LOCAL HISTORY Upper Merion Swimming Spots, Past and Present Summertime in Upper Merion through the years has always offered spots for people to gather and cool off in various pools and swimming holes. Among them have been the Balmoral Dam, Colonial Village Swim Club, Martin's Dam, as well as the Upper Merion Swim Club and the Lafayette Swim Club.

The Upper Merion Swim Club opened in the early 1960s and was located along Brownlee Road overlooking the Schuylkill River. It had three swimming pools, a picnic grove and other recreational facilities on 15 acres to serve the residents of the new and growing neighborhoods. It stayed open into the 1980s when it closed due to its proximity to the Tyson's Dump Superfund site.

The swimming hole at the Balmoral Dam, known colloquially as just “the Bal” served as a popular swimming (and in the winter skating) spot for well over fifty years. The Balmoral Dam served as a water source for the many mills located along Balligomingo Road. The picturesque landscape of the rolling hills and Gulph Creek is reputed to have drawn as many as 5000 swimmers in a single weekend. The Colonial Village Swim Club was established in the 1930s to serve the residents of the new Colonial Village housing development. It was located at the corner of Croton and Radnor Roads and was fed by the Crow Creek. It had electric flood lights, parking for over 400 cars, and a delightful beach playground. A season membership for a family of four was $50, and another $15 would get you access to the bathhouse complete with towels. It is now the Springbrook housing development.

Martin's Dam Club on Croton Road was organized in 1924 when two local Dads wanted their children and others in the community to experience the joys of a “good old swimming hole.” At the time, members swam in the actual dam for the old Croton mill now long demolished. Prior to the official organizing of the Martin's Dam Club, the spring fed water's of what was then known as Zook's Dam was a popular informal swimming spot. While the natural pond is still there, swimming is now in concrete swimming pools.

The Lafayette Swim Club opened in 1961 to serve the families of the Lafayette Park housing development. This club also had three pools: a T-shaped main pool, an intermediate pool and a wading pool for tots. The Lafayette Swim Club later became the King of Prussia Swim Club, and is now part of the Upper Merion Community Center.

CJ's Tire & Automotive wants to remind drivers during National Tire Safety Week (June 27 - July 3), that checking and maintaining their tires will keep them safer on the road this summer. National Tire Safety Week is an annual industry-led initiative designed to help consumers learn simple yet essential steps for proper tire care and maintenance. A recent survey of U.S. drivers revealed more than half of Americans plan to travel exclusively by car this summer to reach their vacation destinations, while nearly one-third said they plan to travel more than 500 miles by car.

Rotation

Routine tire rotation helps prevent uneven tire wear and maximizes tire tread life. Tires should be rotated, and alignment checked every 4,000 to 5,000 miles and tires should be re-balanced and aligned according to the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations or whenever the driver feels any vibration or sees signs of irregular wear.

All it takes to check tread depth is a quarter. Turn the quarter upside down and dip it into the tread groove. If Washington's head is fully visible, the tires have 4/32” or less of tread depth left. That is a sign that new tires are needed sooner rather than later. As tires wear down and the grooves become shallower, tires will simply have less grip when accelerating, cornering, and braking when driving in adverse weather conditions.

With that in mind, CJ's is reminding drivers that tire safety is as simple as three words inflation, rotation, and inspection:

Inflation

Tire pressure should be checked monthly, as well as before long trips or when carrying an extra load using a tire pressure gauge. Proper tire inflation pressure helps maximize vehicle performance and fuel economy, avoid irregular tire wear, and extend overall mileage and tire tread life. Drivers can find the correct tire inflation information for their vehicle in the vehicle owner's manual or on the tire information placard located on the driver side door panel.

If you find that you do need new tires, it's always best to buy tires in sets of four for the best balance of grip and handling. That said if you only need two new tires, be sure to place the new tires in the rear to help maintain the best traction and control on wet roads.

Inspection

Drivers should visually inspect the sidewalls for any signs of damage from curbs, potholes, etc. and the tread blocks for signs of irregular wear. They also need to make sure their tires have enough tread to grip the road, especially on wet roads.

Primary Care For Men

Why it's so important to see a doctor (even when you're not sick) "Men don't go to the doctor.” Chances are you've heard this or some version of this before—the old saying that men don't go to the doctor or are reluctant to admit when they're injured or sick. But this isn't just a phrase—it's a fact. In 2016, only 40 percent of men had had an office visit within the past year.

Because men are less likely to visit their health care provider, they may also be less aware of the health risks that specifically affect men, including: Heart attack - The leading cause of death among men and women is heart disease but, on average, men suffer their first heart attack 10 years earlier than women. Cancer - Cancers that are more common in men include prostate, bladder, colorectal, lung and melanoma skin cancer. Accidental injury - Men experience motor vehicle accidents, falls and unintentional fire/burns, poisoning and suffocation at a greater rate than women and in turn are more likely to die from these injuries.

For a variety of reasons, primary care for men usually goes to the bottom of their priority list. Men tend to put off scheduling annual appointments with their health care provider. Some men are hesitant to discuss their concerns because they don't want to worry their family, while others are afraid of being perceived as "whining" when they discuss bothersome symptoms or injuries. Some men just figure, why go to the doctor if I'm not sick? This hesitancy to discuss their health can prevent men from getting the timely care they need. By the time men visit a doctor for an illness or injury that's been plaguing them, they may have a more advanced diagnosis or require a more advanced treatment than they would have had they consulted with their physician earlier. "In most cases, men visit the doctor when their pain or symptoms have interfered with their daily life and quality of life so much that seeking treatment is the only option," says Michael Prime, DO, family practice physician at Riddle Hospital, part of Main Line Health. "Of course, it's always 'better late than never' but the sooner we know what a patient is going through, the sooner we can diagnose and treat their symptoms or disease and prevent complications.” Men's unique health risks (and why primary care for men makes a difference) "When most people think of men's health, they think about male cancers like prostate, testicular and penile cancer. You might assume that, as long as you're getting regular cancer screenings, you're 14

HIV/AIDS - Men account for 76 percent of all people living with HIV infection. Men who have sex with men are the most likely to have or be at risk for HIV. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common condition that causes pain, numbness, and tingling in the hand and arm. The condition occurs when one of the major nerves to the handthe median nerve is squeezed or compressed as it travels through the wrist.

What can a hand surgeon do to help?

A hand surgeon can order special nerve tests to verify the extent of the problem. Custom wrist splints are helpful for early stages of carpal tunnel syndrome. These splints are worn at nighttime to relieve pressure on the median nerve and to prevent the wrists from bending during sleep.

In addition to numbness and tingling, carpal tunnel syndrome can cause swelling, weakness, and night time pain. Patients sometimes describe dropping things unexpectedly and may have difficulty with buttoning shirts, tying shoelaces, or handling loose change.

Cortisone injections often provide excellent relief from symptoms. Unfortunately, symptomatic relief is only temporary, and most people experience a recurrence of symptoms after 3-4 months.

What causes carpal tunnel syndrome?

For chronic or more advanced cases, carpal tunnel surgery is often recommended as the best course of treatment.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is frequently seen in individuals who develop swelling or inflammation in their hands. People who smoke, as well as those with connective tissue diseases, diabetes mellitus, and hypothyroidism, may be at greater risk. Repetitive work activities can also cause carpal tunnel syndrome.

What can I expect from surgery?

Surgery provides more space for the median nerve and relieves pressure on the median nerve and tendons. This procedure is typically done under light sedation and local anesthesia and usually takes only minutes to complete.

While there are several different approaches to performing carpal tunnel surgery, usually a 1/2 inch incision is made near the wrist and use of a camera to release the tunnel under direct visualization. This minimally invasive approach minimizes discomfort following surgery and allows patients to return to activities more quickly. Over 95 percent of patients improve dramatically following surgical intervention, with most returning to daily activities within days. Many patients can resume heavier job-related activities after 2-4 weeks.

The median nerve acts as an electrical wire between the spinal cord and the hand. The nerve passes through the carpal tunnel in the wrist along with nine tendons that bend the fingers. When the tendons in the wrist become swollen and inflamed, the median nerve can become compressed by the transverse carpal ligament (see figure), leading to carpal tunnel symptoms. Early on, symptoms commonly occur during sleeping hours. In more advanced cases, the symptoms can become problematic during waking hours. Many sufferers describe symptoms with benign activities, like reading the newspaper or driving a car.

In 2013, the greater Philly region had more than a 7-month supply of homes. Now, it is less than a month. That means there would not be enough home supply to last 1 month if no new homes were built. Low inventory means sellers' market, bidding wars, cash offers over asking price, waved inspections, no warranties, quick decisions with higher risk, leaving buyers vulnerable to be burned. Over the last 24 months, buyers have had to assume more risk with fewer choices.

Home prices continue to break growth records with no price relief in sight. The majority of Zillow home experts predicted prices would continue to rise up to 46% between now and end of 2026. A more conservative group predicted a rise of 9.3% in that same time. Either way, prices are not expected to be going down. With inflation on the rise, a recession is looking more and more likely, however the housing market today is a far different beast than what we saw in the 2000s. This current market has been built on mortgages with sound credit and strong fundamentals which won't easily waiver even during a recession. Despite more than 100-basis point increase in mortgage rates in three months, housing experts still anticipate home prices to increase 9% this quarter. It has slowed from 19.6% increase over 2021 calendar year, but still high above historical averages. This is the time to list your home to get top dollar, but many home owners are fearful they will not be able to find their next home. “I know of people who sold their home quickly, but then have been stuck renting for a few years waiting for their hypothetical dream home to become available.

JENKINS ARBORETUM & GARDENS Native Azaleas

When we think of azaleas, we often picture evergreen shrubs sporting bright pink blooms at the start of spring. Most of the azaleas we see in our own yards and neighborhoods are the offspring of plants from Asia. But did you know that we have our own native azaleas? Unlike their Asian counterparts, azaleas from the eastern United States are tall, airily deciduous, and flaunt the most exquisite yellow, redorange, pink, or white flowers, many of which are fragrant and bloom into summer. There are 16 species of deciduous azaleas native to the East Coast and all but one (Rhodora - Rhododendron canadense) thrive here in the Philadelphia region. Keep reading to learn more about four of our favorites, all of which you can find growing at Jenkins Arboretum & Gardens. Pinkshell Azalea (Rhododendron vaseyi) is the first of the native azaleas to bloom in the spring, with delicately spotted pink flowers. It is incredibly rare in the wild, growing in bogs, thickets, and forests in only four counties in North Carolina. Despite its rarity in the wild, it is quite easy to grow in garden settings and provides a welcome dapple of color in early spring for the home gardener.

Swamp Azalea (Rhododendron viscosum) has relatively small, clove-scented, white flowers tinged with pink, blooming in late spring after the leaves have expanded. The name “viscosum” is derived from “viscous”, meaning “sticky” a reference to its sticky, hairy, tube-like flowers. It is a fairly common species and can be seen growing in the wild from Maine to Florida, westward to Texas. As its common name suggests, this species grows best in wet woods, but can tolerate less wet sites with a generous layer of mulch or shredded leaves.

Plumleaf Azalea (Rhododendron prunifolium) is the latest blooming of all the native azaleas, with orangey-red flowers displayed in mid to late summer, well after other azaleas have thrown in the towel. It is quite rare in the wild and may soon be considered an endangered species.

Pinxterbloom Azalea (Rhododendron periclymenoides) was once prolific in this region and can still be easily found while hiking here in Pennsylvania. The lightly fragrant flowers are typically soft pink, but can be nearly white or even lavender, blooming slightly before the emergence of new leaves in spring. The common name of this species is not a reference to its color. Instead, the name “pinxter” translates to “Pentecost” (the seventh Sunday after Easter) in Dutch and refers to this species' bloom time in the northernmost reaches of its range. Pinxterbloom opens much earlier than Pentecost here in Pennsylvania and is an easy-to-grow showstopper.

Plumleaf azalea generally grows in wooded ravines, along streams, and in mixed forests in the wild, so a site with afternoon shade on your property will help to prolong the bloom period. This is just a sampling of the incredible and breathtaking diversity seen in our native deciduous azaleas. To see these magnificent native azaleas in person, be sure to visit Jenkins Arboretum & Gardens, where more than 1,000 native azaleas are happily thriving. If you decide to add one of these amazing plants to your landscape, remember that all of them are happiest when planted in moist, well-drained, acidic soil with partsun to dappled shade. Full morning sun is ideal, but most of them would suffer in the intensity of midday sun. Drainage is important too, so loose, highly organic soil is recommended, along with a covering of woodchip or shredded leaf mulch. As with most shrubs, don't forget to water regularly and thoroughly until they are established. Tips from the Golf Tour of Greater Philadelphia

How do people learn to play golf? Some are lucky enough to learn from family members or friends. But many of us just figure it out as we go. This isn't always easy. Golf can be a bit less accessible and more expensive than other sports. However, the benefits of golf particularly during pandemics - far outweigh the challenges. The key to learning the game is to find something that fits your learning style; friends who can coach you, YouTube videos, books, and in-person lessons are all great options. Back in 1957 Ben Hogan wrote a series of articles for Sports Illustrated that later became a classic book called Ben Hogan's Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf.

Specialty shops and indoor ranges are getting into the game as well. If you like technology, indoor facilities are more likely to incorporate tech in their approach. Your body parts, the golf club, and the ball - all get videotaped and measured with 3D technology. You can even stand on a pressure sensitive mat which ascertains how your weight shifts at every point of your swing! As you improve, it's great to join a league! The Golf Tour of Greater Philadelphia (GTGP) is a locally-operated golf league for amateur golfers. GTGP is also an associate club of the Golf Association of Philadelphia. Members are eligible to play in GAP Member Play Days at private clubs in the area. Memberships are under $100, and include a USGA handicap account.

Modern pros still marvel at Ben Hogan's golf swing. Even though today's professionals use equipment that tests the limits of Hogan's ideas - his lessons are just fine for the rest of us. Hogan's five lessons walk you through important fundamentals on How to Swing. They include: The Grip The Stance The Backswing The Downswing And a combination of all of the above Want some bite size lessons in a book from another back-in-the-day teacher? Try Harvey Penick's Little Red Book from the man who taught PGA players like Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kite. Another great resource is YouTube. The variety of golf lessons available there is incredible. Shawn Clement's Wisdom in Golf is an excellent channel - loaded with free content that talks about all aspects of the golf swing. Shawn calls humans “gravity experts” and teaches players to trust our natural human abilities. He has an endless supply of metaphors and an evocative way to help you visualize and achieve your goals. If Shawn's style doesn't work for you, another instructor is just a click away. For example, Golf with Aimee has been reviewed as a great option for beginner women golfers. Some of us learn best face-to-face, and fortunately, traditional in-person lessons are available at nearly every golf course and driving range. If you feel more comfortable in a class, beginners can look for group lessons at most courses, or even at adult night schools. 28

Why Greater Norristown Art League by William Donnelly As Spring begins its arc to summer, we begin to fully cast-off winter's inertia and turn our attention to projects and activities we set on hold for many months. Gardening, hiking, kayaking, communing and enjoying the company of other people out in the open minus the frigid winds and indoors in welcoming cool, calm spaces. It may be for you, like it is for me, that the rejuvenating light of spring fills you with promise, hope, even confidence. In years past I used that uplifted sense of spirit to throw into things I would never have tried, all of them solo activities. However, the past two years have opened my eyes to the desperate need to foster a true connection with those around me, especially in my
