unique, luxurious, full of clever features, and has for clean, minimal design and from beauty, I learned how to move fast and build great online journeys. Before I knew it, bedding felt like a natural fit. Helen: Being a much smaller company and therefore a smaller team, there is more exposure to other business areas such as digital marketing and finance. We work alongside each other to deliver projects and everyone’s opinion is heard and considered. We all work towards the best outcome for the business and draw on each other’s strengths to deliver. Becca: Having worked within big retailers Dreams and Furniture Village, then buying group AIS (Associate Independent Stores) I saw a startup as a great opportunity for an exciting and different challenge, especially as it was run by a team I’ve enjoyed working with before. Within a smaller team, you have more exposure to all areas of the business and work closely together to deliver. Working this way also allows strong relationship building, both internally and alongside our retail and supplier partners. What are you most proud of achieving there? Kleber: What I’m most proud of is the team. They’re incredibly talented, always pushing to do more, and are genuinely a joy to work with. In terms of achievements, we launched a digital business of

The super-cool fabric is a life saver for night sweats, and it stays cool through the night, but it’s also perfect for the sofa, the car, and on holiday too! Becca: Oooh, that’s a tricky one! Do I have to just choose one?! I was sleeping on the brand-new Harrison Spinks Wool & Microspring pillow as part of our R&D sleep trials, and loved it so much I haven’t switched back! I get warm at night, so the wool helps regulate my temperature, and the spring unit means I get a great level of support – it’s like a luxury mattress for my head! They’ve had a great reaction following the recent launch. We worked with the team at Harrisons to ensure the pillows complement the beds and work as a great AOV driver and add-on for retailers. What’s next? And what excites you most about the brand’s direction? Kleber: We continue to grow, with a clear focus on improving our services and delivering great value, top-quality products. consumer expectations and complex supply chains mean that traditional retail models must be reimagined. At Sci-Net, we believe the future of furniture retail hinges on fast-forward fulfilment, enabled by agile, integrated technology solutions – and that’s precisely what our ERP>Retail platform delivers. The challenge – complexity meets customer demand Furniture retail is inherently complex. With a vast range of SKUs, customisation options, multi-location inventories and big-ticket purchases requiring financing and delivery co-ordination, managing these variables manually or with disconnected systems can be costly and error-prone. Customers today expect seamless, transparent service with timely updates on order status, flexible payment options and reliable delivery windows. Falling short risks losing customer trust and market share. The Sci-Net ERP>Retail advantage Built within Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and certified by Microsoft, ERP>Retail is a purposebuilt, end-to-end ERP solution tailored specifically for furniture and flooring retailers. It is designed to fasttrack fulfilment processes while ensuring accuracy, traceability and a superior customer experience. Key to this is the platform’s seamless integration across all touchpoints – from product configuration and showroom sales to warehouse management, supplier ordering, finance, and delivery scheduling. Whether selling from stock or managing back-toback supplier orders, ERP>Retail empowers retailers to keep their customers informed throughout the journey with automated SMS and email notifications. This transparency builds trust and reduces service queries, freeing staff to focus on adding value. Driving operational efficiency with automation ERP>Retail harnesses the power of automation and integration to reduce manual tasks and accelerate decision-making. Barcoded warehouse management streamlines picking and packing, while container and landed cost management optimise supply chain
and reporting that provide insight into sales trends, inventory levels and channel performance, enabling proactive management and continuous improvement. Empowering retailers to thrive in a multichannel world The modern furniture retailer must excel across multiple sales channels – showroom, ecommerce, marketplaces and trade. ERP>Retail’s ecommerce integration framework allows for consistent pricing, promotions, and stock visibility across channels, delivering a true omnichannel experience. Moreover, the platform’s configurator and option management features cater to the bespoke nature of furniture retail, enabling sales teams to upsell and tailor products to customer preferences with ease. historical designs, materials and current trends, AI allows us to create bespoke, one-of-a-kind pieces that are uniquely tailored to each client. But although AI gives us stunning furniture designs, it’s only the easy start of the process. Transforming these unique designs into reality is what takes time and skill. The process still involves detailed shop drawings, 3D renders, materials and finishes to be approved, and a lot of experience to know what will and won’t work – backed up by highly skilled manufacturers that need to think differently. And there’s an ethical debate at the heart of this approach. As the use of AI in design grows, an ongoing dilemma looms over the industry – does AI design constitute theft? Critics argue that AI could infringe on intellectual property by drawing from existing designs without giving credit. At Juliette’s Interiors, we address this concern head-on. The designs we use are not in any way offered elsewhere, and since we have highly tailored what AI gives us, it’s impossible to (IP) infringe on anyone’s designs, registered or not. We’re only interested in what’s not available elsewhere. We have no interest in what’s already available and using AI gives us that. It’s also interesting to note that since these AI designs are difficult to produce, trying to copy what we do is a real challenge and mostly cost-prohibitive. Our AI tools are carefully trained to complement, not replace, the creative genius of our designers. Each design is a collaboration between technology and human skill, ensuring that the final product is both innovative and unique. We operate within ethical boundaries, respecting IP laws, and using AI purely as a means to push creative limits, rather than replicate existing work. AI has revolutionised many industries, including design, by providing tools that can generate stunning visuals and concepts with ease. However, it is essential to approach AI-generated content with transparency and integrity. When using AI to generate inspirational images for design purposes, it’s important to ensure that these visuals are presented as concepts, not final products. AI is a powerful tool for visualising ideas,
accurately translated into a finished piece that aligns with their expectations. This can be done by clearly communicating that the AI-generated images are conceptual and that the real design and production process will reflect their personal preferences and the highest standards of quality. By transparently presenting AI-generated images for their intended purpose – inspiration – and ensuring that your clients understand the difference between visualisations and the final bespoke pieces, you build trust. You can confidently assure clients that the final product will be well replicated, not only reflecting their vision but also incorporating your expertise and the skill of trusted, innovative manufacturers. It is also important to remember that AI tools are meant to enhance your work, not replace it. Use them as part of the design process to refine ideas, explore new materials, and present possibilities. However, always be clear about which images are real and which are conceptual, ensuring your clients understand and are confident that what is presented is not misleading or unattainable. This will ultimately reinforce the integrity of your business and the luxury experience you aim to offer. Our clients have been overwhelmingly positive about our use of AI. It enables us to present their vision quickly and accurately. HNW clients are very keen to have furniture that’s not just for the intended purpose but also, and importantly, unique and exclusive. This means being at the forefront of design innovation. The ability to personalise their pieces at a granular level, combined with the efficiency AI brings to the table, has given us results I could not have previously imagined. Clients are impressed to see how we use AI and blend it seamlessly with the artistry of our skilled designers to create furniture that’s not only functional, but visionary. As we look to the future, the role of AI in luxury furniture design is only set to grow. We believe that AI will continue to be the most powerful tool in the evolution of design, allowing for even more customised, sustainable and efficient production methods. By integrating new technologies, we are setting the stage for a new era of furniture design where personalisation, sustainability, and innovation intersect.

What’s the biggest myth about our industry? That we’re just selling stuff to fill rooms. To me, we’re offering choice and we’re selling lifestyles. In our case, that’s healthier lives. I genuinely believe that creating better products and educating people to change behaviours can help them lead longer, happier lives. Where do you see the industry going in the next 5-10 years? A greater globalisation of the industry. I think the UK will need to embrace what is on offer from elsewhere in the world. You can’t hold back the tide, and working against it is wasted energy. What question do you wish we’d asked? How would you have answered? Q: If you could fly a rocket up to the stratosphere and round the world to gain a better perspective on our planet and our role within it, where would it land, and who would be your co-pilot? A: It’s a secret.

In a league of its own Silentnight delivered a statement of support to the furniture industry at its inaugural Sleep Great, Britain event in the centre of Manchester this spring, showcasing its latest investment plans in brand, product and retail partnerships.
Hosted within Manchester’s National Football Museum, the event majored on the importance of ‘Winning Together’, bringing together retailers and hospitality partners from across the UK to unveil Silentnight’s latest product ranges, insights and marketing investments, all designed to drive in-store growth and hospitality guest satisfaction. Keynote speeches from Tracey Bamber, Silentnight’s chief executive, alongside Ian Lambert, the business’ CMO, outlined the company’s research findings and investments in supporting retailers across Britain. The business’ research shows that over 60% of consumers now rank mental health and sleep as their top health priority, with mattress replacement cycles continuing to shorten. Tracey also outlined how Silentnight’s strong brand equity is delivering commercial value for retailers, and leading competing brands in consumer trust scores. The event was used to showcase how brand
trust and familiarity have become key conversion drivers. Retailers working with Silentnight benefit from deep investment in tools to boost in-store sales which includes dedicated PoS displays, visual merchandising and tailored marketing materials. Ian, who organised the event, says: “We’re seeing more and more people start to realise the importance of sleep for their overall health and wellbeing and this shift presents a huge opportunity for retail. ‘Sleep Great, Britain’ was our way of saying – we’re in this together. We’re investing in the tools, products and campaigns that will drive footfall, increase confidence and grow sales for our partners.” The event also marked the launch of two new mattress collections – UltraGel and Memory Cool – which have been designed to deliver with marketleading technology to enhance comfort and tailored support. The UltraGel collection features a gel-infused comfort layer that offers advanced pressure relief and ease of movement. The range also comprises two cool-to-touch mattresses, designed to provide an

The showcase promises to be closely geared to market needs, international and packed with inspiration, “strengthening the trade fair’s profile as the focused B2B platform for the consumer-oriented interior design market”. “Our central theme, World of Interiors, sums up what the reconceptualised imm cologne stands for – it brings the entire spectrum of home interiors together at a single event. The trade fair reflects the latest developments, drives trends and serves as a central marketplace, making it the leading business event for the consumer-oriented furniture industry,” says Bernd Sanden, imm cologne’s director. The new central theme encompasses the full array of high-demand, market-ready products – from entry-level price points to lifestyle furniture, from high-volume vendors to established brands, says Koelnmesse: “The trade fair provides guidance and orientation for decision-makers from the industry and the retail and wholesale sector – interior professionals who want to understand the trends that will define interior design, the products that will captivate purchasers worldwide, and how consumer needs are changing will find well-founded insights and marketoriented inspiration at imm cologne. “As a clearly focused B2B event, imm cologne is the ideal platform for initiating strategic exchanges of ideas and sustainable business relationships. Ireland’s industry takes centre stage The countdown is on for one of the most important dates in the furniture industry calendar – the Irish Furniture and Homewares Show (IFHS), which returns to the National Indoor Arena, Dublin from 24–26th August.
“Whether you’re a retailer, wholesaler or manufacturer, this is the must-attend trade event of the year,” says the show’s organiser. “And while IFHS continues to be a critical platform for new product launches, sourcing and networking, what truly sets it apart is its dedication to recognising and rewarding achievement – and this year, the Furniture and Homeware Awards take centre stage.” Entries are now open to all IFHS exhibitors for the 2025 show awards, which aim to spotlight the show’s most innovative and impactful participants. The awards will be judged by architect and TV personality Amanda Bone, who boasts a wealth of design expertise and a critical eye for innovation, functionality and sustainability. At the event, Amanda will be tasked with selecting outstanding products and initiatives that not only demonstrate excellence in design but also deliver commercial impact and ethical value. Past winners know just how meaningful this recognition can be. Graham Carberry, national sales manager at Sealy UK and Ireland, comments: “Here at Sealy, we were so proud to be recognised for what we do, as our mattresses really are unique and different. To receive the IFHS award for Best New Global Product with our Posturepedic Elevate Ultra Plush mattress was testament to what we’re doing – it’s getting recognised in the best possible way.”
“IFHS is all about connection, creativity and community
Christina Byrne, director, Cófra echoes this sentiment: “It can be so daunting bringing a new product to market. It takes a lot of belief, courage and investment. To have our product stand out at IFHS among such a rich variety of exhibitors, and to be acknowledged with this award – especially from an industry leader like Amanda – gives us the confidence that there is great value in what we are doing, and fuels our determination to keep going.” In addition to the product awards, Amanda will select the Best Show Stand, recognising exceptional visual merchandising, creativity, and visitor engagement. This award is an incentive for exhibitors to showcase their brand experience as powerfully as their products. And it is not just the judges who get a say. Attendees will vote when registering for the show, choosing their Best Supplier and Best Sales Representative. These people’s choice awards highlight the value of strong relationships and outstanding service – and give buyers a chance to celebrate those who go the extra mile. “The awards not only honour the best in design and innovation, but also shine a light on the people and partnerships that power this industry,” says the show organiser. “They’re a reflection of what IFHS is all about – connection, creativity and community.” With many of Ireland’s top brands, exclusive collections, and a vibrant network of professionals under one roof, IFHS promises to be a must-attend event for anyone working in and with Ireland’s furniture sector. “Whether you’re showcasing sustainable design, launching an international collection, or just seeking inspiration, this is your opportunity to be seen – and celebrated,” concludes the organiser. Reach out to the furniture supply chain The Furniture Component Expo 2026, taking place at the Telford International Centre on 11–12th March, is the UK’s definitive showcase for every facet of the furniture manufacturing industry.
Organised by the British Furniture Association (BFA), this event is purpose-built for companies supplying beds, mattresses, foam, machinery, and every conceivable component, including those essential to cabinetmaking such as glue, edgebanding, finishes and veneers. Here are five reasons suppliers should consider exhibiting at the Furniture Component Expo 2026: 1. Reach a targeted audience across the full supply chain “This is not just a component show, it’s a onestop-shop for the entire furniture sector,” says the BFA. “The expo attracts decision-makers from manufacturers of beds, mattresses, cabinets and upholstered furniture, all seeking the latest innovations in components, raw materials and machinery. Whether your business supplies advanced foam technology, state-of-the-art machinery, or specialist cabinet products like adhesives and decorative surfaces, you’ll find your audience here.”
“Join the companies driving the future of furniture manufacturing
2. Showcase products to industry leaders With over 70 exhibitors at the last edition, including headline names in foam, machinery, and cabinet components, the expo has proven itself as a meeting place for the industry’s innovators and buyers. Companies including Carpenter, Lectra and Prima Tooling have used the event to launch new products and connect with new clients. “Exhibiting puts your brand alongside the best and gives you a platform to demonstrate your latest solutions to a highly engaged audience,” says the BFA. 3. Network, collaborate, and generate leads “Face-to-face connection remains irreplaceable in building trust and closing deals,” the BFA explains. “The expo is praised for facilitating meaningful conversations that lead to real business, with many exhibitors reporting new supplier relationships and direct sales as a result of their presence. The event’s format encourages networking, collaboration and knowledgesharing, with a seminar theatre offering insights into
trends, technology and regulation, ensuring your team is at the forefront of industry developments.” 4. Expand reach in the cabinet sector The expo is actively seeking more cabinet-focused exhibitors, says the BFA: “If your company supplies glue, edgebanding, finishes, veneers, or related cabinet materials, this is a prime opportunity to showcase your products to furnituremakers eager for new solutions. The event’s growing reputation means your innovations will be seen by a broad spectrum of manufacturers, from bespoke cabinetmakers to largescale producers.” 5. Be part of a dynamic event “The expo is built by the industry, for the industry,” explains the BFA. “All profits are reinvested to support British furniture manufacturing through education, lobbying and events, so your participation helps strengthen the sector as a whole. With an 80% rebook rate from previous exhibitors and a continually expanding roster of first-time participants, the expo’s value and ROI are clear.” The show is open to: suppliers of bed and mattress components, foam and comfort technology; machinery and equipment manufacturers for furniture production; cabinet component specialists (glue, edgebanding, finishes, veneers etc); and providers of software, timber, fabrics, and other essential materials. “Join the companies driving the future of furniture manufacturing,” the BFA urges. “Book your stand at the Furniture Component Expo 2026 and position your business at the heart of the industry’s most influential gathering. Don’t miss the chance to connect, collaborate, and grow – under one roof, with the people who matter most.” For more information and to secure exhibition space, visit the show website. www.fcexpo.co.uk

PROPOSTE www.propostefair.it
The 32nd edition of Proposte took place at Villa Erba from 6-8th May, featuring 78 (30 Italian and 48 international) manufacturers of furnishing textiles, curtains, wallcoverings and trimmings, and welcoming visitors from all over the world to the Cernobbio exhibition centre. “The final outcome is undoubtedly positive,” states the show’s director, Massimo Mosiello. “Participation has been in line with previous editions and exhibitors have enthusiastically stressed the premium quality of the buyers visiting the show. “The fair international character has still
dominated the stage by featuring approximately 75% of participants, lots of them coming from the US and the UK, followed by France, Germany, Belgium and Spain. Notably, this year has marked the first significant participation of trade operators from Saudi Arabia.” The next edition of Proposte will take place on 5-7th May 2026 at Villa Erba. “The event has renewed its agreement with the venue for the 2026, 2027, and 2028 editions while confirming the strength and importance of this long-standing partnership,” Massimo concludes.
INSPIRING MAKERS www.artichoke.co.uk/inspiringmakers/
More than 100 people in the design and furnituremaking industry came together on 8th May at the Guildhall in Bath for Inspiring Makers. Hosted by Somerset-based luxury interiors brand Artichoke and The Furniture Makers’ Company, the conference, now in its fourth year, brought together leading voices and emerging talent from the South West and further afield. With the decline of the UK’s master furnituremakers
from 90,000 to 1000 over past 150 years, the not-forprofit event offers a unique platform to inspire future generations of craftspeople to promote hand skills and preserve the legacy of craft through the sharing of ideas, industry connection and the championing of making. The line-up of talks and panel discussions engaged the audience on topics such as the advent of AI, gender inclusion, diversity and sustainability, with speakers from Artichoke, Matthew Cox, Benchmark, The Building Crafts College, Woodland Heritage, Anti Copying in Design (ACID), Sylva Foundation and Ergochair. Bruce Hodgson, the founder and creative director of Artichoke, comments: “Artistry and technical skill at our level can take decades in the making, which is why it’s so important to encourage young people into the craft. Along with our other educational initiatives such as apprenticeships, Inspiring Makers helps to encourage, train and sustain the masters of the future. This year’s event was hugely inspiring and we are already looking forward to planning next year.” David Dewing, chairman of The Furniture Makers’ Company’s South West Region, adds: “Inspiring Makers has become a cornerstone of our regional activity, and we’re proud to help organise an event that plays such an important role in safeguarding the future of British craftsmanship.”

Buyers, suppliers and designers will also benefit from dedicated networking events worthy of the show’s reputation for socialising, including the Official MFS Show Party, the Women in Furniture Networking Brunch & Panel, and the Spritz Bar. Ravello
Founded in 1987, Maysons has grown into one of the UK’s leading trade-only bedroom furniture manufacturers, supplying independent stores and multi-site retailers with well-built ranges “that deliver on the shop floor and endure in the home”. Its product portfolio spans 28 distinctive ranges, each curated to speak to specific market segments – from aspirational first-time buyers to premium lifestyle consumers. “Collections like Naples White, Portofino and Catania have become synonymous with understated elegance, retail performance and lasting quality,” says Maysons. “But our promise goes far beyond product. At Maysons, we understand the full picture – presentation, margin, logistics, and the consumer journey. That’s why we provide more than furniture – we deliver retail-ready solutions.” This package includes: high-quality lifestyle photography for digital and in-store use; non-branded catalogues that protect showroom exclusivity; and PoS and merchandising tools to support confident, consistent selling. “And because everything we offer is readyassembled, you benefit from fewer returns, quicker lead times, and immediate impact on delivery – no assembly frustrations, no compromises,” promises Maysons.
“We operate from our West Midlands base with nationwide reach, supporting retailers with dependable delivery and ongoing account support. Our infrastructure is built for scalability, but our relationships are personal. Whether you’re refreshing a display or rolling out across multiple locations, Maysons is structured to respond with precision, consistency and care.” This summer, Maysons is exhibiting at the Manchester Furniture Show (stand C90) and INDX Furniture Show (at Cranmore Park from 27-28th August). “We warmly invite you to visit our stand at either (or both) events to experience our latest launches, refined finishes, and the full scope of our offer,” states the supplier. “See the detail up close, meet the team, and discover how Maysons can strengthen your showroom proposition. “In a crowded and volatile marketplace, Maysons remains a name you can build with – not just because our furniture looks good, but because our partnerships are built to last. “Maysons – British made, retail focused, designed for life, and built for business.” www.maysonsfurniture.com

The Design Guild Mark is a non-profit award programme that was established in 2008 by The Furniture Makers’ Company to raise the profile of British industrial design and recognise excellence in this discipline. Over time, the mark has grown from just Furniture to include categories for Interior Design Elements, and Lighting. “At a time when sustainability is a given, aesthetics, innovation of materials, and creativity have all been key factors in the success of the 16 submissions who received the coveted Design Guild Mark 2025,” states the Furniture Makers. “Additionally, one entrant received the accolade of the Jonathan Hindle Prize for an exceptional entry.” The presentation took place at KI’s new showroom during Clerkenwell Design Week, with a presentation by design leader Sebastian Conran, who has led his own product and brand development consultancy for many years. The key criteria upon which each entrant is assessed by a panel of judges includes: innovation – does the design demonstrate new and original thinking and problem solving/is it different/does it do something better?; function – is the design fit for purpose/does it work well and intuitively/ does it benefit the user and how?; form – is the design aesthetically appealing and its appearance appropriate/is it made well/does it incorporate innovative manufacturing materials and processes?; brand – does the design develop a brand’s position/ does it provide a competitive advantage or edge in any way?; and environment – does the design demonstrate a responsibility to progressing sustainable and circular practices/is the product designed and made for longevity of appeal and use? The Design Guild Mark is unique in that applicants are required to present their piece in person to the judging panel, to allow for a dialogue and any questions to take place. Alex Crofts, chairman of the Design Guild Mark, comments: “This is my inaugural year as chairman and the 19th year of the Design Guild Mark, a programme which relentlessly promotes UK design as a leading global creative force. Vintage lighting shines in-store Riverbank
JJ Vaillant has been importing vintage-style lighting for over 35 years. The business started out in the antiques trade, exporting to the US and Japan, but quickly found its niche wholesaling in the UK, and then exporting reprostyle products, before moving on to Art Deco figurines and Tiffanystyle table lamps.

“Today, these Art Deco figurine lamps still sell well,” states the business. “They are cast in resin, which is then either hand-painted or finished in a bronze colour, and complemented in most cases with a glass shade.” JJ Vaillant adds that it has been dealing with its principal supplier of Tiffany-style lamps for over 25 years, initially buying designs based on originals made popular by designer Louis Comfort Tiffany, before going on to design and make its own. Each shade is hand-made and may contain as many as 300 individually cut pieces of glass, which are then assembled like a jigsaw and soldered together. JJ Vaillant also offers the exclusive Riverbank range – which features pebble-shaped cabochons around the edge of the shade, and bullrush-shaped jewels. Local heroes Farmhouse, Harrison Spinks
By working with a plethora of British furniture businesses, the team at industry search and comparison website ufurnish. com has come to truly appreciate the qualities of products designed and made in the UK, writes founder and CEO, Deirdre Mc Gettrick … By Deirdre Mc Gettrick
As the founder and CEO of ufurnish.com, I get the great pleasure of working with so many amazing British furniture designers, manufacturers and retailers. It’s the part of my job I love the most! In an age where mass production and global supply chains dominate much of the consumer goods industry, British-made furniture stands out as a beacon of authenticity, quality and sustainable design. Rooted in centuries-old traditions while embracing innovation and contemporary aesthetics, the UK’s furnituremakers continue to shape the interiors of homes with a unique blend of craftsmanship and character. But celebrating British-made furniture is more than championing locality – it’s about recognising the people, processes and principles that set the industry apart and create a platform for its furniture success. Britain’s legacy of furniture craftsmanship The British Isles have long been known for their skilled artisans and master furnituremakers. From the elegant Georgian designs of the 18th Century to the clean lines of mid-century modern, British furniture has often reflected broader cultural shifts while maintaining a distinctive national style. This legacy persists in modern workshops across the country, from Yorkshire to Devon, and from the Cotswolds to the Scottish Highlands. You can’t talk about British furniture without mentioning historic names like Chippendale, Hepplewhite, and Morris. These pioneers established a foundation of design excellence that today’s furniture brands still draw inspiration from. Yet what distinguishes contemporary British furniture is its ability to evolve. Today’s
furnituremakers don’t merely reproduce the past – they reinterpret tradition for modern living, using ecofriendly materials, minimalist design, and even smart technology to meet the needs of today’s consumer. Local design – from concept to creation At the heart of British-made furniture is a commitment to local design. Unlike imported pieces that are often standardised and impersonal, British-designed furniture reflects the sensibilities of its environment and the originality of its creators. Design studios across the UK are known for blending form and function in elegant ways. Whether it’s a minimalist oak table inspired by the Yorkshire moors or an upholstered armchair echoing the charm of a Cornish cottage, British furniture design is deeply contextual. Local designers collaborate closely with artisans and material suppliers, ensuring that each piece is not only aesthetically pleasing but also practical and durable. Design institutions such as the Royal College of Art and Central Saint Martins in London continue to produce world-class talent who push the boundaries of what furniture can be. At the same time, smaller studios in places like Bristol, Brighton, and Edinburgh champion bespoke design and limited production, offering consumers furniture that is truly one of a kind. One initiative very close to my heart and driven by the amazing Barbara Chandler is Green Grads, an organisation which aims to identify, promote and enable a new generation of UK graduate eco-activists, linking them with furniture manufacturers, design practices, shops, galleries, the media/internet and the public at large.

Supporting local economies One of the key benefits of British-made furniture is that it supports local economies. Manufacturing furniture in the UK creates jobs not just in workshops but also in related industries like textiles, woodworking and metalworking. Many of these are SMEs that are integral to rural and regional communities. The UK’s manufacturing ecosystem includes both heritage manufacturers and innovative newcomers. Ercol has been making high-quality wood furniture since 1920, combining traditional woodworking with contemporary design. Meanwhile, Harrison Spinks proudly designs and handmakes world-leading beds and mattresses from its farm in Yorkshire and Innovation Centre of Excellence in Leeds. Another benefit is quality control. British manufacturers often prioritise precision, durability and finish, ensuring the furniture not only looks good, but stands the test of time. This attention to detail is particularly important in a world where fast furniture often ends up in landfill within a few years. Sustainability and ethics Sustainability is no longer a trend, it’s a necessity in today’s world, and consumers expect to see furniture manufacturers and retailers doing all they can in this area. British furnituremakers have been leading the way in ethical production, often exceeding the environmental and labour standards found in other countries. Many UK brands source FSC-certified wood, use low-VOC finishes, and minimise waste through lean production methods. Some go further, offering repair services or take-back schemes to ensure their products remain out of landfill. This commitment extends to social ethics as well. By keeping production local, British furnituremakers can ensure fair wages, safe working conditions, and opportunities for apprenticeships and training. It also means a lower carbon footprint, thanks to reduced transportation. British identity in the global market Branding plays a crucial role in how British-made furniture is perceived, both domestically and internationally. The Made in Britain label carries with it a reputation for quality, integrity and style. This branding is not just about geography – it encapsulates a way of working that values authenticity over imitation, and craftsmanship over convenience. Many British furniture brands capitalise on this reputation by emphasising their origins in marketing materials, product labelling, and even in the naming of furniture ranges. Local materials, regional dialects and British icons often inspire product names and descriptions, imbuing the furniture with a sense of place and narrative. ufurnish.com has been particularly focused on supporting British furniture brands and emphasising the importance of buying British. In a recent campaign with Harrison Spinks, our content team
manufacturing story, which exemplifies the success of their business over decades. Contemporary trends and innovations The British furniture industry is not only about tradition, it’s also about innovation. Technological advancements are playing a greater role in design and manufacturing. CNC machinery, laser cutting and digital modelling tools allow for greater precision and customisation than ever before. There is growing demand for modular and multifunctional furniture, catering to the needs of urban dwellers with limited space. British designers are responding with intelligent solutions such as foldaway desks, stackable stools and modular sofas that reflect the changing way people live and work. Moreover, the fusion of materials – wood with metal, ceramics, glass and recycled plastics – creates opportunities for new textures and structural possibilities, and collaborations between furnituremakers and artists or engineers are becoming more common, enriching the landscape. The future of British-made furniture As we move into a future defined by sustainability, digitalisation and localism, British-made furniture is uniquely positioned to thrive. It speaks to a growing consumer desire for products that are meaningful, responsibly made, and connected to place and people. To fully capitalise on this potential, however, the industry must continue to invest in skills training, apprenticeships, and digital infrastructure such as AI. Government support and public awareness campaigns can also play a role in encouraging consumers to choose British made over cheaper imports. Events like the London Design Festival, Clerkenwell Design Week and regional craft fairs help showcase the depth and diversity of British talent. Ultimately, celebrating British-made furniture is about more than promoting products – it’s about honouring a tradition of creativity, skill and resilience. It’s about understanding the value of things made with care – not just for how they look, but for how they last and what they represent. In every dovetail joint, hand-stitched cushion or naturally oiled finish lies a story of local pride and global excellence.

Leather La-Z-Boys now made in Britain
“Designed, built and handfinished in our Lancashire factory
The iconic recliner brand owns a factory in Colne, Lancashire, which produces its Made in Britain furniture ranges. But up until this year, the UKmanufactured collections have been limited to fabricupholstered products, with leather pieces being made overseas. La-Z-Boy UK has now added “premium quality” Italian leather upholstery options to its Baxter range, which is made in the UK factory, and plans to make more of the Made in Britain collections available in leather as well as fabric in the future, increasing the choice available to consumers who want to support UK manufacturing and buy British. All products made at the UK factory are handcrafted by a team of skilled craftspeople. Baxter, for example, offers people the chance to create a cosy cocoon with a combination of furniture to suit their style and space. The collection includes an armchair, loveseat, two-seater sofa, three-seater sofa and three-seater curved sofa, all available as static, manual recline or power recline models. At the moment Baxter is available in 11 different fabric finishes in a wide range of colourways, but the addition of leather will further widen the collection’s appeal. The Lancashire factory also produces all of La-ZBoy’s DFS-exclusive ranges. Since October last year, DFS has been selling a range of recliner sofas and chairs as part of an exclusive national partnership in the UK. With a network of more than 110 stores, DFS is the country’s leading upholstered furniture retailer, and the collaboration initially started with three ranges – Pittsburgh, Tamla and New Hollywood, all handcrafted in the UK. A fourth range, Carmel, was launched this year, and features innovative Cloud Zero technology, which promises to hold the user’s body in a weightless neutral position, distributing their weight

evenly. Carmel is a sophisticated, mid-century-style sofa, upholstered in Manolo, a soft and smooth fabric with a high sheen finish. At the moment, all four La-Z-Boy collections sold by DFS are only available in fabric, but leather upholstery options will be available from the retailer in the future. Tristan Pyke, MD of La-Z-Boy UK, says: “Our Made in Britain collections are already popular with consumers looking to buy local, support UK manufacturing and reduce their carbon footprint, as well as those who just love the styles, finishes and comfort-focused designs. “Being able to offer the choice of leatherupholstered chairs and sofas designed, built and hand-finished in our Lancashire factory is an exciting development. We hope it will encourage even more people to choose collections made by our talented team based in Colne.” La-Z-Boy UK is a member of Made in Britain, a movement designed to bring together the manufacturing community in the UK with a registered collective mark. Motion upholstery finds a new home
“It’s a very exciting time for Master Sofa Group’s growth, and investing in a UK showroom proves the company’s commitment to UK and Irish retailers,” says Mike, who says the decision to open a permanent UK showroom was made following a successful January Furniture Show, which helped the business gain significant traction in both markets. “The business is expanding, and we need to have a permanent presence – which the showroom will provide,” he continues. The business is now located in the former Parker Knoll showroom, a space covering 4000ft2. The company has invested £45,000 in the refurbishment, recruiting two members of staff to support company operations. “Natural light and good lighting are a good combination,” says Mike. “This showroom is perfect for our business – and what a location!” Master Sofa Group is a leader in the motion sofa/ technology market, with models incorporating cinema-style experiences with massage and audio features – and Mike says the showroom will provide a convenient UK destination for retailers wishing to enter this fast-growing sector. The Government has announced changes to the UK Flammability Regulations that will take effect from 30th October 2025. The most significant involves the removal from scope of certain baby and children’s products, intended to reduce the risk of babies and very young children being exposed to chemical flame retardants, and reflects the low risk of such products being exposed to ignition sources. While exempt from the UK Flammability Regulations, these products still need to meet the requirements of the General Product Safety Regulations, so some testing is still required. In addition, the European standard for Cot Mattresses specifies BS EN 597-1, which is a cigarette test on the final item. The other changes are the removal of the requirement for manufacturers to attach a relevant display label to new products and an extension to the time limit for enforcement authorities to begin legal proceedings in cases of non-compliance, from six to 12 months.

revenue. Often it’s up to you to get your share. Start by meeting with your vendor rep to cover and review the terms of your rebate and co-op programmes. Next, have your rep walk you through the steps needed to collect the allowances. Co-op often needs pre-approval and billing documentation. Filing for co-op takes time. You can increase efficiency by selecting advertising outlets that will file co-op for you. If you have to file for yourself, know that the 60 minutes you invest can pay off in thousands. That’s better than most doctors and some plumbers. Warehousing and storage: Start with this. No retailer should have a warehouse – that’s where you store merchandise waiting for someone to buy it. Every retailer should have a DC – that’s a place for goods to flow in and flow out, with just enough inventory on hand until the next possible shipping date. Next, clear out any dead merchandise. Total the cost of damage, shrink, lost bank interest, occupancy costs, and overparked, out-of-date goods. They lose about -3% of value every month, more than a third of their value in a year. Holding on to damaged or discontinued products is grossly inefficient. Convert that merchandise into cash – money you can invest into products that sell. Subscriptions, utilities, and other monthly costs: At home, you understand that a 10-day TV streaming
trial is a hook. You sign up for 10 days of Love Island, and a year later you’re still paying $11 a month for an unused icon on the big screen. Retail stores also may pay for subscriptions – services that you rarely or never use. Check your ledger and spend a half-day wiping them out. While you’re at it, revisit your internet provider contract. Are you getting the lowest possible rate? Is there a competing company offering a sweetheart deal for new subscribers? Same for cellphone service, window washing, vehicle maintenance, business insurance and uniform companies. Often, when those suppliers learn that you’re shopping around, they’ll offer you a bargain just to keep you in the fold. Take whatever monthly savings they give you, and multiply by 12. You will see that the annual saving can be substantial. Cutting costs is a solid start to cashflow efficiency. Each opportunity needs to be pursued assertively. They need to be balanced against the effect on your customers, employees, and bottom line. While it takes time, effort and patience, the net reward is that your business will be around for years to come. And that’s the best service you can offer. What comes after ‘fire & rehire’? The UK’s domestic furniture industry is no stranger to change – from supply chain fluctuations to shifting consumer demand. But now, a significant legislative shift is on the horizon that business owners cannot afford to ignore, writes James Twine, head of business services at law firm Wolferstans …
The controversial practice known as ‘fire & rehire’ is set to be heavily restricted under the forthcoming Employment Rights Bill, expected to become law as early as October. For businesses that rely on flexible staffing arrangements to stay competitive – such as changing shift patterns or locations at short notice – these changes could have far-reaching implications. Understanding what’s changing, when, and why, is critical to avoid legal mis-steps that could prove both costly and reputationally damaging.
By James Twine
What is fire & rehire? Fire & rehire refers to the practice of terminating an employee’s contract and offering re-employment on new, often less-favourable terms, when mutual agreement on changes cannot be reached. It has historically been used when negotiations stall – particularly around changes to hours, duties, or location. While not illegal, the practice has long attracted criticism. High-profile cases involving Tesco and P&O Ferries brought public and political attention to the tactic, highlighting its impact on workers and the reputational risk to businesses. What’s changing? The Employment Rights Bill currently before Parliament will make most uses of fire & rehire unlawful. The key change is this – it will no longer be legal to dismiss employees simply because they won’t accept a change to their contract. Any such dismissal will be automatically classed as unfair. There will be limited exceptions – for example, where a business is under serious financial pressure and can demonstrate that the changes are essential for survival. However, the threshold for this defence is high. Employers must show that no other reasonable alternatives existed and that proper consultation procedures were followed. For furniture manufacturers, retailers, and associated service providers – particularly those with seasonal peaks or fluctuating delivery models – this means rethinking how employment terms are managed. Requirements The legislation will also introduce a new statutory Code of Practice. While the code won’t be legally binding in itself, employment tribunals will take compliance with it into account. Businesses that fail to follow the code could see compensation payouts increased if a claim is brought. The code focuses on meaningful consultation. That means employers must genuinely try to reach agreement with staff before making contractual changes. A
transparent, two-way dialogue will be essential. This is particularly important for businesses using casual or flexible workers – such as showroom teams, warehouse staff, or delivery drivers – where shift patterns or locations may need to change regularly. These arrangements must now be approached through mutual agreement, not imposition. Can fire & rehire still be used? Only in very limited circumstances, where changes are necessary to avoid severe financial difficulties that threaten the survival of the business – for example, insolvency or critical losses. Even then, it must be clearly shown that all other options were exhausted first – such as cost-cutting, voluntary changes, and open consultation with staff or unions. This is not a loophole for routine restructuring. Any business attempting to use fire & rehire as a fallback for operational flexibility is likely to face legal challenge. What should businesses do now? With the law likely to come into force in just over a year, or possibly sooner, the message is clear – act now. Start by reviewing your employment contracts. Look at whether you have any clauses that allow for changes to hours, duties or work location. If these are vague or overly broad, they may not offer any protection under the new law. Then audit workforce planning. If your business relies on fluctuating staffing models – for example, responding to seasonal showroom footfall or delivery schedules – consider how you’ll build flexibility into operations without relying on fire & rehire. Next, update consultation procedures. Train HR and managers on how to engage staff in open discussions about contractual changes. Written records of consultation will be critical if disputes arise. And seek legal advice early – if you anticipate needing to vary terms in the near future, consider whether changes can be agreed before the law takes effect. This reform marks a significant shift in UK employment law. Furniture businesses that ignore it could face claims for unfair dismissal, financial penalties, and reputational damage. But those that act now – by improving communication, reviewing contracts, and building stronger workforce strategies – can turn compliance into a competitive advantage. The days of fire & rehire as a quick fix are ending. Proactive, fair, and legally compliant approaches to change will soon be the only viable option. www.wolferstans.com

Why having robust T&Cs matters Clear and comprehensive terms and conditions (T&Cs) are far more than a legal tick-box for businesses in the world of furniture retail and manufacturing – the bedrock of good business practice, they lay out expectations, manage risks, and ultimately protect your profitability, explains Victoria Robinson, partner in the corporate and commercial team at Buckles Law. By Victoria Robinson
Whether you’re a solo designer launching a new collection or a large-scale supplier with national reach, robust T&Cs ensure everyone knows where they stand, reducing the likelihood of disputes and ensuring you stay in control. Think of your T&Cs as the rulebook governing how you trade. They define the scope of the goods or services you offer, how and when you’ll be paid, your delivery terms, and what happens if things go wrong. Without them, you leave yourself exposed to misunderstandings, delays and financial loss. Tailored T&Cs give your customers clarity on what to expect and you the confidence that you’re operating on firm ground. For example, if you supply bespoke furniture pieces, your T&Cs can specify payment stages, lead times and even design approval processes to help manage client expectations. Well-drafted T&Cs also act as a shield. They limit your liability in case of problems, set out how disputes will be resolved and give you the right to terminate contracts that no longer make commercial sense. These safeguards protect you, whilst showing clients and partners that your business operates professionally, responsibly and with a clear sense of purpose. How T&Cs can impact your bottom line While protecting your business is key, your T&Cs can also be a powerful tool to unlock profitability. By aligning your terms with your business goals, you can improve cashflow, manage risk and strengthen client relationships. For example, tightening your payment terms by reducing the payment window can make a significant difference to cashflow. In the furniture sector, where materials cost and production timelines can be lengthy, including clauses for upfront deposits or staged payments ensures you aren’t left with the financial burden while a project progresses. Similarly, price adjustment clauses can be a gamechanger in a volatile market. With raw material costs and shipping charges fluctuating, your T&Cs can give you the flexibility to pass on increases, helping you maintain healthy margins. A logistics partner delivering your furniture could, for instance, include fuel surcharges in their contracts to avoid absorbing rising costs, and there’s no reason you can’t do the same when pricing your products or services. Limiting liability is another key consideration. By capping
liability to the value of a contract or excluding specific types of loss (such as indirect losses), you avoid the risk of a single issue wiping out your profits. And don’t underestimate the power of performance incentives. Offering discounts for early payment, volume rebates or loyalty rewards can encourage repeat business and stronger partnerships: offering a discounted annual subscription for maintenance services, rather than paying monthly, can boost cashflow and build customer loyalty. Lastly, including strategic termination clauses gives you the freedom to walk away from unprofitable contracts without being stuck in a financially draining relationship. Get the right expertise and do not cut corners While there are plenty of contract templates and online tools out there, when it comes to T&Cs, one size rarely fits all. Every business is unique, and your T&Cs should reflect the specific realities of your operations – whether that’s bespoke joinery, upholstery, design consultancy, or bulk furniture supply. Working with a commercial lawyer who understands your sector can help you craft terms that are legally sound, commercially sharp and aligned with your goals. A good lawyer will help you think through how your T&Cs support your customer journey, cashflow and long-term growth. A commercially astute lawyer will spot opportunities to protect your interests, suggest clauses you may not have considered and futureproof your agreements. Consider a review now Having written T&Cs isn’t a legal requirement in the UK, but you are still bound by consumer protection laws like the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and the Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977. Without your own tailored T&Cs, you risk being bound by your client’s terms – or worse, falling back on legal defaults that don’t reflect your best interests. Properly drafted T&Cs give you control, clarity and confidence. You should regard them as a business asset that can help you secure fairer deals, protect your margins and build lasting relationships. With the right advice and a bit of forward planning, your terms can become a competitive advantage. www.buckles-law.co.uk

PARTNER COMMENT OPINION 89
FURNITURE INDUSTRY RESEARCH ASSOCIATION
Communicating sustainability As sustainability becomes a key factor in decision-making across the industry, furniture manufacturers are increasingly being asked to provide technical data on the sustainability aspects of the products they supply. This may include data on material composition, embedded carbon, recycled content, and the recyclability of the product and its components at the end of life, explains John Hubbard, sustainability expert at the Furniture Industry Research Association … By John Hubbard
To use this data effectively for decision-making and reporting on sustainability impact, it is crucial that the information is presented clearly, without any misleading elements, and based on consistent calculations to allow for fair comparisons between products. Additionally, the information should be pragmatic – particularly when describing materials at the end of their lifecycle as recyclable or easy to disassemble. It is also important to note that gathering this information – especially if third-party verification is involved – can be costly for manufacturers. Therefore, such requests should only be made if the data will genuinely influence the decision-making process. When expressing the composition of a product in terms of recycled or recyclable content, two different calculation methods can be used that lead to significantly different results. These are based on either weight or volume. Using weight as a measurement places greater emphasis on wood and metal components, while volume gives more importance to less dense materials such as foam. Most assessments typically rely on the weight of the materials, and unless otherwise specified, weight is the preferred measure. While many companies have calculated their organisational carbon footprint, due to the variety of products supplied across the industry it can be challenging to directly translate that into productspecific carbon footprints. In reality, most of the carbon intensity associated with finished goods is concentrated in the materials and transportation. Therefore, understanding Scope 3 carbon emissions is essential. Data on carbon emissions is available commercially and through government websites, including estimates for specific materials. However, it is
important to note that these values are estimates and averages, and there are some key materials for which data is lacking. Thus, values provided need to be contextualised to be used meaningfully. When describing materials as being recyclable, it is important to consider how they will be processed at the end of the product’s useful life. If the recycling can only be carried out at specialist facilities, then the possibility of actually diverting these materials away from landfill is limited. Additionally, if consumers are responsible for disposal of the product, do they have the necessary information to ensure that it is directed to the appropriate channels for material recovery and reuse? Recycling is positioned in the middle of the waste hierarchy, and is preferable to sending materials to landfill or incineration. However, it’s important to assess whether the product could be better disposed of through reuse or refurbishment. Unfortunately, this information is often not included in product information reports. The Furniture Industry Research Association has recently released a guide, Communicating Environmental Data: Best Practice Guide for the Furniture Industry, to assist companies in effectively communicating environmental data. This is available for free to members of the association, and can be downloaded from our website. By adhering to the recommendations in this guide, manufacturers and suppliers can standardise their reporting on key sustainability parameters. This will enable customers to make informed decisions regarding sustainability, and help prevent the erosion of trust that can result from misleading greenwashing claims and poorly communicated information. www.fira.co.uk
