Cyber Security Best Practices Wi-Fi Protection

Connecting to public Wi-Fi can bring several dangers when discussing the idea of Cyber Threats. Some of the dangers that come with connecting to a public Wi-Fi are the possible theft of personal information as well as cyber-attacks on businesses. Other potential dangers are unencrypted connections, packet sniffing/eavesdropping, potential malware, and also session hijacking. Connecting to public Wi-Fi doesn't help avoid Cyber Threats, but there are ways to make it much more secure. The use of a VPN helps keep your personal information secure rather than using public Wi-Fi. Using a VPN encrypts everything that you send and receive over a Wi-Fi network. Some Wi-Fi networks or websites you access may or may not support encryption, but a VPN will still encrypt everything. When you use a VPN, you connect to the VPN server over an encrypted connection, pushing everything you do through that server. The use of a VPN is a helpful process to avoiding Cyber Threats.

Security Awareness Training Taking the proper security awareness training to avoid cyber threats can be a huge help when trying to identify cyber threats. Some of the areas for security awareness training are training for avoiding blunders, training to increase security measures, and training to save organizational reputation. Security awareness training also helps boost morale as well as save time & money and giving people peace of mind. Mail Security Moving to remote working and working on the go, mail security is that much more important. There are several different aspects to mail security, spam filtering being one of them. Spam filtering has content filters which review the content inside of the messages to decide if they are genuine or spam. Another filter for mail security to avoid Cyber Threats is permission filtering. This ultimately restricts the sender to be approved by the recipient before accepting any correspondence. Header filtering and General-blacklist filtering are looking at the email header to identify infectious information and 8

A software firewall is a special type of computer software with the main purpose being to protect your computer and server from outside attempts to control or gain access. Benefits of a software firewall are that configuration is very easy and that it is flexible. stopping all emails that come from a known list of spammers respectively. Rulebased filtering is yet another way to improve mail security, avoiding cyber threat. It is filters that define a set of criteria and standards for identifying a particular message as a spam message. One last filtering that is used for improving mail security is challenge-response filtering. This type of filtering protects outbound spam message and requires permission before sending the message. Adaptive Threat Protection Adaptive threat protection allows for security professionals to know what happens when a file with malicious content is detected. There are several benefits when it comes to adaptive threat protection and antivirus software. Adaptive threat protection allows for early detection of security compromises and automatic response when a malicious event occurs. ATP can also prevent data theft and sabotage. Adaptive threat protection also quickly detects and protects against cybersecurity threats and attacks such as malware. Device Encryption Device encryption is the process of scrambling data into illegible code and making it indecipherable to anyone without a password/recovery key. The data is encoded using an encryption algorithm to turn it into an unreadable format (plaintext vs. ciphertext). There are two main types of encryption -- symmetric encryption and asymmetric encryption. Symmetric Encryption is a popular encryption technique that uses the same key for the encryption and decryption process. Asymmetric Encryption is a more secure form of encryption as it uses two keys, a public key and private key, for the encryption and decryption process. Firewalls Firewalls are used to help filter the traffic going to a computer. There are two main types of firewalls, those being a hardware firewall and a software firewall. A hardware firewall is a physical device much like a server that filters the traffic going to a computer. Some benefits of a hardware firewall are that it can be used to intelligently control the traffic that reaches your server. It can also be configured with specific rules for all traffic. What is black ice? Watch for this winter road hazard!

Many drivers are unaware of this slippery winter road culprit. Here's how to prepare.

How can you protect yourself from this hidden winter hazard?

Thousands of injuries and fatalities occur every year from accidents on snowy or icy roads, according to the Federal Highway Administration. Many drivers are unaware of a common culprit in many of these crashes - black ice. So what is black ice? It is a transparent glaze that forms without bubbles, allowing it to easily blend into the surface of the roads. Black ice is most likely to form when there is a sudden temperature drop, such as in the early morning and evening hours. Common problem areas are bridges, overpasses, and shaded areas of the road. These areas have much colder surfaces that rapidly freeze when air moisture makes contact - especially if they're near lakes or rivers.

How to prepare for winter driving.

Use these tips to prepare your vehicle for driving on black ice or unexpected icy conditions: Winter Tires. Switch out your standard tires to winter tires once the temperatures start to drop. If your vehicle is regularly exposed to driving in snowy and icy conditions, the grip and handling provided by these weather-specific tires will be better than all-season tires. Slow Down. When conditions exist for an increased possibility of black ice, exhibit caution by driving slower than the posted speed limit and extending your braking distance. This could give you more time to react calmly if you're caught on black ice.

Ways to react when you encounter black ice.

If you're caught driving on black ice, use these tips to maneuver past the problem area: Do nothing. Avoid making sudden moves or turning the wheel. Smoothly lift your foot off the accelerator and glide across the ice in a straight line until you find traction.

Shift. If possible, slowly shift to a lower gear for added control. Brake wisely. If you begin to skid, firmly press on your brakes to activate the anti-lock brake system (ABS). Or, if you don't have ABS, pump the brakes gently. Avoid spinout. If your front end is sliding, steer in the opposite direction of the skid; if the back end is sliding, steer in the same direction. Look toward where you want to go. If you look where you think you might crash, then you might inadvertently veer the car in that direction.

Learn possible warning signs of black ice.

When favorable conditions are present, be on high alert. Black ice looks a lot like wet blacktop. Other indicators include: Absence of water spray on a seemingly wet road

What is electronic stability control? When cars slip on frozen roads in the winter, drivers can get a little help from the stability control system. Sometimes drivers experience a loss in the stability of their cars while driving due to icy road conditions, by turning too quickly at a high speed or by trying to avoid a hazard on the road. Now they can get a little help maintaining control, thanks to the electronic stability control (ESC), a standard feature in all vehicles under 10,000 pounds since 2012.

How ESC works. ESC works in tandem with your vehicle's other safety features, including the antilock braking system and traction control. Using sensors and a microcomputer, the ESC monitors the direction the vehicle is headed and its steering wheel position. When the two do not match up, the ESC works to correct under-and over-steering by applying the brakes to one or more of the wheels and, in some cases, reducing the engine throttle to adjust the direction the vehicle is heading.

Lifesaving technology. ESC is designed to prevent single-vehicle crashes that result from loss of control at high speeds or on icy roads; it is not intended to stop small fender-benders. This technology has been a standard feature in cars manufactured in the United States for some years now. As a result, the risk of fatal accidents due to rollover or instability has been reduced. Some stats show that vehicles with ESC technology have 32% less single-car accidents, and 58% less roll-over incidents. Stability Control Systems (ESC) and Traction Control Systems (TCS) It is important to know that ESC and TCS are two different systems, and ESC can't work without a Traction Control System. Per Autoevolution: “TCS only limits wheel slippage, whereas ESC also prevents lateral skidding, thus maintaining the car's trajectory.” Vehicles that have ESC technology allow the driver to disable this function - usually with a switch or button. It is recommended that you leave the ESC engaged unless your vehicle is stuck and you need more traction.

10 Toxic Household Items That Can Poison Your Pets

In our homes there are many items that seem normal to us but can cause our pets a lot of harm when ingested. As a pet owner you never want your furry friends to be harmed. To prevent any potential occurrences of them eating toxic household items you need to be both aware of which items they should not eat and also how to store things properly, so your pet does not get access. Here are ten common toxic household items that can harm your pets. 1. Chocolate It's common knowledge that chocolate is bad for pets, but do you know why? Theobromine and caffeine are the main toxic components in chocolate (also coffee beans and cocoa beans). The amounts of each vary depending on the type of chocolate (i.e., milk, unsweetened baking, or semisweet chocolates). The main signs referable to the heart and central nervous system: · nervousness/anxiety · excitable behavior · tremors · seizures and coma due to CNS stimulation · high blood pressure · a slowed or increased heart rate · heart arrhythmias, which may be manifested as disorientation, weakness, collapse, and loss of consciousness · vomiting and diarrhea can also occur The most important things for owners to do when a pet ingests chocolate (coffee beans or cocoa beans) are: · to estimate how much was ingested, · to bring packaging to the hospital so the type(s) of chocolate and relative doses of the toxic ingredients can be identified/estimated · to not delay the trip to the hospital. 2. Acetaminophen (Tylenol and other aspirin free pain medications) These common types of medication can be toxic to both dogs, and cats but cats are the most significantly affected and can have severe changes to the red blood cells (methemoglobinemia) that can result in brown/blue mucous membranes (gums). Cats can also have severe facial and paw swelling due to acetaminophen ingestion. 3. Batteries Make sure to store your batteries well and don't leave them out for your pet to potentially chew on. Ingestion of the whole battery as well as chewing on batteries can lead to clinical signs including pain, hypersalivation, oral inflammation and ulceration, vomiting, anorexia, and gastrointestinal ulceration and or bleeding due to battery acid exposure. X-rays should be taken to see if there are battery parts in the GI tract. Seek immediate veterinary 12

4. Bread Dough Baking bread? Be mindful of your pet getting a bite of the dough. Ingestion of bread dough can cause intestinal obstruction, vomiting, diarrhea, blindness, inability to walk, vocalization, change in behaviors and loss of consciousness. Bread dough will rapidly rise in the warm environment of the stomach and produce ethanol, which is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract causing the clinical signs. The prognosis is good if treated immediately by a veterinarian.

and diarrhea as well as gastric ulceration, bleeding and intestinal perforation. At high enough concentrations it can cause permanent kidney damage and affect the central nervous system leading to seizures, inability to walk, coma and death. Cats are twice as sensitive as dogs are due to a lack of an enzyme to help digest the medication. Treatment of the patient includes decontamination through emesis (inducing vomiting), prevention and treatment of gastric ulceration, renal failure and CNS effects. Common therapies will include giving activated charcoal, gastrointestinal protectants such as omeprazole, carafate, misoprostol, and IV fluid therapy. Blood will also be monitored to check kidney function as well. The prognosis is good if the patient is treated immediately after ingestion.

5. Cigarette Ingestion Think twice about letting cigarettes and tobacco products laying around your house if you have pets. Tobacco products contain nicotine, and cigarettes and cigars have varying degrees of nicotine in them. The butts themselves contain 25 percent of the total nicotine. Clinical signs develop quickly (15-30 minutes) and include hyperexcitablity, hypersalivation, fast breathing, diarrhea, and vomiting. Muscle weakness, twitching, collapse, coma, and death can occur at high enough doses. Animals seen ingesting any tobacco products or even several cigarette or cigar butts should present to a veterinarian for medical care and decontamination. 6. Grapes and Raisins Grapes are a bit of a mystery when it comes to toxicity - very little is known regarding the cause of grape toxicity in dogs. It is not dose-dependent, meaning that a small amount of grape ingestion could cause a serious problem in some dogs and some dogs can eat a large amount and never be affected. On presentation, your dog will likely have emesis (vomiting) induced and baseline kidney values measured. Most dogs will be admitted to the hospital for 48 hours of intravenous fluids. Prognosis varies based on when the patients presents to a veterinarian and the degree of sensitivity to grapes and raisins per patient. 7. Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and Naproxen (Aleve) Ingestion (Non-steroidal Antiinflammatory or NSAID) Another very common OTC medication that could potentially harm your pet. Ibuprofen is an over the counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory that is commonly used for aches and pains in people. 8. Mushrooms Mushrooms commonly found in the backyard, parks, and nature trails can be toxic and lethal to dogs. The most toxic poisonous mushroom family is the Amanita phalloides or death cap mushrooms. Clinical signs can include vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, bleeding disorders, excessive drooling, cardiac arrhythmias, liver failure and death. Clinical signs can occur as soon as 20 minutes after ingestion. Prognosis is variable depending on the type of mushroom ingested and quantity. 9. Toilet Tank Drop Ins/Toilet water Does your pet drink from the toilet bowl from time to time? Be mindful of using drop in products, as they are often are made of a corrosive cleaning agent. Due to the dilution of the toxin in the toilet tank and bowl the concentration is usually not very high. Typical clinical signs include gastrointestinal irritation which could include vomiting and diarrhea. 10. Xylitol Xylitol is a 5-carbon sugar alcohol found in many sugar-free gums, baked goods, desserts, some medications, vitamins, and toothpaste. Xylitol can be harmful to your pets. Clinical signs include vomiting, lethargy, hypoglycemia (low blood sugar episode) and fulminant liver failure. Due to the nature of xylitol ingestion, immediate presentation to the veterinarian for decontamination and observation is recommended for favorable outcome.

HEALTH & WELLNESS The best time to get a mammogram is now! Q: "Does it matter if I missed my mammogram last year due to the pandemic?” A lot of women did, according to Catherine D. Carruthers, MD, FACS, a Main Line Health breast surgeon and the medical director for the Barbara Brodsky Comprehensive Breast Center at Bryn Mawr Hospital, who says she's now seeing the impact of delayed and missed mammograms. The best time to get a mammogram, pandemic or not, she advises, is now. "A lot of patients are coming in with abnormal mammograms," says Dr. Carruthers, explaining that abnormal mammograms are not always an indication of cancer. However, Dr. Carruthers is seeing larger cancers and some of them "seem to be a bit more advanced," she believes, "more so than if we had caught them in 2020.” She's also seeing more cancers involving lymph nodes. Larger cancers that affect the lymph nodes often require more aggressive breast cancer treatment and more

frequently, the need for patients to receive chemotherapy. They might need more extensive radiation or sometimes even more extensive surgery than if they'd had their mammogram last year," says Dr. Carruthers. Best time to get a mammogram when there's breast cancer in your family? Ann Newman, 80, stays on top of her health with regular workouts, good eating and keeping stress down. With breast cancer in her family, Newman wasn't about to miss her yearly mammogram last year, regardless of the pandemic.

She now takes medication every day to prevent breast cancer from returning and she advises her friends and loved ones to stay on top of their breast screenings - and to catch up if needed. Newman made sure to share her story with a neighbor who was still carrying her mammogram prescription in her purse. "As soon as I got the diagnosis, I went to see her and told her the best time to get a mammogram is now. Don't mess with it. Just go - and so she did.” Scheduling a mammogram is easy at any of Main Line Health's 10 convenient health centers and hospital locations.

"In fact, they found a small tumor," she recalls. "Because it was small and not invasive, we came up with ten treatments, which was really very simple.”

No woman wants to be called back after having a mammogram, but when there is a suspicious finding additional imaging may be needed, usually an ultrasound or other mammography images. If this imaging also shows a suspicious finding, a biopsy is typically recommended, and a breast cancer nurse navigator meets with the patient. As a rule, patients with an abnormal diagnostic mammogram or a new breast lump are seen by a Main Line Health breast surgeon within 48 hours to determine the optimal biopsy approach.

Newman had breast surgery to remove the tumor, followed by a course of radiation.

How Can Overloaded Sanitary Sewers Cause Flooding In Your Home?

The water in an overloaded sewer flows at a higher level than normal. If the home has sanitary fixtures or floor drains that are below the higher overload level, water can flow backwards through the sanitary sewer lines into the basement or other low-lying areas of the home.

Section 715.1 of IPC (International Plumbing Code) states that any plumbing fixtures that are installed on a floor with an elevation below the elevation of the manhole cover of the next upstream manhole in the public sewer, such fixture shall be protected by a backflow preventer in the building drain or horizontal branch serving such fixture.

Such fixture connections might include washer hookups, water softener, backflushing lines, toilets, shower stalls, sinks and illegally connected sump pumps and floor drains. How Trees Aid in Stormwater Management

Trees and forested areas play a critical role in preserving the ecological health, character, natural beauty, and historic heritage of our Township. Many of the original drainage channels have been encroached upon by historical development which preceded existing stormwater, steep slope, and floodplain regulations. While the Township works on trying to mitigate the effects of some of this past development through stormwater remediation projects, restoration and protection of our existing natural landscape including maintaining current tree canopy levels is key to keeping our precious, native soils in place, mitigating stormwater flows, and recharging our groundwater. Trees are important to stormwater because they capture and reuse large amounts of water. In particular, trees with trunk diameters of 30” or greater make the most significant contributions to runoff control. A single large, mature oak tree can capture 40,000 gallons of rainfall per year (source: https://www.usgs.gov/specialtopic/water-science-school/ science/evapotranspiration-andwater-cycle). Conifers also intercept a lot of stormwater due to their year-round needle-leaf coverage. Trees help reduce flooding through infiltration, interception, evaporation, and foliar (leaf) transpiration (see diagram). Interception and evapotranspiration also decrease runoff volume with larger trees providing exponentially more benefit than smaller trees. An average sized mature tree with a 25-foot diameter canopy can manage the 1-inch rainfall from 2,400 square feet of impervious surface,the footprint of a typical single-family home (EPA, Stormwater Trees Technical Report, 2017.) The absorption and interception of rainwater by large canopy trees as well as evergreens reduces volume and peak flow during storms. Many of us have experienced rainfall slowly dripping from large trees during a downpour. Tree canopy reduces rainfall intensity by 20%, increasing lag time by up to three hours, reducing flooding by allowing both natural and township systems to manage and infiltrate stormwater more effectively. Infiltration of stormwater recharges our underground aquifers which keeps our streams flowing during dry periods, helping to keep trees healthy, but also reducing flooding. Research has found that infiltration is on average 8X greater under tree canopies. (Eric Kuehler et al, USDA). This recharging of rainfall to groundwater is a natural form of stormwater control which trees do through their extensive root and leaf area systems. It helps maintain a more consistent base flow in streams during dry periods and helps reduce severe and rapid “out of bank” flooding during downpours. Clearing even relatively small numbers of trees from a property can increase runoff to downstream neighbors, and aggravate downstream erosion. Once heavy rains are in direct contact with compacted lawn or eroded topsoil, the capacity of the soil to absorb and retain at least some of the stormwater is significantly impaired. Preservation of woodland remnants whenever possible is also important since

native forest soils may have taken hundreds of years to develop and are not readily replaced. According to the Nature Conservancy “A Green Path to a Stable Climate”, trees help moderate climate extremes and can help reduce the reoccurrence of extreme storms and cloudbursts, both locally and regionally. The evaporation and transpiration of moisture drawn up by trees from the ground restores moisture to the atmosphere where it can create a cooling effect and more gradual, regular rainfall, instead of violent cloudbursts. In conclusion, preventing or slowing tree loss and replacing what is being lost whenever possible is one important tool the Township and residents can utilize to slow and offset future increases in stormwater flows while protecting our Township's natural heritage, beauty, and quality of life.

Want to optimize your landscaping investment? Using the correct native plants in their appropriate habitats will turn your garden into a living organism, capable of restoring ecological health to your property, once and for all. Here are some tips to get you started. When you head to your local garden center next spring, be a tad suspicious of the showiest selections. The majority of these trendy plants are non-native, ornamental species that may not be suitable or ecologically beneficial to your property. If you want to build a self-sustaining, ecologically appropriate landscape that will save you time and money every year, start by selecting native plants and putting them where they belong.

Native plants are local species that have existed naturally in a specific environment before agriculture, urbanization, and other interventions altered the landscape. These plants evolved and thrived in the unique conditions present in their habitat, and they support local wildlife - including the pollinators we so desperately need.

The best part is that you might already have some native species hiding on your property. Identifying them with books like Newcomb's Wildflower Guide can be the first step in crafting a suitable plant list. You can also check your selections by searching them on the USDA's PLANTS database.

Once you have your native plants, you're presented with the second dilemma: where to put them? Placing a Rudbeckia hirta (Black-Eyed Susan) in a shady, moist site is not going to last very long. It is a myth that some plants “just die.” Plants perish because they were not meant to live in that particular location, whether that means they got too much water, not enough sun, or that the soil had too much clay. Always consider the three prime factors before you sink that spade: water, sunlight, and soil. Try a sunny, dry spot with well-draining soil for your Rudbeckia it will love you for it!

However, some plants labeled “native” in garden centers are not always locally native. A plant that is indigenous to Colorado wouldn't be considered an appropriate choice for a Pennsylvania landscape, even if that Heirloom Coreposis has a “native” sticker on the container. Yes, it is native, but not to us in the Northeast. Therefore, careful plant selection is the first step to starting a healthy, selfsustaining landscape. There are approximately 2,100 native plants in Pennsylvania - quite a variety! Species 26

Clearly, careful plant selection and location scouting is not just gardening - it is restoration. Navigating native plant selection and planting can feel like a daunting task, but once the landscape is established, it will last a lifetime with little to no intervention. Tips from the Golf Tour of Greater Philadelphia 502 million rounds of golf were played on US courses in 2020, and while 2021's numbers aren't tallied yet, the expectation is for continued growth. Fortunately, more young people and women are joining too! Eventually this may have a great impact on the average age of a US golfer: currently a 54-year old male.

What's surprising is that most golfers on public courses never obtain a handicap! (Also known as a “cap.”) Unless you prefer playing alone, you're denying yourself an important benefit, because a handicap gives you a serious advantage in group play. And it's relatively easy to get one. How? Through terrific organizations like the Golf Tour of Greater Philadelphia, the Golf Association of Philadelphia, the USGA, and the R&A (Royal and Ancient). All of these prestigious entities use the World Handicap System, which calculates it for players in over 100 countries.

Basically, after you play three rounds (54 holes) with a group, you can receive an initial handicap. (There is a prohibition on posting scores from solo rounds.) Once you record 20 games, your fully developed handicap is based on an average of your best eight rounds. There are more complex calculations involved, including the course rating, slope rating, bogey rating (yes, that's a thing), and mechanisms that kick in if there are any wild swings in your scores. But it all starts with just 3 games, and you don't have to do the math!

What's the range for a handicap? It's wide, but it tops out at 54. (That seems to be the lucky number for this article.) The current average for men is 16.4, and for women it's 27.3. Why bother? If you want to improve, you want to be able to measure yourself against other golfers, and a handicap is an objective representation of your current playing ability. And beginner or pro, if you like competition, an accurate “cap” levels the playing field a bit. It also enables you to present yourself honestly to the other players in your group - so there are no shocked faces when you birdie every hole! BTW, good shots have avian names, like birdie (one under par), eagle (two under par), albatross (3 under par) and the highly unlikely condor (4 under par). The birds get bigger as the shots get better. 2022 starts with resolutions for many of us. Let us help you with a fun one! His father was Clarence Clark Zantzinger, another well-known Philadelphia architect whose firm, Zantzinger, Medary and Borie, designed nearby Chanticleer and contributed to the design of the Philadelphia Art Museum. By all accounts the Zantzingers knew how to enjoy their beautiful house and surrounding property. They liked to entertain and built a swimming pool and bathhouses. They also added a solarium to the Mansion, designed by Alfred's brother, also an architect. They planted an orchard and enhanced the landscaping which was lovingly attended by their gardener, Paul Earle, for more than 36 years. Sheep grazed on the property, chickens clucked in the barnyard and a pair of geese with clipped wings splashed about in the pond. The Zantzingers spent many hours roaming around the picturesque grounds accompanied by their dogs. After the Zantzingers passed away the Township acquired the entire 47.5 acre property principally to prevent it from being developed. The Mansion itself was considered a liability. It was only after a series of failed attempts to sell the Mansion that the Township began to offer it as a venue for private and public events which brought in revenue for the Township. The Township renamed the property “The Willows” in recognition of the many weeping willows surrounding the pond. Since then, thousands of events have been held at the Mansion and tens of thousands of guests have passed through its doors. With the Mansion's revival, its remarkable history continues. Its second hundred years are well underway and its future looks bright: the Willows Park Preserve is committed to bringing it back to the community.
