The Board's goals for the year include: Formation of an open space/trails/sidewalk committee and an emergency services committee; contract negotiations with police and non-uniformed workers; targeted traffic improvements; continued economic development outreach; Audubon School use study; increased civic involvement; and residential zoning code update.

The race features an accurate, measured 5K course and 2mile walk starting at the Lower Providence Fire Company, 3199 Ridge Pike in Eagleville and continuing through Eagleville Park and Township streets. The 5K run begins at 8:30 a.m., followed by the walk at 8:35 a.m. Prizes will be awarded to the top male and female overall and to the top two males and females in several age groups. Volunteers Needed for Eagleville Park Restoration Days Volunteers of all ages and interests are needed to help identify and remove invasive plants in Eagleville Park. It's a great way to get involved in protecting your local park and ideal for students/groups looking for community service work. Restoration Days are being held the third Saturday of each month through October from 10:00 a.m. until noon at Eagleville Park, 100 Parklane Drive, Eagleville. The project leader is John Zollers. Volunteers meet at the amphitheater at the bottom of the walking path below the basketball courts. Volunteers will receive instruction on properly identifying both targeted exotic-invasive species and desirable native species and the significance of each. Tools will be provided. The goal of the work is the eradication of exotic-invasive plant species, restoration of eroded streams, and replanting of native species in the park. Aggressive nonnative species can spread rapidly, choke out native vegetation, and compromise natural habitats. These plants are difficult and costly to control. Francesco A. Mascaro Memorial Fields and Community Park Dedication
Supervisors Jason Sorgini and Peter MacFarland were among the many who were on hand for the dedication ceremony for the Francesco A. Mascaro Memorial Fields and Community Park. Built by the Mascaro family and donated to the Township, the new park at 2759 Woodland Ave. features ball fields, press box, pavilion, a playground and walking trail. Francesco Mascaro was one of the five brothers who own J.P. Mascaro & Sons and passed away in 2013.

From the Police Department: Social Media Safety: What You and Your Kids Need to Know
The world today is about electronic connections. They enable all of us to stay connected with old friends and to meet new ones that may be thousands of miles away. But while electronic and social media can help kids, there is also the potential for harm. The Good Keeps them connected with friends and family Helps them find ways to volunteer or get involved with a campaign, nonprofit, or charity Enhances creativity through the sharing of ideas, music, and art Enables them to meet and interact with others who share similar interests anywhere in the world Enhances their learning experience The Bad Identity theft using personal information taken from the web Predatory behavior from social media contacts 39% of teens admitted to lying about their age to gain access to websites 30% of teens say they've received online advertising that was inappropriate for their age Cyberbullying / threats of violence 17% of teens say they've been contacted online by someone they didn't know in a way that made them feel scared or uncomfortable Recent studies show that 9 out of 10 teens post photos of themselves online or use their real names on their profiles; 8 out of 10 reveal their birthdates and interests; and 7 out of 10 post their school name and the town where they live. Actions like this can make kids easy targets for online predators and others who might want to cause them harm. Please remind your children that once something is posted it will forever remain posted. Positive postings are not an issue. It is those postings that are considered bad that will never truly go away and they may become a factor for them, or anyone of us, for years to come. Stress to your children that poor choices involving the use of electronic media have consequences. These can be parental or school discipline for minor infractions. However, as we see an upward trend in cyberbullying, threats related to the school environment and illicit photographs involving youth in the township, we want them to know that being arrested is a real consequence and it has already happened. A Partnership for Protection The Lower Providence Township Police Department and the Methacton School District maintain a close working relationship when it comes to the safety of our children.

We will continue to support each other to cooperatively investigate and address any mutual issue of concern. If you have a question or a concern, please contact us. Here are some tips we've assembled on how to keep your kids safe online and while using their electronic media: 1. Always remember it is YOUR device. If you buy a phone for your child, then you are allowing your child to use your phone. No matter what your child tells you, the phone is your property. You own it. You have a right to take it back, to review what your child is doing with it, to turn off the data, and even turn off the service if you feel your child cannot be responsible for the phone. Since it is your phone, it is important that you make sure you know how to use it. 2. Find out what sites your child is using and learn about them. Snapchat, Twitter, Peach, Instagram, Yik Yak or Facebook new social networks are emerging, and existing ones are changing all the time. As a parent it can be hard to keep up! Try to find out what your child is using and how they're using it, talk to them about why they like a particular platform and let them show you how it works. 3. Keep the conversation going, talk about the dangers. Educate your child about the potential dangers and consequences of social media misuse, many won't be aware of the potential pitfalls. Using real life examples can help to illustrate possible issues and are a great starting point for an open discussion. Also, take the chance to let them educate you! Discuss together the positives of social media. It's a great opportunity to let children show you their world, even if you don't always understand it.
Remember that most social media sites have a minimum age requirement of 13 to start a profile. Ensure that parental controls for computers and mobile devices are up to date so that you can monitor what sites are being accessed. 6. Warn about inappropriate texts and pictures. Inform your children of the very real legal implications of sending nude pictures of themselves to someone or forwarding a sexually suggestive picture that they may have received from a classmate or sending threatening text messages or emails. Remind children that once you hit send, you can't take it back and it truly never goes away. 7. Find out more. 4. Establish usage rules or guidelines. Depending on your child's age, you want to think about some guidelines and rules for usage. You may have some platforms that you don't want them to use at all or decide that you simply want to set a time limit for usage. Again, discuss with your child and try to find a set of guidelines they are happy with while instilling a positive set of boundaries. 5. Be aware of privacy settings. When some apps update, the privacy settings can automatically change. Make sure you encourage your child to check them regularly and that you do this with them.

Stay Informed With ReadyMontco Emergency Alerts Lower Providence Township now participates in ReadyMontco, Montgomery County's free emergency alert system. The Township uses the systemto send emergency alerts via text, email and
phone. You need to sign up for ReadyMontco even if you've received Township alerts in the past. ReadyMontco is the official source for notifications about emergencies, severe weather, crime alerts and disasters in the Township and throughout Montgomery County. When you register, you can choose your preferred delivery methods and
messages can be targeted by geographical area or a person's special needs. To sign up, go to ReadyMontco.org and click on the Sign Up tab at the top of the page. You'll be prompted to enter basic contact information and choose the ways you'd like to be contacted. If you have a smart phone, you can download the Everbridge Mobile Member from the App Store on your iPhone or Android. Sign up is free, but your wireless carrier may charge you a fee to receive text messages on your cell phone or wireless device. Contact your carrier for information. The ReadyMontco registration process also contains a “My Information” tab. If you, a family member or someone you live with
has an access or functional need that requires assistance during an emergency, this page is especially important. It is strictly confidential and the information is used for planning for a large-scale emergency or disaster. You're are also encouraged to register with Smart911 to provide information that will help first responders in the event of a 911 call at your home. Register at www.smart911.com and fill out a questionnaire, providing as much or as little information as you choose. If a 911 call is received from your phone number, the information will be displayed for the call taker. The information is stored on a private and secure national database and only accessible when a 911 call triggers it. Vacation Home Checks The Lower Providence Township Police Department has for a number of years provided vacation home checks for residents and property owners. A police officer checks the property at least once per day in the absence of the resident. This service may be received by simply calling the Police Dispatch Center at (610) 539-5901 prior to the departure date and providing the dispatcher with the required information.

Optimist Club President Caitlin McCrane presented the award to Cpl. Slattery, a 20year veteran of the police department.
JOB WELL DONE - Jack Mulhall, outgoing executive director of the Methacton Youth Aid Panel, was recognized by the Board of Supervisors for his many years of dedicated service and contributions to the Lower Providence Police Department and the children of the Methacton School District. The program provides a second chance for non-violent juveniles who have committed a criminal offense, establishing local panels that encourage them to accept responsibility for their actions, while raising community awareness and involvement. A Message From The Township Fire Marshal The Danger of Overloaded Outlets and Power Strips The electrical system of many older homes is not properly equipped to respond to today's increased power demands. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), more than half of all homes in the U.S. are at least 30 years old. The wiring in many of these older homes was designed to handle around half of the electrical demands of today's families. According to the NFPA and the Electrical Safety Foundation International, electrical fires are one of the leading causes of structure fire annually. How can you prevent the dangers that can occur by overloading an outlet? Here are some tips: Never plug more than two appliances into an outlet at once or “piggyback” extra appliances on extension cords or wall outlets. Use only outlets designed to handle multiple plugs. Know the amount of power you're placing on an outlet or circuit. Some recommend each outlet or circuit should not exceed 1,500 watts. Major appliances (refrigerators, dryers, washers, stoves, air conditioners, etc.) should be plugged directly into their own wall outlet since they are heavy power users. If you find you are overloading an outlet or circuit in your home, you may need to contact a professional to help resolve the problem.
If an electrical fire does occur, call 911. Do not try to handle the fire yourself. Never try to extinguish an electrical fire with water. How to Use Extension Cords and Power Strips Using extension cords properly is critical to your safety. With continuous use over time, an extension cord can rapidly deteriorate, creating a potentially dangerous electric shock or fire hazard. The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) offers the following tips for staying safe from electric shock and electrical fires: Do not overload extension cords or allow them to run through water or snow on the ground. Do not substitute extension cords for permanent wiring. Do not run through walls, doorways, ceilings or floors. If cord is covered, heat cannot escape, which may result in a fire hazard. Do not use an extension cord for more than one appliance.
Look for Warning Signs If you have any of these signs of electrical system overload, you should have your home inspected by a professional:
A heavy reliance on extension cords is an indication that you have too few outlets to address your needs. Have additional outlets installed where you need them.
Lights often flicker, blink or dim momentarily Circuit breakers trip or fuses blow often Cords or wall plates are warm to the touch or discolored Crackling, sizzling or buzzing is heard from outlets
Multiple plug outlets must be plugged directly into mounted electrical receptacles; they cannot be chained together.

Make sure the extension cord or temporary power strip you use is rated for the products to be
plugged in and is marked for either indoor or outdoor use. The appliance or tool that you are using the cord with will have a wattage rating on it. Match this up with your extension cord, and do not use a cord that has a lower rating. Never use a cord that feels hot or is damaged in any way. Touching even a single exposed strand can give you an electric shock or burn. Never use three-prong plugs with outlets that only have two slots for the plug. Do not cut off the ground pin to force a fit. This defeats the purpose of a three-prong plug and could lead to an electrical shock. Never force a plug into an outlet if it doesn't fit. Use extension cords with polarized and/or three-prong plugs. Buy only cords approved by an independent testing laboratory, such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL), ETL-SEMKO (ETL) or Canadian Standards Association (CSA). News & Notes From The Public Works Department Road Improvements Slated for 2018
Yard Cleanup
The Township is continuing its infrastructure improvement efforts with the 2018 road improvement project. The Township will be paving 3.85 miles of roads this year. The Township is responsible for a total of 92 miles of roads in the Township. Allan Myers was awarded the base repair and asphalt overlay portion of the 2018 road improvement bid at a cost of $706,513.07. Recon Construction Services Inc. was awarded the cold mill recycling work at a cost of $202,611.65. A portion of the improvements where restoration is being completed in areas impacted by recent sanitary sewer main replacements will be funded by the Lower Providence Township Sewer Authority. Roads included in the 2018 project: Level Road (Lenape Drive to Yerkes Road) Sandpiper Road (Park Avenue to Shearwater Drive) Tomstock Road (Belmont Avenue to Woodland Avenue) Brimfield Road (Woodland Avenue to just past Sandown Road) Cardinal Road Wren Road Robin Lane (Off Egypt Road) Tomahawk Drive Shawnee Circle Roads included that were affected by the sewer line installation are: Kenney Road Oaklyn Avenue (Ridge Pike/Marilyn Avenue) Walker Lane (Summit Avenue/E. Yard waste, leaves and lawn clippings should be placed in open-top containers or in compostable bags and placed at the curb for pickup. Twigs and tree branches must be cut to 3-foot lengths and tied in bundles weighing no more than 50 pounds. Branches can be no longer than 3 feet in length and 3 inches in diameter. Yard waste collection is every Wednesday year-round. Please avoid blowing grass into the street when mowing your lawn. This promotes the growth of weeds and can shorten the life of the street and curbing. If you notice that there is not an adequate seal along the curb and paved portion of the road, please advise the Public Works Department, 610-635-3538 or 610-635-3537.

Sewer Authority News Sewer Line Replacement Work Removes I/I
The most recent Sewer Authority project that was done has proven to be very successful in removing inflow and infiltration (I/I) from the Sanitary Sewer System. I/I is clear water that enters the sewer system from a variety of sources. Infiltration occurs when groundwater seeps into sewer pipes through cracks, leaky pipe joints and/or deteriorated manholes which may cause sewage volumes to exceed design capacity.

CALLING ALL LOCAL BUSINESSES! Memorial trees, benches and Walk of Honor brick pavers are welcomed donations at sites within the Lower Providence Township Parks system and are special ways to honor the memory of a loved one.
If you or your family enjoy a particular park and wish to place a lasting memorial to a family member, friend or pet consider donating a tree or bench. Memorial brick pavers are added to the Walk of Honor in front of the Township's Veterans' Memorial located at the Administration Building. Memorial gift forms are available at the Administration Building or on-line at the Township website www.lptrec.com The Township must approve any wording that will appear on any plaques and/or bricks. Once the form is received by the Parks and Recreation Department, we will contact you to confirm your donation.
