As we prepare to hold another year of blood drives in Carol's memory, we know that it will be hard to top 2013, when we expanded the blood drive to a new location and a new season (Lansdale, PA, in mid-summer), and welcomed the donor who helped us achieve one of our biggest milestones to date: collecting the 1,000th unit of blood donated at a Carol H. Axelrod Memorial Blood Drive held at Lankenau Medical Center! In 2013 alone, our three blood drives collected a total of 389 units, and helped as many as 1,167 recipients receive the transfusions they needed. Many, many thanks to all of the donors, volunteers, and supporters who have made these achievements possible! A few years ago, we came up with a way to ensure that our blood drives could have an immediate and direct impact in the communities where they are held. We viewed it as another way to spread the word about the importance of blood donation, but also as an opportunity to bring attention to very worthy organizations that can use support as they strive to carry out their own missions. In conjunction with a blood drive, we issue a "community challenge," whereby our family pledges to make a monetary donation to a designated organization in honor of the drive. The amount of the donation is based on the

number of units of blood that are collected at the blood drive. And if we surpass the previous year's collection total at that blood drive location, we double our donation to the organization! Our first community challenges were held in conjunction with our October blood drives, and Lankenau Medical Center was the recipient of those contributions. But in 2013, when we held our second blood drive in Radnor Township, we had the opportunity to assist the Radnor ABC House. This year, in association with our Radnor blood drive in May, we are designating two local organizations, Francisvale Home for Smaller Animals and the Women's Resource Center, as the recipients of the challenge. And looking ahead to our July blood drive in Lansdale, we will work with an organization called Laurel House. The Story Behind the Carol H. Axelrod Memorial Blood Drive Our family knows from personal experience that blood donors give hospital patients and their loved ones an incomparable gift: the gift of time. Whether a blood donation is used to save a life, to prolong a life, or to improve the quality of life, it allows families to spend more time together, making special memories. Thanks to the generosity of blood donors, our family was given another year with the mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and aunt we loved.

Held in October 2008, it turned out to be the hospital's most successful blood drive up to that point. We decided to turn the blood drive into an annual event and hold it in multiple locations. With every blood drive we hold, we hope to be able to help even more people who need transfusions. Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood and nine out of ten people will require a blood transfusion at some point during their lives. Human blood cannot be manufactured, and there is no substitute for it. Blood donors were the only people who could give our family an extra year with Carol. Many, many other families find themselves in the same situation every day. Blood is used in emergency rooms and operating rooms, but people with cancer and other chronic illnesses also require blood transfusions, often on a regular basis. Running or walking with your dog is a great way for both of you to exercise and for your dog to get extra mental stimulation. Because dogs perceive the world around them through their sense of smell, taking your dog for a run will benefit his physical health as well as enrich his mind by opening him up to new and exciting scents. Dogs who are well-behaved on leash make excellent exercise partners and walks more enjoyable for everyone. Working on leash skills not only makes walking your dog easier for you, but increases his chances of getting to explore more places with you because you'll be more likely to bring him along. Here are some basic tips to help make walking your dog more fun:

The Right Tools! Before you take the first step out of the door, you need to make sure you have the right tools to walk your dog. Every dog should be walked on a standard four-to-eight foot leash. Avoid retractable leashes in public, as they can cause harm if they fail to lock or break while you are out with your dog. Next, you need to dress your dog appropriately with identifying tags and the right walking harness or collar for your dog. If your dog pulls on or tightens the leash when he's excited, a standard flat collar is not right for you. Constant tightening on your dog's neck can lead to injury and actually teaches your dog to pull harder as he associates the tightness with walking forward. Try to use a no-pull harness that can help you teach your dog to walk on a looser leash. Another great option is a face collar which can control your dog similar to the way a bridle controls a horse; wherever the face goes the body follows. While many people associate face collars with muzzles, they are actually very different and still allow your dog to fully open and close their jaws. Always be sure to fit a harness or face collar correctly and spend some time indoors getting your dog used to the new gear before taking the show on the road. TeachingYour Dog To Walk With You Although dogs are social animals, they do not naturally walk in line with each other. Therefore, walking close to you on a leash will take some time and practice. The number one thing to keep in mind when training your dog is that what you reinforce will be repeated, even if you did not reinforce on purpose. Even if you think they are being choked or restricted by their collar and should be learning to avoid that discomfort, you are reinforcing pulling by allowing your dog to move forward. After you make sure you have the right gear and that it fits properly, teach your dog that looking at you or "checking in" is

awesome! Take a few small, tasty treats and hold the leash loosely in one hand. Let your dog know you have treats and reward any calm behavior at the door before you even step outside. Initially you might feel like a pez dispenser feeding your dog for every check in and glance but it'll be worth it when you have a well-behaved walking buddy. Once you are out of the door, try to be aware of every time your dog acts and think if you want the behavior repeated. If the answer is yes, reward your dog. Reinforced behavior is repeated, so if you like it, reward it! During the acquisition phase of learning, your dog needs a lot of reinforcement to really learn a behavior and make it stick. If your dog makes a mistake or behaves in a way that you do not want to see again, do not reinforce the behavior by doing anything that your dog might enjoy. This includes continuing to walk. Each step you take, you are teaching your dog something. Only move forward or offer a reward for behavior you like. In time you will see that the reinforced behaviors occur much more frequently. Clear and consistent communication is how you will teach your dog to repeat the wanted behavior. Heel walking, or formal obedience walking with your dog right next to you, can be taught once your dog understands loose leash walking. Keep in mind that smelling is half the fun for your pooch. Try not to force them to walk in a heel position for more than 10% of any walk or they will not get the most out of the mental work out. Beware Of The Three Ds! With any behavior, we always want to be aware of the three Ds that can sabotage you and your dog: distance, distraction and duration. Whenever you are working on a new skill with your dog, you should try to do so in a low distraction environment where you can work one-on-one with him to set him up for success. Always be sure to know what you want to work on before you ever get your dog in on the game. Over time as your dog shows that he understands your cues or commands, you can begin to methodically and slowly add distance, distractions and duration to help your dog learn to generalize his behavior. Pick a calm area or even your own yard to start teaching your dog to keep a loose leash before going out to a busy trail or store. Keep training sessions short and fun. If you need your dog to get a little more exercise than a short walk allows, try to plan for a game of fetch in a fenced-in area or check out your local dog parks and dog daycare. Villanova's Drug Store

The Old Opera House

This building is located on Lancaster Avenue in Villanova, close to the intersection with N. Spring Mill Road. It was no doubt a popular hangout for Villanova students, probably akin to what Campus Corner is today. The building has recently been an oriental rug gallery. At extreme left is a corner of a classic Atlantic gas station that has since been replaced with a more modern Shell station.

When the Wayne Opera House suffered a major fire in 1914, it was converted into an office/retail building. This picture was taken shortly after it was re-constructed. Today, Cole Wellness Spa and Art With A Twist operate in this building. Note that E. Lancaster Avenue was just a bumpy dirt road when the picture was taken.

RADNOR HISTORICAL SOCIETY The Radnor Historical Society is committed to preserve, protect, present, and promote the history of Radnor Township.

Memorial Day, 1922 Following the First World War, Radnor residents decided to honor local casualties of the war by erecting a memorial. The Chew family donated a piece of their land at the corner of Lancaster Avenue and Iven Avenue (the corner of today's Micro Center property),

and famed sculptor R. Tait McKenzie created the bas-relief bronze panel depicting soldiers with bayonets. Louis S. Adams was the architect of the memorial's wall. Township residents were asked to subscribe to the project, with a goal of raising $10,000. On Memorial Day, Sunday, May 28, 1922, the memorial was dedicated. U.S. Senator George Wharton Pepper (PA-R) was in attendance. The man saluting in this photograph is said to be General William A. Wiedersheim. Also seen are several children whose fathers' names are on the memorial. In the years since this photograph was taken, the memorial has been moved to the corner of South Wayne and Runnymede Avenues where it was rebuilt exactly, and panels have been added to commemorate veterans of more recent wars. The memorial remains the centerpiece of Radnor's Memorial Day activities.

Senior Lifestyles Minimize Your Risk of Falling When you're young, often the biggest injury you receive from a fall is red-faced embarrassment. As we get older, physical changes, health conditions and medications make falls more likely, and they can have a much bigger impact on your life than just being embarrassed. Each year, one in three adults over the age of 65 falls. The risk of falls increases with age. At age 80, over half of seniors fall each year. No: garbage, plastic bags, food waste, food tainted items (used paper plates, paper towels, paper napkins), Styrofoam, motor oil bottles or hazardous chemical containers, plastic toys or sporting goods, electronics, batteries, CDs, DVDs, foam egg cartons, ice cream cartons, light bulbs, hangers, yard waste or garden tools. Yard Waste Collection: Collected curbside on Wednesdays (with the exception of holiday weeks), must be placed in biodegradable paper bags or loose in a 35 gallon refuse container. Contents of container cannot exceed 50 lbs. No plastic bags will be accepted. Tree trimmings and brush must be tied in bundles no longer than 3 feet in length and branches can be long larger than 2" in diameter. No firewood will be collected. Leaves will be collected in bio-degradable bags when placed at the curb except during the Township wide leaf collection in the fall. Up to 10 bundles/bags of yard waste per collection will be accepted. Plastic bags, trash, grass, and dirt mixed with lawn debris is not permitted.

Permits & Pool Safety Questions Did you apply for and receive a permit or even know that a permit was required?

Questions to ask concerning public swimming pools and club memberships.

As the weather starts to warm up and all the snow and ice disappears, there is a tendency to want to make our outdoor living areas more livable. Often times, we are in a rush to soak up that first bit of nice weather and stretch our legs from a long cold winter. The anticipation of starting to whittle down the "To-Do" projects list that has been growing over the winter months can be a little overwhelming and these projects are often started without much of a second thought.

With the warming weather, now is the time people start to seek out a good safe Public Swimming Pool and secure their seasonal memberships. The following are recommended tips to inquire about in order to ensure a safe, fun swimming experience.

Did you apply for and receive a permit or even know that a permit was required? A permit is required for new construction, additions, alterations, any project that requires structural changes. Building permit applications are available on the Township website or at the Township office. Check with the Community Development Department before you make alterations to your home or business. Here are some of the improvements that require permits: Fences or walls Structural repair or replacement Shed, greenhouse Fireplace Wood deck, patio, porch Alternative Energy Systems Swimming pool, spa, or hot tub over 24 inches in depth Changes in use, home occupations, change in commercial tenants New buildings and additions Heating and air conditioning replacement Roof replacement Plumbing alterations Signs Electrical work or new installation Interior alterations

Inquire if all lifeguards are certified as a Lifeguard, CPR, & 1st Aide. Inquire as to the ratio of lifeguards to bathers. (1 per 50 is recommended) Inquire if the wading pool will be guarded by a lifeguard. Inquire as to the frequency of pool sampling during the day by lifeguards. (Indoor pools get sampled 2x per hour. Outdoor pools get sampled 1x per hour.) Inquire about the pool policy for accidents such as Vomiting or Formed and loose Fecal matter.

The Environment & You Chanticleer Opens for its 21st year By: Erin McKeon We are thrilled for the arrival of spring and the opportunity to open our gates to guests once again.
