Message from the Township Manager - William Martin It has been a very busy year for the Township: We recently wrapped up the Paoli Road Feasibility Study which provided a starting point to continue the redevelopment and investment in accessibility throughout Tredyffrin.

We are so fortunate to live and work in a Township that provides the quality of life we have come to enjoy. The Board of Supervisors continues to provide thoughtful leadership in maintaining a high level of service for the residents of Tredyffrin Township in a fiscally responsible manner and our staff's commitment to providing these services is second to none.

Tredyffrin Township

The Township secured funding to install adaptive traffic signals from Route 252 to Plank Avenue on Route 30 in Paoli. This will help improve the flow of traffic in the Paoli area. Construction should begin in 2015. The Chester Valley Trail opened this spring and has been used by thousands of pedestrians and bikers. The 2014 road paving program should be underway by the date of this publication.

There are a lot of great things happening in Tredyffrin Township this Fall. From Community Day th celebrating the 10 anniversary of Wilson Farm Park, all sorts of great events at the Tredyffrin Public Libraries, to the Paoli Blues Festival and Historic House Tour - you're sure to find the one that's perfect for you. There is something for everyone this Fall and throughout the year. Enjoy our wonderful parks, visit our libraries, and shop with our local merchants. Many of them help support this newsletter publication as well as other events in the Township throughout the year. Message from the Finance Director - Joseph DiRocco In today's ever-changing world, budgeting is no longer something we only worry about in the Fall; it has become a year-round event. As each month closes, we constantly analyze and consider the impact that all revenues and expenses have on the Township budget. But, revenues and expenses Joseph DiRocco - Finance Director aren't the only things to consider as we develop a balanced budget; we also need to consider the Township's past results which allow us to see what trends are developing, both good and bad. One of the first steps in the budget process is completion of the prior year's audit. For the 2015 Budget, we will use the results from the Township's 2013 Audit as a starting point. Fiscal year 2013 produced strong results, adding $488,728 to the fund balance. The large increase in fund balance in 2013 is mainly attributed to Real Estate Transfer Taxes from the sale of some large commercial properties. Some of the other factors considered while developing the budget are the economy, current year forecasts, and short-term and longterm goals of the Township.

As the 2015 Budget process moves forward, here are some important dates to keep in mind: August 18: Mid-Year Budget Review given by Finance Director November 5: Presentation of 2015 Preliminary Budget given by Township Manager and Staff November 17: Adoption of the 2015 Preliminary Budget by Board of Supervisors November: Budget Open House Township Staff and members of the Board's Finance Committee will meet with the public to discuss the proposed budget December 15: Adoption of the 2015 Budget by the Board of Supervisors If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at jdirocco@tredyffrin.org

Winter Recreation Program Registration Information 2014-2015 For: Girls and boys grades kindergarten through 6th grade (pre-school children are not permitted to attend this program) Dates: Saturday mornings, from Thanksgiving until the end of February. Time: 9:00am - 1:00pm (a labeled snack is recommended if your child will be staying all morning) Location: Valley Forge Elementary School Activities: The children may select from a variety of activities, small group games (board games, puzzles, etc.), large group games (dodge ball, bean bag tag, basketball, floor hockey etc.), rock climbing, rope swing, scooters, and jump ropes. This program is financed in part by a grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. Tredyffrin Township would also like to acknowledge the Tredyffrin Township Foundation for Parks and Recreation for their sponsorship of this program. All fees collected for this program will be donated to the Foundation to offset a portion of the costs of Winter Recreation. Registration Information All children must pre-register for Winter Recreation prior to November 22, 2014. Registration form is available on the Township website at www.Tredyffrin.org

Our curricula are free to Tredyffrin residents and their crews. Crew members do not need to be Tredyffrin residents. The Basics of Production curriculum is mandatory for every Tredyffrin Township Television (TTTV) producer and crew member and is a required prerequisite for other curricula. Every taping, according to the physical demands of the production, requires a certain number of certified crew members to safely produce a show. At least 3 Basics of Video Production-certified crew members, one of which must be the (Tredyffrin resident) Lead

Certified Producer, are recommended to produce a favorable three-camera studio taping.

Classes are held at the Greenwood Studio in the Tredyffrin Township Municipal Building at 1100 DuPortail Road in Berwyn.

The number of crew members required for any field production will be determined by the studio manager at the time of the equipment loan. The basic determining factor will always be how many trained people are necessary to keep talent, crew and equipment safe.

Students may attend either the Wednesday evening or the Saturday class (that selection may change week to week).

Only Basics of Video Production-certified crew members may use our facilities and equipment.

Space may be limited to first registrants. Classes may be cancelled if attendance is low.

Tredyffrin Folks are the Best! Ever thought about what it takes to run your Township? You probably know about the Board of Supervisors, the Township Manager and his Department Heads, The Superintendent of Police and his police department, the Public Works crews who you see out on the roads in the winter and in the parks in the nice weather, and the Administrative staff who help you out every day. But did you ever think about those other authorities, boards and commissions (ABCs) that provide behind-the-scenes work about which you might not even be aware? These are groups of volunteers who willingly donate their time, expertise, and energy in service to Tredyffrin. These are your neighbors, parents of children who attend school with yours, and members of your church. As you see them around town at the grocery store, at the library, or up in Paoli, stop and say hello, shake their hand, and say, "Thank you." Let's take a look at those ABCs in Tredyffrin. Board of Supervisors Members of the Board of Supervisors serve four-year staggered terms and they are the Township's decision making body of seven elected officials. Supervisors establish Township policy, initiate and adopt ordinances and resolutions relating to Township business, determine the rates for both real estate and other taxes they are empowered to use, and set both capital and operating budgets. Supervisors provide policy for police and fire protection, planning and zoning, street maintenance and snow removal, sewers, libraries, parks and recreation, regulate land use development and building construction.

Supervisors also appoint key Township officials and residents to Township Authorities, Board and Commissions.

Tredyffrin's Board of Supervisors are Michael Heaberg, Chairman, Kristen Mayock, Vicechair, John DiBuonaventuro, Mark Freed, Paul Olson, Evelyn Richter, and Murph Wysocki.

Library Board of Trustees Members of the Library Board of Trustees serve three-year staggered terms and they determine policy for the Tredyffrin Public Library in Strafford and its branch in Paoli. They make decisions concerning staffing and funding of Library operations. You should stop by and see the facilities, browse the 77,000 volumes in the Strafford location and an additional 20,000 in Paoli, use the computer, tap into the internet access. You can sit and read the paper or your favorite magazine and borrow records, cassettes and CDs. Environmental Advisory Council Members of the Environmental Advisory Council (EAC) serve three-year staggered terms and are dedicated to exploring and promoting environmental initiatives in the Township. They work at the direction of the Board of Supervisors and as an extension of Township staff to research environmental issues and funding sources; to advise Township staff and supervisors; to sponsor environmental education; to partner with Township residents, outside agencies, and organizations with similar interests; and to coordinate environmental projects. Tredyffrin's EAC members are Charles Cutshall, Curtis Heckelman, Todd Kantorczyk, Leslie Labess, Elizabeth Mercogliano, Mary Westervelt, Park Board Liaison Careen Wright, Planning Commission Liaison Scott Growney, and Board of Supervisors Liaison Evelyn Richter. Historical Commission Members of the Historical Commission (HC) serve three-year overlapping terms and they advise the Township on matters concerning the preservation of historic resources. Tredyffrin's HC members are Renee Bomgardner, Heather DiGiacomo, Jean Dixon, Matthew Forester, Glenna Keene,

Municipal Authority Members of the Municipal Authority serve five-year staggered terms and the purpose of the Authority is to provide funding for sanitary sewer and highway projects in the Township through sales of Municipal Bonds. The Municipal Authority owns all the sanitary sewer facilities and leases them to the Township. Tredyffrin's Municipal Authority members are Samuel Becker, Charles Bennett, David Mackey, Barry Mellor, John Meyers, Stanford Nishikawa, Chris Patton, and Board of Supervisors Liaison Michael Heaberg.

Park and Recreation Board Members of the Park and Recreation Board serve five-year over-lapping terms and consist of nine volunteers, seven appointed by Tredyffrin Supervisors and two by the Tredyffrin-Easttown School District. The Board oversees the acquisition, development and use of park sites and supervises park activities. The mission of the Parks & Rec Board is to enhance the quality of life for residents of all ages through parks, recreation programs, and open space preservation. Tredyffrin's Park and Recreation Board members are Bryan Baynard, Elisabeth Brake, Troy Logan, Elizabeth Mercogliano (from School Board), Sean Moir, James Pettia (from School Board), Jack Trimmer, Careen Wright, Denise Waite, and Board of Supervisors Liaison John DiBuonaventuro. Pension Plan Trustees The Trustees oversee the management of the Township's pension plans. Tredyffrin's Pension Trustees are Bert Dalby, Warren Hyams, Richard Veith, and Board of Supervisors Liaison Murph Wysocki. Planning Commission Members of the Planning Commission (PC) serve four-year terms and are authorized to prepare, update and oversee implementation of the Comprehensive Plan, Subdivision & Land Development Ordinance, and Zoning Ordinance, and to review land development and subdivision applications. development decisions by the Planning Commission are final, while the Board of Supervisors has final approval authority on all subdivision applications. Regular meetings, usually held on the third Thursday of the month, are formal meetings where applications are heard and decisions or recommendations are made. The public is welcome to attend and comment on any matter on the agenda. Tredyffrin's Planning Commission members are David Biddison, Scott Growney, Reeves Lukens, Robert O'Leary, William Rountree, Victoria Snyder, Edward Sweeney, and Board of Supervisors Liaison Kristen Mayock. Zoning Hearing Board Members of the Zoning Hearing Board serve three-year staggered terms and consist of three members and three alternate members. Appeals for relief from decisions of the Zoning Officer and/or requirements in the Zoning Ordinance are handled by the Zoning Hearing Board. This is a quasi-judicial body whose decisions are not subject to the approval of the supervisors. Zoning Hearing Board meetings, which are open to the public, are usually held on the fourth Thursday of the month. Tredyffrin's Zoning Hearing Board members are Arnold Borish, Nicholas Deenis, Daniel McLaughlin; the alternate members are Neill Kling, Tara LaFiura and Jennifer Kleppe; and Board of Supervisors Liaison Mark Freed. The 10th Annual Historic House Tour

Hosted by the Tredyffrin Historic Preservation Trust, the muchanticipated 10th Annual Historic House Tour will take guests behind the scenes of eight historic and breathtaking properties on Saturday, September 27th, from 12 - 5 pm. Held annually since 2004, the purpose of the historic tour is to foster appreciation of historic buildings and the need for their preservation. The tour highlights history, architectural splendors, and shares elegant examples of beauty, warmth and historic preservation. To celebrate its 10th anniversary, the 2014 tour will feature six majestically

diverse historic homes by acclaimed Chester County architect R. Brognard Okie (1875-1945) including Hillside, his personal 18th century residence in Berwyn. In addition to private residences, the tour will also include the Great Valley Mill and St. Peter's Church in the Great Valley, where visitors will enjoy Okie's wonderful interior design work. Okie was noted for his Colonial-Revival houses and his sensitive restorations of historic buildings. The tour offers visitors a rare opportunity to tour beautiful private residences featuring outstanding historic preservation, restoration, and interior design and landscaping styles. The featured properties span 18th, 19th and 20th Centuries. Visitors on the selfguided tour are invited inside for a glimpse of what it is like to live, work, and worship in these unique historic structures. Each property has generations of original stories to tell. "We are excited about the tour's 10th anniversary celebration," commented Pattye Benson, Trust President and Chair of the annual house tour. "I am grateful to the historic homeowners who, by sharing their extraordinary homes, allow us to better understand the significant and unique history of our community. The featured properties are prime examples of Okie's architectural legacy as well as the character of i n d i v i d u a l neighborhoods. With the cooperation of generous homeowners, many volunteers, supportive individuals and corporate sponsors, you can experience the buildings that make this area distinctive and beautiful."

Paoli Blues Fest 2014: Celebrating Six Years of Music and Fun On Saturday, October 4th, Paoli will be hummin', singin' and swayin' to the Blues! Organized by a group of dedicated community volunteers, the Paoli Blues Fest and Street Fair - held every Fall on the first Saturday of October - is a rockin' event! The Paoli Blues Fest is now the largest annual blues festival in the greater Philadelphia region (over 15,000 music lovers of all ages attended in 2013), attracting visitors from a large geographic area, including New York, New Jersey and Delaware in addition to Philadelphia, Montgomery, Delaware and Chester counties. The festival will be held from 12-6 pm on an outdoor stage in the heart of Paoli, at the Paoli Village Shoppes, located on Lancaster Avenue across from the Paoli Train Station. There's plenty of free parking available , (look for the signs). The Paoli Blues Fest features a main stage with continuous musical performances featuring the finest professional blues bands from the tristate area plus new, emerging artists

performing in the blues style appealing to a broad range of tastes and ages. Big Band Theory, an orchestra style group of 15-20 musicians playing brass instruments, will kick-off the Blues Fest at noon. Other blues bands performing include Blue Jay Slim, Russ Lambert, Deb Callahan Band, Blue Plate Special and Blues Biz. Set amidst raw-bonded guitar riffs and emotionally charged vocals, the Paoli Blues Fest represents a unique "homegrown" partnership between musicians, local merchants, community volunteers, and visitors to the festival. When you come to the Paoli Blues Fest, you'll find that it's more than just a concert. In addition to musical performances, the street fair provides a day of family fun featuring 100+ vendors, children's entertainment and activities, food vendors, and an outdoor beer and wine garden. The "free" concert gets great reviews for their entrance fee. For admission,

Out with a bang - Wahoo! As the season comes to an end and the asters and goldenrods are all but finished, many gardeners begin dreaming of the flowering delights that await them next spring. There are, however, many things to look forward to in the fall that are equally, if not more delightful than any flower in the garden. The obvious is the foliar collage of reds, yellows, and oranges that light up the forest. If spring and summer are all about flowers, truly, fall is all about trees. In addition, there are many plants that provide splashes of color with a remarkable display of fruits and berries. Winterberry Holly (red), American Beautyberry (lavender), and Snowberry (white) are a few of many

examples, but for the rest of this article, the focus will be on a plant that most people are not familiar with, but one that combines fall color with fall fruits…WAHOO! The Eastern Wahoo is a multi-stemmed shrub that can grow to be fifteen feet tall. The plant's maroon spring flowers are attractive, but too small to have much landscape impact. Instead, the Wahoo waits for fall to take its place in the limelight. By late summer, the flowers are replaced by striking, fourchambered, pinkish fruits that dangle down on short stalks. At first, these fruits are small, but they grow and turn dark pink as the season goes on. At the same time, the foliage changes in waves and is variable depending on the amount of sunlight the plant receives. Usually, the outer leaves will turn

bright red while others on the plant will be various shades of pink or even remain light green for a while. The combination of fall color and fall fruits makes for a dramatic late-season display. Tredyffrin Is Becoming a Bird Town! Tredyffrin Township is on the road to achieving Bird Town designation with A u d u b o n Pennsylvania! The Tredyffrin T o w n s h i p Environmental Advisory Council (EAC) began working on the application in January, 2014. The Builders' Club of Valley Forge Middle School raised $400 for the application fee, which will pay for signage, information, workshops, and guidance from Audubon as we move forward with making our township more birdfriendly. To learn more about Bird Town or the Backyard Bird Habitat Network, go to their website at http://pa.audubon.org. How does this fit with Township goals? A 2009 Resolution prepared by the Board of Supervisors and the EAC states a number of goals for the

greening of Tredyffrin Township, including improved green practices by Township government and municipal support services and "communicating the environmental vision and commitment to residents, businesses, and developers" in the Township. Birds are a part of the environment that we all love. Focusing on birds allows a way for the public to become informed about what makes for good habitat. Under the guidance of Audubon Pennsylvania, residents will learn new ways to reconnect with nature right on their own property. In addition, Jenkins Arboretum & Gardens will also have information at the Community Day event about useful plants for improving bird habitat.

Veterans Memorial "Bill, we need a permanent site for the WWI Memorial Stone." And so began the journey for Bill and Pat DeHaven to find a permanent place for a stone that had traveled the Easttown area for years to at least three sites. Bill, a retired Tredyffrin policeman who also served on the Board of Supervisors for a number a years, and his wonderful wife, Pat, brought together a group of local citizens to help in the effort. In the end, a permanent memorial was erected at the Berwyn SEPTA station with not only the WWI stone, but two new stones to commemorate those who have died in the service of their country from the TE school District since WWI. A Gold Star Mothers' Garden was also dedicated at the station to

the mothers of soldiers who lost their lives. Every year, this is the site of the Berwyn Village Christmas celebration. A second vets' memorial was erected in Wilson Farm Park near the rear entrance. At the center of this site is an eighty foot flag pole with a 20' x 38' Garrison Flag. The base is currently surrounded by a garden and lighting to ensure that the flag is properly illuminated during the night time hours. A major addition is planned for this site to include new walkways, gardens, and an area to display the names of every soldier who served from the surrounding area dating back to the French and Indian War in the 1750's, close to 300 years ago.

Once a year, the Veterans' Association of Easttown and Tredyffrin Townships conducts a 5K Run/Walk to raise funds to carry on its mission, which is to visually honor men and women from our area who have served their country in the military so that we can enjoy our privileges and freedom. The group, known unofficially as the Berwyn Vets, is not connected with any other veterans' organization so that control is strictly local. It is also able to prevent any political influence. Inspections and Permit Services After a summer season full of warmth, sun and our fair share of rain, most if not all barrier or privacy trees and shrubs have taken full advantage and have stretched their limbs and foliage with no bounds. And rightfully so. A common problem with this healthy new growth, however, is a tendency for this new growth to find its way into an adjacent property, right of way, and/or intersection. Slowly but surely, these limbs and leaves can begin to block potential vehicle or pedestrian traffic along streets and sidewalks, causing very unsafe conditions. Tredyffrin Township's Code Enforcement Department urges its residents to closely monitor plantings that border streets and sidewalks in an effort to stay ahead of these conditions and help prevent a potentially hazardous situation.

Below is an excerpt from Tredyffrin's Property Maintenance Ordinance for reference: § 149-5 Minimum requirements for building exterior and outside premises. A. Outside premises. All outside premises, whether occupied or vacant, shall be kept free of unsanitary conditions and of all nuisances and any hazards to the safety of occupants, pedestrians and other persons utilizing or exposed to the premises. Unsanitary conditions, nuisances and hazards include, but are not limited to, the following for any outside premises: (1) Vegetation, defined as: (a) Excessive weeds. (b) Hedges, trees, shrubs or other vegetation that obstruct the approach sight distance of any highway, street, driveway, traffic signal, traffic signal sign or crosswalk. (c) Dead and dying trees and limbs or other natural growth which, by reason of rotting or deteriorating conditions or storm damage, constitute a hazard to persons in the vicinity thereof. Trees shall be kept pruned and trimmed to prevent such conditions. For any additional questions, please call 610-644-1400 and ask for the Senior Code Enforcement Official.

Tredyffrin Township Development Update There's been a great deal of development activity in the Township in the past year. CrossPoint, located at 550 Swedesford Road, combined two former buildings into one state-of-the-art 272,000 square foot building that is now 85% leased. Tenants include Teleflex and Rovi, to name just a few. Sage Assisted Senior Living Facility in Berwyn is set to open sometime in the latter part of 2015. The 80 unit apartment building is being built on the former Jimmy Duffy catering facility site on Route 30. The Wayne Glen proposal by developer Arcadia Land Development Company continues to work its way through the Conditional Use process. The proposed 108-unit residential development and 10-acre commercial lot proposal was originally submitted in April of 2013. The Chesterbrook Shopping Center was purchased by a group of developers. The former 122,000 square foot retail complex has been proposed to remove a substantial portion of the building, keep roughly 31,000 square feet of retail, and build 123 townhomes all within walking distance of Wilson Farm Park and the Chester Valley Trail. The Village Square development was approved last year by the Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors. The 30-unit townhouse development, located on South Valley Road, should be great for downtown Paoli. This could bring new shoppers to the District and could spur new activity in the area. Fire Company News: Berwyn Fire Co. The Berwyn Fire Company (BFC) is hosting their annual Turkey Raffle this year on November 19th at 7 pm at the firehouse located at 23 Bridge Avenue in Berwyn. This is a fantastic, fun community event and supports one of the busiest and most dedicated Fire and EMS departments on the Main Line. Residents will have the opportunity to win turkeys and other prizes. Many turkeys are also donated to families in need. There will be lots of free food and prizes at the Turkey Raffle. As part of Paoli Hospital's Director of Injury Prevention and Outreach program, Paoli EMS and Andy Worth worked with several troops from the Girl Scouts in Chester, Bucks, Delaware, Montgomery and Berks Counties to help them achieve their Jr. First Aid Badge. In order to achieve this badge, the scouts must: Learn the first steps to take in an emergency Talk to First Responders

EMS News Led by Captain Andy Worth, 2013 was a productive, busy year for the Paoli EMS team. Most recently, Paoli Fire Company received a Lucas CPR Device through the EMS Council. The Lucas Device assists EMS team members with CPR events. Modern research shows that strong continuous CPR has the best result in return of spontaneous circulation in cardiac arrest patients. CPR can be an event that fatigues individuals very quickly,

Recycling 101 Reduce, Reuse, Recycle is a common mantra echoed throughout the environmental and sustainability communities. And while each of the "R's" plays its own distinct role in reducing the amount of materials we consume and eventually send to landfills, recycling is perhaps the simplest and most convenient of the three. It is also the only one of the three that is required by law. Pennsylvania's Municipal Waste Planning, Recycling and Waste Reduction Act of 1988 (Act 101) requires, among other things, that municipalities implement recycling programs. This program is outlined in Chapter 168 of the Tredyffrin Township Code. For Tredyffrin Township residents, recycling is as simple as separating the materials and placing them at your curb for pick up by your (privatelycontracted) hauler. In 2012, Tredyffrin Township residents and businesses properly disposed of more than 4,200 tons of recyclable materials! The benefits of such a simple act can be enormous and far-reaching. Below are just a few of the most tangible benefits of recycling:

Environmental: Conserves limited natural resources that are extracted to create new products, leaving more for future generations. Limits the amount of debris that ends up in landfills (which saves precious space) and incinerators (which decreases the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere). Reduces the amount of debris, particularly plastic, that makes its way to our oceans and natural areas which can wreak havoc on wildlife, enter our food chain, and pollute parks, beaches, other habitats. Energy: Reduces the amount of energy used by Industry to extract resources to create new products from "virgin" materials. For example, recycling one aluminum can will save 95% of the energy required to make the same amount of aluminum from "virgin" sources. For each can recycled, enough energy is conserved to run a television or computer for three hours.

Economic: Creates jobs (local, regional, state and beyond), including those related to collection/hauling, sorting, processing, and even brokering the recycled (raw) materials to companies who use them to create new products. Nationwide, the recycling and reuse industry consists of approximately 56,000 establishments that employ over 1.1 million people and generate an annual payroll of nearly $37 billion and gross over $236 billion in annual revenues. Supplies industries with more cost effective raw materials (recycled vs. virgin) from which to make new products. These cost savings are, in turn, passed on to the consumer. Saves transportation costs while boosting the local economy. Most recyclables are recycled/processed on a more local/regional scale than they are created, which funnels money into the local economy.

Autumn is almost upon us! Football parties, Halloween and holidays are quickly approaching and if your dog has any habits that may be problematic or bothersome, now is the time to work on them! With all of the fun fall events, it is important to keep your furry family member in mind for their comfort and safety. Many dogs have learned to overreact to the sound of a doorbell or door knock, leading to uncomfortable door greetings and potential escapes. This behavior can be problematic if you plan to have friends and family visit for a party or meal. It adds an extra layer of stress to what should be an enjoyable evening. Rude door behavior, such as barking or lunging at the door when people visit, is extremely common and a highly reinforced behavior. From the dog's point of view, every time a delivery man or mailman approaches your door, they are a possible intruder and require immediate attention. Your dog does not realize that those individuals were scheduled to leave regardless of your dog's reaction. In their mind, they have just saved you from a potential threat because the person does leave while your pet is throwing a fit or behaving poorly. Thus the behavior is reinforced. While you probably can't ask every person coming to your home to act as a training tool (people have places to go and things to do after all), you can prepare your dog to behavior more appropriately when they hear the doorbell or knocker. You have probably already taught your dog a variety of verbal cues without you even realizing that you have. Remember that your dog does not naturally speak English, but they have learned by association that "sit" means putting their bottom on the floor. They have also learned associations that you have not explicitly taught them, such as the doorbell brings potential intruders to protect you from or friends to jump on and greet. It is your job to use the doorbell as a cue for a different behavior. Just as your dog has 24

going into their crate. Do this routine a few times a day until your dog is sprinting to their crate at the sound of the bell. Now you can start to wean out the treat that is waiting in the crate and only reward your dog after they have entered the crate. The next time an unplanned door bell ring occurs, your dog will hopefully run to their crate. You should follow and reward your dog still and even potentially close the door or give a "stay" cue, allowing you to answer the door as needed without a dog overreacting at your entranceway. You have now changed the meaning of the doorbell for your dog and ended the problematic behavior of poor door etiquette. You can greet your guests and continue on with your plans without worrying about an overprotective dog, escaping dog, etc.

There are plenty of options for what your dog could do when they hear someone at the door. One option is to send your dog to their crate or their bed at the sound of a doorbell (you can substitute a knock if that fits your home better). The easiest way to begin training would be with two people: one to ring the bell and the other to train the dog. Start by having one person outside by the door and one person ready with treats or another high value reward (cheese, pieces of hot dog are great rewards!). Person A will ring the bell followed immediately by Person B running over to the predetermined location, such as a crate, and toss in a tasty treat. Person B should not say anything, as you want your dog to associate the bell with a location based on the reward -- not a word with the location. Your dog will probably still bark and get worked up by the door, but unlike past experiences, no one is going to come in or respond. After a few moments your dog will probably get mildly confused or bored and come see what Person B is doing. That's when they will find their tasty reward. Person B can give them a few more rewards for hanging out in their crate then release them. Repeat this game of Person A ringing the bell and Person B rewarding the dog for

If you do not have a helper to ring the bell for you, consider scheduling a regular training party in the guise of football or movie night. You can invite a few friends over for a football game or movie (make sure it is airing on TV so that you have regular commercial breaks) and use them to help you train your dog. Of course, you can pay them in the form of food and drinks. Football games and movies that are airing on TV have fairly regular commercial breaks that you can use as training trials. Simply ask all of your friends to walk outside at the start of a commercial break and have them each ring the bell for you while you train following the directions above. You can act as Person B and have your friends ring the bell while you reward your dog at the appropriate location. As an added bonus, your friends can walk over and greet or feed your dog, as well. This allows extra rewarding for your dog and it's away from the door! Fall is a great time to begin working with your dog on indoor etiquette. Summer warmth is fading and many social activities begin to move inside, so it is important to ensure that your dog is as happy to have visitors as you are! Happy Training! Laughter is the Best Medicine Laughter is the best medicine. We've all heard the saying, but I've found there is a lot of truth to that simple sentence. In 2004, when my mother had her first stroke and my father clearly exhibited signs of diminishing mental capacity, my sisters and I were in shock. How could all these changes be happening so rapidly? Dad was calling my husband every night asking the same questions about his computer. Mom, who battled severe rheumatoid arthritis with admirable will, was having difficulty managing tasks that used to be routine for her. Our wonderful parents' active retirement in Florida was severely impeded with on-going health issues. Situations like this come up for families all too regularly.

Whether it is a parent, a spouse or even a child, these issues change our lives dramatically. Needless to say, laughter was not high on my sisters' and my priority list.

Fortunately, a good friend talked to me about going through a similar situation with her mother. Her mother taught her a valuable lesson in the course of her illness - laugh as often as possible. When things happen, even difficult and trying situations, try to find the humor in it. My sisters, my parents and I did just that. We were not disrespectful, and we certainly did not laugh when serious changes occurred, but we did find humor and were all able to laugh at some of the situations that happened over the next five years. Keeping our laughter to situations, not the person, kept us sane through the difficult times.
