Note from the Township Manager As 2015 slowly winds down, it has turned out to be a very exciting year. The Board of Commissioners has been extremely active in moving the Township forward on many fronts. The Board approved several beneficial Township projects; purchased property for a new police station, paved 20 Township roads, and even found a way to bring the Marple community together by holding the first annual Township Community Festival. On October 9th, 10th & 11th, the Township held its first annual Fall Community Festival at Veterans Park with great success. The Commissioners, taking the opportunity to bring the community together, revived the old Community Pride Day and transformed it into "3 days of fun, food and meeting your neighbors". (Yes, to the Woodstock generation, I borrowed some of that last sentence) And just like Woodstock, a pivotal moment in music history, the first annual Community Festival is poised to be a moment in Township history we all will remember. And we even had some rain! There were over 30 vendors offering all kinds of food, crafts, rides and games. Entertainment was provided by 2 music acts, DJ's and a magician and clown. From the smiles on everyone's face to the laughter heard when old and new friends met, the Festival was a hit. Municipalities and local officials are always looking for opportunities to engage and interact with their residents and bring the community together; The Commissioners hit it out of the park with the festival. Take a look at the Festival page in this newsletter for some pictures of the fun special thanks to our sponsors, vendors and patrons who made this a truly wonderful event! Now for some of the other projects the Board

moved f forward with. Visitors to the Township Building and Library will immediately notice the results of the lighting and HVAC Upgrade project. The new HVAC equipment better controls the climate in the building and has improved the air quality. The new LED lights throughout the building have made a drastic improvement, especially in the Library, and have reduced our energy costs. The project also included the installation of an emergency generator for the building which allows the building to be used as an emergency command center during emergency events, and a temporary area of refuge for residents if needed. There were also renovations made to the Township Administrative and Code Offices to improve and add additional workspace. The Township Commissioners meeting room also received a facelift. I would be remiss if I didn't give a shout out to the Township Public Works Department who undertook the interior office renovations, did an incredible job and saved the Township significantly on the cost of the renovations. As many of you experienced this year, both PECO and Aqua performed some extensive infrastructure work on many of our roads. The Township was able to negotiate with both companies to cover significant repaving costs on those roads. As a result, the Commissioners prudently authorized a $752,000 road resurfacing program without spending a lot of Township funds. The program included the paving of over 20 roads throughout the Township. Residents also were treated to the repaving of Marple Road, Cedar Grove Road and Paxon Hollow Road by Penn Dot this fall after last year's winter seriously damaged those roads.

In last spring's newsletter I noted that the Board of Commissioners purchased the property at 1001 Sussex Blvd for the future home of the Police Department. The Board has engaged Linn Architects of Media to prepare plans for the conversion of the building and to bid the project. The bids are due this month and the Board is hopeful that the bid prices will be very competitive so the project moves forward in 2016. The proposed plans for the police station are posted on the Township's website, if you're interested. The Township Public Works Department also rehabbed and upgraded several of our parks. New Ardmore Avenue Park received some much need new equipment that expands the play area and provides more opportunities for kids to have fun. At Veterans Park, the existing memorial benches were replaced with new weather resistant metal benches to not only provide places to relax but to make sure those dedicated benches continue to represent the memory of our loved ones. In Kent Park, the benches along the walking trail were replaced, the picnic gazebo roof was rebuilt and low lying areas of the park that were always wet were regraded. Finally, Ann Road Park also received new piece of play equipment and the existing equipment was painted as part of a local Eagle Scout's service project. I could continue to brag about the great things that have been accomplished this year but I think that you can easily see the results of the Commissioner's forward thinking, prudent spending and dedication to making Marple better. Information Regarding Business Privilege Tax, Mercantile Tax, And Local Services Tax In Marple Township Persons desiring to do business in Marple Township are required to obtain a business license and pay a Business Privilege Tax and/or Mercantile Tax. The annual license fee is $10.00 and must be obtained prior to commencing business operations. The Business Privilege Tax and Mercantile Tax are levied upon the privilege of doing business in or outside the Township. A person exercises the privilege of doing business by engaging in a commercial transaction or business activity to promote the sale of goods or services.

The Township Tax Ordinances do not require that a Person have a base of operations in the Township in order to be subject to one or more of these taxes; however, for ease of administration, the Township considers any entity with a base of operation in the Township to be subject to tax. "Base of operations" is a physical location used by the Taxpayer to conduct significant business activities. A Taxpayer with a single location is deemed to have a base of operations at that location. A home office is recognized as a base of operations if it is used for business, and no other base of operation is reasonably available to conduct business activities. The Business Privilege Tax rate is 1.5 mills ($1.50 per $1,000 of Gross Receipts). This includes all service, rental and other income such as dividends, interest or royalties. The Mercantile Tax rate is 1.0 mill ($1.00 per $1,000) on wholesale Gross Receipts and 1.5 mills ($1.50 per $1,000) on Gross Receipts. A tax return must be filed whether or not tax is due. In addition, individuals engaging in an occupation, trade or profession in Marple Township are required to pay Local Services Taxes. As an employer, you are required to deduct $52.00 annually from the wages of each employee with earned income and/or net profits from all sources connected to this municipality of more than $12,000 received in a calendar year. The tax is remitted quarterly. This tax also applies to self-employed individuals. We cared for your neighbors, your friends or even possibly you or your family. The 2015-2016 Marple Township Ambulance Corps (MTAC) subscription drive is now in progress. As a contributing member of our subscription program, you and your household do not incur any out of pocket expenses for our service. Once your insurance carrier has been billed or any appeals processed, the remaining balance of your bill is written off.* Our crews are ready to respond 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year. In 2014, MTAC responded to over 2,500 emergency

Rosemary Nocella Thanks Emergency Services for Saving Her Life Marple Township Emergency Services were dispatched to 200 block of Foxcroft Road Broomall, PA 19008 on March 13, 2015 at 20:45 hrs for an accident with entrapment. Upon arrival, personnel located a vehicle on a steep driveway with a person trapped underneath. First to arrive on scene was Marple Township Police Department officer Greg deSimone who immediately recognized the danger of the incident and placed his patrol car behind the vehicle to prevent the vehicle from rolling further down the inclined driveway. There was one patient, Rosemary Nocella, who became pinned under her vehicle on a steeply inclined driveway, when the vehicle rolled back upon her. The patient had a visible leg fracture. The patient had the front tire resting upon her pelvis/abdomen with her body bent back upon her other leg. Patient had visible facial trauma, with blood from her

nose and upper lip. Patient was conscious, alert and oriented. Working as a unit, the Marple Township Ambulance crews maintained patient care while the Broomall Fire Company was tasked with extricating the patient from beneath the vehicle. Using airbags and removing the wheel and tire, the Broomall Fire Company members lifted the vehicle from the patient. The patient was then able to be moved onto a long board.

On Tuesday September 15, 2015, Marple Township Ambulance Corps hosted a case study which detailed the events of Rosemary Nocella's life threatening injuries from a motor vehicle accident and her treatment to achieve full recovery. Rosemary thankfully survived her injuries and was able to participate in the Ambulance Corp's post-incident review and to thank her caregivers.

Rosemary was further assessed and treated during transport to landing zone, where she was air-lifted to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. Because of the Marple Township Ambulance Corps, the Marple Township Police Department and Broomall Fire Company, the patient survived her multiple critical injuries.

Broomall Fire Company News The Broomall Fire Company (BFC or Company 53) was established on January 8th, 1923 by a group of twenty-six men whose sole purpose was to establish fire protection for the growing Marple Township community. Today, BFC serves well over 24,000 citizens and protects an area of approximately 11 square miles, including a large stretch of Interstate 476. The current fire house is located on the corner of North Malin Road and West Chester Pike. There are over 90 members in the BFC with approximately 52 men and women designated as active firefighters. Our entire membership is 100% volunteer! Please feel free to stop by the station at any 2015 Fire Officers 2015 Administrative Officers time. Salt Alternatives For Treating Icy Sidewalks And Driveways Spreading rock salt (sodium chloride) on roads and driveways reduces ice formation, allowing for safer travel for pedestrians and motorists. Too much salt, however, can corrode metal on cars, damage gardens and trees, and pollute our local streams. All landowners can be part of the solution by using alternative products or by using salt at recommended times and rates.

cost several times as much as rock salt and can be difficult to find. This is a good solution for small areas in environmentally sensitive locations, such as floodplains. Other "chlorides": calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, potassium chloride Rock salt (sodium chloride) is not the only chloride product that can melt ice. These other products are generally more expensive than rock salt, but work better at low temperatures. Calcium chloride is the preferred choice over magnesium chloride, as it works at lower temperatures and is applied at a lower rate, leading to less chloride in our streams. Potassium chloride is considered safest for pets and plants, but is often more expensive and does not work well at lower temperatures. All chloride products contribute to pollutant loads in our streams and their use should be minimized.

There are several products that can be used instead of salt. Here are a few options to consider: Sand, clean kitty litter, and used coffee grounds - These products provide great traction. Sand can easily be swept up and disposed of afterwards, but kitty litter often creates mushy clumps. These products will absorb sunlight, contributing to melting and will not harm nearby plants and soil.

If rock salt is the only reasonable alternative for your property, remember: Remove as much ice and snow off paved surfaces as you can before applying salt to speed up melting A little salt can go a long way: Rock salt should be applied at about a handful per square yard Calcium chloride should be spread even thinner, about a handful for 3 square yards The air temperature matters. Rock salt is five times more effective at melting ice at 30oF than 20oF, and ineffective below 20oF. Calcium chloride is better for temperatures down to 0oF. Applying early can prevent ice crystals from forming and minimize the amount of salt used overall.

Ashes - For those with a wood burning fireplace, ashes are a great option. They provide a lot of traction and absorb sunlight, so will melt ice quickly on a sunny day. And they're free! Beet juice - Increasingly being used by highway departments on its own or mixed with salt, this safe and natural product allows ice to melt even when air temperatures are extremely cold. Potassium acetate, calcium magnesium acetate - Acetates are super-effective even at extremely low temperatures and are biodegradable. The drawback? Price. Winter Road Maintenance Snow Emergency

With winter just around the corner, here is some important information regarding the Township's Winter Road Maintenance and Snow Plowing Policies: The Public Works Department, in advance of a forecasted snow event, will pre-treat all Township roads with an anti-icing/ deicing salt brine solution. Plowing typically begins when at least two inches of sn ow can be measured on the road. The Township plow crew's goal is to keep a single lane of traffic open on every road in the Township, if possible, by making multiple passes on each road during the snow storm. Some primary or connector roads such as, Highland Avenue, New Ardmore Ave, Reed Rd, Crum Creek Roa d, Lovell Ave, Malin Road and all Snow Emergency Routes are given p ri or it y to allow for the passage of emergency vehicles and general traffic. Once the snow has stopped their goal is to have all Township roads and cul-de-sacs c l e a r e d curb to curb within 18-24 hours. PennDot is responsible for plowing all State Roads including West Chester Pike, Lawrence Road and Sproul Road. If you have to travel during a snowstorm, please drive carefully and keep alert for other vehicles, pedestrians and snow plows!

In order to facilitate the movement of traffic and allow Township snow plows to effectively travel and clear streets, the Township Manager will declare a Snow Emergency whenever snowfall is predicted to exceed three (3) inches. Residents will be notified through the Township's Code Red Notification Syste m when a Snow Emergency is declared. During a snow emergency, parking is prohibited on all roads designated as snow emergency routes. Parking is also prohibited on all cul-de-sacs or hanging over onto roads from driveways during a storm until the snow is cleared.

Shoveling Do not clear sidewalks until plowing equipment HAS PASSED, or your hard work may be for nothing! Township crews are not permitted to plow your driveway entrance. Throwing, shoveling or plowing snow from sidewalks or driveways into the street is strictly prohibited. All sidewalks must be cleared within 12 hours after snow stops falling. If more than 12 inches of snow falls, the time limit is extended to 48 hours. Driveways and Parking Lots - Dumping snow or ice onto Township property or streets, or plowing snow across a street is strictly prohibited. This offense is punishable by civil action, with a fine of up to $600.00. Finally, please be patient! Our plow crews work tirelessly through a snow storm to ensure that our roads are clear and safe. Protect Your ID During the Holiday Season What is identity theft?

Identity theft occurs when someone uses your personal identifying information such as your name, Social Security number, or credit card number - without your permission. ID theft is a crime. The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identities stolen each year. In fact, you or someone you know may have already experienced some form of identity theft. This crime takes many forms. Identity thieves may rent an apartment, obtain a credit card, or establish a telephone account in your name. You may not find out about the theft until you review your credit report or a credit card statement and notice charges you didn't makeor until you're contacted by a debt collector. Identity theft is serious. While some identity theft victims can resolve their problems quickly, others spend hundreds of dollars and many days repairing the damage to their good name and credit record. Some consumers victimized by identity theft may lose out on job opportunities, or be denied loans for education, housing or cars because of negative information on their credit reports. In rare cases, they may even be arrested for crimes they did not commit.

How do thieves steal an identity? Skilled identity thieves may use a variety of methods to get hold of your information, including: 1. Dumpster Diving. They rummage through trash looking for bills or other paper with your personal information on it. 2. Skimming. They steal credit/debit card numbers by using a special storage device when processing your card. 3. Phishing. They pretend to be financial institutions or companies and send spam or pop-up messages to get you to reveal your personal information. 4. Changing Your Address. They divert your billing statements to another location by completing a change of address form. 5. Old-Fashioned Stealing. They steal wallets and purses; mail, including bank and credit card statements; pre-approved credit offers; and new checks or tax information. They also steal personnel records, or bribe employees who have access. 6. Pretexting. They use false pretenses to obtain your personal information from

financial institutions, telephone companies, and other sources.

How can you find out if your identity was stolen? The best way to find out is to monitor your accounts and bank statements each month. Check your credit report on a regular basis. If you check your credit report regularly, you may be able to limit the damage caused by identity theft. Unfortunately, many consumers learn that their identity has been stolen after some damage has been done. You may find out when bill collection agencies contact you for overdue debts you never incurred. You may find out when you apply for a mortgage or car loan and learn that problems with your credit history are holding up the loan. You may find out when you get something in the mail about an apartment you never rented, a house you never bought, or a job you never held.

What should you do if your identity is stolen? Filing a police report, checking your credit reports, notifying creditors, and disputing any unauthorized transactions are some of the steps you must take immediately to restore your good name. A police report that provides specific details of the identity theft is considered an Identity Theft Report, which entitles you to certain legal rights when it is provided to the three major credit reporting agencies or to companies where the thief misused your information. An Identity Theft Report can be used to permanently block fraudulent information that results from identity theft, such as accounts or addresses, from appearing on your credit report. It will also make sure these debts do not reappear on your credit reports. Identity Theft Reports can prevent a company from continuing to collect debts that result from identity theft, or selling them to

In order for a police report to entitle you to the legal rights mentioned above, it must contain specific details about the identity theft. You should file an ID Theft Complaint with the FTC and bring your printed ID Theft Complaint with you to the police station when you file your police report. The printed ID Theft Complaint can be used to support your local police report to ensure that it includes the detail required. A police report is also needed to get copies of the thief's application, as well as transaction information from companies that dealt with the thief. To get this information, you must submit a request in writing, accompanied by the police report, to the address specified by the company for this purpose. Victims of identity theft should monitor financial records for several months after they discover the crime. Victims should review their credit reports once every three months in the first year of the theft, and once a year thereafter. Stay alert for other signs of identity theft. Don't delay in correcting your records and contacting all companies that opened fraudulent accounts. Make the initial contact by phone, even though you will normally need to follow up in writing. The longer the inaccurate information goes uncorrected, the longer it will take to resolve the problem. What can you do to help fight identity theft? A great deal! Awareness is an effective weapon against many forms identity theft. Be aware of how information is stolen and what you can do to protect yours, monitor your personal information to uncover any problems quickly, and know what to do when you suspect your identity has been stolen. Armed with the knowledge of how to protect yourself and take action, you can make identity thieves' jobs much more difficult. You can also help fight identity theft by educating your friends, family, and members of your community. The FTC has prepared a collection of easy-to-use materials to enable anyone regardless of existing knowledge about identity theft to inform others about this serious crime. Curbside Recycling Facts: Recycling is picked up EVERY Wednesday Collection begins at 7am rain or shine Have recycling at the curb the night before If a collection day falls on a holiday, recycling will be picked up the following Wednesday.

NEW BULK PICK-UP PROCEDURE! Any item that is not typical household trash is considered a bulk pick-up (e.g. white goods, wood, furniture). Bulk items are now collected weekly on your 2nd trash collection day (Thurs or Fri). The fee for the pickup is $10.00 an item (TV's are $30) and must be paid 2 days prior to the scheduled pickup. Garbage must be drained of all liquids before being placed in containers for collection. Broken Glass, syringes and other sharp objects must be disposed of in a container that will properly hold the contents. Animal Feces must be disposed of in water tight plastic bags that will properly hold the contents. All refuse receptacles must be maintained in good condition and should not have ragged or sharp edges. Refuse must be placed in containers of metal or of substantial plastic construction; NO loose trash will be collected. Containers filled with contents shall not exceed 50 pounds in weight and shall be placed adjoining the curb line in such manner as not to obstruct passage on the sidewalk. Only grass clippings and garden/flower bed waste placed in trash bags will be accepted with your regular trash.

SEWER BLOCKAGES For all sewer blockages please contact the Township Building at 610-356-4040 during normal working hours (8AM 4:30PM). If your problem should occur after working hours or on the weekend please dial 911. Homeowners with public sewers should review their homeowner's insurance policies regarding sewer back-up claims. The rules of law under Pennsylvania Political Subdivision Tort Claim Act make it difficult for the Township to be held liable for sewer back-ups.

LEAF BURNING IS PROHIBITED! Leaves can be raked to the curb for Township collection or composted in your back yard. NO bagged leaves will be accepted. Information on how to compost is available in the Township Building. The schedule for leaf pickup is available at the Township Building, on the community channel & the Township website.

HAZARDOUS WASTE DO NOT PLACE HAZARDOUS WASTE IN YOUR TRASH! Hazardous waste is any household product labeled poisonous, toxic, flammable, caustic, corrosive, reactive, explosive or a combustion of these characteristics. Look for warnings or skull and crossbones on the label. Contact the Delaware County Solid Waste Authority at 610-892-9627 for a list of Hazardous Waste collection dates, times & drop off sites.

YARD WASTE

Yard waste is collected at curbside for two weeks in the fall and two weeks in the spring. No grass clippings or garden/flower bed waste will be accepted. same ritual in the case of the wife of a famous chief. We may, therefore, reasonably conclude that our skeleton was that of a woman of importance, perhaps a chief's wife. Apparently the shelter was not used after the burial site was established, which is another Indian custom.

Frank Sterling at Indian Cave circa 1943 The American Indian is Pennsylvania's most ancient inhabitant. His antecedents, stretching back over millenniums of prehistory, have become recognizable, within limits, through the probing of archeology. Archeology has estimated his historical era. The earliest is defined as Paleo-Indian, 18,000 to 8,000 years ago; the next as Archaic, 8,000 to 3,000 years ago; the last era was Woodland, starting at about 1,000 B.C., and carrying on to the arrival of the European in America, 400 years ago. Here in Marple, an archeological site helps to tell the story of local Native Americans. Along Langford Run, a tributary of Darby Creek, which runs adjacent to the lower portion of Langford Road and only a short distance south of West Chester Pike, is a small region of very rough rocky terrain. It was in this area that in 1943 that J. Frank Sterling, of Broomall, an amateur archeologist, who spent his weekends searching for arrowheads, and digging at promising place's discovered the complete skeleton of what he thought to be an Indian woman in a rock shelter close to Langford Road, in an area known as Kemble's Rocks. Pennsylvania and informed them of the find and the University sent Archeologist Dr. Mary Butler to assist and advise them on the proper procedures on handling the discovery. The skeleton was buried at a very slight depth and the remains positioned doubled up, lying on its right side, the head to the southeast. The bones were studied by Dr. J. Lawrence Angel of Jefferson Medical College who determined that the deceased was a woman of about thirty-seven years of age, with the general characteristics of the Lenape Indians, but naturally with some individual peculiarities. She was about 5'3" tall and had arthritis of the upper vertebrae, perhaps as a result of much burden-bearing. Probably the most interesting feature of this burial site was the fact that traces of a hole left by a large post, about a foot in diameter, were found about twenty inches beyond the skeleton head. The best reports available on the life of the Lenape Indians were written by two Moravian Missionaries, Loskiel and Heckwelder , who lived with the Lenape after they had moved to Ohio toward the end of the eighteenth century. Loskiel wrote that "At the head of the corpse, which always lies toward the east, a tall post is erected pointing out who is buried there." With the passage of the Indian Claims Commission Act the skeletal remains had to be returned to the Lenape tribe for proper burial. A tribal group from the Allentown area agreed to take the remains for this purpose. Upon close examination, the tribe's opinion was that these were not, in fact, the remains of an Indian woman and therefore, had them buried in a Baptist Cemetery near Allentown. They based their opinion of the facts. She was missing some teeth, unusual for a Native American at that time, there were no grave goods associated with the remains, and there was evidence of a light accumulation of lime on the skeleton. The Native American Heritage Museum in Allentown, where most of the artifacts reside, has been actively seeking opportunities to have the remains disinterred in order to be studied to determine its true heredity. The question remains, was this woman a member of the Lenape Tribe? Was she a notable person of her tribe? Were these rock outcroppings along Langford Run a more permanent settlement than just a seasonal hunting ground? Regardless of these unanswered questions, Marple's history remains fascinating.

Dr. Frank Johnston, Professor of Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania, University Museum, Philadelphia, who has examined the skeleton in detail, stated, that death may have occurred 500 to 1,000 years ago. Mr. Sterling reconstructed several large clay pots from shards found under these rock shelters and gave them to Marple Library along with the skeletal remains for display, where they remained for a considerable amount of time.

A Look Back: A snapshot of Marple's past Did you ever wonder about those stone Welcome to Marple Signs on West Chester Pike? Were they always there? Did they magically appear? Who was responsible for their design and installation? Well wonder no more! The Dedication Address given by Gerald J. Connors, Sr., then President of the Township Board of Commissioners at the dedication of the Welcome to Marple Stone Markers on May 19, 1979 says it all.

Good Morning. Our purpose this morning is not only to dedicate the two markers which welcome people to Marple Township but more importantly, to express our appreciation to a citizen, who through his generosity and civic mindedness gave a wonderful gift to his community. Mr. James Gallagher's gift exemplifies what a citizen can do for his community. People, like Mr. Gallagher, who give of themselves, whether it is a gift such as this or the volunteering of time to a community organization are what make a community such as ours such a good place to live.

As one drives along West Chester Pike, one notices that no signs marking the entrance into a township are more handsome than these. While on a trip to California in the summer of 1976, Mr. and Mrs. Gallagher noticed welcome signs in the town of Claremont very much like the ones we now have. Upon returning from their trip, Mr. Gallagher went to the Municipal Building to suggest that Marple Township erect similar markers. He was told at the time that such an undertaking would be too expensive. Mr. Gallagher then offered to pay the cost of construction and wrote Claremont to get the plans for the markers. Using the money given by Mr. Gallagher, the Township began to construct the markers in October of 1976. However, before the construction was completed, Mr. Gallagher died suddenly on October 25th. The completion of these markers and their dedication today expresses the Township's appreciation for this contribution to our community.

In the mid 80's, the Township Public Works Department relocated the west bound Welcome Sign due to the construction of the Blue Route interchange and in 2000, the former Marple Business and Professional Association donated new signage for the stone bases. For close to 40 years now, Mr. Gallagher's gift greets those coming into the Township. You have to wonder if somewhere, each time someone reads those four words: "Welcome to Marple Township", he smiles, proud of his Township!

In fact, Mr. Gallagher's contribution went well beyond his financial support for these markers. As a real estate businessman and land developer, Mr. Gallagher's work gave shape to a large part of the present physical environment of Marple Township. Throughout his career, Mr. Gallagher was a member of the Delaware County Board of Realtors, and during the early 1960's was President of the Better Business Bureau in Broomall. Ten Tree Questions Most Frequently Asked by Residents 1. What are the white pails sitting under newly planted trees for? These pails are watering devices to help recently planted young trees get established. Volunteers who have adopted the trees fill the pails once a week. If there is a dry spell, they fill them twice a week. The pails each hold roughly 5 gallons of water so it is easy to track how much water has been given. It drips slowly through small holes drilled in the bottom of the pail. They control the flow so the water is able to soak in, rather than run off. 2. Why are black plastic flower pots installed at the base of young tree trunks in our park? The black plastic pots that encircle the base of trunks of recently planted trees protect the tender bark from injury by weed trimmers and mowers that come too close to their root zones. These wounds can kill a young tree in a matter of months. 3. When do I need to wrap deer protection tubes or fencing around young tree trunks? When can I take it off? Tubes or some sort of fencing protects the tender bark of young trees from damage by deer. In the late summer when mating season begins bucks rub their heads against the soft bark of young trees to release pheromones. It is important to install trunk protection on your young trees in late August. You can remove the trunk protection any time after mid-January. 4. How long are the supporting stakes and ties supposed to be on a newly planted tree? If you plant the tree in the spring, leave the stakes and ties in place through the following spring until June. If you plant the tree in the fall, leave the stakes and ties in place through the next fall and winter until the following Junefor a full year and one-half. Every few months check them to be sure the ties are not

knotted too tightly around the expanding tree trunk. 5. What's the most common mistake people make when planting trees? Planting them too deeply! When a tree is properly planted you can see the beginning of the roots where they transition from trunk bark to root tissue. This root flare must remain visible above the soil level to assure that, as the roots grow and spread out beneath the soil, they have access to oxygen in the soil. (If your tree has tangled roots from being in a pot for too long, take time to spread them out so that they lie correctly in the planting hole.) Then follow the Rule of 3's for mulching. Start mulching 3 inches away from the trunk; spread it in a 3 foot wide ring. Limit the thickness of the mulch layer to 3 inches. 6. When is the best time to prune my trees? Prune dead or broken branches of shade trees any time. If you aim to correct structural problems wait until the tree is dormant and its leaves have droppedfrom December through Marchdepending on the tree species. This is a good time to prune if you are encouraging tree growth as well. It is easier to see what you are doing after the leaves have dropped. Wait until June if you want to slow down tree growth. 7. What kinds of trees are good for damp areas in my yard? Black gum (Nyssa sylvatica) Sweet gum (Liquidambar styractiflua) Swamp red maple (Acer rubra) River birch (Betula nigra) Sweetbay magnolia (Magnolia virginiana) Willow (Salix) 8. I hear that I can buy a tree from the MTC. Is that true? Yes! Re-Leaf Marple is a program that we developed to help residents acquire landscape trees at a reduced price. You can choose a tree

from our list of several species. A member of the Tree Commission will visit your property to help you choose an appropriate site and then to plant the tree. Family members must be present to watch the planting procedure. You will be asked to sign an agreement which includes a commitment to water and protect the tree from deer damage. One sign that a tree may be dying is that it does not drop its dead leaves in autumn. The brown foliage hangs on through the winter and into the new growing season. Foliage that wilts for no obvious reason during the season and fades from green to yellow, then brown, is another indicator. Also, a dying tree will shed bark or develop mushrooms on its trunk or surface roots. When in doubt, call a certified arborist to examine your trees. 10. I love trees! How can I become a volunteer for the Tree Commission? We welcome anyone who is interested in helping the tree commission fulfill its mission to protect and restore Marple's community forest. Our volunteers help out with events such as the annual Arbor Day Observance, planning lectures, planting and watering trees, and publicity. Defending Marple's Forest Dealing with the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB)

Ash tree threat An unprecedented threat to our community forest has arrived in Delaware County. Having already devastated forests in Michigan and throughout the mid-West, the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) has been inexorably moving east for several years, leaving millions of destroyed ash trees in its wake.

2. Develop a plan if you have one or more ash trees. Use a triage system: identify any healthy ashes on the property that are important to the landscape; note other uninfected ash trees; then note any ashes that show signs of infection.

This shiny deep green, half- inch long adult borer seeks out ash trees to lay its eggs. They develop into larvae which ravage the trees' tender tissue beneath their bark. The borer is a danger to our community forest because ash trees are common in home landscapes, parks, school and church campuses and commercial properties here in Marple. Trees attacked by this borer have virtually a 100 percent mortality rate. Once a tree is infected, there is no way to save it. Marple Tree Commission is developing a strategy to confront this menace and limit its destruction of trees on Township property. It is critically important for homeowners to also have a plan to manage this serious assault on ash trees on their private property. It is important to be pro-active, there is no time to lose.

3. Immediately cut down infected, dying ash trees. Identify and cut down any infected trees as soon as possible. Do not wait for them to die, because ashes are brittle and rapidly disintegrate dangerously when they are dead. 4. Arrange for protection of your healthy ash trees worth saving. Wonderful big ash trees on your property that are healthy and contribute beauty, shade, wildlife shelter, air quality, stormwater control and climate moderation to your landscape, are worth protecting. They must be treated with insecticide before the EAB infects them. (See below) 5. Choose an option for handling small, uninfected trees. Since, over the next few years the borer will kill any ash tree not treated, you have really only two options for your other, less significant but healthy ash trees. Cut down your remaining healthy ashes now to avoid harboring the borer. They will eventually have to be taken down anyway. Or, wait for the borer to arrive and infect them, then have them removed.

Keep your eyes out for the shiny green, adult borer. Protecting ash trees You must protect your larger healthy ash trees immediately, or you will eventually lose them to this borer. Consult a certified arborist about pesticide treatments available to prevent Emerald Ash Borer infestation. Insecticides must be applied before the trees are infected and must be renewed either yearly or every other year, depending on the product and type of treatment used. Some treatments involve drenching the soil or injections into the soil beneath the tree, others involve injections into the base of the tree trunk. Yes, having a large ash tree treated to prevent EAB will likely cost some serious money. However, not as much as having to have arborists come to take down a large tree that has died of EAB infection a few years from now. In that case further costs will involve losing the wonderful tree canopy that has protected your landscape, reduced your air conditioning bill and sheltered the wildlife that lives there. There will also be the cost of purchasing and replanting a young replacement tree. In some cases arborists will lower the price if several trees in small area are to be treated, so check with your neighbors to see if they are considering this option.
