Snow Removal & Plowing Snow Management Plan

Upper Merion Township recognizes the importance of snow removal, not only to residents, but to everyone who needs to travel to or through our community. The township utilizes a snow management plan to safely clear all public roads within the township quickly and efficiently. Based on traffic flow, roads are divided into primary (main), secondary (collector and through), and tertiary (dead-end and cul-de-sac) roads.ĂŠDuring snow storms, the Public Works Department plows 376 streets, consisting of 83 miles of township roads, and 37 miles of state roads.

Plowing

Plowing will begin when it is determined that at least two inches of snow can be measured on the road. During a declared snow emergency, parking is prohibited on all roads designated as Snow Emergency Routes. The first priority is to clear all primary roads, including bus routes. This work generally takes six to eight hours after snow stops falling. Crews begin plowing secondary roads after clearing and opening all primary roads. These collector and through roads are usually cleared within 12-16 hours after snow stops falling. Crews then move on to side roads, dead-ends, and culde-sacs. Please be patient with snow removal.

Shoveling Guidelines

A 2-foot wide path of sidewalk must be cleared by the abutting property owner within 24 hours after the end of the snow emergency. (See Ordinance Code: Chapter 137.2 and Chapter 137.5) If more than 12 inches of snow falls, the time limit is extended to 48 hours. Do not clear sidewalks until plowing equipment has passed, or your hard work may be for nothing. Remember to shovel to the right of your driveway facing the road, as plows clear from the left. This helps to reduce the amount of snow pushed back into your driveway during plowing. Throwing, shoveling or plowing snow from sidewalks or driveways into the street is strictly prohibited by the Township's Ordinance Code: Chapter 137.1.

Adopt a Hydrant Save a Life

The Fire & Rescue Services Division reminds all residents to clear snow from around fire hydrants. Doing so can save precious time when firefighters need additional water fight a fire. Citizens should clear a 3-foot wide path from the street to the fire hydrant, and a 3-foot circle around the fire hydrant to provide easy access by firefighters.

Snow Emergencies

When a snow emergency has been declared, the township activates its Snow Operations Center at the Public Works yard. The center is staffed by employees who are in contact with all snow removal crews. The township now provides snow removal progress information in the form of an interactive map. The updates of the plowing progress will only begin after the snow stops falling and the crews are in final clean-up mode. The status will be updated every 15 minutes and will continue until the cleanup is completed.

Ergonomics At Your Home This Holiday Season, Give Yourself the Gift of… PAIN-FREE HANDS AND ARMS By: Adam Strohl MD FACS, Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon, Subspecialty in Hand Surgery Lauren DeTullio MS, OTR/L, CHT, Certified Hand Therapist, Clinical Education Director

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the overwhelming shift to work-from-home and virtual school, Philadelphia Hand to Shoulder Center has seen a sharp rise in patients complaining of numbness and tingling in their hands as well as painful wrists, forearms, and elbows. It is not surprising to find out that most of these patients are not working at an appropriate desk setting, and many are not using a desk at all, as couches, floors, kitchen tables and beds have become makeshift desks, leading to poor posture and extra strain on necks, shoulders, arms and hands. In this new “virtual world” we are learning the value of ergonomics, which is defined as “the study of people in their work environment”. Its principles ensure that the demands of the job match the worker's physical capabilities. Good ergonomics can improve performance and increase productivity. Poor ergonomics can contribute to muscle imbalances that can result in strain and fatigue on the body. Poor posture, in particular, can affect your spine alignment and cause muscle pain in the neck, back and shoulders. Sometimes we can confuse symptoms

as a result of poor ergonomics with other conditions such as eye strain, muscular pain and tingling in the upper extremity. The improper positioning of the hands, arms, and neck while working for extended periods of time can place damaging strain on your tendons, nerves, and joints. This repetitive stress can cause inflammation that leads to soreness, swelling, sensory changes, limited mobility and even weakness. Overuse tendinitis such as DeQuervains at the wrist and lateral epicondylitis (or “Tennis Elbow”) at the elbow are common. Increased pressure on the nerves at the wrist and elbow can lead to episodic or progressively continuous numbness and/or tingling in the fingers such as carpal and cubital tunnel syndromes.

Clinical Director of Therapy Lauren DeTullio,MS,OTR/CHT helps patients set up their at-home work and school stations to promote healthy posture that can reduce neck, shoulder, arm, wrist and hand pain while improving performance and increasing productivity.

Most often, our at-home work and virtual school stations don't offer a set up that has been properly designed and outfitted. Many people have gotten “comfortable” working from their couches, floor, kitchen table and their beds, however this temporary comfort can be damaging to optimum human performance and musculoskeletal health. Philadelphia Hand to Shoulder Center can assess, diagnose and treat the aches, pains, and numbness in your hands, wrist, elbows and shoulders. We also offer a comprehensive ergonomic assessment and treatment program for each patient. We create a customized program, starting with an evaluation of each patient's personal workstation. This evaluation can be done either in our office or during a telemedicine appointment.

By placing your wrist in a neutral position while typing, you can avoid nerve compression that can cause carpal tunnel syndrome and decrease stress on your wrist extensors that can cause tennis elbow. 8

King of Prussia News

Our physicians and therapists will offer tips for removing common barriers to good ergonomics such as: poor lighting, the lack of support for one's feet while working and sitting for too long. Simple solutions like adding a desk lamp to your

desk, using a collapsible step stool to support your feet and taking regular breaks to move around and stretch can make a difference. We are all in this together, and the hand surgeons and therapists at Philadelphia Hand to Shoulder Center can help alleviate any discomfort in your hands, wrist, arms, elbows and shoulders during this unusual and stressful time. Our experts offer nonsurgical care, leading-edge surgical procedures and upper extremity therapy in 16 offices in Pennsylvania and New Jersey including Havertown, Glen Mills, Paoli and King of Prussia. Our offices follow all CDC COVID-19 safety recommendations to protect our patients and our staff. Telemedicine appointments, from the comfort of your home, are also available. Give us a call at (800)385-PHSC (7472) to schedule an appointment with us or visit us at www. hand2shouldercenter.com for more information.

All of us at Philadelphia Hand to Shoulder Center wish you and your family a safe, pain-free holiday season!

Health & Wellness Skin Tips To Make Your Eyes Stand Out

Preparing for work or a night out with friends or a partner might have previously meant putting on some makeup, spending a little extra time on your hair and generally a lot of time primping in front of the bathroom mirror. But in the midst of a pandemic, this getting ready routine has gotten a lot easier; for most of us, it means picking out a face mask and heading out the door.

well as injectables and fillers. And while procedures like these may be trendy right now, they're nothing new. “We see patients of all ages and they're coming to us for various reasons,” says Dr. Weng. “For some people, these can help correct facial injuries or traumas but for others, these surgeries are primarily cosmetic. Whatever the reason, these offer our patients the benefit of confidence and improved self-esteem.”

Let Makeup Soak Off

Instead of using wipes to remove your eye makeup - which often require you to pull or tug at your lashes or the skin surrounding your eye - stry letting it soak off. Use a cotton round soaked in makeup remover and press it gently to your eye for 20-30 seconds. If stubborn eye makeup sticks around, use cotton swabs to target these areas.

Sleep Well, Eat Well And Exercise

An overall healthy lifestyle is good for your skin. Make time for sleep and regular exercise, and limit your intake of salty foods and alcohol, two groups that can cause dehydration and puffiness.

Quit Smoking

The toxins in cigarette smoke can speed up skin aging and make it more prone to wrinkles. If you're a smoker, quit. If you're not, avoid secondhand smoke. Main Line Health serves patients at hospitals and health centers throughout the western suburbs of Philadelphia. For more information, visit mainlinehealth.org. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Weng, call 610.527.1436.

But with a mask that covers the majority of your face, you might be starting to focus on some of the little things that you've been ignoring or overlooking - namely, your eyes. Several cosmetic surgeons & dermatologists are reporting increased patient interest in cosmetic procedures like Botox and eyelid lifts. During COVID-19, your eyes have truly become a window to the world - and you want to make sure they look good! According to Catherine Weng, MD, a Main Line Health doctor who is board-certified in both facial plastic and reconstructive surgery and otolaryngology, there are many options for anyone who is interested in making their eyes stand out from above a mask. “There are many surgical and non-surgical options for people who are looking to improve their appearance,” says Dr. Weng, who sees patients at Main Line Health King of Prussia as well as Bryn Mawr Hospital and Main Line Health Newtown Square. “Depending on your health, your skin type and what you're looking for there are many options available that can reduce fine lines and wrinkles and improve the appearance of your eyes and the surrounding area.” At her office in King of Prussia, Dr. Weng offers browlifts, facelifts, eyelid surgeries as 10

King of Prussia News

You may not be ready to commit to surgery just yet, but there are some steps you can take to make your eyes pop while the majority of your face is masked. Dr. Weng offers her advice for maintaining healthy, vibrant skin around the eyes:

Sun Protection

You know how important sun protection is for keeping your skin healthy, yet many people still do not use a broad spectrum sunscreen on a daily basis. Even during winter, your eyes are exposed to the sun. Make sure they're protected by wearing sunscreen on your face or a moisturizer that contains SPF.

Be Gentle

The skin around your eyes is six to 10 times thinner than the skin in other areas of your face. Avoid scratching, rubbing or pulling on the area to prevent wrinkles. Instead, if you're applying a product, use your pinky finger to gently dab and rub it into the area.

Gardening & Landscaping Preparing for Spring during Winter's Slumber

Tom Smarr, Executive Director at Jenkins Arboretum & Gardens

Stillness in the garden during the winter months always gives me the false feeling there is little work to be done. However, I always find myself behind on important preparations for the upcoming hectic growing spring season. There is so much to observe, study, and plan during the winter, as well as a multitude of tasks to complete. At Jenkins Arboretum & Gardens, there is great visual drama through the winter into very early spring. We often like to leave some of the sturdier perennial stems of favorites such as coneflowers (Echinacea species), ironweed (Vernonia species), and ornamental grasses. These perennial plants provide layered volume in the garden, as well as interesting silhouettes with various hues of brown. The stems provide great hibernating habitat for pollinating insects, as well as cover for over-wintering birds that dash around in search for food. The seed heads are a source of food and are stunning when dusted with frost or snow. Our deciduous trees and shrubs are also amazing to view after a fresh snow with their stems outlined in bright white, especially with a backdrop of evergreens. This is the season when the garden is “bare bones”, meaning that the many herbaceous perennials are dormant, and the leaves are off the deciduous trees and shrubs revealing the underlying structure of the garden. During this time, I go out in the garden to evaluate the relationships of shapes of the larger forms in the space. My goal is to understand the layering relationship of trees, shrubs, and larger perennial forms. However,

Dried Aster Flowers

16

King of Prussia News

it is important to maintain some open spaces. These spaces allow for a fun interplay of the lower growing perennials and groundcovers. Jenkins is home to a diversity of evergreen shrubs, including a large collection of rhododendrons, azaleas, and mountain laurels. Also, we have a wide array of native deciduous shrubs that provide a variety of shapes in the winter landscape. It is fun to walk through the garden and test my identification skills by studying the swollen buds that will become new leaves and flowers in the soon-to-come spring. Jenkins is a great place to explore plants in maturity that you may be considering for use in your own gardens. You can find an abundance of ideas to meet the design goals you have for your home landscape. At home, I go outside to study the spaces created in my garden. One of my mentors always encouraged, “You need time to sit on a stump to observe and think about design in a space.” Sometimes, I will look at a garden bed then close my eyes to try to imagine the garden in full spring splendor. Another method I use for designing outdoor spaces is to print photographs of the garden and

sketch shapes of potential additions to plan better screening or to fill-out sparse areas. I flip through trusted garden reference books and check nursery availability for new plants I may want to add in spring. At Jenkins, we post our garden shop availability in April. As the days get brighter and warmer in March, I begin to cutdown the spent perennial and grass stems left from the previous season. I am careful walking in the garden beds as the early spring ephemeral wildflower stems are already starting to emerge just below the leaf litter. At Jenkins, the Woodland Walk and Azalea Hill trails have an abundance of these very early spring treasures that start to become impatient about emerging in early to mid-April. Come enjoy a walk this winter at Jenkins to enjoy the fresh air, sightings of overwintering birds, and glean some ideas for your own garden. Please check our website for visitor guidelines and opening and closing hours. (www.jenkinsarboretum.org/) Tom Smarr is the Executive Director at Jenkins Arboretum & Gardens with over 20 years of garden management experience.

Etiquette on the Green

Tips from the Golf Tour of Greater Philadelphia

The game of Golf boomed in 2020! Thousands of players were lured to this noncontact, healthy outdoor sport during the pandemic. According to the National Golf Foundation and Golf Datatech, roughly 10 million more rounds were played in August of 2020 than in August of 2019. And several million of those rounds were played by children. As many players know, golf has been around for centuries, and has a lot of written and unwritten rules. With the huge influx of golfers this year, it's easy to understand why more mistakes happened on the links. Of course, most people know the basics: be at least 20 minutes early for your tee time, keep up with the pace of play (no dawdling courses are crowded), and always silence your phone. But there are other, more nuanced rules of etiquette - and the Golf Tour of Greater Philadelphia (www.golftourphilly.org) is here to help. Observing these tips should keep everyone happy once you make it to the green. (That's the relatively circular, perfectly trimmed grassy area where you putt the ball in the hole.)

Mark Your Ball

Keep a coin in your pocket, and if your ball is NOT furthest from the hole, carefully replace your ball with the coin. Then when it's your turn, swap the coin with your ball, and sink that putt!

Fix Your Divots

Use a little divot tool or a golf tee to repair any damage that your ball may have caused when it landed on the green.

Never Cross Another Player's Line Of Sight

This can be tricky because you are relatively close to your crew on the green. But be careful to allow the person putting to have a clear view of the hole. Not only should you stay behind the golfer who is putting, your shadow should never touch the player's line of sight either! Literally, never “throw shade.” Ha! As we all know, to err is human, and to forgive, divine. Even seasoned Golf Tour members sometimes commit protocol faux pas. And sometimes, they play perfect golf. For example, in 2019 three of our players had holes-in-one during competitive play (one at Hickory Valley Golf Club, one at Downingtown Country Club, and one at Seaview Golf Club). One of our goals for 2021 is to break that record. Another goal is to continue growing our membership, and we were delighted to welcome new players at our recent open house events. There will be at least one more open house in early Spring 2021 just before our 2021 season starts in earnest. If you are considering joining a league in 2021, but don't know your handicap, GTGP has you covered! All members get their scores posted for them on the US Golf Association (USGA) Tournament Management system, and after your third game, it automatically generates your handicap. We not only track your scores online for you, we have a “Park and Play” registration and payment system which has been very helpful during the pandemic. Members can skip the pro shop and head straight to the practice area and the first tee. Park your car and go play! Golf Tour Philly guarantees your reserved tee times, most during prime Saturday morning slots, and offers various levels of competition: Weekly 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners (“low nets” get credits towards future rounds)

Art & Creativity - Inspiring Artists in the Face of COVID so we give up. In reality, it just takes practice. It's all about training yourself to see like an artist, and having fun along the way.” Everything Watercolor, including the kitchen sink! Designed for beginners and intermediate artists alike, the focus of this online class will be playing with watercolor and having fun.

Gabrielle Sivitz demonstrating during a watercolor class session.

The Greater Norristown Art League, located in the heart of Montgomery county, was founded in 1941 and offers art instruction for both adults and children in our one-room converted schoolhouse. Our hands-on classes have been held in our cozy, warm and inviting schoolhouse for over 75 years. Although we have a small footprint, we know that we have a big impact on our community. Yet, like many art organizations, GNAL had to temporarily close its doors back in March of 2020. Like the little engine that could, we regrouped and took this opportunity to offer our members both engaging and affordable programming while keeping safety a top priority. We built a whole new platform around creativity, embracing artists' needs of all ages. We are fortunate to have engaging instructors who love teaching virtually - all while keeping our small, intimate environment front and center.

Pen & Ink In this introductory class, you learn the techniques to bring your drawings to another level. Some drawing experience recommended, but not required. In addition to our restructured online classes, we have put together smaller in person classes such as Oil Painting with Jim Green. After graduating from Temple University's Tyler School, of Art Jim owned and operated a construction business for 30 years. He has now turned his full attention to a career in the fine arts. “For me oil painting provides a few hours of a healthy and satisfying escape from the daily nonsense our crazy society dishes out.”

We round out with Betz Green and her Mixed Media class. After attending youth classes at Kutztown University, she received a scholarship to attend Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Arts and then attended Tyler School of Art. “Art for me becomes all-encompassing once I enter the studio, close the door, pop in an audio book, sit down at my desk, and begin to create.”

Betz Green, our Mixed Media Drawing instructor. "Newlin Mill" oil pastel on board 18" x 24" “The ways in which the autumn colors are reflected in the diverse forms of the buildings, trees, and boulders motivated me to paint this landscape.”

Mixed Media Drawing This class is about creating art with drawing mediums you tried in the past and ones you want to learn more about. It is about using these materials in traditional and experimental ways. In addition to our new classes, we have implemented an online Corporate Art Program in partnership with local companies who are willing to offer their employees creative and therapeutic art instruction. It focuses on drawing and sketching with no experience required! Let us know if you may be interested in implementing this at your business. You can contact us at gnartleague@gmail.com. It's the perfect time to embrace your creative side. Please go to www.GNAL.org right now and become a member. After all, the benefits of producing art, at any skill level, have been well-documented. Art lowers stress, lets you focus deeply and helps you imagine a more hopeful future. Just what we need right now.

As a result, we are so happy to share that we are offering a variety of new, innovative programming that will fit just about anyone's creative needs. Please go to www.GNAL.org to get more details on our classes. We would like to introduce you to a few of our instructors and offer a preview of what is to come. First up, Gabrielle Sivitz. Gabrielle studied at Bucks County Community College, Moore College of Art & Design, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts where she focused on painting and print making. Her classes are geared toward having fun and accepting mistakes. “We accept the myth that artists are born with some magical ability that we don't have, and

So, if you are driving down Germantown Pike, please don't let the closed doors of our little schoolhouse fool you into thinking we are not open. We are very much open!! In fact, we have opened-up a whole world of possibilities and options for our community and beyond. At GNAL we believe art is therapeutic to mind, body, and spirit, beneficial to all regardless of artistic abilities. We are so blessed to have your continued support though this transition and want to thank you for your donations and support. We wish everyone a happy, healthy and safe New Year!

Sadness

There does not have to be a reason for being sad. They just are and that is OK.

You have to be wondering if you are alone. Is something wrong? There must be. This new strange behavior coupled with intense unpredictability causes a parental terror that can be debilitating. Silence is safe. Don't tell anyone what is going on. This is a family problem of such proportions that to reveal the essence of the issue would be socially damning, spawning an onslaught of judgement from friends and family. Something has happened to your child that you are unable to explain. The profound feelings of isolation, loss, despair and confusion can only be found in one special place.

Let the emotions run their course. When they are crying, or yelling, let them get it out of their system. Avoid saying things like “stop crying.” Go to the shed and change the oil in your lawnmower in-stead.

an excerpt from Andrew Mullen’s book, Middle Schooled.

You bought a ticket to this place 10-12 years ago. Don't you remember? It was beautiful, noisy and wrapped in a blue and white striped blanket. You were tired but happy at the time of “purchase.” Still don't remember? My dear guests! I am Mr. Mullen, your host. Welcome to Adolescent Island! Smiles everyone, smiles! Yes, my friends, you are currently and thankfully only temporarily, on a vacation to what is known as Adolescent Island. This is a magical place adorned with an all you can eat buffet for every meal. Some more noteworthy items on the menu are mood swings, anger, crying, yelling, unidentified sadness, and the signature dish of disrespectful behavior finished with a sprinkling of attitude… I hope you enjoy your stay! This past week I have spoken with many distraught middle schoolers. The theme was so consistent. Sadness. The children are confused by the strong adolescent emotions. They are sad and they don't know why. I am suspecting that many of you have seen this with your child, and if you have not, stay tuned. I have good news. This is totally normal. Feeling sad at this age is to be expected, and as a parent, it can be confusing and difficult to deal with. Here are a few tips and reminders for helping you to manage your child's new and powerful feelings:

Don't panic. Your child will be OK. It can be so painful to see your child sad, but stay positive. If your child is sad for what seems to be an unreasonable amount of time, please call your school counselor. There are instances when children need help. Remember these are new and difficult feelings for your child to manage and they are not good at it. It is similar to you trying to ride a Razor Scooter. You are out of control and have no idea what you are doing.

02.09.21

Your child from many vantage points will appear to be temporarily insane and this is OK. When you feel like crying, try laughing instead. If you step back, their antics can be very funny. Each morning, if I listen closely as the school buses start to arrive, I can hear someone, somewhere enthusiastically yelling, “Da Bus, Da Bus!” Just another day on Adolescent Island! Andy Mullen

Middle Schooled by Andrew Mullen is an adolescent parenting guide for those who would rather laugh than cry!

Be patient. Don't lose your cool. Remind yourself they are under a lot of stress and confused. They can't help it. Remind them being sad for a short period of time is normal and OK. It is all part of growing up. 22
