Recycling: Special Dates & Options for Electronics Special Holiday Recycling Collection

Due to the Christmas and New Year's holidays falling on Friday, there will be a special recycling pickup for those residents whose recycling day is Friday.

Community Development: A Team Approach T h e To w n s h i p ' s C o m m u n i t y Development Department has a mission and a message. The mission: To review zoning and building plans, issue permits, inspect construction activity and enforce related Township codes. The message: The department is more than regulations and rules and is ready offer help with projects of any size. "From backyard sheds to large commercial buildings, our team will coordinate the vision and guide you through the process," explained Mike Mrozinski, the department's director and zoning officer. "While we can't design their project, we encourage residents and businesses to come to us with their ideas. " The majority of small and all large construction and home improvement projects require a Township-issued permit, basically a license to begin a project or install equipment regulated by building or fire codes. Lower Providence Township's regulations are guided by state standards that are in place to protect residents/businesses and their neighbors. Permit applications forms and an explanation of which projects require permits can be found on the department's website,_www.lowerprovidence.org/ _ codeenforcement.htm.

"The permit application is not a test," stressed Mrozinski. "We want the process to be easy." He doesn't want missing information to stop the process and said that residents should fill out what they know and let the department help with the rest. That help can come from any one of the department's members. In addition to Mrozinski, the department includes Building Code Official Aaron Bingham who handles plan reviews and inspections, Code Enforcement Officer Mike Rohlfing, who is responsible for residential re-sale inspections, business license inspections and code enforcement, and Permit Coordinator Joan Holley who s c h e d u l e s inspections and marshals the permitting process from start to finish. Mrozinski said he has made it a priority to have a c o h e s i v e department available to the community. The experienced staff

National Preparedness Month Plan Today to Keep Your Family Connected in an Emergency Your family goes their separate ways each day. How will you communicate and reunite should a disaster strike? The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is stressing this need throughout September, National Preparedness Month.

"Knowing what to do is your best protection in an emergency," advises Township Emergency Manager Charles DeFrangesco. Below are some tips from FEMA to get your family plan started. First, to guarantee that you'll know exactly what's happening around you:

Start planning now to help your family keep in touch no matter what the situation: · Complete contact cards, including daytime addresses and phone numbers, for each family member. Have them keep these cards handy in a wallet, purse, or backpack.

· Identify an out-of-state contact, such as a friend or relative, whom household members can contact to notify they are safe. In certain instances, it may be easier to make a long-distance phone call than a call across town and an outof-town contact may be in a better position to facilitate communication among separated family members. · Program a contact in your cell phone as your "in case of emergency" (ICE) contact. If you are in an accident, emergency personnel will often check your ICE listings to reach someone you know. This information is a good starting point for your family's planning, but it's just the tip of the iceberg. Fire Prevention Week - Oct. 4-10, 2015

Lower Providence Volunteer Fire Company is once again partnering with the nonprofit National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to observe Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 410, 2015. Each year during Fire Prevention week, volunteers from Lower Providence Fire Company visit day cares and schools to spread the work about fire prevention. The week ends with a fun- filled open house, scheduled this year for Friday, Oct. 9 from 7 to 9 pm. at the main station, 3199 Ridge Pike, Eagleville. There will be demonstrations, displays, and education for all ages. It is a great way to see the volunteer firefighters and

than 2,000 acres. The fire began on October 8, but did most of its damage on October 9. Today the week is used to raise awareness about home fire safety. The key message of this year's Fire Prevention Week campaign is to install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement. Larger homes may need more alarms. A Call for Volunteers The Fire Department is an allvolunteer organization that has been serving the Lower Providence community since 1945. If you are 14 or older and interested becoming a firefighter, fire police officer, or junior firefighter, the Fire Department would like to meet with you and discuss the opportunities available. Individuals with or without prior fire service experience are needed and all necessary training will be provided. The best way to begin the application process is to stop by the Eagleville station at 3199 Ridge Pike around 7 pm on any Tuesday night. You can also call 610-539-5408 and leave a message.

Phone Scam Warning - Don't Be a Victim Over the past year, we've seen an increase in phone scams targeting Lower Providence Township residents. Two of the most common ones are the IRS scam and the grandparent scam. Please take time to read about these scams and ways to prevent becoming their next victim. IRS-Impersonation Telephone Scam An aggressive and sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers has been making the rounds throughout the country. Callers claim to be employees of the IRS, but are not. These con artists can sound convincing when they call. They use fake names and bogus IRS identification badge numbers. They may know a lot about their targets, and they usually alter the caller ID to make it look like the IRS is calling. Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver's license. Or, victims may be told they have a refund due to try to trick them into sharing private information. If the phone isn't answered, the scammers often leave an "urgent" callback request. Remember, the IRS will never: 1) Call to demand immediate payment, nor will the agency call

about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill; 2) Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe; 3) Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card; 4) Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone; or 5) Threaten.

Grandparent Scam In this scam, a grandparent receives a phone call (or sometimes an e-mail) from a "grandchild." If it is a phone call, it's often late at night or early in the morning when most people aren't thinking that clearly. Usually, the person claims to be traveling in a

foreign country and has gotten into a bad situation, like being arrested for drugs, getting in a car accident, or being mugged and needs money wired ASAP. And the caller doesn't want his or her parents told. Sometimes, instead of the "grandchild" making the phone call, the criminal pretends to be an arresting police officer, a lawyer, a doctor at a hospital, or some other person. And we've also received complaints about the phony grandchild talking first and then handing the phone over to an accomplice who further spins the fake tale. We've also seen military families victimized: After perusing a soldier's social networking site, a con artist will contact the soldier's grandparents, sometimes claiming that a problem came up during military leave that requires money to address. While it's commonly called the grandparent scam, criminals may also claim to be a family friend, a niece or nephew, or another family member. To avoid being victimized: -Resist the pressure to act quickly -Try to contact a family member to determine if the call is legitimate -Never wire money based on a request made over the phone or in an e-mail (continues next page)

Police Trained to Administer Overdose Drug

Here are some tips to remember: 1. Don't answer phone calls from unfamiliar phone numbers. Let those calls go to your voice mail and decide after listening whether you want to call back. 2. Never provide anyone with personal information such as bank accounts, social security numbers, or personal identification numbers (PIN). 3. If you get a call saying you're a winner, don't pay any money to collect a prize. A legitimate sweepstakes will never ask you to pay to collect your winnings. 4. Never wire money to anyone with whom you are not familiar. 5. Remember that old saying, "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is." 6. When in doubt, call the police and ask them.

An opioid overdose results in decreased breathing, heart rate, loss of consciousness and if untreated, death may occur. Naloxone is designed to rapidly reverse the effects of an opioid overdose allowing for life-saving measures to be administered.

The police department began to carry the Evzio (naloxone hydrochloride injection) auto injectors as of April 2015. Two doses of the drug are attached to each of the department's AED units. The AED/ Narcan® units are carried by uniformed patrol personnel during their daily shifts. Community Involvement LOOKING GOOD - The Eagleville Park basketball court got a fresh coat of paint and a new look over the summer. The annual Caring & Sharing holiday program assists less fortunate families in the Township during the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons. The Township provides holiday meals and gifts and you can be a part of the program by: Donating canned goods Making a monetary donation Purchasing an Angel Tree gift Canned goods and monetary donations can be dropped off at the Township Administration Building (during business hours, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.). Road Improvement Project The second phase of the Township's three-year road improvement project got underway in August. Roads being repaired in 2015 are Eaglestream Drive, Collegeville Road, Woodland Avenue, South Regency Drive and a portion of Sunnyside Avenue. Recon Construction was awarded the cold-in-place recycling portion of the project in the amount of $121,070.75. This is specialty work in which the road is milled to

approximately six inches in depth and then the milled material is mixed with new asphalt and other materials to create a new six-inch subbase. After a curing period, a new surface is applied. Recon Construction also was awarded the contract for deep base repair in the amount of $63,975. Allan A. Myers received the contract for the asphalt overlay portion at a cost of $402,630. The contracts were awarded at the June 18, 2015 Board of Supervisors meeting.

Arcola Road Bridge Update

In July, the contractor completed the reinforcing steel installation and the placement of concrete for the footings at bridge abutment #1 and wing wall on the Cider Mill Road side of the project. The contractor also completed the installation of formwork and reinforcing steel and the placement of concrete for the stem walls. Also during July, the

contractor applied a portion of the architectural surface treatment at Pier #2 and completed the installation of the temporary stream diversion system to begin t h e e x c a v at i o n a n d demolition of the existing Abutment # 2 on the Level Road side of the project. The bridge is on schedule to reopen in late spring of 2016.

Tackling Fall Chores With an Eye on Stream Pollution There are many sources at this time of year that can pollute stormwater - the rainwater that makes its way into storm drains or runs off properties into streams. Leaf litter and yard waste dumped into a stormwater basin or near a waterway can cause harmful nutrient accumulation. Leaves swept into the street can enter storm drains and make their way into the nearest creek as well. Excess lawn fertilizer can wash away with the rain and bare soil can also run off into streams and cause sediment pollution. As you tackle fall cleanup chores, put these tips into practice:

Don't fertilize immediately before a rainstorm and don't apply fertilizers in excess. Always follow the directions on the bottle for safe application and disposal whenever you use a chemical product.

Sidewalks, Streets and Snow Tenants and owners of properties abutting public streets are reminded that they are required to clear snow and otherwise maintain their sidewalks. Township ordinance requires that a pathway at least 30 inches wide be cleared within 48 hours after it stops snowing. Tenants/owners also are required to cover the sidewalk with ashes, sawdust or similar materials in the event of ice or sleet. Keep in mind that the first priority during a snowstorm is keeping main roads open and passable. Under normal circumstances, cul-de-sacs and dead end streets are typically

plowed last because they carry the lowest volume of traffic. State highways and county roads are cleared by state and county snow removal crews. Please remember, too, that it is almost impossible to keep snow from being deposited at driveways during plowing. Please do not shovel or blow snow from driveways into the street. If you have a fire hydrant on your property, please clear the snow away

from the area around it (leaving the markers intact). The cooperation of residents and businesses is appreciated by the Township to help us keep our streets and sidewalks safe during inclement weather.

Memorial trees, benches and Walk of Honor brick pavers are welcomed donations at sites within the Lower Providence Township Parks system and are special ways to honor the memory of a loved one.

If you or your family enjoy a particular park and wish to place a lasting memorial to a family member, friend or pet consider donating a tree or bench. Memorial brick pavers are added to the Walk of Honor in front of the Township's Veterans' Memorial located at the Administration Building. Memorial gift forms are available at the Administration Building or on-line at the Township website www.lowerprovidence.org under Forms & Documents. The Township must approve any wording that will appear on any plaques and/or bricks. Once the form is received by the Parks and Recreation Department, we will contact you to confirm your donation. Parks & Recreation News Our Campers from Lil' Perks to Trailblazers had a Great Summer! The Township's Parks and Recreation Department wrapped up another successful summer camp season - the summer camp program has been serving Township families for over 20 years.

Throughout the summer, campers enjoyed theme days, field trips and guest speakers and a wide variety of special events everything from Camp Olympics to Superhero's Day to Pajama Day!

Lil' Perkiomy Camp provided preschoolers, ages 4 and 5, the chance to get a taste of the camp experience. The campers met for half-day sessions at the Eagleville Park pavilion. Three two-week sessions were offered. Camp Perkiomy, held at Eagleville, Audubon and Arrowhead Elementary Schools, accommodated campers in kindergarten through 5th grade. The Perkiomy Trailblazers camp is designed for middle school youths in grades 5 through 8. It was held at two sites, Arrowhead Elementary School and the Shoemaker House on the grounds of the Township complex.
