Preparing for Winter What Is Extreme Cold?

What constitutes extreme cold and its effects can vary across different areas of the country. In regions relatively unaccustomed to winter weather, near freezing temperatures are considered “extreme cold.” Whenever temperatures drop decidedly below normal and as wind speed increases, heat can leave your body more rapidly. These weather-related conditions may lead to serious health problems. Extreme cold is a dangerous situation that can bring on health emergencies in susceptible people, such as those without shelter or who are stranded, or who live in a home that is poorly insulated or without heat.

When winter temperatures drop significantly below normal, staying warm and safe can become a challenge. Extremely coldtemperatures often accompany a winter storm, so you may have to cope with power failures and icy roads. Although staying indoors as much as possible can help reduce the risk of car crashes and falls on the ice, you may also face indoor hazards. Many homes will be too cold—either due to a power failure or because the heating system isn’t adequate for the weather. When people must use space heaters and fireplaces to stay warm, the risk of household fires increases, as well as the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Exposure to cold temperatures, whether indoors or outside, can cause other serious or life-threatening health problems. Infants and the elderly are particularly at risk, but anyone can be affected. To keep yourself and your family safe, you should know how to prevent cold-related health problems and what to do if a cold-weather health emergency arises.

Plan Ahead

Prepare for extremely cold weather every winter—it’s always a possibility. There are steps you can take in advance for greater wintertime safety in your home.

Prepare Your Home for Winter

Although periods of extreme cold cannot always be predicted far in advance, weather forecasts can sometimes provide you with several days’ notice. Listen to weather forecasts regularly, and check your emergency supplies whenever a period of extreme cold is predicted. If you plan to use a fireplace or wood stove for emergency heating, have your chimney or flue inspected each year. Ask your local fire department to recommend an inspector, or find one in the yellow pages of your telephone directory under “chimney cleaning.”

Also, if you’ll be using a fireplace, wood stove, or kerosene heater, install a smoke detector and a battery-operated carbon monoxide detector near the area to be heated. Test them monthly, and replace batteries twice yearly. Your ability to feel a change in temperature decreases with age, and older people are more susceptible to health problems caused by cold. If you are over 65 years old, place an easy-to-read thermometer in an indoor location where you will see it frequently, and check the temperature of your home often during the winter months. Insulate any water lines that run along exterior walls so your water supply will be less likely to freeze. To the extent possible, weatherproof your home by adding weatherstripping, insulation, insulated doors and storm windows, or thermal-pane windows. If you have pets, bring them indoors. If you cannot bring them inside, provide adequate shelter to keep them warm and make sure that they have access to unfrozen water.

Salt Alternatives For Treating Icy Sidewalks And Driveways Spreading rock salt (sodium chloride) on roads and driveways reduces ice formation, allowing for safer travel for pedestrians and motorists. Too much salt, however, can corrode metal on cars, damage gardens and trees, and pollute our local streams. All landowners can be part of the solution by using alternative products or by using salt at recommended times and rates. There are several products that can be used instead of salt. Here are a few options to consider: Sand, clean kitty litter, and used coffee grounds - These products provide great traction. Sand can easily be swept up and disposed of afterwards, but kitty litter often creates mushy clumps. These products will absorb sunlight, contributing to melting and will not harm nearby plants and soil. Ashes - For those with a wood burning fireplace, ashes are a great option. They provide a lot of traction and absorb sunlight, so will melt ice quickly on a sunny day. And they're free! Beet juice - Increasingly being used by highway departments on its own or mixed with salt, this safe and natural product allows ice to melt even when air temperatures are extremely cold. Potassium acetate, calcium magnesium acetate - Acetates are super-effective even at extremely low temperatures and are biodegradable. The drawback? Price. They cost several times as much as rock salt and can be difficult to find. This is a good solution for small areas in environmentally sensitive locations, such as floodplains. Other "chlorides": calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, potassium chloride - Rock salt (sodium chloride) is not the only chloride product that can melt ice. These other products are generally more expensive than rock salt, but work better at low temperatures. Calcium chloride is the preferred choice over magnesium chloride, as it works at lower temperatures and is applied at a lower rate, leading to less chloride in our streams. Potassium chloride is considered safest for pets and plants, but is often more expensive and does not work well at lower temperatures. All chloride products contribute to pollutant loads in our streams and their use should be minimized If rock salt is the only reasonable alternative for your property, remember: Remove as much ice and snow off paved surfaces as you can before applying salt to speed up melting A little salt can go a long way: Rock salt should be applied at about a handful per square yard Calcium chloride should be spread even thinner, about a handful for 3 square yards o

The air temperature matters. Rock salt is five times more effective at melting ice at 30 F than 20 F, and o o ineffective below 20 F. Calcium chloride is better for temperatures down to 0 F. Applying early can prevent ice crystals from forming and minimize the amount of salt used overall. FACT: Stormwater runoff can pick up chemicals, debris, dirt, and other pollutants that will contaminate our water. Why do People Die Shoveling Snow? Snowmageddon, Snowpocalypse, the Polar Vortex, SnOMG!

National Safety Council recommends the following tips to shovel safely. There is no end to the terms for "really big snowstorm," and those terms came in handy, particularly during the 2014-'15 winter. According to CBS News in Chicago, by early February 2015, around 18 people in the Chicago area had died in snow shoveling-related incidents. They ranged in age from their 40s to 75. Nationwide, snow shoveling is responsible for thousands of injuries and as many as 100 deaths each year. So, why so many deaths? Shoveling snow is just another household chore, right? Not at all, says Harvard Health Executive Editor Patrick J. Skerrett. "Picking up a shovel and moving hundreds of pounds of snow, particularly after doing nothing physical for several months, can put

Phoenixville Hospital Among First In Region To Offer New Therapy For Stroke Prevention For Patients With A-Fib Phoenixville Hospital is proud to be among the first hospitals in the Philadelphia region to offer patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AF) a new stroke prevention therapy alternative to long-term warfarin medication with the newly approved WATCHMAN Left Atrial Appendage Closure Implant. For patients with AF who are considered suitable for warfarin by their physicians but who have reason to seek a non-drug alternative, the implant is an alternative to reduce their risk of AF-related stroke. The implant closes off an area of the heart called the left atrial appendage to keep harmful blood clots from entering the blood stream and potentially causing a stroke. Over time, patients may be able to stop taking warfarin. People with atrial fibrillation have a five times greater risk of stroke. Atrial fibrillation can cause blood to pool and form clots in the left atrial appendage and this is believed to be the source of the majority of stroke-causing blood clots.2 Blood clots can break loose and travel in the blood stream to the brain, lungs, and other parts of the body. Electrophysiologist Vadim Levin, MD is one of the region's most experienced physicians in treating patients with atrial fibrillation. Dr. Levin was among the first few physicians in the state of Pennsylvania to perform the left atrial appendage closure implant procedures. "For patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation who are seeking an alternative to warfarin, this device offers a potentially life-changing stroke risk treatment option which could free them from the challenges of long-term warfarin therapy," says Levin. Implanting the device is a one-time procedure that usually lasts about an hour. Following the procedure, patients typically need to stay in the hospital for 24 hours. Dog Training: Stop Begging at the Table A dog begging while you are trying to enjoy your meal can be an annoying behavior. However, it is very common and can be easily fixed. Keep in mind that rewarded behavior will be repeated, so it is important not to give your dog any food from the table, as it will encourage the begging. Although your dog may whine, bark and give you puppy-dog eyes, stay strong! It's possible you've never given your dog table scraps, but that won't stop your dog from wanting it!

Here are some other ideas to make mealtime beggar-free:

Teach your dog to go to "place" during meals. Whether that assigned place be a bed or mat, lure your dog to it and reward them for just touching it at first. Place a few small, tasty treats on the mat and let your dog find them. As your dog investigates by sniffing, toss a few more on there. Then reward with more treats for your dog lying down on the mat. Your dog will eventually see that lying down on a specific "place" will get them yummy treats!

Tali Guy's Recipe Page: Appetizers! As their name suggests, appetizers are meant to stimulate the taste buds. Appetizers are always associated with parties and social occasions, getting together with friends and family, or with new people. They are attractive and interesting. When introducing a new and unfamiliar appetizer, your guests will be curious to try it, and it will become a subject of conversation. Serving cold appetizers will enable you to prepare ahead of time and be free to entertain your guests during the gathering. Add purchased appetizerstogether with those you have prepared by yourself to make it easier. A bowl of exotic olives or spiced nuts will always enrich the presentation. Interesting cheeses will also be welcome. The appetizers may be placed at various locations around the room where the guests mingle. You may also prepare a large platter containing several different appetizers. In this case, vary them so they will be different in color, texture, and the way they are held. Photo 1 shows 4 different items that together amplify the impression of the presentation. Curled parsley garnishes the entire platter and unites all the items together. Some of the appetizers on the platter may be purchased, such as marinated shrimp, stuffed grape Photo 1 appetizer platter leaves, and quail eggs. All you need to do is to make hard boiled eggs, and peel only a few of them, and the guests will figure out how to do the rest. Quail eggs will always make much impression and raise interest among the guests. We have ordinarily served vegetables with a dip next to them. Now let's change the serving by filling the dip in the vegetable. Sweet colorful peppers are great for this purpose. Lay each pepper and remove its upper 1/3 using a knife. Fill with any dip you like, garnish with parsley, and you've got an appetizer that your guests will love to try. Most appetizers consist of a base with something on top of it. Be creative when preparing the base. Bases made of a vegetable or fruit are much more interesting and attractive than those made of bread or crackers. Photo 2 shows a base of Boston lettuce leaves, filled with chopped tomatoes, red onions, cucumbers, parsley, black olives with olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper salad. Vegetarians and those who watch their weight will always be happy to indulge on it. Photo 3 shows a base of baked polenta. Slice a pre prepared log of polenta into 1/3" slices, and fry on both sides to reach crispiness and color. You can pair this base with unlimited tops. Photo 6 shows slices of star fruit topped with brie cheese, guava paste (find it in the Mexican aisle in the supermarket), another layer of brie, and a piece of papaya. Everybody likes pasta. Serve tortellini with a homemade or purchased pesto dip. Photo 4 shows it served with tooth picks to dip in the pesto. This appetizer may be in room temperature. The guests will especially love Pumpernickel squares with butter and smoked salmon (Photo 5). You can prepare them ahead of time. Before serving add a radish and cucumber for crunch and color, and garnish with capers and/or dill.

Pay attention to the surface on which you serve the appetizers. Photo 7 shows red lentils that create a color contrast to emphasize the darker main item. Place date halves (Medjool is the best kind) in mini baking cups, fill with brie cheese or any other rich cheese, garnish with pecans and you have a great instant appetizer. You may prepare it 3 days ahead and keep it covered in the refrigerator.

Make your life easier by preparing ahead of time. Vary the tastes, colors and presentation. Don't hesitate to try new tastes. The appetizers are small surprises attracting to your guests to open their taste buds, interest and curiosity, to be continued by the pleasant experience of the gathering. A concussion is a brain injury. Concussions are caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head. They can range from mild to severe and can disrupt the way the brain normally works. Even a "ding" or a bump on the head can be serious. Concussions can occur during practices or games in any sport, or even during every day life. Loss of consciousness only occurs in about 10% of all concussions. You may still be suffering from a concussion even though there was no loss of consciousness.

If you suspect your student athlete has a concussion, make sure he or she seeks medical treatment as soon as possible. Even if it happened outside of school athletics, the athletic training staff still needs to be informed to ensure proper medical treatment.

Home Care Instructions

With nine bedrooms, the shelter can accommodate up to 27 people at a time. Community Counseling Laurel House offers group and individual counseling for victims of domestic violence and their children, as well as for teens in violent dating relationships. Additionally, this department offers follow up services and a mentoring program for individuals and families. 24-Hour Confidential Hotline Laurel House’s hotline is available 24 hours a day by calling 800-642-3150. The hotline is answered by highly-trained staff and volunteers who will listen and provide support and resources.

Domestic Violence Shelter and Supportive Services

Children’s Program Children’s Advocates in our Shelter and Transitional Housing programs provide structured recreational time, as well as individual and group services which are designed to help children heal from the trauma of living with, and witnessing, abuse. Parenting support is also provided as needed.

What Is Domestic Violence? Domestic violence can take many forms, including physical abuse, psychological, emotional, verbal and financial abuse, sexual violence and isolation. Laurel House staff members and volunteers are trained to help victims of all types of domestic violence. Who Are Its Victims? They are our neighbors, family members and friends. They come from all social, economic, cultural, racial and educational backgrounds.

Transitional Housing The goal of this “Bridge” Housing program is to empower families to become selfsufficient. Services provided include support groups, life skills development, counseling, children’s services, casework, and connections to community resources.

Community Education Laurel House offers age-appropriate training about relationship violence for elementary, middle and high school students and staff, as well as for college and university students. Members of our Speakers Bureau are also available to present at corporate events, and for communities of faith, civic groups, and community organizations. Marian’s Attic Located in King of Prussia, our “upscale resale shop” welcomes donations of gently-used clothing, household items, collectibles, jewelry, accessories, books and DVDs. All proceeds benefit the programs of Laurel House. Information about domestic violence and about how to seek help is also available at the shop.

Domestic Abuse Response Team for Law Enforcement (DART II) Trained advocates are available to provide immediate on-site support to victims of domestic violence and their children, whenever law enforcement personnel respond to a domestic abuse incident. Laurel House also offers customized training for police officers and other law enforcement personnel.

Craft Page: Magical, Magnetic Snowman To make this magical, magnetic snowman all you need is a clothespin, acrylic paint, paint brushes and a stippler (optional): 1. Paint a clothespin with white paint. 2. Add three dots on the lower half in orange, red or black (using a stippler). 3. Next add eyes, mouth and brows in black. 4. Paint on rosy cheeks in pink or blush. 5. Add a carrot colored nose. 6. Add a white highlight to the eyes.

7. Using ribbon, tie a scarf around the mid section. 8. Hot glue a piece of magnet on the backside of the clothespin. 9. Place your snowman on the refrigerator or other metal surface.

Optional uses: 1. Tree ornaments Make a dozen snowmen with different expressions, colors and scarfs. Try using the miniature clothespins for variation. Omit the magnet from the back and add a string for hanging. 2. Dinner place cards. Cut a black shaped hat from construction paper and label with the guest's name using a white paint marker. 3. Food markers for dishes at your next get together with friends. 4. Decorate packages with your snowmen or add to a winter door wreath.
