LOCAL HISTORY The Hanging Rock and South Gulph Road
The Hanging Rock, also known as the Overhanging Rock or sometimes Drummond's head is a well-known local landmark. It was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. Gulph Road was originally established as a narrow dirt public road around 1712. General George Washington and the Contiental Army passed beneath this rock in 1777 on the way to Valley Forge and camped in the area for six days in December 1777 before moving on to Valley Forge for the winter encampment. Over the years since the advent of vehicular traffic the profile of the rock has been reduced by either erosion, traffic, or human efforts. In 1917, the State Highway Department made plans to remove it. Local residents led by District Attorney J. Aubrey Anderson, led a successful protest to save the Hanging Rock. Another attempt was made in 1924 to remove the rock and again there was public outcry. The strip of land surrounding the Hanging Rock was then purchased by Lidie Anderson (J. Aubrey's wife) and donated to the Valley Forge Historical Society. This society later became the Valley Forge Alliance, which owns that parcel today. Around that time, there was even a staircase which led people to a park at the top of the rock. In 1954 the state made plans to shave back the rock and possibly destroy it. Holes were drilled for the placement of dynamite to blow it up, but again public protest and lack of funding stopped the project. As many of us are aware, the section of South Gulph Road that passes the Hanging Rock between Arden Road and Upper Gulph Road has been closed to traffic. The plan is to build a cantilever over the Gulph Creek to protect the rock and raise the road above the 100 year flood zone. The $8.2 million state funded project began in January 2021 and was originally scheduled to wrap up by the Fall of 2021. New estimates say late Spring 2022. VALLEY FORGE PARK ALLIANCE nature center, the house has been vacant
Maruice Stephens House Campaign
If you've ever walked the trails at Valley Forge National Historical Park, you've no doubt noticed a striking historical building sitting empty and quiet on the Grand Parade. That's the Maurice Stephens House, built in 1816 on the site where Brigadier General Jedediah Huntington was encamped with his troops during the winter encampment of 1777-1778. Used over the years as a home, a farm, ranger dormitories, park offices, and even a
Trail users and history buffs alike can rejoice! The historic building will receive sorely-needed repairs to bring it back to life and share the Valley Forge story through exhibits and programs. Visitors who find themselves thirsty on the trails will now have a place to refresh themselves along the way. And it won't be just any old café: it will be operated by Aneu Kitchen. “It's not every day you get an opportunity like this,” said Meridith Coyle, owner, founder, and president of Aneu Kitchen. “I could have picked any location to open another café, but it's very special to be able to operate in a building like this and become a part of history.” With locations in Paoli, Ocean City and Margate, Aneu will bring healthy fare, juices, smoothies, ice cream and more to Valley Forge. Construction is expected to begin this fall. An addition, scheduled to be built next spring, will include accessible restrooms, accessibility ramps, and deck space for café seating. The VFPA is in the midst of a capital campaign to raise $980,000 for the project, which is a partnership with Valley Forge National Historical Park.

“VFPA's rehabilitation and operation of the Maurice Stephens House would serve as a shining example of the capacity of publicprivate partnerships to restore and breathe new life into historic structures,” said Rose Fennell, superintendent of Valley Forge National Historical Park. “It would also allow our partner to support the significance statements in our Foundation Document: to tell the story of the 1777-78 winter encampment of the Continental Army, continue the tradition of citizen stewardship, and support preservation of open space in a dense urban environment.”
since the mid-1990s. The Valley Forge Park Alliance (VFPA) is about to change all that, and is preparing to turn the house into a much-needed gathering spot and café, as well as the new headquarters of the VFPA.

TECH TOPICS
What is Tech Debt?
Tech Debt, aka “Technical debt” is a tradeoff between short-term benefits of rapid delivery and long-term value. One of the main reasons businesses experience tech debt is that they choose speed over quality. While getting into a market quicker than other companies or getting a software out to consumers quicker may seem like a positive at first, that is not always the case. This can potentially lead to negatives when all is said and done. There are common misconceptions on what causes tech debt.
How does Tech Debt negatively impact your business?
Tech debt has several impacts on a business, whether those impacts are apparent right away or not. At first sight, these impacts may seem like a minor annoyance, but often grow and become larger issues if not resolved right away. There are several ways that tech debt can have an impact on your business, some more impactful than others. Below are three ways tech debt impacts your business. 1. Reduced Progression One impact tech debt has on your business is paying off the "interest" that comes with it over time. The time taken to resolve tech debt is taken from progression, whether that is new projects or other upgrades. We all know that time is money and dedicating time to remediation can reduce progress.
What causes Tech Debt?
Finding the causes of tech debt are just as important as knowing how to deal with it. There are multiple factors that directly lead to companies experiencing tech debt, and some of these factors can certainly be avoided. Here are some of the top causes of tech debt: 1. Time Pressures Companies or development teams within a company often release software, hardware, or services that may not be "complete." This occurs due to companies putting in place accelerated timelines or getting into a market quicker. What this comes down to again is a company choosing speed over quality when it comes to their products or services. 2. Outdated Hardware While intangible factors can lead to this issue, tangible factors, such as outdated computers, can also lead to it. In a way, interest also builds up with tech debt. Putting off upgrades and replacements for hardware, essentially compounds interest, leading to paying more in the long run. Using old technology may seem like a good way to save money, but in reality, it is creating tech debt. 3. Changing Environment Industries and the consumer market are always changing and evolving. Consumer expectations always changing and new market opportunities arising, frequently create difficulties for IT leaders. Other ongoing challenges that create tech debt are new cyber threats and new market opportunities. These are factors that can be difficult to avoid or can be completely overlooked. 10
THE KING OF PRUSSIA NEWS
2. Poor Performance Pushing out products too quickly may seem beneficial at face value but could lead to poor performance down the road. Fixing poor performance from products or bugs within products creates more technical debt, taking manpower and time away from other projects that benefit the business. Technical debt is incurred when products display poor performance, taking time to fix bugs, system crashes, etc. 3. Tarnished Trust due to Tech Debt Whether a company is using outdated hardware or outdated software, technical debt will create issues. Old hardware or software being used by companies lead to increased security risks for those companies. These security risks can put sensitive data at risk, whether it's the consumer's data or the company's data. Would a business or consumer truly have a sense of trust with a company that may be putting their sensitive data at risk?
debt and how to avoid it in the future can ultimately lead to several positives: 1. Quicker Deployment Pushing out a product or a software quickly may be a benefit for several businesses. What is being put out to the end user may not be perfect and may have bugs, but the point is, it is still in the hands of the user. When a plan is in place to fix the issues and executed properly, then the quicker deployment can most certainly be positive. This allows for you to simplify complex solutions and as a project comes to completion, tech debt becomes a higher priority. 2. Tech Debt seen as an afterthought Going along with a quicker deployment, tech debt may seem like an issue. While bugs or certain coding issues may need resolved initially, the goal is to keep these issues at bay after the first fix. One way to look at this is crossing a bridge from implementation to operation. The initial step is implementing the fixes to whatever tech debt there is. Once that is completed, the product itself should be moved to something that can be supported. As part of the operation, the product should not need extra effort and time to fix issues.
Nuage Logic can help!
Tech debt certainly can cause issues for your business, but in a way can also be a positive. Depending on what your business's goals are, the effort to initially minimize tech debt may vary. Are you unsure how to spot tech debt within your company or how to handle it? Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns you may have! How can Tech Debt be a positive?
While technical debt can have negative impacts on a business if it is not addressed, there are positives to addressing it as well. The initial mindset when realizing you have tech debt is more than likely negative. Figuring out how to resolve the technical

Canine Arthritis
Metropolitan Veterinary Associates (MVA) is excited to offer a new treatment for canine arthritis starting this May. This procedure will be performed by Rebecca Wolf, VMD, DACVS-SA. Synovetin OA® is a unique way to treat arthritis in dogs. It's not a daily NSAID pill or chew, and it's not joint surgery. Synovetin OA is just 1 simple, safe, fast, non-surgical injection that gives your dog up to 1 full year of relief. Because Synovetin OA is dosed directly into the elbow joint, right where it hurts, it targets the source of the inflammation and pain that cause your dog to limp. And Synovetin OA is not absorbed into your dog's body like traditional dog arthritis treatments, so you can be confident that it's a safe and effective choice.
This procedure can only be performed by licensed veterinarians at veterinary hospitals permitted to use internal radiation therapy. On rare occasions, discomfort in the treated elbow has been seen in dogs that can last up to 72 hours after treatment. Short-term home-care instructions must be followed after treatment to minimize extended close contact such as cosleeping. To review the full veterinary prescribing information, visit synovetin.com/cpinfo.

HEALTH & WELLNESS
Eating to reduce your breast cancer risk.
You likely know that what you eat can impact your risk for health issues like heart disease or stroke, but did you know that diet can also impact your cancer risk? “No cancer is completely cured or caused by your diet,” says Robin Ciocca, DO, breast cancer surgeon at Main Line Health. “That being said, there is absolutely a benefit to good nutrition and healthy eating in managing that cancer risk. Unlike our family history, gender, race or genetics, our diet is a cancer risk factor that's within our control to manage or change.” And while there's no specific diet that has been tied to reducing breast cancer risk, studies have shown that making a few changes to what and how we eat have the potential to make a difference in lifetime breast cancer risk. Dr. Ciocca offers some advice for eating well to improve your breast - and overall - health.
cup of tea for a glass of wine a few times a week. It's likely that you look forward to the moment - not the drink.
Eat the right kind of fats.
While a high-fat diet hasn't been tied to breast cancer risk, there have been studies that examine how the type of fat you eat could impact your risk. All fat is not created equal. Just like fiber or protein, fat is a nutrient that is important for our body and it has a role in good nutrition. Instead of packaged, processed or fried foods, get your fat intake from sources like nuts, olives, tuna, salmon, avocado, or olive oil. These foods contain monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fat, which can actually help reduce plaque buildup in your arteries, improve cholesterol and reduce inflammation.
A staple of any healthy diet is lots of fruits, veggies and whole grains, and it's no surprise that eating a colorful array of produce can reduce your risk for several health issues and chronic diseases including breast cancer.
Limit alcoholic drinks to one per day.
Many studies have been conducted regarding the connection between alcohol and breast cancer risk, and all have found a similar result: The more alcoholic beverages you have per week, the higher your risk for breast and other cancers. This doesn't mean you have to completely give up drinking, but you should limit your daily alcohol intake to one drink per day. If you've gotten used to enjoying a fruity cocktail with dinner or relaxing with a glass of wine, ask yourself: Is it the beverage you're enjoying, or the ritual? Try mixing up a mocktail instead to satisfy your cocktail craving and begin substituting a 14

A healthy diet is important and one of the many modifiable risk factors for breast cancer. But the most important and effective way to manage your risk remains annual screenings. “An annual mammogram is the best way for us to detect and treat cancer early. It's very important for women to make their mammogram a priority every year,” says Dr. Ciocca. Women who are at a “normal” risk for breast cancer (no genetic mutations, no personal or family history, not of Ashkenazi Jewish descent) should begin getting annual mammograms by age 45. If you are at an increased risk for breast cancer either as a result of your personal or family history or genetics, talk to your primary care provider about when you should begin screenings. Main Line Health Cancer Care provides compassionate care through all stages of cancer treatment, from diagnosis through survivorship, for patients throughout the Philadelphia region and beyond. Dr. Ciocca sees patients in King of Prussia. To schedule an appointment with a Main Line Health cancer specialist, call 1.866.CALL.MLH (1.866.225.5654).
Fill your plate with produce.
Whenever possible, pick seasonal fruits and vegetables. These are often less expensive and contain more nutrients and less preservatives.
The importance of mammograms for managing breast cancer risk.
Pay attention to vitamin D intake.
While research has yet to show a direct link between vitamin D deficiency and breast cancer risk, several studies have indicated that there's a connection between the two. Get your vitamin D by spending time outside (sunshine is a great source of vitamin D!) and eating foods that include this nutrient, like juice, yogurt, milk and certain kinds of fish. If foods like these aren't part of your daily diet or you are vitamin D deficient, talk to your health care provider about whether or not supplements might be an option for you.
Maintain a healthy weight.
Overweight and obesity can increase your risk for several health issues, especially cancer. While your weight is bound to fluctuate over the course of your life, try to stick to a healthy weight. Your primary care provider can help you determine what that weight is, and how to stick to it. Keeping your weight at the same number or within the same range for a long time can be difficult. And, it can get even harder after menopause. “Stick to the key tenets of good nutrition a healthy lifestyle focused on whole grains, lean protein, nuts, seeds, beans, fruits and vegetables - to help yourself stay on track,” says Dr. Ciocca.

INJURY PREVENTION & RECOVERY
Gardening Tips to Protect Your Hands, Wrists, Elbows and Shoulders Havertown, Glen Mills, Paoli and King of Prussia, we are here to care for all of your upper extremity injuries and common conditions including arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger and shoulder problems. Spring is here - and that means that both young and young at heart are gearing up for outdoor activities. With the desire to enjoy “Mother Nature” at her finest, comes the risk of injury from cuts, scrapes, overuse or traumatic injuries. Gardening is great for your fruits, veggies and flower beds, but it can be hard on your body, particularly your hands, wrists, arms, elbows and shoulders. Here are a few tips to keep in mind while gardening this Spring: 1) Wear Protective Gloves We are more likely to get little cuts and scratches on our hands without gloves. These cuts could lead to an infection from fungus and bacteria in the dirt. Thick, padded gloves will protect your skin. Also, keep your arms covered for better protection from poison ivy and critters like snakes, insects, spiders and rodents. Gloves also minimize stress across your joints and soft tissues, thereby minimizing arthritis and tendonitis pain.
to push up with your hands and wrists with greater force. Repetitive motion can lead to tendonitis of the wrist and elbows. Use two hands to lift a bag of soil or use both hands when using clippers. Try to alternate which hand you use while digging or spraying to avoid repetitive stress. And lastly, plan ahead and place your supplies and tools into a basket or wheelbarrow, which will more evenly distribute the stress to your joints.

When shopping for gardening tools, look for wider, softer handles that are easier on the small joints in your hands and fingers. Work with your wrist in a neutral position to avoid stress to your hand and forearm and make sure to take frequent stretch breaks every hour to reduce the stress to your back and arms. AUTO MAINTENANCE & DRIVING SAFETY
Spring Car Maintenance Tips…From Your Friends at CJ's Tire & Automotive Check your lighting.
Check all exterior and interior lighting to identify any problems. When your vehicle's lighting is defective, other motorists may not get the message that you intend to stop or turn. The end result could be disastrous.
Check your filters.
Your car has a number of filters that are important to its longevity and should be replaced regularly. Check your engine air filter and your cabin air filter. They're designed to make your engine and you breath healthier.
After a long winter, you're likely ready to give up your hibernating ways for some adventure and sunshine. For many of us this means family vacations, trips to the ballpark, and weekend road trips. Whatever your style, chances are you are getting ready to hit the road, but are you confident that your car is in good enough shape to get you there safely and efficiently? Winter's weather, cold temperatures, and road salt have been hard on your car, so it is likely showing some signs of wear and tear. Spring is the perfect time to bring your car in for a full inspection to identify any minor problems before they become major ones. Here are some tips to keep your car running safely this spring and summer:
Check your tires.
Your tires are the only point of contact between you and road, so it's important to take care of them. Check the air pressure of all your tires (including the spare), and maintain the optimal pressure as recommended on the placard on the door jam or in your owner's manual. Check the tread for uneven or irregular wear and for cuts or bruises on the sidewalls and replace them if they are worn or damaged.
Change your oil and oil filter.
Changing your oil and oil filter at the intervals recommended in your vehicle's owner's manual is one of the best ways to keep the engine running trouble free. Neglecting to replace engine oil can result in poor engine performance, and even severe engine damage.
THE KING OF PRUSSIA NEWS
If they're torn or cracked your wiper blades won't do you much good in the middle of unrelenting spring showers when visibility is reduced.
Check all the fluids under the hood.
Check your power steering, brake, and transmission fluids; your windshield washer fluid; and your coolant. If the levels are low, top them up, and flush/replace them as recommended in your owner's manual. Keep in mind that your power steering, brakes and coolant systems are closed, so low fluid levels may indicate a leak.
Check your belts and hoses.
Cold temperatures can harden and/or damage rubber, so it's important to check your belts and hoses for damage. Check your hoses for hardening, softening, leaking, cracks, blistering, or other visual damage, and check your belts for looseness, cracks, frays, or glazing.
Check your battery and charging system.
Cold temperatures can also do a number on your battery, so now is a good time to have it tested and that the connections are clean, tight, and corrosion free. If your battery is more than five years old, you should consider having it replaced before it leaves you stranded.

INSURANCE TIPS FOR RV TRAVEL This RV travel checklist helps you pack for your trip.
Decide what amenities you want. From rustic or Wi-Fi enabled, pools to exercise facilities, camping options run the gamut.
Get stocked up and prepared when an old-fashioned RV road trip is in your future.
Time your trip. Plan for the days of the week, weather conditions and special events you might want to see.
Is the all-American road trip on your summer travel plans? If it is and you are planning on taking that adventure on the open road in an RV, use this maintenance and supply to-do list to plan a smooth ride.
Get motorhome or camper insured
The first step is to make sure your RV or motorhome is insured. Insuring your motorhome against damage and loss caused by common risks, such as fire, storms, theft and collision will help protect you against the unexpected on your travels. Talk to an insurance agent for more information.
Plan ahead for your RV travels
Flexibility is a perk of RV travel, but a little planning will help you avoid aimless driving, congested metropolitan areas and wasted time and save you money. Make an itinerary. A rough itinerary with the best places on route to eat, explore and stay will help alleviate some of the guessing. Locate your camp sites. Find the lot size and water, power and sewer hookups you need at GoCampingAmerica.com and GoRVing.com.
Plan your route.
Make a budget. And stick to it.
Stock the supplies
Outfit your motorhome, RV, and campers with the comforts of home. Some necessities include: Dishes, cookware and kitchen tools,
operating safely and reduce the risk of a breakdown. Before every trip: Check the tire pressure on your vehicle, Have the brakes inspected, Check battery fluid levels, Get your fluids topped off, and Wash and inspect the exterior, especially the roof of your RV, motorhome or camper.

ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE LAWNS
Your Yard: Swap Noxious for Conscious Plants By Dan Lynch
Pennsylvania made headlines recently when The Commonwealth added several popular species to its list of noxious plants, and banned their propagation or sale throughout the state. Controlled Plant & Noxious Weed Lists (pa.gov) The list includes two ornamentals that have been favorites of homeowners, landscapers, and city governments for years: the Bradford (or Callery) Pear (Pyrus calleryana), and the Japanese barberry (Berberis thunbergii). Bradford Pears, with their showy white blooms, herald the coming of spring. However, they spread easily, their wood is soft and their branches often break, and their flowers emit a putrid odor. Japanese Barberries are no better. Luckily, many options exist for hardy, native plants that can restore ecological health to our neighborhoods.
In with the Conscious
There are many native species that support and sustain a healthy ecological balance. Once you plant an appropriate native species in its natural habitat, it will reward you with a lifetime of beauty, water filtration, and wildlife habitat. Let's say you have a Japanese barberry hedgerow in your front yard that was installed years ago, and now you'd like to make an upgrade. Here are some fantastic native options to consider: Eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis) works well in sunny, mesic locations with good drainage, and provides early spring blooms for pollinators and birds.
High bush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) are real, edible blueberries that will feed the birds and your family! Put them in a moist area, and make sure they get plenty of sun. You might want to consider acidifying your soil, too.
Out with the Noxious
While consumers can no longer buy these specific invasive species, other noxious plants still lurk on store shelves. Plants like Japanese pachysandra (Pachysandra terminalis) and Butterfly bushes (Buddlejadavidii) can proliferate throughout local ecosystems, but provide little to no sustenance for pollinators and wildlife. (Not one caterpillar eats the leaves of a butterfly bush, yet the bushes often crowd out native species. No caterpillars, no butterflies.) As homeowners, we can learn about the potential threat of invasive species in our landscapes, and opt for natives instead. Committing to more conscious practices can have an immediate, positive, compounding effect in our environmentwe just need to know what to plant.
Bush honeysuckle (Diervillasessilifolia) will give you a boom of pollinators with its fragrant flowers if you plant them in a moist, well-draining spot in the sun.
Spicebush (Lindera benzoin) loves moist - but not wet - soils in the shade and can even be trained into a treelike form. Enjoy the early yellow blooms that give way to deep red berries in the summer.
Once you chose conscious over noxious plants and start your native takeover, you'll see an immediate increase in pollinators, wildlife, and water percolation - and you won't want to stop. The role of gardens, whether intentional or not, is broader than pure ornamentation. Each plant contributes something to the function of a wider, interwoven system, allowing us to be true land stewards, and it all starts in our own backyards. For more information, or to learn how you can restore beauty and ecological function in your landscape, reach out to ecologists at wildlawn.com, (844)326-7334, or contact@wildlawn.com.

GOLF ETIQUETTE
Pick a Club
Public or Private Golf Courses? Tips from the Golf Tour of Greater Philadelphia There are over 500 golf courses in Pennsylvania. From 9-hole public courses, to historic private clubs, to prestigious resorts, golf supports thousands of jobs and generates millions in revenue across the state. With all these options, how do you determine where to invest your time and money? Since members of the Golf Tour of Greater Philadelphia play both premier public courses and private clubs* we've put together a brief overview of the Pros of Public and Private Clubs. You can figure out the cons yourself. First, public golf is key in the Keystone State. Thousands of rounds are played on beautiful, challenging courses like Broad Run in West Chester, Wyncote in Oxford, and the Golf Course at Glen Mills.
The Pros of public courses include: Variety
Exercise your freedom of choice and explore different courses across the state. Each venue has its own gem to experience - like the island green at Bella Vista, and the 12 th hole at Pilgrim's Oak.
No barriers to entry.
Public courses are great equalizers, anyone who pays can play.
New venues, new friends.
The more you travel, the broader your network. And everyone knows golf is good for business, so enjoy making those connections with all the people you'll meet on the greens.
Price Point
Public courses offer affordable options - particularly if you walk on a weekday. And forget about those up-front membership fees!
The Pros of Private Courses include: Course Maintenance
Private clubs pride themselves on great greens. Conditions are often better, from the tees to the pins.
Fewer players.
Want a more private game? Play at a private course.
Greater flexibility for tee times.
Members typically have better access to the course whenever they like.
Extras
Tennis, swimming, great restaurants, ritzy locker rooms and babysitting services are just some benefits at many private clubs and resorts. If you would like to sample the best of both worlds, why not join a group that plays everywhere? Golf Tour of Greater Philadelphia's members play a variety of excellent public courses every Saturday throughout the summer. *And because we are an associate club of the Golf Association of Philadelphia, we have access to private courses during GAP Member Play Days. Memberships are under $100 and include a USGA handicap account. For further information, visit www.golftourphilly.org, or email TonyMcCarthy@golftourphilly.org See you on the links!
