284 Troop and Pack Fall Update Cub Pack 284 and Radnor Troop 284 of Wayne are inclusive scouting programs open to boys between 1st and 12th grade and welcomes all boys and parents/guardians who wish to participate. The Pack generally meets at Wayne Elementary School every other Tuesday in the Fall/Winter/Spring as well as having many outdoor events spread over the year. Radnor Troop 284 meets every Saturday

morning at the Troop Cabin on Darby Paoli Road in the fall and spring and at Wayne Presbyterian Church in the winter. Pack 284 and Troop 284 have an active and dynamic year planned to provide many opportunities for boys to lead and personal growth. Pack 284 continued assisting Radnor Township with helping out with Truck Zoo and the Fall

Delmont Scout Camp and Marsh Creek state park. Several Troop 284 members are working on community service projects in order to earn the Rank of Eagle Scout. Radnor Troop 284 provides many leadership opportunities for the Boys as each meeting is led by boys in the troop in the various Senior Patrol Leader and Patrol Leader positions. This allows for opportunities for scouts to lead their peers and develop leadership skills for their lifetime. Both Radnor Troop 284 and Pack 284 are chartered by Wayne Presbyterian Church, but their membership represents the wide diversity of beliefs and cultures from the community. CALLING ALL RADNOR ALUMNI RADNOR ALL CLASS REUNION SET TO FOLLOW LM GAME It's tradition! Four years ago, the Radnor Alumni Council of the Radnor Educational Foundation, thought it would be fun to host an all-class reunion. Get some food, have some beer, see who showed up. "That year we had almost 400 people," recalls Chris Massaro, Radnor Class of '83 and Chair of the Radnor Alumni Council. "It far exceeded our expectations and was a great time." They did it again in 2013. Ditto for 2015. This year's event will be held Saturday, November 14th immediately following the Radnor-Lower Merion rival football game at Radnor High School. Game starts at 1:00 p.m. and the reunion runs from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Radnor Financial Center (directly across the street from the high school). "We only do it every other year when the Radnor-LM game is at home," explains

Massaro. "Alum are invited to go to the game, cheer Radnor on to victory and then come to the Radnor Financial Center to celebrate the big win." Tickets to the event are $25 with proceeds going to the Radnor Educational Foundation to support grants for projects that enrich the educational experience and foster innovative opportunities for students of RTSD and the community. Funds also support the Radnor Alumni Council's Edternship Program, a program to place Radnor seniors and juniors in meaningful internship experiences and alumni recognition activities like the Radnor Hall of Fame. Phone Scam Warning - Don't Be a Victim Over the past year, there has been an increase in phone scams targeting Township residents. Two of the most common ones are the IRS scam and the grandparent scam. Please take time to read about these scams and ways to prevent becoming their next victim. IRS-Impersonation Telephone Scam An aggressive and sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers has been making the rounds throughout the country. Callers claim to be employees of the IRS, but are not. These con artists can sound convincing when they call. They use fake names and bogus IRS identification badge numbers. They may know a lot about their targets, and they usually alter the caller ID to make it look like the IRS is calling. V ictims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver's license. Or, victims may be told they have a refund due to try to trick them into sharing private information. If the phone isn't answered, the scammers often leave an "urgent" callback request. Remember, the IRS will never: 1)

Call to demand immediate payment, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill;

Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe;

Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card;

Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone; or

Threaten.

Grandparent Scam In this scam, a grandparent receives a phone call (or sometimes an e-mail) from a "grandchild." If it is a phone call, it's often late at night or early in the morning when most people aren't thinking that clearly. Usually, the person claims to be traveling in a foreign country and has gotten into a bad situation, like being arrested for drugs, getting in a car accident, or being mugged and needs money wired ASAP. And the caller doesn't want his or her parents told. Sometimes, instead of the "grandchild" making the phone call, the criminal pretends to be an arresting police officer, a lawyer, a doctor at a hospital, or some other person. And we've also received complaints about the phony grandchild talking first and then handing the phone over to an accomplice who further spins the fake tale. Money Transfer Scams

Scam artists use a number of elaborate schemes to get your money, and many involve money transfers through companies like Western Union and MoneyGram or the purchase of a GreenDot Money Pak or Walmart MoneyCard. These are legitimate companies being used by criminals to take advantage of you. Many money transfer scams involve dramatic or convincing stories that play on your optimistic nature, your altruism or your thriftiness. But no matter how you parse it, they always cost you money. Here are some scams involving money transfers that you may recognize: Counterfeit Check Scams Someone sends you a check with instructions to deposit it and wire some or all the money back. Lotteries and Sweepstakes You just won a foreign lottery! The letter says so, and a cashier's check is included. All you have to do is deposit the check and wire money to pay for taxes and fees. Overpayment Scams Someone responds to your posting or ad, and offers to use a cashier's check, personal check or corporate check to pay for the item you're selling. At the last minute, the so-called buyer (or the buyer's "agent") comes up with a reason to write the check for more than the purchase price, and asks you to wire back the difference. Online Purchase Scams If you are buying something online and the seller insists on a money transfer or prepaid card as the only form of payment, consider it a red flag: ask to use a credit card, an escrow service (PayPal) or another way to pay. Family Emergency Scams You get a call out of the blue from someone who claims to be a member of your family and needs cash to get out of a jam to fix a car, get out of jail or leave a foreign country. He begs you to wire money right away or to provide the card number to a prepaid money card and to keep the request confidential. Never wire money or provide prepaid card numbers to anyone in these or similar situations, they are all scams. The Chester and Delaware County Departments of Aging through their APPRISE programs of trained Medicare counselors, helps Medicare beneficiaries understand the health care options specific to their health needs and financial resources.

Access to specific pharmacies. Many seniors say it is important to have access to a specific pharmacy or a specific pharmacist. Each Part D plan has a network of pharmacies offering the best price for members of that plan. When considering a switch, it is easy to check the pharmacies in other plans' networks to ensure similar access.

Each year during the Open Enrollment period, October 15 - December 7, Medicare beneficiaries should check their health plans and drug plans, but many don't. Here are some of the most important reasons to consider changing your plan.

Top Considerations for Drug (Part D) Plan Change: The cost of the plan. Most Medicare beneficiaries consider the premiums, deductibles and co-pays when initially selecting a Part D plan, butÊtheyÊdon't continue to shop for the lowest cost plan each year. Prevent Fires in the Clothes Dryer Avoid fires by cleaning filters after each load of wash and removing lint that collects in dryer vents. Use Portable Generators Safely Always use generators outdoors, away from doors, windows and vents. Never use generators in homes, garages, basements, crawl spaces, or other enclosed or partially enclosed areas, even with ventilation due to carbon monoxide hazard. Fall Chores & Winter Reminders Tackling Fall Chores With an Eye on Stream Pollution

SNOW, Sidewalks & Streets

There are many sources at this time of year that can pollute stormwater - the rainwater that makes its way into storm drains or runs off properties into streams. Leaf litter and yard waste dumped into a stormwater basin or near a waterway can cause harmful nutrient accumulation. Leaves swept into the street can enter storm drains and make their way into the nearest creek as well. Excess lawn fertilizer can wash away with the rain and bare soil can also run off into streams and cause sediment pollution.

As always, the cooperation of residents and businesses is appreciated by the Townships to help them keep your streets and sidewalks safe during inclement weather. Please remember:

As you tackle fall cleanup chores, put these tips into practice: Shred yard and leaf waste for use as mulch or fertilizer. Or, place out for yard waste collection. Don't fertilize immediately before a rainstorm and don't apply fertilizers in excess. Always follow the directions on the bottle for safe application and disposal whenever you use a chemical product.

As long as it's snowing, the first priority is keeping main roads open and passable. Under normal circumstances, cul-de-sacs and dead end streets are typically plowed last because they carry the lowest volume of traffic. State highways and county roads are cleared by state and county snow removal crews.

Be Prepared This Winter With any luck, winter will come and go without the crippling storms we endured last year. Mother Nature, though, isn't known for her predictability so here are some tips from www.ready.gov, a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) preparedness campaign, to help you weather winter's worst.

Maintain ventilation when using kerosene heaters to avoid build-up of toxic fumes.

Place the generator outside in a wellventilated, dry area, away from air intakes to the home.

Refuel kerosene heaters outside and keep them at least 3 feet from flammable objects.

If you will be going away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home and don't set the temperature any lower than 55 degrees.

Historic Sugartown's Book Bindery th

Amid the historic structures in the 19 -century village of Sugartown, stands a small, studio building, painted in vibrant brick red colors. Inside, visitors discover a world-class th th collection of late 18 and early 19 -century tools once used in the bookbinding trade. The collection contains over 2500 tools once

bookbinding shop together in Ardmore, and over the years, drew national recognition for their skills as conservators. A two-volume set of The Federalist Papers, Broadside announcing the Declaration of Independence, and the original works of John James Audubon are among the important documents that the Shihadehs restored. The Shihadeh's work can be found in rare book collections of museums, universities, dignitaries and serious collectors throughout the world.

After the Shihadeh's retired in 2000, Sugartown's founder John C. Nagy, did not want to see such a beautiful collection get sold off in pieces. Historic Sugartown purchased the collection and constructed the Book Bindery to preserve and interpret the increasingly rare artisanship of book binding. The collection features many early rare brass tools, including decorative pallets, fillets, and decorative rolls, with examples by makers from the United States, England and France. It is thought to contain the largest collection of Philadelphia-crafted tools in the United States.

Historic Sugartown's Book Bindery Historic Sugartown recently partnered with Ramon Townsend of Exton, PA, to offer hand bookbinding workshops in the Book Bindery. Townsend, who specializes in custom bookbinding and repair, apprenticed at Colonial Williamsburg. Workshop attendees create and take home their own personally hand-crafted book. Dog Training - Praising Your Dog Why is it so hard for your dog to understand praise including a cue? You will often see directions on the internet with phrases such as, "Every time his rump hits the floor, tell him 'Good sit!'" This is meant to help your dog pair their current act with the word "sit."

As humans, we are able to understand the various ways words can be used. We understand that one word can have many meanings in various situations and that different words can be used to mean the same thing. Unfortunately, your dog is not so lucky when it comes to verbal communication. Dogs are phenomenal at exhibiting and reading body language, but they have a vocabulary of approximately 12-20 vocalizations (depending on which study you read). This number range is way less than the thousands of words humans have adapted to understanding, and that doesn't even include tone, context, etc. Once you know and accept this idea, it becomes a little more understandable when your trainer tells you that "down" can only mean one thing and that "put your belly on the floor" can't also mean "don't jump." Other than overusing words and leading to misunderstandings, there is one other instance where people misuse words with their dogs, and this is a big one "sit" followed by "good sit" or some other variation of using a command word in praise. Why is this such a bad idea? Well, you are going to be spending quite a bit of time teaching your dog a few key words, such as sit, down, stay, etc., and pairing them with specific behaviors. Each time you use a word differently, you are adding a little confusion to the mix and potentially making it harder for your dog to learn the true meanings of the behaviors. We generally refer to this as the power or value of the cue. You want the cue to be very strong and for your dog to understand its meaning clearly.

Here is why that doesn't work: your dog does not understand grammar. Simply stated, you understand that "sit" can be both a verb and noun, as in "sit down" and "the act of sitting." Your dog does not. For your dog, "sit" is technically a discriminative sound or stimulus. A good example of a discriminative stimulus that may be easier to understand is the sound of a whistle in sporting events. The whistle tells you to start, whether that means dive off of the block in swimming, or to stop due to a penalty, as seen in football. The whistle means only one thing in each sport and is never repeated right after the start or stop to tell the players they did a good job. This is how it feels to your dog. The sound "sit" means that they are likely to get a reward if they put their bum on the floor. Once their bum is down, repeating the cue with the praise does not tell your dog that they did a good job sitting. That would mean that they understand "good" is being used to describe the act of sitting. You're essentially wasting the power of the word "sit" by repeating it with the praise. So what does this mean for praise? You might have come to the conclusion that words matter for your dog. This is absolutely true! So what about the power of your chosen praise word? Well, you give a word power through consistency and clarity by using each word for only one meaning.

associate it with good feeling and drive them to work for the chosen praise word. To be extremely clear and consistent you can choose a unique word or sound and pair it exclusively with a food reward to help build a stronger drive for reinforcement. This is one reason why many trainers recommend clickers for training. The clicker is used as a primary reinforcer since it is always paired with food. Even if you accidentally click, you still treat to ensure the clicker is highly reinforcing. Secondary reinforcers, like praise, are also used once a dog has a good history of reward and is preforming extremely well so that you can fade out the clicker or primary reinforcer. I, for one, tell my dogs they are good and beautiful and the best dogs ever all the time, which is why I specifically do not use the word "good" in training. My primary reinforcer is "yes." Rarely would I say "yes" to a dog in regular every day interactions. I use "rockstar" as my secondary reinforcer, letting my dog know they are on the right track or that a treat will be coming imminently (it's a great way to utilize praise for performance dogs since you are not allowed to treat them during competition). Hopefully now you understand that words have power and meaning for your dog, just maybe not the meaning you expected. By communicating clearly and consistently with your dog, you can build a stronger relationship and see better training results. Happy Training! Forever Jenkins Endowment Campaign ENDOW AN ACRE Preserving a Garden Sanctuary and Living Museum Jenkins Arboretum & Gardens of Devon is one of eastern Pennsylvania's major horticultural and environmental assets. It preserves and nurtures 48 acres of Chester County's rapidly disappearing natural terrain, sited on a ridge above the historic and once agriculturally rich "great valley" with Valley Forge National Historic Park to the northern horizon. With a tall tree layer and multi-layered shrub understory, the Arboretum provides the community with a tranquil oasis for the enjoyment of all. Further, the Arboretum ensures the integrity and conservation of over 10,000 plants in our living collections with rigorous museum and scientific standards in labeling, mapping, and database recordkeeping.

Fulfilling a Vision Since opening in 1976, the Arboretum has been built on Mr. Jenkins' intention to honor his wife, Elisabeth and celebrate her life.
