When The Waters Rise, Will You Know What To Do? According to the American Red Cross, flash floods are the No. 1 weather-related killer in the U.S. Almost half of all flash flood fatalities are vehicle related, according to the National Weather Service. If you're driving and approach a water-covered road, turn around. Just 6 inches of water can stall a vehicle, and 2 feet can float most cars, trucks and SUVs. Here are some other tips to stay high and dry: Floods are one of the most common weather hazards in the United States. They can happen anywhere at any time of year.

What is a Flash Flood?

Densely populated areas have a higher risk for flash floods than rural areas. Flash floods can occur within minutes or hours of a heavy rainfall, and waters can rise as high as 30 feet or more. Even small streams and creeks can flood rapidly and cause damage. Flash floods are usually caused by slow-moving thunderstorms.

According to the National Weather Service, "Flash floods are short-term events occurring within six hours of the causative event (heavy rain, dam break, levee failure, rapid snowmelt and ice jams) and often within two hours of the start of high-intensity rainfall.” Flash floods can move homes and cars, uproot trees and destroy bridges. Because floods happen with little to no warning, residents in low-lying areas are particularly at risk.

!

Know your proximity to rivers, streams and dams During heavy rain, avoid underpasses, underground parking garages and basements Avoid hiking or camping if thunderstorms are predicted Develop an evacuation plan for your family Don't walk in water above your ankles; you can be swept off your feet in as little as 6 inches of rushing water Turn off the electricity and other utilities During heavy rain, Township storm sewers can become blocked with debris causing flooding in the street. In preparation of any rain event, Township crews do attempt to clean storm inlets to make sure they are able to collect water from the street. If you notice debris on top of a storm inlet before or after a storm, contact the Township immediately. If your roadway becomes flooded during a storm, call 911 immediately so emergency personnel can respond to close the road to traffic.

What is Impervious Surface? Impervious Surface- A surface that prevents the infiltration of water into the ground. Impervious surfaces include, but are not limited to, streets, sidewalks, pavements, driveway areas, or roofs. Any surface areas designed to be gravel or crushed stone shall be regarded as impervious surfaces. Impervious surfaces reduce the amount of rainwater that can be absorbed into the ground. When there is less ground for water to penetrate, it can quickly flow directly into stormsewers and creeks, increasing the likelihood of more frequent and more severe flooding. Additionally, pollutants are unable to penetrate an impervious surface. Rainfall may carry these pollutants directly into our waterways resulting in water that is unfit for wildlife or recreational activities. Water runoff from an acre of paved surface is approximately ten to twenty times greater than an acre of grass. Materials such as crushed stone, porous concrete, and pervious pavers can provide various amounts of infiltration but are not considered 100% pervious. To minimize the impact of water runoff, impervious surface coverage is limited to a maximum percentage per property, which varies by municipality. Any additional increase of concrete, brick, asphalt, etc. on a property may require a building permit prior to construction.

SEWER BACKUP AND FLOODING INSURANCE

!

Sewer backups and flooding can cause devastating property damage and are not covered by standard homeowners’ insurance policies. The majority of these claims are the responsibility of the property owner. Sewage from sanitary sewer lines occasionally back up into houses through drain pipes. These backups not only cause extensive water damage that is difficult and expensive to repair, but also create health hazards.

Easttown, Willistown, & Newtown Townships are not responsible for damages caused by sewers, drains and sump pumps except under limited/special circumstances provided by the PA Municipal Immunity laws. Township residents must be aware that they should review their homeowner’s, flood and sewer backup insurance coverage with their agent/insurance company in order to properly protect their personal residences—probably the most valuable tangible asset that we all have.

Please pay particular attention to the following coverages: Coverage for Sewers, Drains and Sump Pumps: This valuable coverage is not included under your standard homeowner's policy but can be purchased by endorsement for an additional premium. Flood Coverage: Flood coverage is not included under your homeowner’s policy. However, flood insurance is available under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and can be obtained through your insurance agent or broker.

The Townships do not provide flood insurance. 6

How can you help the Library? There is always work that doesn't get done in the library because of lack of funding, or lack of volunteers. Dollar for dollar, the allocation of money at this library is incomparable. Just one new red book cart was an exciting addition for Angela Hegadorn, our Children's Librarian! Books are just the beginning at Newtown Square Public Library of course, it has an excellent collection but it offers so much more! Because libraries are such an integral part of our communities, here are 5 Great Reasons To Visit Newtown Square Public Library:

You can make an impact. Get involved, and join a great community network. We would love to see you!

Both were a huge success!

#3) The Technology!

The Delaware County Library System's technology base was just upgraded, and the staff here adapted quickly. But beyond that, they welcome new tech. The Friends of Newtown Square Public Library recently purchased a state-of-the art, high-security wireless system for the library. If you're looking for high speed, safe, free internet access for studying, working, job searching, or just surfing the internet the library is your spot.

Making Conversations Easier SpeakUp! is an innovative solution to the age-old problem of how to get teenagers talking openly and honestly about stress, relationships, drugs and alcohol, academic pressure, sex, social media, parental expectations, depression, anxiety and other challenges. The good news is that SpeakUp! knows from 18 years of listening to thousands of teens and families, that when adults listen without judgment, young people will tell us how to best guide and support them. Some things we have learned from listening: 1. See teens as problem solvers, not problems to be solved. Teens tell us, “When our parents trust us, we trust ourselves.”

mistakes, emphasize their strengths and solutions. “I just want to be acknowledged for something I have done right, rather than just what I've done wrong or haven't done.” 8. Ask, “what would help?” “Sometimes what I really need at that moment is just someone to wash my uniform.” And, “Sometimes I could just use a cup of hot cocoa.” And, “Sometimes I just need a break to watch TV and then I can get back to my homework.” 9. Clarify what they want from the conversation. Ask, “Do you want advice, or do you just want to vent?” “We want to be heard, before we are helped.” And, “Sometimes I just want to complain and have my parents say, “that stinks.” 10. Share your experience rather than advice. They often want our advice, they just want to be in the best position to receive it. “I learn way more from what they did than what they tell me to do.” 11. Acknowledge and validate them. “Sometimes I just want to hear that it's natural to be upset or anyone in my situation would be disappointed.”

2. Let them know you love them no matter what. “I just want to know that they love me, even when I make mistakes especially when I make mistakes.” 3. Be equals in the conversation. You may not be equals in decision making, but everyone feels valued when they feel heard. Try to listen first and speak second. “It's easier to understand my parents when I feel like they really try to understand my point of view.” 4. Recognize how much they want to please you and hate to disappoint you. Teen's behavior is shaped, in part, by how much they want to please you and make you proud. “I hate to disappoint my parents. I lie about my grades because I know how much they want me to succeed.” And, “You know, when we mess up, we already feel bad.” 5. Think coping, not character. See their behavior as a coping strategy - an attempt to deal with the situation they were in at that time. When problems arise, brainstorm healthier coping strategies rather than focusing on their character. “I made a mistake and I cheated, but I don't want them to think I'm a cheater.”

12. Find out if you're inadvertently adding to their stress. Ask, “Are there things I do or say that create stress in your life?” “I get worried I'm going to flub my lines when my parents keep offering to practice them with me.” And, “You made it all look so easy, so I thought there must be something wrong with me that I was struggling.” 13. Stay calm. It is best to sit down and problem-solve together when you are both calm and not rushed. “I am not talking to my parents about my problems, because they are so stressed, and I don't want to burden them.” And, “I raise my voice when they do.” And, “Their intensity makes me shut down.”

14. Stay present in this day, with this teenager. “My parents focus too much on my future. It really stresses me out.” And, “I believe everyone deserves their own account in the trust bank. My older siblings made a lot of mistakes and now there is no trust left for me.” 15. Share your family background. “It helps me to know that my parents made mistakes, too.” And, “It helps to know that they are worried when I drink because there is alcoholism in my family.” 16. Have fun with them. Spend relaxing time without an agenda. “I love taking a break and watching TV with my parents.” And, “Family dinners are great, but only when they're short and we don't talk about school.” 17. Apologize when you're wrong. “I feel really respected when my parents say they're sorry for yelling.” 18. Let them have activities that aren't achievement-oriented. “We don't even like to tell our parents what we like to do, because then they want to make us do it better.” And, “When they ask me if I want lessons, I feel like I'm not good enough.” And, “I don't want to tell my parents I like to bake, because they'd want me to open a bakery.” 19. Focus on talking not “the talk.” When we were growing up we were given “the sex talk” or “the drugs talk.” It was more like an awkward lecture and we wanted it to end. Now, we know it's not one conversation, it's an ongoing conversation where we listen and share perspectives over time. “I told my mom I had a prom date, and she launched into a safe sex talk before she even asked her name.” Or “I wanted to tell my mom about my new friends at school and I got a lecture about peer pressure and drinking instead.”

6. Let them know their mistakes don't define them (and neither do their achievements). “It helps when you remind me that blowing the tryouts doesn't mean I'm not an athlete or getting a C in chem doesn't mean I can't be a doctor.”

20. Try to avoid making tech the bad guy. Teens often take criticism about tech personally. It may help to acknowledge the importance of tech in their lives so that you can help them make sense of it. “I find it so much easier to tell my dad how I feel in a text.” And, “My parents don't let me have a cell phone or social media and I understand why. But, I am so isolated. I sit at the lunch table and I have no idea what anyone is talking about.”

7. Focus on their strengths. Rather than focusing on our teens' problems and

Giving - The Garrett Williamson Way What inspires Carol?

It's Better to Give than Receive: Stewardship and Support at Garrett Williamson Over the last 100 years, thousands of children have run across the wide lawns, explored the woods, built, and re-built their lives in the Garrett Williamson (GW) community. The philanthropic founder, Elizabeth Garrett, left her beautiful farm “ for the support and maintenance of poor children…as many as possible…during the spring, summer, and fall months...” As the Executive Director, Carol Kaplan Ruark and her team are fulfilling and expanding upon Mrs. Garrett's wishes for this historic property.

I feel it is a privilege to provide a sense of normalcy, a caring environment for children during bad times and good. The holidays can be a particularly stressful time, and Garrett Williamson is proud to be a supportive, stable sanctuary. The administration, teachers, camp leaders, and counselors are compassionate, inspiring, and set a high bar for the children. And during the holidays, we care for our families with a "Giving Tree.” Anonymous requests are posted for whatever a family may need clothing, holiday dinners, etc. The requests are then fulfilled by anonymous donors, and delivered privately to the families. Nearly 50% of the children who attend Garrett Williamson programs come from a population which works hard, but struggles to meet their children's needs. Garrett Williamson loves, understands, and serves these families. You can too!

Like many leaders, Carol builds trust through her capacity to hear and support the team, the Board of Directors, the donors, and Delaware County overall. Under Carol's stewardship, Garrett Williamson's amazing 240-acre property in Newtown Square is solidly protected, and consciously growing. Carol gives each her full attention, and engages with a caring, personal attitude that helps hundreds of children and adults trust her - and feel safe in this green haven. And because she walks alongside, not above, colleagues and constituents - Garrett Williamson is thriving. The non-profit now runs two award-winning programs for children: Garrett's Way Childcare and Learning Center, which serves infants 6 weeks of age through Kindergarten, and Camp Garrett, which serves youth age 5 through 15 every summer.

Everyone with an open heart for children, the environment, and education can help at Garrett Williamson - from retirees who would love to rock babies in the nursery, to donors who want their investments to have an immediate positive impact, to readers, gardeners, and beekeepers! Take this opportunity to expand your role in the community by helping local children - get involved in Garrett Williamson! Carol welcomes interested parties to learn more about how they can contribute and support Garrett Williamson's families and future. Please visit www.garrettwilliamson.org or call 610.353.7690.

Alexand Camp D ra Morrison irector at GW

And our annual appeal is November 13th! Here's to another 100 years of growing at Garrett Williamson!

Maintaining the last original land preserve in Newtown Square is a challenge, but the GW staff is both resourceful and serious about their stewardship. They care deeply for the children (nearly half of whom receive scholarships), and continuously improve the facilities, all the while protecting the environment.

Sports & Health Keep injuries off the court

Whether you're a weekend warrior or a proud parent on the sidelines, here's what you need to know about preventing basketball injuries. Get the right gear Personal protective equipment might feel excessive on the court, especially if you're just playing a game of pickup. But there's a good reason for this equipment: it's your best defense against a sports injury. While basketball requires minimal equipment compared with other sports like hockey or soccer, there are a few things you can pick up to keep yourself or your athlete safe on the court: A mouth guard Basketball sneakers with ankle support Athletic goggles, in lieu of glasses Compression socks to aid in recovery, if you play regularly

David Vegari, MD Orthopedic surgeon at Lankenau Medical Center Main Line Health

As the weather cools down, basketball season is picking up. And, while basketball season can be fun for players and fans alike, it's also plagued by the potential for injuries. “Basketball relies on being able to make quick, short movements, and your knees and ankles are doing the majority of the work. That's what makes injuries like jumper's knee, torn ligaments and ankle sprains and strains so common among basketball players at any level,” explains David Vegari, MD, orthopedic surgeon at Lankenau Medical Center, part of Main Line Health.

Hydrate early and often A bottle of water (or several!) is a must when you're doing any kind of physical activity, whether it's a basketball game or just a workout at the gym. Stopping for water breaks helps prevent dehydration and replenishes the water that your body loses through sweat, but the benefits don't stop there.

you are injured, your body can recover more quickly,” explains Dr. Vegari. Play by the rules Just like it's important to take a coach or trainer's advice regarding personal protective equipment, it's also important to make sure you're playing by the rules. Playing too aggressively can result in injury yourself or others. No matter how competitive it gets, remember: It's just a game. Get back in the game If you've had a sports-related injury or have a condition that's keeping you out of the game, our sports medicine physicians and specialists are here to help you get back to doing the things you love. Our goal is to help you get back on the court, the field, the track - whatever activity you're missing out on and to live an active life again, free of pain and limitation. At Main Line Health locations throughout the Philadelphia region we offer evaluation, diagnosis, and non-operative as well as surgical treatment and rehabilitation for active adults and adolescents with acute injuries or chronic conditions related to sports or other activities. To schedule an appointment with a specialist at Main Line Health, call 1.866.CALL.MLH or visit mainlinehealth.org.

“Water is the best choice for athletes or because it can help prevent muscle fatigue or cramping, which is important if you're working out for a longer period of time or playing a game that can go for several hours,” says Dr. Vegari. While sports drinks, like Gatorade or Powerade, might be the preferred choice for some athletes, it's always best to reach for water to keep you hydrated before and during a game. Recognize pain and address it early Basketball injuries are common and, if they're severe enough, can sideline your season. For this reason, it's better to take a break from the game than to play through any pain or discomfort. Before you get back on the court, try the RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation) method to see if it helps heal the pain. If not, make an appointment with your primary care doctor to determine whether it's an injury that just needs more time to heal or requires special treatment. Whatever the case, remember: don't play with pain. Fit in additional workouts One way to protect yourself against injury is to make sure you're supplementing your basketball games with other workouts, too. “Staying in shape can help you prevent injuries. It helps to build muscle and prime your body to respond better to the physical demands of a sport like basketball. And, if

Senior Lifestyles Depression Is

NOT

a Normal Part of Aging Feeling sad, blue or lonely happens to everyone periodically. However, when these feelings persist or when they cause an individual to stop eating, sleeping or feeling in control of life, that may be a sign of chronic depression. Depression in older adults often goes untreated for a variety of reasons; some think that depression is a normal part of aging, some view it as a character flaw and others are concerned about the cost of treatment. Whatever the reason, untreated depression increases the risk of medical illness and cognitive decline.

“Surrey Home Care has helped clients who were active and then over time became more and more withdrawn, until they couldn't do any of the things they had formerly loved.” says Mary Ellen Herbert, RN, one of Surrey's nurse case managers. “They didn't realize they were suffering from depression. Surrey works closely with patients' physicians and families to help these folks get back to health.” The Mental Health Resource Program at Surrey Services offers low or no cost community based resources and referrals for older adults. Call Nicole at 610-6479172 for personalized referral information. All inquiries are confidential. This is NOT a crisis or emergency hotline. If someone needs immediate help, please call the Friendship line at

800-971-0016 or the Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-8255. Additionally, Surrey offers a variety of programs that can support positive aging and mental health. Yoga, Mindfulness, Tai Chi or art and music classes can help an individual who is feeling isolated become more engaged and active.

Depression is a disease like diabetes or arthritis. Accepting that depression is not a normal part of aging and seeking treatment is a huge step toward wellness.
