Communication is Key Business Tax Information

The Public Information Office is offering another way of communicating with the citizens of Upper Merion Township. The LED Message Board, which stands 3' 4" high by 7' 4" long is now located at the intersection of Henderson Road and West Valley Forge Road. The Media Communications Advisory Board proposed this project to the Public Information Office/UMGA-TV in 2014. It was approved unanimously by the Board of Supervisors. The sign will display information from township departments as well as the Farmers Market and the Upper Merion Senior Service Center. Please bear with us as we work out the kinks in the weeks ahead. Kindly direct any questions to the Public Information Office.

The Public Information Office is working with the Information Technology Department to design a more user-friendly township website that allows visitors to find what they need more quickly. In the meantime, visit www.umtownship.org periodically to see what improvements have been made. The red navigational bar on the front page displays the word DEPARTMENT. You will notice that the home pages of each department are customized and easy to navigate. A SOCIAL MEDIA button is now available to direct you to a page that includes all of our departmental social media sites. A large flat screen television monitor (see rendering below) will be mounted inside the township building this winter season so that the public will see our postings LIVE!

Businesses and business owners in Upper Merion Township are required to: Obtain a Business Privilege/Mercantile License every year (Annual Renewal), File Business Privilege/Mercantile Tax and Local Services Tax Returns. Individuals are required to file with the Township if they use the schedules and/or forms listed below: Schedule C tax form (Income from a Sole Proprietorship). Schedule E tax form (Income from Rental Property Residential/Commercial). (Any other Partnership Gross receipts other than rental). "A Community Of Service" Thank you to all who participated in the th 14 Annual Senior Fall Fling, which kicked off the fall season on Thursday, September 24, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, in the Pavilion at the Court in King of Prussia. More than 250 people attended. Upper Merion's Public Information Office, UMGA-TV, and administration staff assisted in making this year's event memorable! Fling committee members (Mary McCree, Emma Carson, Eileen Rodrique, Terry Stevens, June Dolan, Frank Dube and Dottie Wisniewski) paid tribute to service organizations where members voluntarily meet to perform charitable works through service above themselves. Four non-profit organizations were chosen to be featured. Neighborhood Meals on Wheels: a nonprofit organization, which has served the people of the Upper Merion School District for over 40 years. Volunteers deliver hot and cold meals each week day, 52 weeks a year to those who are homebound and/or convalescing. Mission: Volunteers who can drive. Flu Shots Montgomery County is giving out free Flu Shots to all residents on Tuesday, October 27, from 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM at the Township building in Freedom Hall (sign-up in the Valley Forge room on that day).

UMT Wins Platinum - Again! Upper Merion was recognized at the 2015 GVF 6th Annual Sustainable Awards Breakfast on September 14, at the Radisson Hotel in King of Prussia. The township has earned the highest level of achievement for the past 5 years. The sustainability breakfast is an opportunity to recognize regional organizations for their outstanding achievements in implementing programs that promote commuting alternatives for their employees and for the community.

Safety Tips for the Autumn Season As the air turns cooler and leaves drop, remember to keep a few important fall safety tips in mind. With proper precautions and safety awareness, your family can enjoy the crisp autumn weather while avoiding some of the seasonal dangers. When the weather turns cold, most people spend more time inside their homes using fireplaces, furnaces, and heaters to keep warm. There's nothing quite as cozy as a fire, but it presents some safety hazards. Keep these tips in mind: Service Your Furnace Before the cold autumn and winter weather sets in, be sure to call your heating and cooling company to service your furnace. A specialist should inspect the furnace to make sure it is in working order. Keep all flammable materials away from your furnace, including: clothing, paint products, toxic materials, and cardboard. Use Fireplaces Safely Keep the fire in its proper place by using a fireplace screen to contain sparks. Never leave a burning fire unattended and make sure the fire is completely out before going to bed. Have your chimney checked for leaks and blockages. A professional company should check your fireplace. Use Caution with Space Heaters A space heater can be an effective way to warm up a chilly room, but you must read the instructions first. If your space heater requires venting, make sure it is vented, facing outdoors. Never use your stove or

oven to heat your home; only use space heaters approved for this purpose. Always allow at least three feet of empty area around space heaters. Prevent Leaf Fires Do not park your vehicles on a pile of leaves. Hot catalytic converters, tailpipes, on the undercarriage of most vehicles can easily cause a fire. Only park your vehicle in clear areas of the streets and in driveways. Reconsider Leaf and other Yard Waste Burning Open burning of leaves and other yard waste is prohibited in Upper Merion Township. The Township does provide seasonal pickups for these materials. Contact the Township's Public Works Office at 610-265-2606 for the leaf and yard waste pickup schedule. Exercise Candle Caution Candles are a great way to give a room that warm glow, but they can also cause fires. Never leave candles burning if you go out or when you sleep, and keep your candles away from pets, kids, and combustible fabrics. Install Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarms Tis' the season to install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on every level of your home and outside the bedrooms. Test your alarm devices monthly. Change Alarm Batteries Change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms when you turn

Make and Practice Your Home Escape Plan Make a home escape plan for the whole family before a fire starts. Practice with the whole family twice a year. Use Portable Generators Safely Always use generators outdoors, away from doors, windows and vents. Never use generators in homes, garages, basements, crawl spaces, or other enclosed or partially enclosed areas, even with ventilation due to carbon monoxide hazard. 2015 Leaf Collection Schedule (October 26 - December 3) The composting program is completely natural; and no Guidlines & Procedures chemicals are used. During leaf collection season: Zone 1, Zone 2 and Zone 3 have two (2) leaf collections scheduled per zone. Staff removes leaves that are placed at the curb and/or in biodegradable paper bags. Leaves and bags must be curbside on the Monday of the scheduled week of pick-up. If you do not have your leaves ready and/or you miss the first scheduled removal, a second removal has been arranged for your Zone. You may view the schedule during Leaf Collection season. If you still have leaves after the second scheduled removal, please place them in a paper biodegradable bag and bring them to the Compost Site for processing. As stated in the "Guidelines" below, the leaves are composted into mulch and provided free for township residents. After Leaf Collection season, staff will convert the leaf collection trucks into snow and ice maintenance trucks. In the event inclement weather (snow, sleet and/or ice) occurs during leaf collection season, equipment used to remove leaves will be converted and adjustments will be made to the Leaf Collection Program. Guidelines For more than 40 years, the Upper Merion Township Public Works Department annual leaf collection program has collected more than 1,500 tons of leaves each year and composts them on a five-acre site on West Beidler Road.

Residents may deposit their leaves directly at the Compost Site between 7:00 AM and 3:00 PM on weekdays; 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Saturdays; and 12:00 noon to 4:00 PM on Sundays. (Compost Site Address: 694 Beidler Road, King of Prussia, PA) Leaves and bags should be curbside on the Monday of the week scheduled for a particular neighborhood. Leaf piles can be two feet wide and should not block stormwater drains. Weather permitting, a final sweep of all neighborhoods will be held in December after the scheduled pick-ups Procedures To be collected, leaves must be raked to the curb or be in biodegradable paper (not plastic) leaf bags along your curb. Paper bags are available at your local home center. Leaves and bags must be curbside on the Monday of the scheduled week of pick-up. Township employees and equipment are not permitted on private property for collections. Leaves or bags will not be collected if leaves contain sticks, stones, or other debris. Please make sure leaf piles are no more than two feet wide. Keep stormwater drains, inlets, roadways, and sidewalks free from leaf piles. Keep trees trimmed to 11 feet above edge of pavement to allow for the passage of collection trucks. Leaf and grass burning are prohibited.

Question: Where should I dump the leaves I rake if I don't want to put them in the trash? Answer: Arborist Barley VanClief, who works with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Tree Tenders and serves on Upper Merion's Shade Tree Commission, suggests raking decomposed leaves into planting beds and under trees as mulch to nourish the soil. You can speed decomposition by shredding them first with a leaf shredder, by running over them several times with a mulching mower, or by placing them in a large trash can and using a string trimmer. Shredded leaves heaped in a pile or container gradually break down to leaf mold, which is high in calcium and magnesium, and holds 3-5 times its weight in water. The benefits are: fertilizes the lawn and prevents weed germination; protects tender garden plants from extreme cold; and replenishes nutrients in the soil. VanClief calls this fall activity "leaf management," because the best practice is NOT to dispose fallen leaves. And remember, if you don't do "Leaf-cycling" yourself, the Township will do it for you.

Congratulations BCA Recipients Recipients of the Board of Community Assistance (BCA) grants and scholarships were recognized on June 23,at the Radisson Hotel at the Valley Forge Casino Resort. The BCA was established by the Board of Supervisors and Valley Forge Casino Resort to provide grants to organizations that serve Upper Merion residents and to award scholarships for high school seniors from Upper Merion Township who are continuing their education. More than $145,000 was granted to 68 recipients: 38 community organizations and 30 scholarships.
