RUNNIN’ DOWN A DREAM

Ambition still matters in a business built on imagination.

The toy industry is riding high amid a sales boom that’s seen dollar sales, unit sales, and average selling price spike across the board. Now, with the first half of the year in the rearview mirror, the approaching dog days of summer feel like a speed bump in the journey to September’s LA Fall Toy Previews and the all-important holiday selling season.

But some worthy detours lie ahead.

PUT THE HAMMER DOWN

From Gen Con in Indianapolis to ASD Market Week in Las Vegas to the North East Toy & Gift Show in Springfield, Massachusetts, there’s plenty of action on the midsummer road trip when it comes to new product discovery. Whether you’re a specialty retailer seeking the latest in fast-moving trends, a game shop on a quest for new tabletop titles, a C-store hunting for impulse items, or a general merchant looking to boost sales with high-margin closeouts, you’ll find inspiration on every turn.

The spirit of action, adventure, and mystery fuels this issue of The Toy Book, but there’s another factor running in tandem with all of that: ambition.

In an industry built on imagination, ambitious dreamers are creating new stories and products to connect kids and families of all ages. For Brandon Braswell (pg. 14), that means growing a retro-inspired action figure brand, 9 to 5 Warriors, from

the ground up. For Deirdre Cross and Jessica Aceti (pg. 36), it means harnessing the knowledge and experience gained from creating games for other companies as the foundation for The Office of Tiffany Birdsong. And for Jordan Gershowitz (pg. 32), it’s carrying on a toy industry legacy at the intersection of storytelling, entertainment, consumer products, and live experiences. Our team caught up with all of them for a look at the future of fun.

Analog play is having a welcome moment this year, and kids of all ages are creating adventures of their own across familiar categories, like action figures, vehicles, games, and, thanks to some fresh licensing deals, ride-on toys (pg. 26). Likewise, Wham-O’s Hacky Sack is back on the global stage, relaunched by PlayMonster (pg. 44) and getting teens and adults moving with new takes on high-action, tech-free play.

Beyond that, a new wave of blind boxes, bags, and mystery packs (pg. 46) gives collectors the dopamine hits they seek, with everything from cute critters to clip-on accessories for their bags to shelfready sports stars in miniature.

ICONS OF ACTION & ADVENTURE

And in a world where pop culture mashups have become the norm, our editorial cover offers a glimpse of new stories ahead as an icon joins the world of G.I. Joe: Tomb Raider’s Lara Croft. If knowing is half the battle, then raiding is the

other half, and it will all come into focus in the pages of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero x Tomb Raider, debuting in comic shops this October from Skybound Entertainment and Image Comics. Croft joins the 6-inch-scale G.I. Joe Classified Series as the Tomb Raider franchise marks its 30th anniversary, arriving in November, with all the accessories needed to hunt for relics on Cobra Island.

THE NEXT CHAPTER

As this issue lands, our Toy Book team is hard at work on the jumbo-size Fall Toy & Licensing Preview Issue. Debuting during the LA Fall Toy Previews in September, with bonus distribution at Brand Licensing Europe in October, the next issue features The Licensing Book as an internal supplement and comes packed with exclusive content you won’t want to miss. We’re living life on the pulse of play. Now, let's rock! 

SHOWING UP FOR THE INDUSTRY A Look Inside The Toy Association’s Latest Member-First Initiatives and Experiences

The global toy industry never stands still, and neither does The Toy Association.

As needs continue to evolve, the Association supports the industry by providing insights and resources, championing priorities in Washington and beyond, and creating business-growth opportunities. These efforts are rooted in the Association’s core mission: to be in service of members and the broader toy community.

THE TOY DESK

That commitment recently took on a new form with the launch of the Toy Desk, a centralized support hub designed to make it easier than ever for companies to access the expertise and resources they need. Toy professionals can now visit toyassociation.org/toydesk and submit questions through a single portal to seamlessly connect with the right Association team — whether the issue is trade and tariff refunds, safety and technical guidance, event participation, or finding new ways to connect and grow within the industry.

Greeting visitors is Gilbert, the Toy Desk’s cheerful guide, and the Association’s iconic ball brought to life. Named in honor of A.C. Gilbert, inventor of the Erector Set, Olympian, entrepreneur, and founder of The Toy Association (in 1916 as The Toy Manufacturers of America), Gilbert pays tribute to a legacy of service, innovation, and industry leadership that continues to shape the Association’s work.

“The Toy Association exists to help members succeed,” says Ken Ebeling, Executive Vice President of Strategic Development and Member Services at The Toy Association. “From helping our members solve day-to-day challenges to advocating for policies that impact their

businesses, our goal is to show up for them in meaningful ways every day.”

RECENT ADVOCACY WINS

In June, The Toy Association hosted its annual DC Fly-In and Day of Play on Capitol Hill when nearly 30 toy industry leaders participated in more than 40 bipartisan and bicameral meetings with lawmakers and congressional staff to speak on issues most important to toy companies, including AI, trade policy, and the need for the toy sector’s exemption from tariffs. Throughout the week, Association staff engaged directly with administration officials, including Sam Mulopulos, Chief of Staff for the U.S. Trade Representative, helping to further elevate the industry’s priorities and concerns.

Those conversations are translating into results. Following months of advocacy by The Toy Association and its members, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on June 16 announced a significant policy change affecting toy drones and R/C flying toys. Qualifying products will no longer be swept into restrictions intended for sophisticated unmanned aircraft systems, amending an earlier FCC rule change that was overly broad in scope and, while aimed to address national security risks tied to advanced drones, also blocked certification for toys that didn’t pose the same risks.

UPCOMING EXPERIENCES

The Toy Association is bringing the industry together through a busy calendar of events. The LA Fall Preview Market Weeks (September 14-25) once again put The Toy Association’s Toy Building (101 Continental Boulevard in El Segundo) at the center of the activity. Home to more

than 80 showrooms, the Toy Building welcomes retailers, licensors, inventors, and industry professionals for two weeks of events, product previews, meetings, and networking opportunities.

In November, People of Play Week (November 5-8) brings the toy community to Rosemont, Illinois, for a series of events celebrating creativity and connection. The Inventor Pitch & Innovation Conference and 2026 Toy & Game Innovation Excellence Awards (TAGIEs) gather inventors, designers, and industry leaders, while the Chicago Toy & Game Fair (CHITAG) invites families and fans to experience hands-on play and new product discoveries, as a festive kickoff to the holiday shopping season.

From launching new tools to creating growth opportunities, The Toy Association continues to meet members where they are. Companies are encouraged to connect with the team at any time for guidance and support through the Toy Desk, or visit toyassociation.org for information about the many resources, tools, experiences, and opportunities offered on behalf of the toy industry. 

THE SPECIALTY SPARK

Astra Channels Post-Show Momentum Into New Programs, Stronger Outreach, and Deeper Member Connections

We did it.

Marketplace & Academy in Milwaukee was a huge success, and the numbers back it up. More than 2,300 people attended this year’s event, with 470 retail organizations represented. That puts us back at pre-COVID-19 attendance levels, which is something worth celebrating.

But we are not stopping there.

Planning for Astra Marketplace & Academy 2027 in Pittsburgh is already underway, and plenty is happening before we get there. The rest of 2026 will be focused on building momentum, listening to members, and ensuring Astra continues to deliver real value to the specialty toy community.

We launched regional groups in Minneapolis and Denver this spring, and

additional regional groups are planned. These local groups give members a chance to network, learn, and have fun without the distractions of trade shows.

Education is also getting attention. Updates to the Master Sales Representative Program are scheduled to be completed by early 2027, while updates to the Master Retailer Program are expected later in 2027. Astra Academy will continue to grow as new educational content is added to the website.

Members will also see more virtual opportunities, including Zoom roundtables and informational sessions. The Astra Toy app will continue to evolve with new features and improvements. Behind the scenes, work is underway to make communications and technology easier, smoother, and more useful for Astra members.

Astra’s advocacy work also remains a priority. That includes partnering with other organizations to promote the importance of play, support the broader toy industry, and speak up on policy issues that affect our businesses. We are also continuing conversations with groups across the toy, game, gift, hobby, and related industries to share ideas and strengthen the broader community.

And, of course, Marketplace & Academy remains central to the work. Every year, the goal is to make the event better and make sure it lives up to its motto: “The place to be for specialty.”

Member feedback is what keeps all of this pointed in the right direction. Committees, surveys, conversations at shows, phone calls, store visits, and quick chats all matter. If something is working, we want to know. If something needs to change, we need to hear that, too.

The industry is facing real challenges, but it also offers real opportunities. Families are tired of screens. People are craving connection. Specialty toy stores, sales reps, manufacturers, and the people who support them are built for this. Our industry powers discovery of new, quality play experiences every day.

Astra’s staff works remotely across the U.S., from California to Connecticut, but the work is personal. We connect with members at shows, online, on the phone, and in stores whenever we can. If one of us stops by your store, please let us know what’s on your mind. Those real moments will guide our direction and help shape where we go next. 

If Brandon Braswell had known everything he’d face while launching an original toy brand, he may never have started. Fortunately, for fans of 9 to 5 Warriors, Braswell had no clue what he was getting himself into.

Back in 2012, years before the first office-supply oddballs would punch in, Braswell was simply a toy fan, raised on the bright colors and bizarre characters that dominated cartoons in the ’80s and ’90s. One day, while wandering the aisles of his local vintage toy store, Braswell wondered: “Will today’s kids ever experience this kind of magic?”

“I felt like the kids growing up today didn’t have that same originality and fun, wacky characters — something that just makes you want to go to the toy store so badly to see what’s new,” Braswell says. “I don’t know why or what I was called to, but I knew I wanted to create that future nostalgia for the generation growing up today.”

The idea became the foundation for 9 to 5 Warriors, an original action-figure line deeply inspired by the ’90s oddball era. The series transforms everyday office essentials into a quirky cast of collectibles that battle it out in the breakroom after hours. Supported by an ever-expanding story straight out of a Saturday morning cartoon, 9 to 5 Warriors offered Braswell the chance to create that weird, imaginative world he felt was missing from modern toy shelves.

There was just one problem — he had no idea how to actually make a toy. But what he did have was much more important: a clear vision and a willingness to collaborate.

“[Brandon] knew the look he wanted, and he knew that he had to find the right people to execute that look,” says Azhelle Wade, founder of the toy industry training program Toy Creators Academy and Braswell’s longtime mentor. “And he knows where and when to spend his money… He needs an expert in this area, so he’ll find one. That’s just so smart.”

Leaning on his filmmaking background, Braswell spent years fleshing out the world of the Warriors — the Water Cooler Commandos and Break Room Bandits, the bored office worker who created them, and the magic energy drink that brought them to life. He created comic books, trading cards, and even commercials, all before ever holding a toy in his hands, because to Braswell, “Story is what builds that trust and connection, and connection is what lasts generations.”

Then, in 2020, he recruited Scott Hensey — a legendary sculptor whose work includes Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Street Sharks, and Exo Squad — to bring the characters into the third dimension by hand. The figures are deliberately simple, closer to the 5POA (five points of articulation) action figures Braswell grew up with than than the hyper-posable collectibles of the modern era. “There’s something magical about [that simplicity],” he says. “The world is your playground.”

Collaboration is key to Braswell’s design process. He usually recruits artists, hands them mood boards, and lets them riff, bringing their own imagination and ideas into the fold. For example, Slice Age, the line’s bestseller, started as a giant, pizza-inspired dinosaur until one artist took it to the next level, giving the character a club-wielding caveman twist that Braswell never saw coming.

But as it turns out, getting the toys made was only half the battle. From factories and logistics to retail, “every single thing I have to do is a learning curve,” Braswell says. “I didn’t know what I needed to do, and as I started doing it, I learned, ‘Oh, I need to do this as well.’ I always wonder if I would’ve started this journey if I truly knew the end goal — the process, the amount of money. I probably would’ve never begun. So ignorance is bliss.”

Although Braswell’s first Kickstarter failed, his persistence paid off. Braswell regrouped, partnered with retailer BigBadToyStore to relaunch the campaign, and successfully brought

the figures to life. His second Kickstarter in November 2024 was even stronger, raising more than $100,000 — until the 2025 tariffs brought it all to a screeching halt.

Overnight, the cost of finishing Wave 2’s production jumped by about 40%, a hit Braswell hadn’t factored into preorders. To make matters worse, larger companies rushed to get their shipments out ahead of the new rates, pushing smaller indie projects like Braswell’s further and further down factories’ priority lists.

Braswell (left) worked round the clock to bring the magic of ’90s toys to today’s kids. | Source: 9 to 5 Warriors

Where a major corporation might silently raise prices, Braswell leaned on his biggest advantage as an indie creator: direct access to his own customers. He kept backers updated every step of the way, never slapping them with extra charges, but instead choosing to absorb the cost himself. “They took a chance on a no-name brand,” he says. “There’s no way I’m going to come back six months later and say, ‘Hey, can you pay more?’ … To me, that would’ve broken something much more valuable — that trust and that relationship.”

To Wade, it’s this relationship with the consumer that makes independent companies like 9 to 5 Warriors so unique. “Larger companies tend to be led by the people they serve: the retailers,” Wade says. “Indie creators are led by the people they serve, too, but that’s usually the consumers directly … They’re creating toys that respond to society’s current problems, needs, and feelings. They’re so much closer to the end consumer, and their products just have so much heart.”

“When I first announced [9 to 5 Warriors], one negative person said, ‘These look like Happy Meal toys that are $30.’” Braswell says. “And I was like, ‘Hell yeah, Happy Meal toys are awesome!’ … You could see it as simple and stupid, but once you get it in your hand, you’re like, ‘This is something different,’ because a lot of love was put into it.”

For all the challenges that come with running an independent toy company, the most rewarding part for Braswell is seeing

plays with toys nowadays. I got them for him, and he loves them … That was my hypothesis. I wanted to create something for the generation growing up today.”

With the tariffs now reversed, Braswell is working overtime on Wave 3 — new characters, a deeper story, and an eight-issue comic he’s been developing since the early days — but his ambitions extend far beyond a single toy line.

“I want to be the catalyst of the next Saturday morning cartoon generation,” he

Ride-on vehicles can be a big-ticket item for kids. The higher price tag makes parents more selective in what wheels they pick up for their kids. Best Ride On Cars has worked to maintain a value price for consumers by relocating production to Europe, keeping prices stable for consum ers and retailers.

Yet the stories Gershowitz tells are of the everyday, not the highest — or lowest — points in one’s life. In The Tiny Chef Show, Tiny Chef learns the value of patience when he waits for his popsicles to freeze in “Freeze Pops”; in “S’mores,” he overcomes his fear of the dark with the help of his friends. In The Snoopy Show, Snoopy struggles with public speaking, “even though he can barely get it together for a pretend tea party,” Sally points out rather rudely, before Charlie Brown helps his favorite beagle prepare to become the head beagle (someday).

“I’m a believer that no matter what age you are, we like stories in which characters grow as people,” Gershowitz explains. “Whether you are telling a story for a preschooler or whether you’re watching a feature film that’s intended for older audiences, we love going on these journeys with characters as they overcome their challenges.”

Jordan brings that ethos to every project. “My writing style doesn’t really change. It’s really just being mindful of

who the audience is and how I’m going to tell that story.” Clawdeen from Monster High or Tiny Chef could also dread public speaking, not just Snoopy, he says, but the story might change slightly. “It’s a different age group that’s watching,” he explains, “How do we meet the audience where they are?”

“Working with Jordan was, quite simply, one of those collaborations that reminded you why this industry can be so exciting,” France says. “He’s deeply story-driven, but he never loses sight of the world around the story: the universe, the characters, the extensions, the way a show can live beyond the screen.”

“Cars are why you get butts in the seats,” Gershowitz says, but that doesn’t mean the racetrack can’t offer more fast cars. “What makes you come back beyond the amazing action set pieces that our team creates is because we identify with Coop and his friends, right?” Gershowitz had never been to a race before he wrote for Hot Wheels Let’s Race, much less Karters. “But I know what it’s like to be the new kid at camp. I know what it’s like to be unsure of myself,” he says, which is an experience viewers can relate to more than launching off a ramp into the stomach of a dragon. “It’s like channeling

those human emotions and those human experiences into the story,” he adds, “at the core, you’re also identifying and being really excited about the opportunity to see yourself in the characters.”

Storytelling doesn’t end in the writer’s room for Gershowitz. From the toy aisle to the playroom, his son has questions about action figures and yet-to-be-known characters. “He goes, ‘Tell me all the characters,’” he says. “He’s like, ‘“Tell me all the characters I don’t know.’” With Gershowitz at the helm, at home or at work, the stories and opportunities to spin a new tale will never end.

“Jordan is genuinely one of the most talented and forward-thinking people I’ve had the pleasure of working with,” France shares. “I have no doubt his best work is still ahead of him.” 

Anew player is grabbing a chair at the table. Co-founded by game industry veterans Deirdre Cross and Jessica Aceti, The Office of Tiffany Birdsong is securing its spot at game night.

The Seattle-based tabletop gaming studio officially opened its doors in January and is preparing for its first official product launch this fall. Accompanying Cross and Aceti’s decades of experience across legacy brands like Moose Games and Funko Games are Director of Product Development Matt Christianson and former Funko President and CEO Andrew Perlmutter, who serves as a strategic advisor and investor.

The team is dedicated to cultivating connections through play and using unexpected avenues to deliver games with style and charm, something “Tiffany Birdsong” would approve of. The company’s namesake isn’t a real person, but rather a heightened creative presence.

According to Aceti, the two co-founders “actually used to work in this office together, and we always said, ‘Oh, Tiffany’s not here.’ It’s this third person, almost like the world’s most interesting woman who was never there, but the idea was to create the kinds of games that Tiffany Birdsong would want to play. These very kinds of epic experiences that only Tiffany Birdsong could provide. It’s really combining our world and our backgrounds into this new brand.”

THE PERFECT HOUR

The Office of Tiffany Birdsong’s mission is to create “The

Perfect Hour,” where the moments spent with its games (and away from digital distractions) are fulfilling and worthwhile. To the brains behind Birdsong, the promise of “The Perfect Hour” means that players are undoubtedly entertained and feel truly tied to the people around them.

To achieve this, the team is developing tabletop games with a spark — from the initial packaging that begs you to play to the game mechanics that keep bringing you back. The company has already launched its first brand, Hall Party Games, with three games in the pipeline. The first game launches in early September, with two additional titles following this fall. While the specific content and game mechanics are still under wraps, the titles follow Hall Party Games’ product building blocks: effortless, energetic, and aesthetic.

“This is the parameter we give to our [Hall Party Games] design team: we are looking for games that you can pitch in five seconds, that’s kind of the scope … this is exactly the box we want to be in. I believe that a lot of creative energy comes from tight design parameters, finding unusual solutions … I think some great surprises and really killer products can come from those parameters,” Cross says.

If a product doesn’t necessarily fit within these guidelines, it can still find a home at a future imprint, as The Office of Tiffany Birdsong is just beginning to flap its wings. Alongside its original games, Tiffany Birdsong is interested in developing IP-based products. Cross and Aceti share an intimate knowledge and refined skill in translating diverse IPs into creative games, having
