Holiday Season Safety Tips (information from the National Safety Council) Halloween

Kids love the magic of Halloween, but costume and traffic safety are essential for trick-or-treaters. These tips can help make a safe and happy holiday for everyone. Costume Safety To help ensure adults and children have a safe holiday, follow these Halloween safety tips: • Be sure to choose a costume that won't cause safety hazards; all costumes, wigs and accessories should be fire-resistant. • If children are allowed out after dark, fasten reflective tape to their costumes and bags, or give them glow sticks. • Opt for nontoxic Halloween makeup over masks, which can obscure vision; always test makeup in a small area first to see if any irritation develops. • Remove all makeup before children go to bed to prevent skin and eye irritation. When They're on the Prowl Here's a scary statistic: Children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than on any other day of the year. Lack of visibility because of low lighting at night also plays a factor in these incidents. Keep these tips in mind when your children are out on Halloween night:

• Agree on a specific time children should return home. • Teach your children never to enter a stranger's home or car. • Instruct children to travel only in familiar, well-lit areas and stick with their friends.

• A responsible adult should accompany young children on the neighborhood rounds.

• Tell your children not to eat any treats until they return home, and take care to avoid any food allergies.

• If your older children are going alone, plan and review a route acceptable to you.

Keeping fire safety top of mind in the kitchen during this joyous but hectic time is important, especially when there's a lot of activity and people at home. As you start preparing your holiday schedule and organizing that large family feast, remember, by following a few simple safety tips you can enjoy time with your loved ones and keep yourself and your family safer from fire. Top Safety Tips • Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stove top so you can keep an eye on the food. • Stay in the home when cooking your turkey and check on it frequently. • Keep children away from the stove. Safety Tips for Motorists NSC offers these additional safety tips for parents and anyone who plans to be on the road during trick-or-treat hours: • Watch for children walking on roadways, medians and curbs. • Enter and exit driveways and alleys carefully. • At twilight and later in the evening, watch for children in dark clothing. • Discourage new, inexperienced drivers from driving on Halloween.

• Make sure kids stay away from hot food and liquids. The steam or splash from vegetables, gravy, or coffee could cause serious burns. • Keep knives out of reach of children. • Be sure electric cords from an electric knife, coffee maker, plate warmer, or mixer are not dangling off the counter within easy reach of a child.

Turkey Fryers Turkey fryers that use cooking oil are not safe. These fryers use large amounts of oil at high temperatures, which can cause devastating burns. If you want a fried turkey for your Thanksgiving meal, purchase it from a grocery store, restaurant, or buy a fryer that does not use oil.

• Keep matches and utility lighters out of the reach of children — up high in a locked cabinet. • Never leave children alone in a room with a lit candle. • Keep the floor clear so you don't trip over kids, toys, pocketbooks, or bags. • Make sure your smoke alarms are working. Shop Safely This Holiday Season

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reminds consumers to prioritize safety during the holiday season. Shop only from trusted stores and online retailers to protect your family from common holiday-related hazards. Most unsafe or counterfeit products sold through unverified third-party sites can come from foreign countries such as China and can have devastating and sometimes fatal consequences for families. CPSC urges consumers, especially parents and caregivers shopping for young children, to remain vigilant to prevent toy-related injuries and deaths. In addition, be proactive when choosing holiday decorations to keep family and friends safe. “American families can keep their celebrations joyful and safe by shopping at trusted retailers, staying current on recalls and using holiday decorations properly. Shoppers should be especially cautious about unsafe or counterfeit products sold from foreign countries, that may not meet U.S. safety standards,” said CPSC Acting Chairman Peter A. Feldman. “Don't let dangerous products leave you out in the cold this holiday season: Follow CPSC's tips to shop and decorate safely.” General shopping • Know your seller. Purchase toys from stores and online retailers you know and trust. • Be wary of online deals that sound too good to be true, as these toys may be hazardous or counterfeit products. • When buying secondhand products online, verify recalls at CPSC.gov/recalls before purchasing. Toys • Follow age guidance and other safety information on toy packaging and choose toys that match each child's interests and abilities. • Provide safety gear, including helmets for scooters and other riding toys, and ensure children use them each time they ride. • Keep balls and toys with small parts away from children younger than three and keep deflated balloons away from children younger than eight. 14 NEWTOWN NEWS · FALL 2026

Safe Shopping (information from State Farm) From fistfights to identity theft, shopping at Black Friday sales can come with a few safety risks. If you decide to brave the crowds in person, consider these holiday shopping tips: • Shop with friends or relatives when taking a trip to the store. You may find safety in numbers. • Keep your purse close to your body and your wallet in an inside coat pocket or a front pants pocket. This may help you avoid thieves who might try to swipe them from your shopping cart or unmonitored back pocket. • Avoid arguments or fights over an item. • Refrain from taking your money out until asked and avoid flashing a lot of cash. If possible, opt to use your digital wallet, or credit or debit card for your purchases. • Slip your more expensive purchases into less noticeable bags, perhaps from your less expensive purchases that day. • Watch over your items while eating in the food court, as they may be easy to steal when people are distracted. Keep your shopping bags close to you and below your table if possible. • Try to make purchases on just one credit card. Data breaches may occur, especially during busy shopping seasons, and cyberattacks generally increase during Black Friday sales. Should this happen, you can reduce the risk by not having multiple cards compromised.

With so many people out and about, you may encounter aggressive drivers on the road. Steer clear of contributing to the problem. Remember to drive defensively and be aware of the signs of road rage in other drivers. Parking lots can be dangerous too, so be on guard: • Exercise patience when looking for a parking space. Instead of speeding up to catch that empty (or soon-to-be empty) spot, be cautious of other drivers who may be rushing. • Take extra precautions when maneuvering your vehicle if you live in an area with winter weather conditions. • Park your vehicle in a well-lit area as close to the store as you can get. Additionally, opt to shop at earlier times to help you avoid dangers that evening darkness may bring. • Avoid leaving anything valuable in your car. • Lock your vehicle before you head inside. • Help yourself avoid getting lost by making a mental note of where you parked and by snapping a quick picture, if possible. • Keep your keys in hand when walking back to your vehicle, especially if you're carrying valuable items. • Look around and under your vehicle as you approach it. If there is a suspicious item on your windshield or your car appears to be tampered with, determine if it is safe to drive to a well-lit location to check it rather than checking right away or call the authorities. • Store shopping bags out of plain sight, in your trunk if possible. • Back out slowly while scanning for cars and people.

• Save your receipts and monitor your credit card activity by reviewing your bill immediately or periodically checking your card company's online app. • Ask for help moving and loading large items if needed. • Select a central location to meet if you are shopping with children in case you are separated. Americans are increasingly bicycling to commute, for exercise, or just for fun. NHTSA's bicycle safety initiatives focus on encouraging safer choices on the part of bicyclists and drivers to help reduce deaths and injuries on our roads. Many states consider a bicycle a vehicle when it's operated on the road — and bicyclists must follow the same rules. Helmets - Every bike ride begins with putting on a helmet. But it's equally important that you ensure a proper fit so your helmet can best protect you. Size can vary between manufacturers. Follow the steps to fit a helmet properly. It may take time to ensure a proper helmet fit, but your life is worth it. It's usually easier to look in the mirror or have someone else adjust the straps. For the most comprehensive list of helmet sizes according to manufacturers, go the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute (BHSI) at https://helmets.org. Avoid Crashes - There are two main types of crashes: the most common (falls) and the most serious (the ones with cars). Regardless of the reason for the crash, prevention is the name of the game. There are things you can do to decrease your risk of a crash. First, know some of the latest bicycle safety facts: • Bicyclist deaths were highest during the months of July through October. • Nearly three quarters of all bicyclist deaths occurred in urban areas. • Bicyclists failing to yield the right of way was the highest factor in fatal bike

E-Transportation Devices

As e-scooters, hoverboards and e-bikes become more popular for personal transportation and leisure activities, emergency departments are treating an increase in injuries nationwide. Collisions with motor vehicles and control issues are leading hazards. Here are some safety tips: • Always wear an appropriate e-scooter or e-bike helmet when riding to protect your head in a fall. • Before riding, check for any damage, which includes examining the handlebars, brakes, throttle, bell, lights, tires, cables, and frame. • See and be seen. Most deaths involve motor vehicles. Many micromobility products are small, quick, and quiet, making it difficult for others to spot you, especially in parking lots and structures. Expect vehicle drivers and pedestrians not to see you; slow down and stay aware of your surroundings. Use the bell/horn to alert others. Do not make abrupt, unpredictable movements. 18 NEWTOWN NEWS · FALL 2026

Be Prepared Before Heading Out • Ride a bike that fits you—if it's too big, it's harder to control the bike. • Ride a bike that works—it really doesn't matter how well you ride if the brakes don't work. • Wear equipment to protect you and make you more visible to others, like a bike helmet, bright clothing (during the day), reflective gear, and a white front light and red rear light and reflectors on your bike (at night, or when visibility is poor). • Ride one person per seat, with both hands on the handlebars, unless signaling a turn. • Carry all items in a backpack or strapped to the back of the bike. • Tuck and tie your shoelaces and pant legs so they don't get caught in your bike chain. • Plan your route if driving as a vehicle on the road, choose routes with less traffic and slower speeds. Your safest route may be away from traffic altogether, in a bike lane or on a bike path. Drive Defensively - Focused and Alert Be focused and alert to the road and all traffic around you; anticipate what others

PENNSYLVANIA TURNPIKE

Safety First:

Protecting Lives on the PA Turnpike At the PA Turnpike Commission, safety is more than a priority, it's the foundation of everything we do. Dedicated employees work in all conditions to maintain and support the roadway, enabling a safer experience for the half a million daily travelers who rely on it. year work zone crash rates fell by more than 25%.

But the PA Turnpike is only as safe as the drivers who use it. Motorists must commit to partnering with us on roadway safety. Managing speed and eliminating behindthe-wheel distractions protects everyone. Faster and heavier vehicles need more time and distance to stop. Speeding, inattentiveness, or ignoring precautions reduce the chances of avoiding serious outcomes.

Campaigns like Go Orange and Operation Orange Squeeze aim to change driver behavior, raising awareness and enforcing construction zone speed limits. In the latter, state troopers monitor traffic from construction vehicles, helping to catch speeding drivers in real time. Recent legislation further strengthened protections. Maintenance vehicles now use green warning lights for better visibility, and the Work Zone Speed Safety Camera program — run in partnership with PennDOT and the Pennsylvania State Police yielded meaningful results. During its fiveyear pilot, speeding dropped by 38%, excessive speeding dropped by 47%, and work zone crash rates were reduced by up to 50% when enforcement vehicles were present.

When it comes to roadway safety, the stakes couldn't be higher. Drivers who don't play by the rules face serious penalties. Reckless driving's impact goes far beyond license points; the consequences are nothing short of life and death for fellow drivers and those working to improve the Turnpike.

Work Zone Safety Matters

Several initiatives and ongoing investments that enhance overall safety, such as roadside assistance offered through the GEICO Safety Patrol and dedicated 24/7 coverage fromPennsylvania State Police Troop T, reflect a strong commitment to reducing risks. The Turnpike has also invested in driver education. The New Driver Work Zone Safety Program, an online course developed in collaboration with PennDOT, uses videos, infographics, and real-life scenarios to teach new drivers about work zone laws and safe driving practices. This free course is valuable for new drivers — as well as long-time motorists — and can be found on the Turnpike website.

Responsibility Behind the Wheel

Routine driving habits impact safety, too. The maximum speed limit is 70 mph. It is especially critical to slow down during severe weather events, such as winter storms, rain, fog, and heavy traffic. Pennsylvania's Move Over Law, enacted in 2020, requires drivers to move over or slow down when approaching emergency response personnel, including tow truck drivers and Turnpike Maintenance teams. Finally, distracted driving remains a major concern. Paul Miller's Law, which took

effect in June 2025, reinforces the importance of staying focused behind the wheel. It bans handheld mobile device use while driving and penalizes drivers with fines and citations. Technology plays a key role in keeping drivers informed, helping them plot the safest travel route. The Turnpike deploys advanced traffic management systems and collaborates with the 511PA app to provide real-time updates on incidents, weather and construction. A new texting service allows drivers stopped in unexpected backlogs to receive location-specific updates by texting “info” to 47676. On November 3rd, voters will elect those who will exercise POWER over our lives. The results of this contest will determine the majority and minority balances in both the U.S. Congress and the PA General Assembly. Those elected for U.S. Congress decide what Federal laws are written on issues that impact our lives — taxes, civil rights, voting rights, immigration, climate, tech, infrastructure, tech/AI, and healthcare. Our state officials make rules and laws about issues like education, minimum wage, fair housing, gun safety, reproductive rights, taxes, healthcare, and elections. U.S. Representatives serve two-year terms in Washington, DC. They introduce and vote for or against resolutions, bills, and amendments. They approve the budget and serve on policy committees such as those for agriculture, energy, foreign affairs, judiciary oversight, and small businesses. They also have the power to send articles of impeachment of elected officials to the Senate. ALL seventeen U.S. Representatives from Pennsylvania will be elected this fall; no U.S. Senators are on the ballot. In Pennsylvania, we will elect all of our State Representatives and one-half of our fifty State Senators who work in Harrisburg. It is important that you know what these elected officials do.

PA State Representatives are elected for two-year terms in even-numbered years. Each of the 203 districts represent a nearly equal number of constituents. Our state representatives work with the Senate to develop budgets, decide taxes, make redistricting decisions, and pass laws. Representatives have the exclusive power to impeach elected officials. Members serve on a variety of committees, from Education and Aging to Finance and Liquor Control. PA Governor is the Commonwealth's chief executive who proposes state budgets, signs or vetoes legislation, oversees state agencies, and works with the State Legislature on policies about economic development, public safety and emergency management. The Governor is also the Commander in Chief of the PA National Guard during a four-year term.

Ask yourself, “Do they make your angry or fearful? Do they name call and try to spread rumors? Do they ignore issues, blame others or promise unrealistic solutions? Ernie Norcia Debuts as MLTV21's First On-Air Art Instructor For years, I had harbored the belief that I had latent artistic talent. It wasn't until my first session in a Wayne Art Center drawing class that I realized just how latent my artistic talent is. My instructor, Ernie Norcia, assured me that I would improve. I wanted desperately to believe him. Ernie is a truly gifted artist. With a sliver of charcoal, he can make a blank sheet of paper come alive. I've seen his work in oils and other media as well. Spectacular! Fifty years of experience makes it look easy. Believe me, it isn't. Ernie's paintings can be found in corporations, hospitals and universities, as well as numerous private collections in the United States. He's got a wall full of prestigious awards for his work, but his first love is portraiture. Not surprising, since Ernie spent time in Italy studying the masters. Included among his commissioned drawings and paintings are images of Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Willy Nelson, Merle Haggard, Charley Pride and Nancy Drew. The original Dolly Parton painting now hangs in a gallery at Wayne Art Center where it can be viewed by the fans of the late iconic country singer regarded by millions as a national treasure.

The American Society of Portrait Painters selected Ernie to exhibit his work at the society's annual international exhibit. He was further honored when his large Christmas ornament was selected to hang on the White House Christmas tree.

As I got to know Ernie and appreciate the depth of his knowledge and skill, it occurred to me that Ernie Norcia should have his own show on MLTV21, where I have been a producer/host for 15 years. I discussed it with Kevin Foedinger, our general manager, and he enthusiastically concurred. At first, Ernie was reluctant to consider sitting in front of a TV camera, teaching people in cyber space how to draw. He loves the tactile experience of classroom teaching and workshop instruction. How could he connect with an inanimate object, a TV camera staring at him? Nonetheless, I was convinced that once he got over the initial nervousness, Ernie the teacher would emerge. And he did. His first show, “Drawing with Ernie Norcia,” debuted as the first of its kind in the station's history. Ernie drew an egg and a ping pong ball in meticulous detail. Each sphere had sharply cut lines, connected by variegated shadows on a white backdrop. Ernie drew the basic images in short order, then spent the rest of the show making a series of small refinements that made the drawing come to life. Although he believes a drawing or painting should not have the realism of a photograph, Ernie's egg and ping pong ball looked as though they could be picked up from the page. Now an experienced TV host, Ernie has several ideas for future shows on Main Line Network that he hopes will inspire viewers to use their imaginations and enjoy the wonder of creation with a few pieces of charcoal. In the meantime, he continues to teach classes at the Wayne Art Center.
