The 10th Annual Zucchini 500 race will take place on Saturday, July 13! Wheel packs will be available for purchase in advance on June 29 and July 6; they are $2 each. To participate in the race, children, 12-years of age and under, will create and decorate racecars using zucchini and UMFM-supplied wooden wheels and axles. The cars will then race in pairs down a 16-foot wooden ramp. Prizes will be awarded to the top four winners. Serving the Community The mission of Neighborhood Meals on Wheels is to provide nutritious, wellbalanced meals to the aged, convalescent and handicapped in our township without regard to race, religion, creed, nationality or economic need. Since its inception in 1974, Neighborhood Meals on Wheels has grown steadily, both in the number of patrons we serve and in the number of volunteers needed to keep the organization running smoothly. In 2018, thanks to generous donors to Neighborhood Meals on Wheels, 96 volunteers were able to deliver 3,854 meals to 47 homebound residents in our community of West Conshohocken, Bridgeport, Swedeland, Swedesburg, parts of Wayne, King of Prussia and Gulph Mills. Our volunteers delivered meals (one hot and one cold) 5 days a week, 52 weeks a year. A Neighborhood Meals on Wheels volunteer's primary goal is to deliver meals to the homebound, but just the presence of our volunteers assures a homebound person that members of our community care. For some of our homebound patrons the smiling face and warm “hello” of our volunteers is the only human contact they have all day. Sometimes a volunteer is the first to notice that a call needs to be placed to a homebound patron's emergency contact, because his/her condition has become a matter of concern. Neighborhood Meals on Wheels of King of Prussia reaches those residents of the greater Upper Merion Area who need our service. Many people don't know that we are here to serve all needy members of our community, not just the elderly. Anyone in the community who finds themselves in a position where they have become homebound, either temporarily or permanently, can contact us to see if we can help them with meals. For example, we might be of temporary service to a 19-year-old who lives alone, has broken his leg or is recovering from surgery and therefore finds it hard to shop for groceries and cook meals. Or we might be of permanent service to an elderly person who can no longer drive. Many people are also not aware that we will serve anyone in our community based on need, not based on personal income. Most of our patrons contribute towards our service of two meals a day delivered to their door. However, for patrons who are unable to contribute at all, we have a special fund set aside to fully supplement service to them. Neighborhood Meals on Wheels is proud of its forty-five year history of providing meals to those in need on a daily basis.

We are always in need of volunteers! Our 'home' is the Valley Forge Presbyterian Church. Each weekday we utilize two volunteers who meet at the church and travel to Norristown State Hospital to pack the meals. These volunteers leave the church between 9:00 and 9:15 each weekday morning and return with all of the meals between 10:30 and 10:45 A.M. Eight more volunteers gather at the church at 10:45 A.M. Once the meals arrive from Norristown State Hospital, teams of two leave the church with meals packed to deliver to four different routes in the Township. Delivery can take anywhere from forty-five minutes to a little more than an hour. We have volunteers that deliver meals weekly, monthly NEIGHBORHOOD MEALS ON WHEELS, INC. Environmental Update The Current Recycling Crisis

Ban the Bottle

Many communities are launching a “Ban the Bottle” initiative. Let’s start this summer by urging our children to take reusable bottles to day camps and trips to the playgrounds and parks. This will educate our children on environmental issues and stewardship, while also greatly impacting the production of waste, beautifying our parks, and strengthening our efforts to recycle more efficiently. As adults, we can also participate by implementing this practice in the work place and at home. Ban the Bottle will be an easy first step in bringing our community toward Zero Waste. Plastic water bottles consume an enormous amount of energy to produce, package, and transport. We spend over $11 billion per year on bottled water. Globally, it is estimated that more than 500 billion plastic bottles are produced each year, but only 14 percent are recycled. The rest are landfilled, burned or discarded in our environment. It is a staggering and depressing amount of waste that could have been reduced and re-used.

The Beginnings of Plastic and Throwaway Living

In August 1955, Life Magazine revealed a cover story entitled “Throwaway Living.” Inside this article the term "throw-away society" was coined to describe the new trend of plastic products that promised to minimize the time housewives spent accomplishing their daily chores. Why spend valuable time washing and reusing household objects like plates and silverware when they can be inexpensively made of plastic and disposed of after use?

This launched a plastic revolution that quickly infiltrated every part of our day-today lives. In the last fifty plus years we have seen an explosion of products created with a one-use life span. Ironically enough, these single use products are manufactured from plastic, a material made to last thousands of years. It is estimated that today the average American throws away approximately 185 pounds of plastic per year. This accounts for 10 percent of the total waste we generate. Not to mention 75 percent of this plastic waste goes directly to landfills, where it will not decompose for 500-1,000 years.

On March 1, 2018, China followed through with its threat to prohibit the import of U.S. plastics, mixed paper and other materials. For years, the US relied on China to take 40 percent of its recyclables for processing and manufacturing. Now, thousands of tons of materials that would have been recycled are going into landfills instead. Some municipalities have stopped collecting items that used to be recycled and others have been stockpiling them to combat this crisis. In Philadelphia, for example, the city can no longer keep up with both the volume and the contaminated condition of recyclable waste. As a result, about 200 tons of recycling material is sent to the huge Covanta incinerator in Chester City each day. The burning of trash releases a host of pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxides and particulate matter, which are tiny fragments of debris that, once inhaled, cause an array of health problems. In addition to landfills, a large portion of plastic waste ends up in our oceans and waterways. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, also known as the Pacific Trash Vortex, is a collection of marine debris in the North Pacific Ocean that amounts to approximately twice the size of Texas. Further, plastic is often mistaken for food by sea animals and has been found in the stomachs of more than 60% of all seabirds and in 100% of sea turtle species. When an animal ingests plastic, it can cause life-threatening problems, including reduced fitness, nutrient uptake and feeding efficiency.

Zero Waste

At the root of these complex issues is a simple change in habit. We need to reduce waste at the source itself. If we are more conscious about what we buy and use in our day to day lives, we can stop the chain of waste and litter before it even happens. That is why we are urging our community to consider adopting Zero Waste practices. Many communities across the country have already pledged to work toward a Zero Waste Plan or Resolution. Some examples include Oakland CA, NYC, and even Philadelphia. Zero Waste is about guiding people in changing their lifestyles and practices to match sustainable natural cycles which encourage waste prevention, reusing, recycling and composting the materials we typically dispose. This will promote clean production, prevent pollution, and create communities in which all products are designed to be cycled safely back into the economy and the environment.

What are the key benefits? Climate Impact

Extracting raw materials from natural spaces requires large amounts of energy and causes pollution, whether it is logging a forest, mining for minerals or drilling for oil. Processing these materials requires more energy and causes more pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Once they're used, the goods are simply dumped in a landfill or destroyed in an incinerator. In contrast, a Zero Waste approach conserves natural resources and reduces pollution from extraction, manufacturing and disposal. Reducing and reusing means fewer products are made, as people buy less and as products are made to last.

Save Money

Zero Waste builds a circular economy where one person's “waste” is a resource for something new. This greatly reduces the cost of having to buy continuous disposable materials for single-use such as like plastic water bottles, paper lunch bags, and plastic utensils.

Build Community

Zero Waste starts at home and finds its way through various sectors of the community. Community projects focused on re-use help redistribute useful goods to those in need, from leftover food donated to shelters, to furniture for refugees, to business clothing for those entering the job market. Communitybased zero waste strategies like composting at a community garden, tool sharing and skills sharing to reuse and repair, build capacity to reduce waste and costs.

Strengthens Health and Wellness

A Zero Waste approach ultimately protects the health of communities by reducing pollution in the air, water and soil by keeping toxics and waste out of landfills and incinerators.

The benefit of being waste conscious and reducing harmful impacts on our environment is beyond calculation. As residents, it is our responsibility to keep our open spaces clean and beautiful for generations to come. This initiative is the first step toward a more sustainable future.

GAS PUMP On the Mother of Divine Providence Church grounds, near a garage that was once a small barn or wagon shed stands an old vintage style gasoline pump. It has been there before the church and one-time MDP School were built. Back when the property was a farm. At the very least some seventy-five years.

CEDARCROFT PILLAR This pillar on S. Gulph road near the Gulph Mills Apartments is the surviving one of two that stood at the entrance to a Henderson family estate. Now misaligned, the pillar has a stone slab on top inscribed with the word “Cedarcroft”.

MILE MARKER The Mile Marker is near Hooter’s restaurant. It dates to the early days of the American nation and denotes 18 Miles to Philadelphia. But today, barely anyone pays attention to it.

ST BURGESS POSTS These posts once upheld the “ST Burgess Arboretum” sign that identified the arboretum named after a well-respected local arborist. The arboreal sanctuary was established and managed by Upper Merion Township when the one-time Irwin Moore estate on Moore Road was the Upper Merion Cultural Center.

Guidelines

What did you love to do before you had kids? Maybe the kids are ready to learn and participate in those activities. Long bike rides, fly fishing, golfing, knitting, wild boar hunting. If you loved it, maybe your kids will too.

The summer is here! What are you going to do? It is crazy how the years fly by. Having the summers to spend with your middle school kids is such a gift (really, it is) and the time can slip by so quickly. Take full advantage of this opportunity and make some amazing memories. Here are a few ideas for you and your family to think about:

When it is hot and humid, and you need time inside, have the kids watch the original Karate Kid. When it cools down, they can wax your car.

Totally unplug. If you go on vacation, you and your kids should turn off and put away the cell phones. This is liberating and allows you all to reset and get back to basics. Things like talking to each other, looking around instead of down and being present in the here and now are good things.

Do something new that is outside of your comfort zone. Try a new restaurant, go camping, visit a town you have always wanted to see. Doing some-thing new can be energizing and breaking the routine can be refreshing. (If you go camping, you may want to sprinkle hot dogs

Go back to the 1970's! I vividly remember being outside all day, working on my burn, playing Wiffle Ball (you still can't hit my knuckle ball), swimming and having completely unstructured time to be a kid. Allow your kids this same opportunity and embrace it! Play some Lynyrd Skynyrd, put on some tight OP shorts, relax and play with your kids. Having nothing planned is awesome. Un-structured time also allows your kids to use their imagination. Use all of the vacation/personal time you can. The kids are only young once. When possible, take more than a few days off so you can get into a re-laxed vacation tempo. I think in the travel business they call this the rhythm method, but I may be wrong on that. The school year is crazy busy with homework, sports, etc. Perhaps your kids have not had time to really help with the daily chores around the house. Consider creating new responsibilities for the kids during the summer months. Cooking lunch, folding the laundry, whatever helps your home run, they can contribute. EAGLES MERE—SUMMER CAMP FOR ADULTS Imagine waking to fresh cool air, sounds of owls hooting, woodpeckers drilling, and wandering with a steaming latté to the lake's edge to see eagles fishing on Pennsylvania's second highest natural glacial lake. Stormwater Management Washing Your Vehicle

Swimming Pool Owners Responsibilities to Protect Local Streams

Where you wash your car matters. The best option for our rivers is to take your vehicle to a commercial car wash, especially if you plan to clean the engine or the bottom of the car. Most car washes reuse water several times before sending it on to a water pollution control plant.

Every year, there are fish kills in our local streams due to the discharge of water that has not been fully dechlorinated to storm drains. Pennsylvania's Clean Stream Law prohibits the discharge of any swimming pool water without a permit. However, it has been the DEP's policy not to require permits for discharges from single resident pools provided the guidelines outlined below are followed. Please check if your municipality allows discharges to sanitary sewers.

Vehicles washed in driveways and parking lots allow dirty wash water to find its way to the nearest storm drain. That water often contains oils and grease, phosphates (from the soap) and heavy metals—all substances that are unhealthy for people, fish, and other living things. If you would rather wash your car at home, protect our local streams with these tips:

Home Car Wash Tips: Wash your vehicle on gravel, grass, or another permeable surface so the ground can filter the water naturally. Use soap sparingly and try to use non-phosphate detergents. Phosphates are pollutants that can be harmful to nearby waterways and promote excess growth of algae. Use a hose that is high pressure and low volume. Fit your hose with a nozzle that automatically turns off, or has a pistol grip or trigger nozzle to save water. Wash one section at a time and rinse quickly.

Residents and property managers who drain water from swimming pools need to be aware of ways to minimize environmental impact from pool water which contains chemicals that may be harmful to the environment.

When you are done, empty the bucket of soapy water down the sink—not into the street. If you are hosting a car wash fundraiser, consider selling coupon books. Many car wash companies offer fundraiser savings books to nonprofit organizations and sports teams at reduced prices. The coupons can then be used anytime by the supporter. Rain gardens are shallow, planted depressions that are designed to absorb water from your roof, allowing it to drain directly into the soil. Typically, a downspout from your home is diverted toward the rain garden. This can prevent hundreds of gallons per year from entering the stormwater system. Rain gardens are one of the most cost effective ways to manage stormwater runoff and can be a beautiful addition to your existing landscape design.

Rain Gardens Tips Check your soil first! Rain gardens require well-draining soil. Rain gardens must be planted at least 10 feet from any below-ground basement. Rain gardens can be designed to suit your landscaping preferences by using a variety of native, perennial plant species. This is not a vegetable or herb garden.
