New courses available for rural and remote clinicians The Office of Rural and Remote Health (ORRH) has launched a new suite of training courses created to support and enhance the skills required for clinicians working in rural and remote settings. The first courses - Eye Assessment and Management, Specimen Collection and Management, Intraosseous (IO) Access, Urinary Catheterisation and Management, and Skin Closure of Simple Acute Wounds – are available now. New and improved digital tools to support end-of-life care We are making it easier to support consistent, quality, person-centred care in the last days and hours of life. From 29 September, clinicians can access new and improved ieMR tools, including: • Updated Care Plan for the Dying Person (CPDP) – Terminal PowerPlan. • New CPDP PowerForm • New speciality observation chart – Comfort Observation and Symptom Assessment (COSA). For non-ieMR sites, the updated paper-based CPDP version 9 is available via WINC. These enhanced workflows align with statewide best practice and the Queensland Health Palliative and End-ofLife Care Strategy. Prepare now by reviewing the education package and supporting resources for ieMR and non-ieMR sites.

Staff Noticeboard
Patient Safety Net has been developed to provide staff with a straightforward process for raising a patient safety concern they feel has not been addressed adequately through the standard reporting processes. Patient Safety Net encourages local identification and resolution of a patient safety concern and complements existing patient safety systems. It does not replace, nor negate existing clinical incident management processes and is not appropriate for urgent patient safety concerns or clinical deterioration. Patient Safety Net can be used by all Queensland Health staff including contractors, agency staff, students and volunteers and encourages staff to seek local resolution first where possible. Patient Safety Net can be activated by staff (the reporter) via phone, email, face-to-face or via an online portal. The reporter can choose to raise a concern anonymously or request that their details remain confidential. Concerns are received by a Patient Safety Steward who will assess and review all concerns raised. If the concern is not in

scope for Patient Safety Net, the steward assists the reporter to access the most appropriate pathway. The THHS Patient Safety Steward can be contacted on 0477 917 609, or email thhs_patientsafetynet@health.qld.gov.au or access the online portal Patient Safety Net on QHEPS for more information.

What’s happening Next • Work is underway to establish the SMO (Senior Medical Officer) Portfolio Leads model, providing clear clinical leadership across key perioperative domains • Work will focus on enhancing coordination between the Emergency Department (ED), Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and perioperative services to improve patient flow • Implementing initiatives to streamline theatre workflows, improve utilisation, and support timely patient movement through the perioperative pathway.
