The Newtown Square Library Welcomes Art Teacher, Author, & Painter, Jean Spicer!
How does Jean fit all the events, jobs, and actual painting in her schedule? She related: I like to get things done! That may be part of the reason why I love watercolors. They are more immediate than oils, and with the right technique, you can get quite intense colors. My husband (who is also an artist) and I both work from home, in separate studios. Mine is very clean, well-lit, and well-organized. A perfect place to express my love of art!
3) The final plan is key. I always ask my students to do an 8 & ½ x 11 inch sketch of what they want to paint. Once you have worked out the design, you are far more capable of visualizing the finished painting in your mind. Jean works on one or two paintings simultaneously, and can finish a smaller one in several days. Large watercolors may take around five days, and usually focus on either florals or landscapes. Why florals?
Jean's workshops are so popular that international organizers often have to run multiple classes. "I work well with groups of twenty, and in Australia I had over 80 attendees so I stayed for a month to accommodate all the students." Her curriculum includes many advanced concepts, as well as tried and true basics. Three of her most important tips for starting a painting are: Many artists aspire to the kind of life that Jean Spicer leads. She has over 100 awards in National Competitions, is a juror for many art organizations (including the American Watercolor Society), and teaches watercolor workshops everywhere from Australia to England. Oh… and she wrote a book: Bright & Beautiful Flowers in Watercolor. So, it is no surprise that it took a few years for Jean to be able to accept an invitation to exhibit her wonderful watercolors at the Newtown Square Public Library throughout November and December!
1) Your choice of paper and pigments makes a huge difference in the final product. Think about what you want to do with this piece, and how long it may live on. 2) Size and composition are important. Consider how large a piece you are interested in working on, and how you can best arrange all the subjects in your painting. You want it to look interesting, to draw in the viewer.

Newtown Public Library Artist Series "I love to paint with brilliant, bright colors, and florals allow for a vibrant range. There is a watercolor technique called "wet into wet," where you actually drop color into color. It generates vivid hues! The reflection of light off glass vases is also a fun, interesting challenge. You need to understand a good deal about light, how to expose it, and how to obscure it in different situations. Finally, by dropping a few petals, you get the sense of change, the movement of time."
Speaking of time, how long have you been an artist? "Since the third grade! My Mother kept me busy with pencils and paper everywhere we went particularly in church. I think art chose me. I didn't choose art."

Music at the Holidays Newtown Square Presbyterian Church Music lifts our spirits and touches a chord deep within all of us. No matter how tired or overwhelmed we may feel during the holidays, music has the unique ability to engage us in very personal ways. Because music is such a key component of the holidays, Newtown Square Presbyterian Church invites the community to celebrate the love and promise of Christmas with our new Director of Music - Ting Ting Wong! Ting T ing is uniquely qualified to bring a positive worldview and energy to our community. She was born in Hong Kong, has multiple degrees in Piano Accompanying and Vocal Coaching - and is jump-starting an innovative and joyous musical atmosphere in the church. She is incorporating 4 hand-piano performances, open choir events (where visitors are welcome to participate), and exciting new music! Ting Ting (which means "elegant" in Cantonese) reflected on the upcoming holiday services: As the Director of Music, I review a great deal of repertoire, and want to select pieces that engage and serve the community; preparing and sustaining them for the holiday "crunch." You may be thinking about people you've lost, or hosting 30 people for dinner. Either way, it can be stressful. The best thing I can offer
is for our loved ones to concentrate on something higher and holier than ourselves. For example, on December 17th, we will have "A Prelude to Christmas" and will sing many beautiful pieces, including "The Work of Christmas." This inspirational song elaborates on how we should all seek to help each other, to "find the lost, heal the broken, feed the hungry‌to bring peace among brothers, and to make music from the heart." It brings the meaning of Christmas into our daily lives. And it's glorious! Newtown Square Presbyterian also welcomes everyone to multiple traditional holiday events - from Cocoa, Cookies and Carols (a perennial family favorite on December 17th at 4:00 pm) - to two special services on Christmas Eve. The 5:00 pm service features a live Nativity scene, and every child (visitor and member) is invited to don a costume and join the tableau! Away in a Manger is a favorite during this service, along with all the songs and scripture which support the enactment of the birth of Christ. The beautiful 8:00 pm candlelight service will feature hymns around the theme of this blessed night. It will include "Oh Holy Night," "All Through The Night," "A Night of Silence" by Daniel Kantor, and of course, "Silent Night." As we know, Christmas Carols are powerful because they recall how a prophecy was fulfilled. This church welcomes everyone from everywhere - to share the sensations and joy of these hymns, and remember our blessings in this great nation, and small, interconnected world.

Ryan Pearce is originally from the Bay Area, California, but he's a Pacific Northwesterner at heart. Ryan studied Neuroscience at Washington State University and originally planned to attend medical school until God opened his eyes to vocational ministry. Ryan is a second-year student at Princeton.
And of course, Reverend Dr. Jeanne Thomas is the welcoming leader of Newtown Square Presbyterian Church. She continues to inspire and promote a caring church community. Native Plants
Native Plantings Support Healthy Habitat Changes to the landscape at the Arboretum are usually subtle and, yet, the landscape is an ever-changing palette. Beginning with a peek of new green buds in spring, the landscape shifts from spring's wildflowers to summer's ferns and onto the colorful hues of autumn leaves to the soft whites of winter. The changing patterns of light and shadow hint at each approaching new season. Jenkins Arboretum & Gardens is truly a "Garden for All Seasons".
While many botanical gardens feature more dazzling and beautifully colorful plantings, the Arboretum strives to be true to its mission and to protect a variety of natural habitats, supporting the biodiversity of native plant and animal species.

Why grow and conserve native plants? Native plants, fondly called "natives," are defined as those plants that occur in the region in which they evolved or were present prior to the arrival of the Europeans. By growing native plants, Jenkins is restoring some of the natural biodiversity of this area. Many wildlife species are dependent on the habitat provided by native vegetation. These plantings can enhance the wildlife population of the area. For example, the Arboretum's existing stand of cattails down by the pond provides nesting for many redwinged blackbirds and is the ideal habitat for this.

Natives possess traits that make them uniquely adapted to local conditions. Once established, these plants require less water than other plants - a trait that is becoming increasingly important for water conservation in this drought-stricken period. Pests and disease do not severely affect as many natives, resulting in less need for chemical controls. Fewer pesticides preserve biodiversity and reduce exposure to toxic substances to people and wildlife. Natives help to maintain soil fertility, reduce erosion, and require less fertilizer. The wildflower beds behind the pond in our gardens feature a wide range of shrubs,

Tali Guy's Recipe Page Ingredients:
Apple Roses Apple Roses are beautiful and tasty pastries. The unique cutting of the apples and the dough creates a rose flower shape that will bring grace to the dinner table.
4 baking apples(red apples will provide a look of red roses) Juice of 1 lemon Puff pastry roll ¼ cup sugar 2 tsp cinnamon 1 stick melted butter 2 tbs powder sugar
Preparation:
Grease a muffin pan and dust with flour. Cut the apples in half and remove the cores. Slice the apples into thin slices and wet them with lemon juice to prevent darkening. Spread the apple slices on a flat plate in several batches and microwave for 45 seconds. The apples should be flexible and keep their shape. Roll the dough, brush with melted butter and sprinkle with a mix of sugar and cinnamon. Cut the dough into strips 12"-15" long and 2.5"-3" wide. Place the apple slices along the long edge of the pastry strip beginning 1" from its end. The apple slices should be placed so that they extend a little over the long edge of the dough, and overlap each other a little. Fold the bottom half of the dough up over the apples, leaving the edges of the apples exposed beyond the dough. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle with a mix of sugar and cinnamon. Roll the strips, stand them upward, and place on the muffin pan. Bake in the oven at 400 degrees for 45 minutes, or until they become golden. Let cool for 15 minutes before removing from the pan. Garnish with powder sugar before serving. Bon Appétit!

Football parties, Halloween and holidays are quickly approaching and if your dog has any habits that may be problematic or bothersome, now is the time to work on them! With all of the fun fall events, it is important to keep your furry family member in mind for their comfort and safety. Many dogs have learned to overreact to the sound of a doorbell or door knock, leading to uncomfortable door greetings and potential escapes. This behavior can be problematic if you plan to have friends and family visit for a party or meal. It adds an extra layer of stress to what should be an enjoyableevening.
night. You can invite a few friends over for a football game or movie (make sure it is airing on TV so that you have regular commercial breaks) and use them to help you train your dog. Of course, you can pay them in the form of food and drinks. Football games and movies that are airing on TV have fairly regular commercial breaks that you can use as training trials. Simply ask all of your friends to walk outside at the start of a commercial break and have them each ring the bell for you while you train following the directions above. You can act as Person B and have your friends ring the bell while you reward your dog at the appropriate location. As an added bonus, your friends can walk over and greet or feed your dog, as well. This allows extra rewarding for your dog and it's away from the door! Fall is a great time to begin working with your dog on indoor etiquette. Summer warmth is fading and many social activities begin to move inside, so it is important to ensure that your dog is as happy to have visitors as you are! Happy Training!
Rude door behavior, such as barking or lunging at the door when people visit, is extremely common and a highly reinforced behavior. From the dog's point of view, every time a delivery man or mailman approaches your door, they are a possible intruder and require immediate attention. Your dog does not realize that those individuals were scheduled to leave regardless of your dog's reaction. In their mind, they have just saved you from a potential threat because the person does leave while your pet is throwing a fit or behaving poorly. Thus the behavior is reinforced. While you probably can't ask every person coming to your home to act as a training tool (people have places to go and things to do after all), you can prepare your dog to behavior more appropriately when they hear the doorbell or knocker. You have probably already taught your dog a variety of verbal cues without you even realizing that you have. Remember that your dog does not naturally speak English, but they have learned by association that "sit" means putting their bottom on the floor. They have also learned associations that you have not explicitly taught them, such as the doorbell brings potential intruders to protect you from or friends to jump on and greet. It is your job to use the doorbell as a cue for a different behavior. Just as your dog has associated various words with specific behaviors, they are able to associate the sound of the door with a certain behavior. There are plenty of options for what your dog could do when they hear someone at the door. One option is to send your dog to their crate or their bed at the sound of a doorbell (you can substitute a knock if that fits your home better). The easiest way to begin training would be with two people: one to ring the bell and the other to train the dog. Start by having one person outside by the door and one person ready with treats or another high value reward (cheese, pieces of hot dog are great rewards!). Person A will ring the bell followed immediately by Person B running over to the predetermined location, such as a crate, and toss in a tasty treat. Person B should not say anything, as you want your dog to associate the bell with a location based on the reward -- not a word with the location. Your dog will probably still bark and get worked up by the door, but unlike past experiences, no one is going to come in or respond. After a few moments your dog will probably get mildly confused or bored and come see what Person B is doing. That's when they will find their tasty reward. Person B can give them a few more rewards for hanging out in their crate then release them. Repeat this game of Person A ringing the bell and Person B rewarding the dog for going into their crate. Do this routine a few times a day until your dog is sprinting to their crate at the sound of the bell. Now you can start to wean out the treat that is waiting in the crate and only reward your dog after they have entered the crate. The next time an unplanned door bell ring occurs, your dog will hopefully run to their crate. You should follow and reward your dog still and even potentially close the door or give a "stay" cue, allowing you to answer the door as needed without a dog overreacting at your entranceway. You have now changed the meaning of the doorbell for your dog and ended the problematic behavior of poor door etiquette. You can greet your guests and continue on with your plans without worrying about an overprotective dog, escaping dog, etc. If you do not have a helper to ring the bell for you, consider scheduling a regular training party in the guise of football or movie

Jane came to visit her Mom, Amy, in Chesterbrook and was sad to see that her Mom, who had always made the most amazing meals, was eating far too many cold sandwiches for lunch and dinner. She seemed to be having a hard time getting to the grocery store and preparing meals. Jane just knew it was time to get some help for her Mom.
Marie Keely, MSW, LSW, Home Services Care Manager at Surrey agrees. "It takes most of us some time to warm to the idea of having help in our homes." Marie suggests that adult children should work up to the idea by having more than one conversation with parents so they have time to contemplate having help in the home. "I suggest that adult children share with parents that having a social companion can keep them more independent. The social companion can help them attend social events, get to appointments, prepare meals and keep the house neater. That supports independent living."
But her Mom did not see it that way. Amy was not keen on the idea of someone helping her. Amy had always been the helper in life, from raising kids to volunteering at church. And she was also not thrilled with Jane telling her what she needed. After all, Amy thought, "I'm the parent, not the child." Expect Resistance "Amy's response to her daughter suggesting that she need home care is very common. Almost expected," says Donna Marshall, MSW, LCSW, Intake Coordinator at Surrey Services for Seniors. "We want to remain independent as we get older, and we might need help understanding that in fact getting home care can actually keep you more independent.
Start a conversation with your concern for your parent and then spell out exactly what you are concerned about. "Talk about concerns and then work together to brain storm solutions," says Wendy Walsh, RN, CMC, Aging Life Care Manager at Surrey . "It may take some time for the idea to appeal to your parent," says Donna. "You can say, yes you are still capable of doing these tasks but why not get help and free yourself for things more enjoyable than laundry and cooking every single meal." It is not easy for parents to adjust to the role shift as their children now serve as caregivers for them. "When you get a professional to come do an assessment of your parent's needs that helps the conversation," says Wendy. "You may find that your parents may not need as much care as you think or may need more. They may also need a different type of care. A professional assessment can help sort this out for your family."

Donna visited with Jane and Amy and offered a professional assessment. Her recommendation was for a social companion a few hours a week. Once Amy realized that having a social companion would increase her independence and help her cook meals, Amy was thrilled. Donna matched Amy with a social companion who shared her love of cooking.
