LPPD, METHACTON SCHOOL DISTRICT PARTNER ON SCHOOL BUS SAFETY INITIATIVE Collaboration Includes Safety Tech Company BusPatrol The Lower Providence Township Police Department and Methacton School District have launched a new partnership dedicated to student safety with BusPatrol and the district's transportation provider, First Student. The district's school bus fleet will be equipped with stop-arm cameras to deter drivers from illegally passing stopped school buses in Lower Providence Township. The camera system is positioned to capture images of drivers and their vehicles if they pass a school bus while the stop arm is extended and flashing red lights are activated. The video will be reviewed by the Lower Providence Township Police Department before citations are issued.
“Safety within our community is our department's top priority, especially amongst our children. Deploying this new technology to increase driver awareness and deter reckless driving is, in my opinion, the most logical way to continue providing that safety to our children and community as a whole,” said Lower Providence Police Chief Mike Jackson. According to the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services, drivers across the U.S. are reported to blow past school buses 17 million times a year. Just one violation could cost a life. The BusPatrol program allows the school district to upgrade its current school bus safety technology at no cost to taxpayers. The technology, installation, and maintenance are all provided at zero cost to Methacton School District. BusPatrol's platform is entirely violator-funded and any additional revenue can be used to fund school bus safety initiatives. Pennsylvania state law requires drivers to stop at least 10 feet away from a stopped school bus with its red lights

flashing and stop-arm deployed. Drivers must stop for a school bus approaching in any direction to allow children to enter and exit the bus safety. The first violation for a driver captured by the stop-arm camera will result in a minimum penalty of $250.
BACK-TO-SCHOOL SAFETY With the school year underway, motorists need to be vigilant to avoid potentially tragic crashes and strong penalties as school buses return to the roads and transport children. Students are also exposed to traffic while waiting for buses or walking to the bus stop or school. Motorists are reminded to be cautious and alert when approaching a school bus stop and to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks. In addition to watching for school buses, motorists should be alert in school zones, which become hubs of vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Motorists are required to slow down to the posted speed limit of 15 mph in school zones. ANNUAL COMMUNITY AWARDS NOMINATIONS Nominations Sought for Annual Community Awards
The Lower Providence Township Board of Supervisors is accepting nominations for the annual Citizen, Volunteer and Business of the Year awards. Applications are due by November 1, 2021. The Citizen of the Year Award is presented annually to an individual who has made exceptional contributions to Lower Providence Township. The selection committee looks for an individual who, among other attributes, continually gives of his or her time, dedication and talents to the betterment of the local community. The Volunteer of the Year Award is presented annually to an individual, group or organization who has performed
outstanding service to the community. The award recognizes the inspiring efforts of volunteers and the selection committee looks for individuals who demonstrate commitment, service, creativity, and cooperation in their volunteer capacity. The Business of the Year Award recognizes a business that has promoted and inspired the business community through its leadership, example and investment in Lower Providence Township. If you have a friend, neighbor, relative or business that you feel meets any of the above criteria, complete a nomination form and return it to the Township by November 1, 2021. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT NEWS DevelopmentProjects: Underway & Under Review Arrowhead Elementary ON-GOINGCONSTRUCTION / Methacton School District is reconstructing NEARING COMPLETION the existing Arrowhead Elementary School Courts at Brynwood
building at 262 Level Road. The project involves continuous operation of the existing building while the new building is being constructed. The new building is adding a second story over part, enhanced traffic circulation, stormwater management, and modernized construction systems. Construction is underway, and the new school is on schedule to be opened in 2022.
Within this 139-townhome community along Germantown Pike, the units have completely sold out - ahead of schedule. Construction will be completed later this year.
Eagleville Hospital 100 Eagleville Road
A $45-million project to modernize the campus has begun. Construction of Phase 1 is nearly complete, with three new residential buildings recently completed.
Enclaves at Evansburg
Eagleville Elementary
DeLuca Homes of Bucks County is underway with this project, which is to include 24 small-lot single homes in a tract connecting Evansburg Road and Ridge Pike. Most of the homes have been completed, with a few left to be sold.
IROY Gym & Track 3444-50 Germantown Pike
Interior work has been completed for the approximately 47,000-square foot indoor gym and courts facility and the gym is open.
Methacton School District is adding an addition at the entryway to the existing school at 125 Summit Avenue. It will be a two-story addition; the area of the addition is 2,190 SF. Construction work on the addition at the main entrance, the HVAC system, and the façade is underway.
Moscariello at Crosskeys
This is a mixed-use project consisting of three buildings along Ridge Pike that will combine retail and office space with townhouse living above. There will also be 30 townhouses constructed interior to the site near Crosskeys Road. Site work has begun. Townhouse construction is to begin in the fall.
This is a proposal to build approximately 12,000 SF of new retail space on the site of the former Salter's Ski and Fireplace building. This project is completed through the land development process. The property owner is seeking tenants and will then begin construction.

This is for the construction of a new 21,950 SF building for the County Coroner and a new 22,200 SF Archives Building.

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT TOUR Committee Conducts Outreach Tours Plaza and Audubon Square Over the summer months, the Lower Providence Business Development Committee embarked on a series of outreach tours to local businesses. The committee visited the Park Ridge, Audubon Village, Audubon
shopping centers. An additional “Meet and Greet” event is also planned for businesses in the west Ridge Pike corridor. The outreach program allows the committee members to hear the concerns of business owners/operators and to discuss what the future may hold for businesses in the Township. Recognizing the

Lower Providence Township is in the process of updating its Comprehensive Plan that will lay the foundation for our community for the next 10+ years. The plan will describea long-range vision for the Township and provide direction for implementation of that vision. A committee made up of Township officials and community membersis working with professional planners from the Montgomery County Planning Commission on the update.

Project Return Safely A Valuable Tool for Police Department
The Lower Providence Township Police Department is proud to expand upon an already successful initiative. “Project Return Safely” is a program for families of individuals who may not be able to communicate with a law enforcement officer because of various physical and/or cognitive conditions. The program assists police officers in reuniting caregivers with lost or wandering loved ones suffering from Alzheimer's disease, Autism, or other incapacitating conditions. It is a valuable tool in identifying distressed individuals quickly and effectively.
Crisis is not simply the moment when things become intolerable. Crises build over time, and often can be recognized and managed in advance. Montgomery County Mobile Crisis provides not only immediate support for crisis situations, but also assistance with managing recurring or future crises. Support is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 1-855-634-HOPE (4673). This service is available to anyone in Montgomery County, including children, teens, adults, and families.

The police department recognizes time is of the essence and having background information will help our officers to make informed decisions on how to peacefully intervene to avoid those actions that will likely trigger fear, anxiety or even a violent response. We use the program to gather and maintain individual enrollment records. This information is placed in a secure database that can be accessed in a police cruiser or back at the station. If officers find someone who cannot communicate where he/she lives, they can search the database by description and safely return the person to their family or care givers. The system also works in reverse - if a loved one goes missing, their picture and description are immediately available.

This event will be held on Saturday, October 9, 2021, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. and will be held in lieu of our annual Friday evening open house.

Volunteerism in the fire service in the United States has been in decline for years and, unfortunately, the LPFD has not been immune from this trend. For us to keep fulfilling our mission of protecting the lives and property of the residents, businesses and visitors of Lower Providence and surrounding communities in our current structure, we need a strong, multigenerational volunteer base that is trained, confident, and ready to keep answering the call for years to come. While our greatest need is for firefighters, we welcome those interested in fire police, support, and administrative roles. If you have the ability and the desire to do the job, we can teach you the rest; the department covers the cost of training and equipment.
Our cadet and junior firefighter programs provide an opportunity for those as young as 14 years old to get involved and become proficient in fireground support functions, providing an advantage when entering the fire academy for formal certification after turning 18. The program is also a great opportunity to showcase an ongoing commitment to community service on college applications and resumés.
The Lower Providence Fire Department is a 100% volunteer organization comprised of dedicated community members who have answered the call for help since our establishment in 1945. We want to continue answering those calls in a timely, effective, and professional manner and are looking for like-minded community members to join our ranks.
The event falls during the annual National Fire Protection Agency Fire Prevention Week. There will be several different displays on hand for everyone in the family to enjoy including fire department displays, a helicopter, children's bounce house, DJ, smoke house, and other children's activities. Along with the displays and attractions, we intend to have several local small business vendors and agencies in attendance. At 3 p.m., a “Housing” ceremony will be held in which several newer pieces of fire apparatus will be officially housed into the fire department. This ceremony is rich in

However, they are rather common occurrences in not just Lower Providence but in the U.S. Did you know that LPEMS Paramedics and EMT's respond to over 3,800 calls for service in Lower Providence Township alone? That is an average of just over 10 emergencies every day! This may seem extreme; however, our dedicated staff has the training, compassion, and drive to handle every emergency respectfully and expeditiously. While we are trained for handling numerous situations, medical emergencies are an emotional experience for the individual requiring assistance and the family/friend(s) that are witnessing the event.

SEWER AUTHORITY NEWS Sewer Line Replacement Work
In our continued efforts to remove I/I* from the Sanitary Sewer System, our previous construction projects were in 2018 and 2020. Construction is currently underway and will continue through February 2022 to replace the main sanitary sewer lines and laterals serving the properties on the following streets in no particular order: Summit Avenue Amy Drive, Alexandra Drive, Jennifer Lane Second Street Sunnyside Avenue (Note: Sunnyside Avenue will be detoured during the construction work; residents will have access to their homes at all times.) Section of Walker Lane from East Mount Kirk to Church Road including Jamestown & Roanoke Circle, and section of Walker Lane from Church Road halfway to culde-sac. Questions about this upcoming project should be directed to the Sewer Authority at 610-539-6161 during the hours of 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM Monday through Friday. *Inflow and infiltration (I/I) is clear water that enters the sewer system from a variety of sources.
Inflow is water that that is entering the system through downspouts, floor drains and sump pumps. Infiltration occurs when groundwater seeps into sewer pipes through cracks, leaky pipe joints and/or deteriorated manholes which may cause sewage volumes to exceed design capacity.
Sewer Gas What You Should Know The Sewer Authority often gets calls from homeowners that they smell sewer gas in their home.
One common cause of sewer gas in the home is a dried P-trap in a sink that has not been used in a while. Water sits in the Ptrap and blocks sewer gas from entering up through the drain. If the P-trap runs dry, it allows the gas to escape through the drain. Sewer gas is a mixture of inorganic gases created by the action of anaerobic (needing no oxygen) bacteria in sewage and sludge. This gas can contain hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Sewer gas can be produced in our sewer systems, during the sewage treatment process, and can also occur in homes where there are plumbing issues. The primary part of sewer gas, and the smelliest part, is hydrogen sulfide. This is what gives the gas the “rotten egg” smell
that is also used to detect gas leaks. This smell is actually added to natural gas by utility companies to warn customers of a potential leak. However, if you smell this around your drains, it is likely from sewer gas trapped somewhere in your plumbing system. If your plumbing system is working properly, you should not smell any sewer gas in your home. If you do have odors, the best thing to do is find the problem and have it repaired. Run water down your drains, even in sinks you may not use often, as part of routine maintenance.

Fall yard care practices can make a big impact on water quality. The dead leaves that blanket your yard are full of things like phosphorus and nitrogen that feed algae, cause fish kills and contaminate our waters with toxins and bacteria. Keeping leaves and other yard waste away from stormdrains will go a long way toward protecting our rivers, lakes and streams. Grass clippings and leaves blown into the street during yard maintenance don't just disappear; they can end up clogging local 18

storm sewer systems. Allowing yard waste into the street or down the storm drain can cause blockages or serious damage to the storm drain infrastructure. You can help to prevent this by never raking or blowing leaves into the street and by blowing grass trimmings back into your yard. Leaves are a potent source of nutrients. If you mulch them into smaller bits with your lawnmower, it has roughly the same effect as adding a round of store-bought fertilizer.

LOWER PROVIDENCE COMMUNITY GARDEN Lower Providence Community Garden was created to give Lower Providence Township residents the opportunity to build community through sustainable gardening. The garden is an unincorporated nonprofit organization initiated collectively by community members who participate in its organization, design, construction, and ongoing care. Through a memorandum of understanding with the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, there are currently 15 raised beds available to members at 1350 Pawlings Road,across the street from the former St. Gabriel's Hall. Individuals, families, or community organizations are invited to participate. There will be a seed swap and plant exchange program, gardening book library, educational events, and gathering space to sit and chat with other garden members. Also planned are several environmentally beneficial garden initiatives above and beyond the traditional community garden concept, including a wildflower meadow, blueberry "pick your own" field, native pollinator garden, and a monarch waystation. The site is also home to Martha's Community Farm which grows vegetables, flowers and herbs to supply to families accessing Martha's Choice Marketplace, located in Norristown serving all of Montgomery County, and other local pantries. Township residents are encouraged to get involved in the township Community Garden by becoming a member, volunteer, board member, or partner. From seasoned gardeners to budding beginners, everyone has something to contribute and all insight, input, and ideas are welcome. My Dog Stopped Eating!
Here are some common reasons. What are some common reasons for a dog to stop eating? When a dog stops eating it is referred to as anorexia. Dogs can become anorexic for many reasons. Sometimes it is an indication of a gastrointestinal issue. This could range from a simple cause like gastroenteritis to a more serious issue like gastrointestinal neoplasia or cancer. Gastroenteritis often occurs when dogs eat something out of the ordinary, from a new food or treat to getting into the garbage or ingesting something outside. Loss of appetite can also be a sign of other systemic illnesses such as kidney or liver disease, pancreatitis, and numerous other medical issues. What illnesses are associated with a dog not eating? There are countless medical causes for a dog to stop eating. Some are simple and can resolve spontaneously or get better with some simple medical intervention while others are more serious and require more extensive testing and treatment. The most common reason that we see dogs stop eating is gastroenteritis. This is inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract that occurs in dogs most commonly when they eat something out of the ordinary. More serious causes tend to result in a more gradual or persistent loss of appetite. These might include renal disease, liver disease, pancreatitis, cancer, and many other systemic illnesses.
Can a change in surroundings affect a dog's appetite? A change in surrounding can affect a dog's appetite temporarily. If you have a dog who is easily stressed or normally has a picky appetite, then moving to a new home, boarding, or being cared for in another home could cause a dog to eat less or refuse food for a few days. But an otherwise healthy dog will eat when she is hungry or accept tempting food like chicken, ground beef, or treats. 24

How can dental issues affect a dog's appetite? Dental issues should not affect your dog's appetite. Dogs are good at eating in a way to avoid oral pain. Dental issues can affect your dog's comfort when eating (he may drool excessively or have trouble picking up or chewing food), but he will still feel hungry and should show interest in food when it is offered.
How long can a dog go without eating? A dog can go for several days without eating and it does not cause bodily harm. Cats are very different and should not go more than 2 or 3 days without eating. Of course, both dogs and cats cannot go without drinking for more than a day or two without suffering dehydration.

When is it necessary to see a specialist about your dog not eating? If your dog stops eating, you can wait a day or two to see if his appetite returns. If your dog is experiencing other symptoms, like vomiting, diarrhea, or lethargy he should be evaluated by a veterinarian within 24 hours. If your dog has a persistent loss of appetite and has seen either your primary veterinarian or an emergency veterinarian, has had initial testing done (bloodwork, x-rays, ultrasound), and has not responded to initial medical therapy, then he should be seen by a specialist. The type of specialist depends on the results of initial testing and could range from an Internal Medicine Specialist to a Dermatologist, or a Surgeon.

Lower Providence Township offers cool savings on discount ski tickets! These ski lift tickets may be purchased at the Township Building, Monday - Friday, between the hours of 8:00 am and 4:30 pm. Cash and credit cards are accepted to purchase tickets. No personal checks, refunds or exchanges. Tickets will be available mid-December 2021 through March 2022. Call ahead to confirm availability.

We had another AWESOME Summer Camp Season! The Township's Parks and Recreation Department wrapped up another successful summer camp season - the summer camp program has been serving Township families for over 25 years. Camp Perkiomy, this year was held at Arrowhead and Woodland Elementary Schools, accommodatedth campers in kindergarten through 5 grade. The Perkiomy Trailblazers camp, which is designed for middle school youths in grades 5 through 8, was held at Arcola Intermediate School.
Due to the pandemic, summer camp this year went back to the good old days and held camp “old school” style. Throughout the summer, campers enjoyed theme days, special guest speakers and a wide variety of special events - everything from Christmas in July to Wacky Science Experiments to Camp Olympics Day! If you'd like more information on the summer camps program or summer camp staff job opportunities, contact the Parks and Recreation Department, 610-635-3543. The 2022 Summer Camp Information Guide, activity calendars and job applications will be available after the first of the year.
