Consumers are safer dealing with a contractor who has roots in the community. Look out for those who are: Selling door-to-door: Reputable asphalt contractors will sometimes offer their services if they are doing a legitimate job in the immediate area. Always ask for references.
Claiming they have leftover asphalt from another job: Professional asphalt contractors will know, with great accuracy, how much paving material is needed to complete a project. Rarely will they have leftover material. Pushing you to make a quick decision: Reputable contractors will provide a written estimate that will be valid for weeks or months. Yard Waste Collection GUIDELINES: ITEMS THAT WILL BE COLLECTED: • Tree branches no longer than 40 inches in length, in bundles no larger than 24 inches in diameter. These must be tied with biodegradable string or twine. • Tree limbs 5 inches or less in diameter. • Hedge and shrub trimmings bundled and tied. These must be tied with biodegradable string or twine. • Stumps from ornamental shrubbery with dirt removed.

(Main page, lower right-hand corner, select "Request for Services Form") • Requests must be made before 12:00 pm on the Tuesday of the week residents wish to have their yard waste removed.
Please avoid blowing grass into the street when mowing your lawn. This promotes the growth of weeds and can shorten the life of the street and curbing. If you notice that there is not an adequate seal along the curb and paved portion of the road, please advise the Public Works Department.

Take the BITE Out of Summer - Safely! We don't have the Zika Virus (yet), but now is the time Mosquitoes that cause West Nile Virus can breed in standing water as small as a bottle cap. Eliminating standing water breeding sites at home is the best long-term, environmentally friendly solution. Where standing water can't be eliminated, placing Bti "dunks" (available at hardware stores) in standing water pools is an environmentally friendly way to prevent mosquito growth. Keep grass clippings out of the streets that wash into storm sewers and provide a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
Check for standing water at these spots at least once a week, especially after rainfall: Birdbaths · pet water dishes · saucers under flowerpots (empty regularly or fill with sand) · open garbage cans · toys or other materials left outdoors · sheets of plastic, tarps and Jacuzzi covers · gutters clogged with debris or not graded for proper drainage · old tires (take to tire shop to be recycled or drill drainage holes) · litter (eggs can hatch in a pool as small as a bottle cap!), · holes where trees have been removed (fill with soil or turn into a rain garden) · lawn or landscaping depressions · floating debris in ponds · ornamental pools (stock with fish or aerate) · swimming pools (maintain proper chorine levels year round & make sure filter is operating from May through October)

Use yellow "bug" lights outdoors - they attract fewer mosquitoes (but they are NOT repellents) Carefully use insect repellent effective for mosquitoes with the active ingredients DEET (N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide), DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide), Picaridin (KBR 3023), or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus [active ingredient: p-menthane 3,8-diol (PMD)] following instructions. Be Prepared for Summer Storms & Power Outages In recognition of National Electrical Safety Month this May, we would like to remind the public to be prepared for summer storms and power outages. Summer storms can cause electrical safety hazards on your property. Lightning, downed power lines, standing water and power outages are just a few serious safety concerns. To protect your family, follow these safety tips: Q: What should I do if I'm caught outside during a lightning storm? A: Lightning strikes tall targets, so move to a low point and crouch down. Stay away from trees. Avoid metal objects (bats, golf clubs, fishing rods, tennis rackets, tools, ladders). And stay away from water (pools, lakes, puddles). Q: Am I safer in or out of my car during a lightning storm? A: You are safer in your car. Do not leave your vehicle during a thunderstorm. Q: What should I do if I encounter a downed power line?
A: Stay away from all downed power lines, and do not drive over downed power lines. If you are standing near a line that falls down, shuffle away keeping both feet together and on the ground. If you are in a car near downed power lines, do not get out of the vehicle. Report hazard to PECO. Q: My basement flooded and there is standing water. Is it safe to go down there? A: Never step into a flooded basement or building if water is covering outlets, appliances or cords. Never touch electric appliances, wires or cords while you are wet or standing in water. Never turn off power at the breaker box if you must stand in water to do so. Contact the co-op to shut power off at the meter. Q: I bought a portable generator to be prepared for the next power outage. Can I plug it into an outlet?
Without a transfer switch, electricity can backfeed through the home to power lines, creating an electrocution hazard for linemen making repairs. Also, never operate a generator inside; this can result in carbon monoxide poisoning.
A: Do not connect generator to an outlet or home wiring unless a transfer switch has been installed by a licensed electrician.

National Dog Show Charity Walk A charity fundraising event celebrating the human-animal bond 2016 Fact Sheet WHAT: "The National Dog Show Charity Walk" is a fundraising event and opportunity to benefit the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House, New Leash on Life USA and other charities who participate by driving participants to register for the third annual event. The walk will take place at Wilson Farm Park in conjunction with the Kennel Club of Philadelphia's annual National Dog Shows. Giving puppies too much freedom encourages distractions and restricts your ability to have control. You should keep your puppy close. A good rule of thumb is to keep your pup’s head in line with your body.
Mark the inappropriate pulling behavior.
Quickly altering your direction while using your voice to attract your puppy’s attention will shift your dog’s focus back onto you. A simple command of “hey” or “no” is a sufficient way to achieve this.

Hi Brittany! Before we discuss correcting and preventative techniques, it is important to understand why your puppy is pulling on walks. One of the main reasons dogs pull on the leash is because they have a lack of focus on their handler. Puppies are especially prone to being easily distracted since everything is so new to them. Here are some tips that can help you gain more control on your walks:
Bring high-value treats on the walk with you.
Using a treat, such as cheese or something you don’t give your puppy often, will help him/her be more driven to work harder for it. This will also help reinforce good behavior in the future.
Once your puppy’s attention is regained, praise and reward the good behavior to show a job well done. Never praise a bad behavior, as this will confuse your puppy.
Be patient, repetitive and consistent.
Remember that puppies need structure and consistency in order to learn. You won’t see change happen in one day, but repeating the same routine and correcting the pulling will help make the learning process easier and more beneficial. Heather's Recipe Page This issue's recipes have a few things in common, but are quite different. They create a very different finished dish - one a hearty, quick, pretty healthy dinner option and the other a quick, relatively healthy, make-totake dish for all those cook-outs and picnics your family is invited to or for a last minute happy hour you are hosting. What else do they have in common? TOTAL YUM! Enjoy!
Chicken Tortilla Soup
It may seem like Summer isn't soup season, but when you can just heat and eat & pair with a side salad, this soup is filling and a great Summer dinner! This recipe has a long ingredient list but many of them are kitchen staples and the long list makes for a depth of flavor and at least two servings of veggies. Enjoy for dinner and take to work lunches, this soup also freezes well. Servings: 8 - 10
Ingredients: 2 roast chicken breast (seasoned and roasted, or store bought rotisserie)
4 medium carrots, diced 1 medium size yellow onion, diced 1 yellow or orange pepper, diced 1T minced garlic 2 cobs of corn 3/4c frozen chopped spinach 1 can of petite diced tomatoes 1 sm can mild green chilis 1 bottle spicy V-8 2 boxes of chicken stock Siracha sauce Cilantro, dried Paprika Cumin Onion powder and garlic powder S+P Olive oil Directions: Rub corn cobs with olive oil and sprinkle with cilantro, broil, 10 minutes, turning frequently to cook and blacken. In 3T olive oil, saute carrots, onions, and pepper. After 10 minutes add garlic. Saute 5 more minutes. Cut corn from the cob. Add V-8, chicken stock, spinach, corn, tomatoes, and chilis. Simmer until veggies (particularly carrots are soft) Fork shred roasted chicken and add. Add about 1/2t each cilantro, paprika, cumin, onion powder, garlic powder, and S+P.

BBQ Chicken Bites
This is great to take to a picnic or cookout because it doesn't need to be hot to be delish! Bonus, it's SUPER easy, quick, and uses purchased ingredients! Scale this recipe to how much finished quantity you'd like. This recipe makes about 15 bites. Ingredients: 1 large boneless, skinless chicken breast cut into about 1/2" pieces. (about 15) 2t olive oil 1/2c bbq sauce, Sweet Baby Ray's preferred 1/4c shredded cheddar cheese
6 pieces of bacon, cooked but not crispy (try Kirkland brand pre-cooked from Costco, BEST one out there! If using precooked, heat it in the microwave to make it warm and flexible) S+P Toothpicks- colored or with frilly top preferred Directions: Saute chicken in olive oil about 5 min. Add bbq sauce. Simmer until bbq is reduced/thick. Sprinkle with S+P. Turn off heat, move all of the chicken close together in the pan. Sprinkle with cheddar cheese. Cover for 5 minutes. Remove lid and allow chicken to cool a bit. On a cutting board lay-out bacon strips, cut into thirds. On each strip, put one piece of chicken, that's got the cheesyyumminess on it, at the end. Wrap the bacon around it, secure with a toothpick. Serve on bed of lettuce.
Taste... add about 3/4t Siracha. Taste again. If desired, add 1/2t Siracha repeatedly until desired heat level. Ladle into bowls, top with shredded monterey jack cheese and tortilla strips. Recipes & Photos by Heather Chandler HChandler@sealstrip.com

Cop Camp with Upper Merion Police The Program
The Objective
Cadets are required to participate in physical activities and regimented police training. Many exciting sessions are scheduled including Accident Investigation, Traffic Stops with the Traffic Unit, Hostage Rescue with the SWAT team, K-9, Bike Unit, Crime Scene Investigations with Detectives of the Upper Merion Police Department, a demonstration from the Montgomery County Bomb Squad, and other aspects of police work. Cadets will also meet firefighters, paramedics and numerous police officers.

Computer Explorers/Crime Scene Investigations
Director: Computer Explorers Staff. The children will work with 1-2 teammates as they use scientific methods to solve crimes. They will work the field scene and the laboratory, as well as put their logic and problem solving skills together with forensics.
