'On Your Marc' 5K Run/Walk Set for August 4 It's the Event's 10th and Final Year

Social Media Safety: What You and Your Kids Need to Know

The world today is about electronic connections. They enable all of us to stay connected with old friends and to meet new ones that may be thousands of miles away. But while electronic and social media can help kids, there is also the potential for harm.

Actions like this can make kids easy targets for online predators and others who might want to cause them harm. Please remind your children that once something is posted it will forever remain posted. Positive postings are not an issue. It is those postings that are considered bad that will never truly go away and they may become a factor for them, or anyone of us, for years to come. A Partnership for Protection The Lower Providence Township Police Department and the Methacton School District maintain a close working relationship when it comes to the safety of our children. We will continue to support each other to cooperatively investigate and address any mutual issue of concern. If you have a question or a concern, please contact us. Here are some tips we've assembled on how to keep your kids safe online and while using their electronic media: 1. Always remember it is YOUR device. If you buy a phone for your child, then you are allowing your child to use your phone. No matter what your child tells you, the phone is your property. You own it. You have a right to take it back, to review what your child is doing with it, to turn off the data, and even turn off the service if you feel your child cannot be responsible for the phone. Since it is your phone, it is important that you make sure you know how to use it. 2. Find out what sites your child is using and learn about them. Snapchat, Twitter,

Peach, Instagram, Yik Yak or Facebook new social networks are emerging, and existing ones are changing all the time. As a parent it can be hard to keep up! Try to find out what your child is using and how they're using it, talk to them about why they like a particular platform and let them show you how it works. 3. Keep the conversation going, talk about the dangers. Educate your child about the potential dangers and consequences of social media misuse, many won't be aware of the potential pitfalls. Using real life examples can help to illustrate possible issues and are a great starting point for an open discussion. Also, take the chance to let them educate you! Discuss together the positives of social media. It's a great opportunity to let children show you their world, even if you don't always understand it. 4. Establish usage rules or guidelines. Depending on your child's age, you want to think about some guidelines and rules for usage. You may have some platforms that you don't want them to use at all or decide that you simply want to set a time limit for usage. Again, discuss with your child and try to find a set of guidelines they are happy with while instilling a positive set of boundaries. 5. Be aware of privacy settings. When some apps update, the privacy settings can

automatically change. Make sure you encourage your child to check them regularly and that you do this with them. Remember that most social media sites have a minimum age requirement of 13 to start a profile. Ensure that parental controls for computers and mobile devices are up to date so that you can monitor what sites are being accessed. 6. Warn about inappropriate texts and pictures. Inform your children of the very real legal implications of sending nude pictures of themselves to someone or forwarding a sexually suggestive picture that they may have received from a classmate or sending threatening text messages or emails. Remind children that once you hit send, you can't take it back and it truly never goes away. 7. Find out more. Recipe Page: Pasta Salad Pasta salad is my favorite go to for picnics, parties, and any summer event. I use the ingredients that we enjoy it, but the alternatives are almost limitless. Here's my recipe, but feel free to add or delete for taste or what you have on hand, including items from my alternatives list. I recommend making this the night before to let the flavors mingle. Ingredients: 1 large seedless cucumber mostly peeled (I like to stripe them to keep some of the dark green color), cut into quartered slices 1 container of grape tomatoes halved 1 can of small black olives 3/4 c shredded Romano 1c chopped celery including leaves 1 pkg thick cut pepperoni quartered

Alternative ingredients that work: Capers

Artichoke hearts chopped

In an extra large bowl (for easier stirring), mix the pasta and all the other ingredients with the bottle of salad dressing.

Green olives Mushrooms Zucchini Pepperoncini Banana peppers Jalapenos Carrots Eggplant chopped

A small head of broccoli cut into small florets, with very little stem

1 bottle Ken's Steakhouse Caesar Lite salad dressing

Blanche (drop into boiling water for about 1 minute, then drain and rinse with cold water) the broccoli, onions, peppers, celery (and any alternative ingredients that have a strong flavor raw or are very crunchy). They can all be blanched together.

Roughly one in 20 Americans will develop this cancer, and the tragedy is that it is entirely preventable by getting a colonoscopy.” Last year, the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that colon cancer rates increased from one percent to 2.4 percent annually since the mid-1980s among adults age 20 - 39. The American Cancer Society (ACS) released new recommendations for colorectal cancer screening guidelines, including the age screenings should begin for colorectal cancer. Previously, the screening age for a person at average risk was 50. The new guidelines have reduced that age to 45. “By lowering the screening age, our goal is to detect colorectal cancer earlier in patients who are at an increased risk for the disease,” explains John Marks, MD, chief of colorectal surgery at Main Line Health. “Even with

about your risk factors and what age you should begin screenings. People who are at high or increased risk for colorectal cancer can include those with: A family or personal history of colon or rectal cancer or colorectal polyps. A family or personal history of other cancers: ovarian, uterine, gastric and breast. A history of inflammatory bowel disease. A personal history of radiation to the abdomen or pelvic area as a result of cancer treatment. Your options for colorectal cancer screening The ACS' new guidelines also issue recommendations about colorectal cancer screening methods. While colonoscopy remains the gold standard for both the detection and treatment of colorectal cancer and precancerous polyps, other options are available. In its new guidelines, the ACS recommends choosing from six different types of screening tests: Highly sensitive fecal immunochemical test annually Highly sensitive guaiac-based fecal occult blood test annually Multi-targeted stool DNA test every three years Colonoscopy every 10 years

Summer Vacation Driving Safety Tips Summer vacation season is here, which means it's time to hit the road for some fun. But before head out with your family and a week's worth of gear stuffed into the trunk, remember these 6 safe driving vacation essentials:

1. Safety First

It's estimated that one in seven adults still don't wear a seat belt when they travel in a car, despite the fact that once every 14 seconds an adult is treated in an emergency room for crash-related injuries. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) claims that by increasing seat belt use, thousands of lives could be saved every year if everyone would just wear their seat belt. In addition, consider how you can use the long drive as teaching moments for your younger passengers about safe driving. Stop every few hours to let the kids stretch their legs. Adults should take the time to exit the vehicle and stretch too. If you become drowsy, don't hesitate to pull over to a safe location and rest until you feel able to continue the drive. And be sure to pack a cooler with healthy snacks like water, fruit, nuts and granola. Riding in a child safety seat is natural for younger children today. Getting young children into their safety seats in the first place is not the safety issue to address. Rather, it is ensuring the child safety seat is properly secured to restrict seat movement in a collision. You must use the anchors and tethers to tighten the child safety seat properly. Don't forget the top latch strap. It goes under the rear seat headrest or over the rear seat headrest, and clicks into place using the anchor located behind the seat.

2. Maintain Your Vehicle

Many of us are somewhat indifferent to vehicle maintenance. So before taking a long trip in your car, get it inspected by a qualified mechanic. The last thing you want during your summer road trip is a vehicle breakdown. At a minimum, you should change the oil and oil filter. You also may want to check: wiper blades making sure they aren't streaking or skipping across the windshield.

In spite of the best-laid plans, your vehicle still could break down during your road trip, or someone in your car could need some minor first-aid. Carrying an emergency roadside assistance and first-aid kit is important. Searching for these on the Internet and you'll find a range of kits varying in price and content. At a minimum, you need some basic first-aid supplies, a hazard triangle or warning flares for when your car is stuck at the side of the road, jumper cables, a flashlight with fresh batteries and a pair of gloves. And don't forget to stash a bottle or two of drinking water…just in case.

6. Watch Out for Pedestrians, Bicycles, and “The Other Guy”

tires… tires are among the most important contributors to vehicle safety. So before taking a long trip it is important to make sure they are properly inflated and inspect them for wear or damage. Tire air pressure should be checked before you leave your driveway. Follow the guidelines form setting the correct air pressure as found on the vehicle placard on the inside of the driver's door jam and/or in the owner's manual. If your tires are worn due to age, tire pressure neglect or a bad alignment, you should replace them. Also, be sure your spare tire is in good shape, and that your car's jack and lug wrench are present and accounted for. Before setting off on your summer road trip, make sure all your car's lights work. They're all important, so ask for help as you cycle through the headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals, hazard flashers and reversing lights.

If you own a vehicle that is not in fight-ready condition or simply does not get very good gas mileage, it may be worthwhile to rent a car for your summer road trip. Newer cars get better fuel economy, and they rarely break down. Plus, you won't put the extra wear-and-tear on your own vehicle.

In the summer, people go outside. They walk. They run. They bike. They chase Frisbees into the street. They might not be paying much attention as they frolic in the sunshine. As a driver, you have to keep an eye out for them. Watch out for “The Other Guy”. We're talking about both trucks that have large blind spots and take a long time to stop as well as all of the vehicles all around you. As such, it is dangerous for motorists to travel unnecessarily in lanes adjacent to other vehicles at the same speed on an open road. Either pass them or tuck in behind them. Don't drive in the passing lane if you're not passing anyone. And remember with large trucks, it is dangerous to cut in front and then quickly apply the brakes. Trucks are very heavy, take a long time to slow down and stop and are not as nimble as a car. Lastly, if you're about to miss your exit or turn, remind yourself that it's better to find a safe place to turn around and double back instead of diving in front of someone and then slamming on the brakes to make your last-minute move.

What is Heatstroke? Also known as hyperthermia, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)8, a child's body heats up three to five times faster than an adult's. When left in or gaining access to a hot car, a child's major organs begin to shut down when his or her body temperature reaches 104 degrees Fahrenheit (F). A child can die when his or her temperature reaches 107 degrees F. The AAP also warns that vehicular heatstroke can happen when outside temperatures surrounding the vehicle are as low as 57 degrees F.

Pediatric vehicular heatstroke fatalities can happen to anyone, anywhere and from any socioeconomic class, and they have even with loving and attentive parents and caregivers. Articles have been written asking the question, "How is it possible to forget a child?"9 Often it happens when parents or caregivers are especially busya or tiredb, or there is a change in the responsible adults' regular routine all of which increase the risk of making a potentially fatal mistake. Further study and documentation of PVH deaths would need to be conducted in order to clearly identify factors that may have contributed to known PVH deaths. In addition, almost half of all PVH deaths are not related to a caregiver unknowingly leaving their child in a vehicle. Twenty- seven percent of children gained access to a vehicle on their own, and 18 percent died after knowingly, or intentionally, being left inside a vehicle.

In incidents where children reportedly gained access to vehicles on their own, locking vehicles is an important barrier to prevent children from gaining access to the inside of vehicles. Teaching children cars are not play areas, and that keys and key fobs are not toys provide additional protection. Furthermore, knowingly leaving a child unattended does not typically equal malintent. Parents and caregivers have been known to leave children unattended in a car as they intend to do something quickly. In some cases, vehicles have served as a substitute for childcare. In general, a better understanding by caregivers of the risks involved due to vehicle heating dynamics is needed.

Vehicles Quickly Become Too Hot Vehicular heatstroke can occur any time of the year, in any state or community, and to any parent or caregiver. Even on relatively mild days, vehicles can reach life-threatening temperatures quickly. Leaving windows open does not prevent heatstroke from occurring, nor do particular vehicle exterior colors lessen the sun's heating effects. What does matter is how the rays from the sun interact with vehicle windows, creating a greenhouse effect. Studies have found that - on days when temperatures exceeded 86 degrees - the temperatures inside of vehicles quickly reached 134 to 154 degrees Fahrenheit. On average, in the first 10 minutes, the temperature inside a vehicle rises by 19 degrees. This quick rise in temperature inside a car can become fatal for children living anywhere. In areas where outside temperatures are at 90 degrees, however, temperatures inside of vehicles can become fatal for children in just 10 minutes. One such observational study published in Pediatrics10 in 2005 measured the rise of temperatures during a 60-minute period over 16 different days. During each observation, the starting outdoor temperatures ranged between 72 and 96 degrees. On two of these days, observations were documented while the vehicle windows were open 1.5 inches. The study found that regardless of the starting temperature, the rate at which temperatures increased inside the vehicles were consistent.

Eighty percent of the overall rise in temperature occurred within 30 minutes. On average, the temperature inside the vehicle rose more than 40 degrees during the 60 minute period of observation. The study also found that "cracking" windows open did not reduce the rate of temperature rise inside of the vehicle. The study concluded that vehicles heat up quickly, with most of the temperature increase occurring in the first 15 to 30 minutes.

John J. Willaman Education Center - Jenkins Arboretum The John J. Willaman Center is like a giant tree house, extending high up into the tree canopy, while simultaneously looking down over the gardens. It is a most spectacular garden sculpture, the form of which reinforces its identity and function. Thus, in so many ways The Center is the lens through which we understand and see into the gardens. Jenkins Arboretum & Gardens is a garden for all seasons, and the architecture of this “building”, with its walls of windows facing the gardens and connecting with their natural splendor, allows visitors to fully enjoy each and every season from the inside, as well as out.

The new Education Center opened to the public in 2009, named after a prominent botanist from the University of Pennsylvania, John J. Willaman, who happened to be the maternal grandfather of one of our leading donors. The Arboretum was closed for one year for the construction and expansion of our previously existing small building. For geographical, as well as financial practicalities, the old building was “cocooned” within the new structure. As such, the design and construction of the Education Center comprised a project that is primarily characterized as a rehabilitation and addition to an existing building. The designer for the new building was Architect Cee Jay Frederick of Cee Jay Frederick Associates in West Chester. We asked Cee Jay to give us some insight into his initial design concepts for this project. He said, ”Since such projects (rehabilitation and addition to an existing building) can often be a case of the tail 'wagging the dog', we had to find a way for the existing to be a part

of the whole but subsidiary to what invariably must be characterized as the larger and more functionally important nature of the new Education and Visitor Center experience and program. Hence, the actual shape and organization of the overall building, both on the site and relative to the existing structure, is such that it makes its new identity the dominant focus of the arrival and experiential sequences, while still permitting all of the existing functions to continue effectively.” At Jenkins, visitors often ask us if the architect was influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright. While Wright was probably not a direct influence, Cee Jay Frederick Associates is an interdisciplinary design firm, and this is one of the most important underlying factors to the design of our Education Center. Cee Jay Frederick started out his education and professional career as a Landscape Architect. Hence, the designs coming from his firm

It is apparent that the design intent for the John J. Willaman Education Center building was predicated upon it taking its rightful place among the trees, fitting in amongst them, akin to the placement of a “tree house”. In fact, features like the building's tree-branch form steel columns and the filtered canopy lighting effects provided by the extensive functional deployment of louvers reveal its hope to become, itself, one of the trees in the forest. Cee Jay shed further light on his design intent by telling us, “The Education/Visitor Center is at worst, or best as the case may be, more of a garden structure than a building, as it appears to be more fragmented and open, rather than a solid imposition on the landscape. Of particular importance in this regard is the extensive use of glass, which blurs the boundaries between building and landscape, reinforces the concept of an assemblage of landscape walls, and allows the visitor to feel a part of the Arboretum

LEED is a voluntary certification program, and can be applied to any type of building, from schools to office buildings to homes, at any stage in the life cycle of a building. LEED promotes a “whole building” approach to sustainability.

One of the environmentally fascinating features of the building is its geothermal heating and cooling system, which includes twelve 365 feet deep wells. Water is circulated through a loop configuration of plastic pipe, such that during the heating cycle, water circulates through an

underground loop, extracting heat from the earth, which is at a constant temperature of 57 degrees Farenheit. The heat energy is transferred to the geothermal heat pump, which compresses the extracted heat at a higher temperature and ultimately delivers it to the building in the form of warm air through a normal duct system. For cooling, the process is simply reversed. Because the earth is much cooler than the air temperature on a hot day, the geothermal system removes heat from the building and deposits it into the ground. The fluid is cooled by the ground temperature and returned to the heat pump for cool air distribution in the building. The ERV's (Energy Recovery Ventilators) bring in fresh air, while recovering the energy (hot or cold temperature) from the preconditioned air inside the building. Senior Lifestyles: New Safeguards Help Guard Against Scams Two new rules, enacted in February of 2018 by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), are designed to help protect the investment accounts of older adults from fraud. These rules are crafted to make it more difficult for thieves to quickly drain the assets in a brokerage account.

In the first rule, the broker or investment advisor is required to ask the investor for the name of a trusted contact person. This is someone the broker can contact if there are any questions about the account. The trusted contact is intended to be a resource for the broker if he/she

notices strange activity on the account. It is also intended to provide the customer's current contact information and health status or learn about any legal guardian, executor, trustee or holder of a power of attorney (POA). The second rule allows a broker to place a temporary hold on disbursements from an account if these disbursements seem suspicious. The rule applies to accounts belonging to investors age 65 and older or anyone with a condition that the broker reasonably believes makes it difficult for the person to protect his or her account. Before disbursing the funds, the brokerage firm will be able to reach out to the investor, the trusted contact or law enforcement. In the past, privacy rules prevented a broker from contacting family members when suspicious activity

was detected. Other rules prevented brokerage firms from halting transactions for any reason. However, in response to a rise in financial scams, FINRA, which regulates U.S. firms and professionals selling securities, established the Securities Helpline for Seniors in 2015. The helpline has received more than 12,000 calls and recovered more than $5.3 million for seniors who have been victims of fraud. This tremendous response was part of the impetus for the new rules. The new rules apply when opening a brokerage account or updating information for an existing account.
