White Horse Village is holding its
20th Annual Octofair Saturday, October 8, 2016 from 9:00 until 2:30.
A silent auction of over 200 items of fine furniture, rugs, paintings, china, jewelry and collectibles is a featured activity. For sale are needlework handicrafts and items created in our Art Studio and Woodshop. Baskets of amazing contents will be raffled off in addition to a handmade quilt. Also for sale are lightly used men's and women's clothing, new and used books, homemade jams, jellies and baked goods. The Gift Corral, the White Horse Village new clothing and gift shop will be open as well as the Stall, the White Horse Village resale shop. Children's activities take place in its own room just off the lobby area. Tours of White Horse Village will be available. Continental breakfast and lunch will be served in the Paddock Grille and Patio. There is plenty of free parking with guides to direct you into the Octofair. Named after tavern keeper Eli Shugart, Sugartown became a bustling village corner during the late 1800s, bringing people together to exchange news, conduct business and share their lives as a community. What's In Bloom At Jenkins Arboretum & Gardens September Blooming Interest:
Jenkins Arboretum & Gardens is abloom this fall with wonderful native plants, and many of them are also be available for purchase for your home gardens in our plant gift shop. Our plant shop is open daily from 9am - 4pm,7 days a week. Check the Home Page of our website www.jenkinsarboretum.org for Plant Shop Inventory (selections vary). Click on 'Gardens' link on our Home Page for additional links to "What's in Bloom" with photos, Educational Programs & Events, and other important and exciting Arboretum information. Our PLANT SHOP SUPER SALE WEEKEND will be held this year on Friday, September 30, Saturday, October 1, and Sunday, October 2 from 9am - 4pm. Join us for a special weekend as we wind down the season and prepare ourselves for the long dormant period. On Friday, we will host a plant clinic and tool maintenance workshop. Need help identifying a plant, weed, insect, disease, flower or fruit? Bring your samples and test our trained horticultural staff. In addition, bring your garden tools for an informal lesson in tool maintenance including sharpening, cleaning, and oiling. The plant sale, clinic, and workshop are open to the public and free of charge. All weekend long you will receive significant discounts in our Plant Shop.

Chanticleer - Enjoying Summer, Anticipating Autumn Chanticleer is welcoming the long summer days, while looking forward to the changing colors of autumn. There is still plenty to see and do in the garden. Take in views from the majestic terraces at the Chanticleer House, from the top of the Bulb Meadow, or from one of our many handcrafted seats and benches. Meander along the paths, looking for glimpses of late season bloomers like asters, combined with striking foliage as it changes color. Enjoy a picnic with friends and family at one of our picnic
areas tucked into corners of the garden to provide lovely views.

Claiming they have leftover asphalt from another job: Professional asphalt contractors will know, with great accuracy, how much paving material is needed to complete a project. Rarely will they have leftover material. Pushing you to make a quick decision: Reputable contractors will provide a written estimate that will be valid for weeks or months. Yard Waste Collection: Collected curbside on Wednesdays (with the exception of holiday weeks), must be placed in bio-degradable paper bags or loose in a 35 gallon refuse container. Contents of container cannot exceed 50 lbs. No plastic bags will be accepted. Tree trimmings and brush must be tied in bundles no longer than 3 feet in length and branches can be long larger than 2" in diameter. No firewood will be collected. Leaves will be collected in bio-degradable bags when placed at the curb except during the Township wide leaf collection in the fall. Up to 10 bundles/bags of yard waste per collection will be accepted. Plastic bags, trash, grass, and dirt mixed with lawn debris is not permitted.

Hurricane Season - Know the Hazards The major hazards associated with hurricanes are: Storm Surge & Storm Tide Heavy Rainfall & Inland Flooding High Winds Rip Currents Tornadoes
Storm Surge & Storm Tide
Storm surge and large waves produced by hurricanes pose the greatest threat to life and property along the coast. Storm Surge is an abnormal rise of water generated by a storm's winds. Storm surge can reach heights well over 20 feet and can span hundreds of miles of coastline.

Storm Tide is the water level rise during a storm due to the
combination of storm surge and the astronomical tide. The destructive power of storm surge and large battering waves can result in loss of life, buildings destroyed, beach and dune erosion and road and bridge damage along the coast. Storm surge can travel several miles inland. In estuaries and bayous, salt water intrusion endangers public health and the environment.
Heavy Rainfall & Inland Flooding
Tropical cyclones often produce widespread, torrential rains in excess of 6 inches, which may result in deadly and destructive floods. In fact, flooding is the major threat from tropical cyclones for people living inland. Flash flooding, defined as a rapid rise in water levels, can occur quickly due to intense rainfall. Longer term flooding on rivers and streams can persist for several days after the storm. When approaching water on a roadway, always remember Turn Around - Don't Drown. Rainfall amounts are not directly related to the strength of tropical cyclones but rather to the speed and size of the storm, as well as the geography of the area. Slower moving and larger storms produce more rainfall. In addition, mountainous terrain enhances rainfall from a tropical cyclone.

Be Prepared for Fall Storms & Power Outages Along with hurricane season comes lightning storms, we would like to remind the public to be prepared for lightning storms and power outages. Fall storms can cause electrical safety hazards on your property. Lightning, downed power lines, standing water and power outages are just a few serious safety concerns. To protect your family, follow these safety tips: Q: What should I do if I'm caught outside during a lightning storm? A: Lightning strikes tall targets, so move to a low point and crouch down. Stay away from trees. Avoid metal objects (bats, golf clubs, fishing rods, tennis rackets, tools, ladders). And stay away from water (pools, lakes, puddles). Q: Am I safer in or out of my car during a lightning storm?
A: Stay away from all downed power lines, and do not drive over downed power lines. If you are standing near a line that falls down, shuffle away keeping both feet together and on the ground. If you are in a car near downed power lines, do not get out of the vehicle. Report hazard to PECO. Q: My basement flooded and there is standing water. Is it safe to go down there? A: Never step into a flooded basement or building if water is covering outlets, appliances or cords. Never touch electric appliances, wires or cords while you are wet or standing in water. Never turn off power at the breaker box if you must stand in water to do so. Contact the co-op to shut power off at the meter. Q: I bought a portable generator to be prepared for the next power outage. Can I plug it into an outlet?
A: You are safer in your car. Do not leave your vehicle during a thunderstorm. Q: What should I do if I encounter a downed power line?
Without a transfer switch, electricity can backfeed through the home to power lines, creating an electrocution hazard for linemen making repairs. Also, never operate a generator inside; this can result in carbon monoxide poisoning.

Tali Guy's Recipe Page Summer is the eggplant's peak season. Look for shiny tight skin eggplants, which indicates freshness. Lighter weight eggplants will have less seeds and will not be bitter. Store outside the refrigerator for 2 days during the summer and 4 days in the winter. Eggplants will lose taste if kept in the refrigerator. Roasting eggplants on the grill provides a rich smoky taste, while the smoke and dirt remain outside the kitchen. During other periods of the year, when the grill is less in use, the roasting can be done at 400 degrees in the oven.
North Indian Eggplant Salad - Baingan Bharta Ingredients:
Roasted Eggplant Salad
1 Italian eggplant 2 tablespoons oil 1 teaspoon cumin seeds (optional) 1 large onion - chopped 1" ginger - chopped 2 garlic cloves - peeled and chopped 1 large tomato - chopped 1/2 teaspoon turmeric 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder 1 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons cilantro or parsley for garnish

Preparation:
When preparing to roast the eggplants on the grill wash well and score their skin with a knife to prevent bursting. Turn the grill on high and immediately lay the eggplants on the hottest surface. When the skin is burnt at the bottom, turn the eggplant. The eggplant will be cooked when blackened on all sides and has collapsed. Remove from the grill and let cool off for ten minutes. Slit the eggplants open and separate the flesh from the skin using a spoon. Transfer the flesh to a bowl. Chop roughly with a knife. At this point you can freeze the eggplants for later use, if interested. Bon AppĂŠtit
1. Roast the eggplant as directed above. 2. Heat the oil in a large frying pan. Add the cumin seeds. Fry for 1 minute. 3. Add the chopped onion and fry and turn with a spoon till golden. 4. Add the ginger and the garlic. Mix and turn for 1 minute. 5. Add the tomato, turmeric, ground cumin, chili powder and salt. Cook for 5-7 minutes until the tomato becomes soft. 6. Add the eggplant. Cook until all the liquids Grilled Eggplant evaporate (approx. 15 minutes). 7. Garnish with chopped parsley or cilantro. Serve in room temperature with bread.

Eggplant in Brine
This salad originally used fried eggplants. Nowadays it is preferable to roast them on the grill. Prepare a day ahead, as the taste improves Ingredients: over time. 1 Italian eggplant 2 red peppers Ingredients: 1 long hot pepper 1 Italian eggplant (optional) 5 tablespoons olive oil 3 garlic cloves 2 tablespoons chopped red peeled and chopped pepper in brine (fresh red 2 tablespoons olive oil pepper may be substituted) 2 tablespoons lemon 2 tablespoons chopped parsley juice or vinegar or cilantro 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/3 cup vinegar 1/2 teaspoon sugar 1/3 cup water 2 teaspoons sugar Preparation: 1/2 teaspoon salt 1. Roast the eggplant as directed above. At the same time roast the 1/4 teaspoon black pepper red and the hot peppers. Turn the peppers when they are blackened. Giving puppies too much freedom encourages distractions and restricts your ability to have control. You should keep your puppy close. A good rule of thumb is to keep your pup’s head in line with your body.
Mark the inappropriate pulling behavior.
Quickly altering your direction while using your voice to attract your puppy’s attention will shift your dog’s focus back onto you. A simple command of “hey” or “no” is a sufficient way to achieve this.

Hi Brittany! Before we discuss correcting and preventative techniques, it is important to understand why your puppy is pulling on walks. One of the main reasons dogs pull on the leash is because they have a lack of focus on their handler. Puppies are especially prone to being easily distracted since everything is so new to them. Here are some tips that can help you gain more control on your walks:
Bring high-value treats on the walk with you.
Using a treat, such as cheese or something you don’t give your puppy often, will help him/her be more driven to work harder for it. This will also help reinforce good behavior in the future.
Once your puppy’s attention is regained, praise and reward the good behavior to show a job well done. Never praise a bad behavior, as this will confuse your puppy.
Be patient, repetitive and consistent.
Remember that puppies need structure and consistency in order to learn. You won’t see change happen in one day, but repeating the same routine and correcting the pulling will help make the learning process easier and more beneficial.
