Senior Citizen Advisory Commission Mission Statement: To enhance and support the lives of senior residents of Marple by advising township officials about their concerns and interests, by creating a forum where they can meet and socialize and by offering programs and activities for their enjoyment. Established in 2011 to serve as an advisory board to the Board of Commissioners on senior related issues in the Township.. Seniors have a chance to have a VOICE with their local Government Officials. The Senior Advisory Commission meets the 3rd Wednesday of each month, 1:00 PM at the Marple Township Building, 227 S. Sproul Road, Broomall, PA. All are welcome. Marple Township Police - Distracted Driving Distracted Driving Texting while Driving By Chief Tom Murray Distracted driving is defined as driving without your full attention focused on the road. This can occur anytime drivers remove their hands from the wheel or look away from the road even for a second. In those brief moments where our attention is diverted, accidents are more likely occur at a rate of eight times more likely than for a driver who is paying attention. Below is a list of some of the more common driving distractions: Eating, drinking or smoking Adjusting the radio Talking to other passengers in the vehicle Texting while driving Emailing while driving Reading or writing Talking on a cell phone Personal grooming (e.g. putting on makeup) Why do drivers engage in these behaviors? Simply put we believe that we are in control and nothing will happen to us. The statistics however tell a different story. In 2016 alone, 3,450 people were killed and 391,000 were injured in vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers. The proliferation of cell phone usage is the main culprit. We somehow have gotten to the point that we cannot survive without our cell phone in our hand. Whether we are texting, reading a text, or just talking on the phone, Americans always seem to have this device in their hand. Texting for example, can take your eyes off the road for up to 5 seconds. That does not seem like a long time but at 55 miles per hour you will travel the length of a football field during that 5 seconds. That's like closing your eyes while driving for the next 300 feet. You would consider that crazy and would never close your eyes and drive for 300 feet, but when you text that's exactly what you are doing. In Pennsylvania it is a violation of the Vehicle Code, section 3316, to text, instant message, or email, or use any other form of written communication. These violations are primary offenses and thus allow a police officer to stop and issue a citation should the officer observe the violation taking place. The penalty upon conviction of such an 8

offense is $50.00 plus costs which amount to $116.50, for a total of $166.50. This is a rather steep fine and one I am sure you do not want to pay. The easy way to avoid this is to just put your phone down. If you are expecting an important message or need to text someone, pull over, park and then go ahead and send or read you message.

Remember no matter what their age, they are always watching and will repeat the behaviors that they observe.

Driving a motor vehicle is a complex task. We must devote our full attention in order to operate in a safe manner. We owe it to ourselves, our families and the rest of the motoring public to devote our full attention to our driving when we are behind the wheel. The last thing any of us want is to become a statistic, so please remain focused when driving, and keep your eyes on the road and your

Support young and newly planted trees from strong winter winds by staking them or setting up barriers of burlap (never plastic!) around them. Knock burdensome snow from the boughs of evergreen trees and large shrubs carefully. Start with the lower branches first. Use a broom to gently bump the snow off, then repeat the process moving upward to the higher branches and then the top. Finally, redo the bottom branches to remove snow that has accumulated on them during this process.

other landscape plants are not typically damaged by bitter cold, frozen ground or lots of snow. More likely damage is caused by bright, glaring sunlight which reflects off snow, the glossy leaf surfaces of nearby evergreen plants, or even nearby windows or car surfaces. It dries evergreen foliage and tender bark of nearby woody plants. Also, strong winter winds sometimes whip tree branches around, which damage nearby plants if they break and fall. Ironically, mild winters can be more damaging than harsh ones. Fluctuating temperatures cause alternating freeze and thaw of soil around tree and shrub roots. As the soil expands and contracts, it disturbs roots and may actually heave recently planted trees out of the soil altogether.

What to do?

Be proactive. Check your property for potential problems. If you have a tree that has issues with dead branches, exposed roots, fungus on the roots or lower trunk, consider getting advice from a certified arborist about the potential for problems over the winter. Protect the thin tender bark and stems of young trees and shrubs from rodent damage. Voles, mice chipmunks and rabbits seek cover under deep mulch or groundcover plantings such as ivy and pachysandra that crowd the tree trunks. They gnaw tree bark tissue when their normal food sources are under snow or not available. Clear away the groundcovers to a couple of feet from plant stems and spread only an inch or two over the area. Prevent deer damage to trees with protective wire cages. Make them high enough to protect stems and branches if there is deep snow that deer can stand on and reach higher branches. 14

Never try to remove ice from tree branches or to free trees, such as birches, that are bent over by snow or ice and attached to the ground. Let the ice melt and release the tree naturally. Set out small flags on 2 or 3 foot tall stakes or posts along the edges of your driveway and any walkways that you will use during the winter. These will provide guidelines for shoveling or plowing so that you do not mistakenly damage lawn edges, tree root systems and snow covered planted areas. Preparing For Winter

Salt Alternatives For Treating Icy Sidewalks And Driveways Ashes For those with a wood burning fireplace, ashes are a great option. They provide a lot of traction and absorb sunlight, so will melt ice quickly on a sunny day. And they're free! Beet juice Increasingly being used by highway departments on its own or mixed with salt, this safe and natural product allows ice to melt even when air temperatures are extremely cold.

Spreading rock salt (sodium chloride) on roads and driveways reduces ice formation, allowing for safer travel for pedestrians and motorists. Too much salt, however, can corrode metal on cars, damage gardens and trees, and pollute our local streams. All landowners can be part of the solution by using alternative products or by using salt at recommended times and rates. There are several products that can be used instead of salt. Here are a few options to consider: Sand, clean kitty litter, and used coffee grounds These products provide great traction. Sand can easily be swept up and disposed of afterwards, but kitty litter often creates mushy clumps. These products will absorb sunlight, contributing to melting and will not harm nearby plants and soil.

Potassium acetate, calcium magnesium acetate Acetates are super-effective even at extremely low temperatures and are biodegradable. The drawback? Price. They cost several times as much as rock salt and can be difficult to find. This is a good solution for small areas in environmentally sensitive locations, such as floodplains. Other â€œchloridesâ€?: calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, potassium chloride Rock salt (sodium chloride) is not the only chloride product that can melt ice. These other products are generally more expensive than rock salt, but work better at low temperatures. Calcium chloride is the preferred choice over magnesium chloride, as it works at lower temperatures and is applied at a lower rate, leading to less chloride in our streams. Potassium chloride is considered safest for pets and plants, but is often more expensive and does not work well at lower temperatures. All

chloride products contribute to pollutant loads in our streams and their use should be minimized.

If rock salt is the only reasonable alternative for your property, remember: Remove as much ice and snow off paved surfaces as you can before applying salt to speed up melting A little salt can go a long way: Rock salt should be applied at about a handful per square yard Calcium chloride should be spread even thinner, about a handful for 3 square yards The air temperature matters. Rock salt iso five times more effective at melting ice at 30 F than 20oF, and ineffective below 20oF. Calcium chloride is better for temperatures down to 0oF. Applying early can prevent ice crystals from forming and minimize the amount of salt used overall.

Public Works (Trash & Recycling)

RECYCLING The recycling program is single stream so all recycling can be placed in the same container. You may still place paper (bundled & tied) next to your recycling can. Additional Blue cans may be purchased at the Township Building for $20. Overflow of paper may be dropped off at the paper dumpster located at the former Marple Grade School property on West Chester Pike & Malin Road, across from the Fire House. Curbside Recycling Facts: Recycling is picked up EVERY Wednesday Collection begins at 7am rain or shine Have recycling at the curb the night before If a collection day falls on a holiday, recycling will be picked up the following Wednesday.

TRASH REMOVAL Garbage must be drained of all liquids before being placed in containers for collection. Broken Glass, syringes and other sharp objects must be disposed of in a container that will properly hold the contents. Animal Feces must be disposed of in water tight plastic bags that will properly hold the contents. All refuse receptacles must be maintained in good condition and should not have ragged or sharp edges. Refuse must be placed in

containers of metal or of substantial plastic construction; NO loose trash will be collected. Containers filled with contents shall not exceed 50 pounds in weight and shall be placed adjoining the curb line in such manner as not to obstruct passage on the sidewalk. Only grass clippings and garden/flower bed waste placed in trash bags will be accepted with your regular trash.

LEAVES LEAF BURNING IS PROHIBITED! Leaves can be raked to the curb for Township collection or composted in your back yard. NO bagged leaves will be accepted. Information on how to compost is available in the Township Building. The schedule for leaf pickup is available at the Township Building, on the community channel & the Township website. YARD WASTE Yard waste is collected at curbside for two weeks in the spring and fall. Yard waste drop off site is also open each spring and fall. No grass clippings or garden/flower bed waste will be accepted. NEW BULK PICK-UP PROCEDURE! Any item that is not typical household trash is considered a bulk pick-up (e.g. white goods,

wood, furniture). Bulk items are now collected weekly on your 2nd trash collection day (Thurs or Fri). The fee for the pickup is $10.00 an item and must be paid 2 days prior to the scheduled pickup. The fee for a TV is $30. If you have a question please feel free to contact the Code Enforcement Secretary at 610-356-4040 Ext. 512 SEWER BLOCKAGES For all sewer blockages please contact the Township Building at 610-356-4040 during normal working hours (8AM 4:30PM). If your problem should occur after working hours or on the weekend please dial 911. Homeowners with public sewers should review their homeowner's insurance policies regarding sewer back-up claims. Marple Township is not responsible for damages caused by sewer backups except under limited circumstances provided by the PA Political Subdivision Tort Claim Act. DO NOT PLACE HAZARDOUS WASTE IN YOUR TRASH! Hazardous waste is any household product labeled poisonous, toxic, flammable, caustic, corrosive, reactive, explosive or a combustion of these characteristics. Look for warnings or skull and crossbones on the label. Contact the Delaware County Solid Waste Authority at 610892-9627 for a list of Hazardous Waste collection dates, times & drop off sites.

DID YOU KNOW?

That certain types of Biomedical Waste, including infectious, pathological, chemotherapeutic and nuclear/radiation treatment waste, may not be disposed of in your regular household trash. These types of waste, typically found on soiled bandages, used drug containers, sheets and disposable diapers, contain harmful substances that may present a hazard to our collection workers and set off radiation monitoring alarms at the facility that receives the Township's trash. When this happens, the trash truck has to be quarantined for a certain period of time and an attempt made to find the biomedical/hazardous material within the truck. If the material can be identified it is separated and disposed of at an approved facility licensed to accept hazardous/biomedical waste. The Township does attempt to contact the property owner who deposited the waste to let them know of the situation. If the waste can't be identified then the entire contents of the trash truck has to be disposed of at the approved facility. This is a time consuming and costly event. A Look Back: A Snapshot of Marpleâ€™s Past Hayti Cemetery Mystery In the southern portion of the Township, under the 476 overpass which crosses over Old Marple Rd., sits an all-but-forgotten graveyard of the former African Union Methodist Church, the second church built in Township. The Church served as the focus of the areas' Haitian community as early as 1839 when a small church was built and a cemetery established on the high ground nearby. For many years the Hayti congregation worshipped in the church and buried their dead in the adjoining cemetery. In 1892, the church was destroyed by fire and the congregation moved to the now Trinity Union American Methodist Episcopal Church in Media. Headstones in the cemetery indicate that burials were made in the cemetery as late as 1918 and information available seems to indicate that the cemetery was abandoned sometime in the 1930's. Over the years, the cemetery it has fallen into obscurity, made even more inconspicuous and mysterious by the construction of the Blue Route in the late 1980's. Most travelers drive right past without recognizing it's there. Even long time residents don't know anything about the cemetery. There is some historical information available but it's limited. What we do know are the names of some of the individuals laid to rest by their loved ones on that hillside. With 127 known graves in total, 29 are identified. Most with broken and badly worn headstones and some with just a field stone as a grave marker. What is amazing is that many of those buried there proudly served their country in the Grand Army of the Republic during the Civil War. Most likely felled on some distance battlefield of the Civil War and brought home to rest in a grave identified only by a marker bearing the insignia G.A.R. Forever unknown to a grateful nation. The cemetery is an important part of Marple's history, not only just because it was a part of the second church established in the Township or that Civil War soldiers are buried there but because those interred there lived, worked, worshipped and died in our community. They added to what we are today: A strong, vibrant and prosperous Township. Over the years, veterans groups, Boy Scouts and community members have made attempts to clean up the cemetery to pay respect to those interred and preserve a small portion of our history. Each Memorial Day you will see American Flags placed on each known soldier's grave by a local veteran to honor their service to our Country. The cemetery and those buried there deserve our respect. The home of an indentured servant who became a landowner, and like the American dream, the house has endured over 300 years. The Thomas Massey House is one of the oldest English Quaker homes in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. It is on the National Register of Historical Places, and the Historical American Building Survey. The house is open for tours each Sunday from the last Sunday in April until the last Sunday in October between 1pm and 4pm with the exception of holiday weekends or by appointment.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! The 1696 Thomas Massey House is currently seeking volunteers who would like to be involved in the preservation and presentation of our local history.
