Our regular season ends on November 18 with our annual Chili Cook-off. Whether your favorite recipe is hot or mild, meaty or vegetarian, traditional or trendy, we don't care! We love 'em all and we've had winners of all types. Visit our website www.uppermerionfarmersmarket.org to download the entry form! Don't want to enter but want to help judge the winners? $5 lets you taste all the entries and pick your favorite. Tasting begins as soon as all entries have arrived, and continues till we run out. Ballots will be tallied and prizes awarded to the winners. Our Winter Market begins on Dec 2. If you haven't joined us before in the off-season, here's how it works: We have a smaller group of vendors, all of whom have a way of pre-ordering. Every other Saturday from 10 am to noon, they set up on the lower level of the parking lot behind the Township Building. You can pick up your orders, and most vendors bring a little extra to tempt you. We have three markets in December, on the 2nd, 16th, and the 30th. Then from January to early May, look for us every other Saturday, beginning January 13th.

Upper Merion Emergency Aid have Millie Mitchell as our longest standing volunteer with over 50 years of dedication to making this program a success.

UMEA The year was 1942 and our country was at war in Europe and in the South Pacific. At home, families were making sacrifices as the men were serving their country in these troubling times. Unfortunately, some families in Upper Merion were facing severe shortages with the rationing that was part of the war effort. It was in the face of these difficulties that a group of women decided to form a community organization to assist those in the community that needed help. Thus the beginning of Upper Merion Emergency Relief. Their mission was to collect food and contributions so people in Upper Merion who were finding it difficult to care for their families would be helped through these volunteers. They established a modest food bank and with the help of those in the community were able to assist families in their time of need. Over the years Upper Merion Emergency Relief became Upper Merion Emergency Aid to better reflect their goal of aiding those in need.

UMEA is very grateful to all of our community partners and to all of those who aid us in making this program succeed. Hopefully with all of the community's help, UMEA will continue for another 75 years. In the 1960s as King of Prussia began to grow and new developments were opened the demand for our services increased. The organization developed a close working relationship with the Upper Merion Area School District to help identify families that would benefit from our help but also in conducting food drives to fill shelves at the food bank. In addition to the school districts support, the Township staff and the Police Department have been tremendous partners to UMEA. Churches and synagogues have generously contributed to our needs. As this support has grown so has the need for our services. Over the last 10 years we have been able to provide the school age children in our program with new sneakers for school as well as backpacks and school supplies. At Christmas we make sure all of the children get presents and provide a Holiday shop where the parents can pick up stocking stuffers and little extras for the children including toothpaste, toothbrushes, etc. We have been fortunate to get a grant from the Valley Forge Casino as part of their community outreach to help in these services. In 2017 we're helping over 50 families including more than 90 children. Upper Merion Emergency Aid has always been a totally volunteer organization so all of the funds we raise and all of the contributions we receive are returned to those we serve. Today, the women who run UMEA are continuing a tradition begun 75 years ago. It is a tradition of a group of caring individuals who are committed to helping those families in our community during a difficult time. We are honored to 4

Twice a day, King of Prussia Volunteer Fire Company VOLUNTEERS are called upon to help our neighbors. Whether it is a fire, rescue, storm related emergency, electrical odors, wires burning, or any other hazard you are concerned about or makes you feel unsafe; we are there to help.

Stormwater Management

Fall is Here...

And with it comes the opportunity to improve your stormwater management practices on your property. Below are some fall projects you can implement at home: 1) Plant a tree! Fall is a perfect time for planting trees and shubs. Be sure to plant species native to Pennsylvania! 2) Prune your trees, shrubs and perennials. Fall is the best time to prune trees and the other plants in your yard. Pruning allows them to jump start their growth and utilize more stormwater. 3) Clear leaves and debris from gutters and install a rain barrel. After clearing debris from your gutters install a rain barrel at the end of your downspout. This will allow you to collect free rain water to wash your car or water your gardens!

To be collected, leaves must be raked to the curb or be in biodegradable paper (not plastic) leaf bags along your curb. Paper bags are available at your local home center. Leaves and bags must be curbside on the Monday of the scheduled week of pick-up. Township employees and equipment are not permitted on private property for collections. Leaves or bags will not be collected if leaves contain sticks, stones, or other debris. Please make sure leaf piles are no more than two feet wide. Keep stormwater drains, inlets, roadways, and sidewalks free from leaf piles. Keep trees trimmed to 11 feet above edge of pavement to allow for the passage of collection trucks. Leaf and grass burning are prohibited.

During leaf collection season:

Zone 1, Zone 2 and Zone 3 have two (2) leaf collections scheduled per zone. Staff removes leaves that are placed at the curb and/or in biodegradable paper bags. Leaves and bags must be curbside on the Monday of the scheduled week of pick-up. If you do not have your leaves ready and/or you miss the first scheduled removal, a second removal has been arranged for your Zone. You may view the schedule during Leaf Collection season. If you still have leaves after the second scheduled removal, please place them in a paper biodegradable bag and bring them to the Compost Site for processing.

Native Plants

Native Plantings Support Healthy Habitat Changes to the landscape at the Arboretum are usually subtle and, yet, the landscape is an ever-changing palette. Beginning with a peek of new green buds in spring, the landscape shifts from spring's wildflowers to summer's ferns and onto the colorful hues of autumn leaves to the soft whites of winter. The changing patterns of light and shadow hint at each approaching new season. Jenkins Arboretum & Gardens is truly a "Garden for All Seasons".

While many botanical gardens feature more dazzling and beautifully colorful plantings, the Arboretum strives to be true to its mission and to protect a variety of natural habitats, supporting the biodiversity of native plant and animal species.

Why grow and conserve native plants? Native plants, fondly called "natives," are defined as those plants that occur in the region in which they evolved or were present prior to the arrival of the Europeans. By growing native plants, Jenkins is restoring some of the natural biodiversity of this area. Many wildlife species are dependent on the habitat provided by native vegetation. These plantings can enhance the wildlife population of the area. For example, the Arboretum's existing stand of cattails down by the pond provides nesting for many redwinged blackbirds and is the ideal habitat for this.

Natives possess traits that make them uniquely adapted to local conditions. Once established, these plants require less water than other plants - a trait that is becoming increasingly important for water conservation in this drought-stricken period. Pests and disease do not severely affect as many natives, resulting in less need for chemical controls. Fewer pesticides preserve biodiversity and reduce exposure to toxic substances to people and wildlife. Natives help to maintain soil fertility, reduce erosion, and require less fertilizer. Heather's Recipe Page Spaghetti and meatball/meat sauce is a classic. I don't know anyone who doesn't love it! There is absolutely no need to use sauce from a jar when you can easily make your own which has less sugar, less preservatives, lower sodium, and no ingredients that you don't know why they're there. I'm going to give you two versions, the chunky meat sauce and the smooth marinara with meatballs. Both can be served with whatever spaghetti you prefer, or even pasta short cuts (ziti, rigatoni, penne, etc). When you cook the pasta, three very important tips: 1. Add the salt- per the package. 2. When draining pasta, reserve some of the water to mix in with the sauce/pasta. The starchy water helps the sauce cling to the pasta. 3. Definitely go for the al dente cooking time. When you add the sauce and simmer a bit it will cook more.

Drain fat, and add the rest of the ingredients. Simmer and stir until paste is completely incorporated and it tastes good. That sounds silly but tomato paste is very acidic. It requires simmering until that acid taste cooks out. It's about 15 minutes. Toss with your favorite pasta with about 1/2 c of pasta water. Let simmer to reduce a bit if necessary. Perfect Marinara and Meatballs 2 large cans tomato paste (15 oz) 6 empty tomato paste cans of water Put all this in a big sauce pot on medium. Stir occasionally and cook about 30 minutes while you work on the next part.

I call this next part, Green Sludge! In a nutribullet or blender: 1/2 onion diced 1/2 red pepper diced (or roasted from a jar) 1 T minced garlic On to the sauces... About 1/2c fresh basil leaves Chunky Meat Sauce About 1/2c fresh sage leaves 2 cans petite diced tomatoes Leaves from 2 or 3 rosemary sprigs 1 small onion, diced Leaves from 4 or 5 thyme sprigs 1 yellow, orange, or red pepper, diced 3/4c wine (seriously, white or red works, just 1 small can tomato paste 2 empty tomato paste cans filled with water make it a drinkable one) (after you put the paste in, just fill the can 1T salt 1t pepper twice with water) 1T Italian seasoning or fresh basil, rosemary, WHIR-away!! You'll get a beautiful green puree. That's liquid money right there! and sage chopped (about 1/2 cup if fresh) 1/4t sugar Add about 2/3 to the sauce. At first it looks like 1/2t salt your ruining it because it looks overwhelming, 1/4t pepper but I promise it will be awesome! Just stir and 2T minced garlic 1lb ground beef or bison (just as tasty, way simmer. more healthy) 2T olive oil Saute the onions and peppers in the olive oil for about 5 minutes. Add ground beef/bison and garlic, Continually stir/separate meat. Simmer until meat is cooked.

Now the meatballs! 1 lb ground beef or bison (tastes the same, but way more healthy) 1/4lb mild Italian sausage 1/2 lb hot Italian sausage 1/2 c panko crumbs 1 egg The rest of the "green sludge". Mix with your hands. Do not use a mixer. This is the number one problem with restaurant meatballs, they're in a big hurry and they put it in a mixer and overwork the meat. Hands only! While your sauce is simmering, form whatever size meatballs you like with your hands, I prefer about golf ball size. Drop them in the sauce. Simmer the meatballs in the sauce for about 45 min (of course it will depend on size). Toss the pasta you've made with about 1/2c pasta water and sauce, simmer a bit if needed, then top with the meatballs. I promise you, the extra work will be worth it. You'll never go back to a jar. Especially because you can freeze the left over, or make a double batch, and just thaw it out for a weeknight dinner in about 15 minutes! Sprinkle both options with lots of grated Parmesan and maybe red pepper flakes if it suites you! Bon Appetite!!

Paper or Plastic - Those Pesky Plastic Bags What is the better choice - a paper or plastic bag? A reusable bag of course is the best choice. However, other bags also have their place.

A few years ago, a couple of communities in California banned plastic shopping bags only to find out that the sale of plastic garbage bags and wastebaskets liners went up. They discovered that many people use the

free plastic bags they get at the store for kitchen and bathroom trash collection, as well as diaper and pet waste cleanup. The free bags were replaced with bought bags. Those bans were lifted at the time. Chester County grocery stores have collection containers at their entrances to collect and recycle plastic bags. Some bags might rip or have a hole in the bottom, making them unusable for home trash collection. Back to the grocery store entrance container is the place for them. But there are many other items to recycle in those containers you might not be aware of. You can also put in plastic newspaper sleeves, dry cleaning bags, bread bags, product wrap (used on paper towels, diapers, bathroom tissue, water bottles), food storage bags, produce bags, bubble wrap, LDPE/HDPE films and any film packaging or bag that has the How2Recycle Label shown.

Please recycle only CLEAN and DRY bags and film and remove receipts or any other items. Never put plastic bags in your curbside recycling bin. A plastic bag at a recycling facility can jam expensive sorting equipment. Clean plastic bags mixed with sawdust will become plastic lumber - a deck, a dock, a fence, bench or even an attractive outdoor recycling container. With school back in session, it's important for drivers to slow down and stay alert for school buses and pedestrians - especially before and after school. These tips will help motorists safely share the road: STOP

Every vehicle traveling on an undivided highway regardless of travel direction must stop when students are entering or exiting a school bus. In addition, vehicles following directly behind a school bus must stop at least 10 feet away upon the bus's activation of red flashing lights and the engagement of a stop arm. vehicle until the children have reached a place of safety. Football parties, Halloween and holidays are quickly approaching and if your dog has any habits that may be problematic or bothersome, now is the time to work on them! With all of the fun fall events, it is important to keep your furry family member in mind for their comfort and safety. Many dogs have learned to overreact to the sound of a doorbell or door knock, leading to uncomfortable door greetings and potential escapes. This behavior can be problematic if you plan to have friends and family visit for a party or meal. It adds an extra layer of stress to what should be an enjoyable evening. Rude door behavior, such as barking or lunging at the door when people visit, is extremely common and a highly reinforced behavior. From the dog's point of view, every time a delivery man or mailman approaches your door, they are a possible intruder and require immediate attention. Your dog does not realize that those individuals were scheduled to leave regardless of your dog's reaction. In their mind, they have just saved you from a potential threat because the person does leave while your pet is throwing a fit or behaving poorly. Thus the behavior is reinforced. While you probably can't ask every person coming to your home to act as a training tool (people have places to go and things to do after all), you can prepare your dog to behavior more appropriately when they hear the doorbell or knocker. You have probably already taught your dog a variety of verbal cues without you even realizing that you have. Remember that your dog does not naturally speak English, but they have learned by association that "sit" means putting their bottom on the floor. They have also learned associations that you have

not explicitly taught them, such as the doorbell brings potential intruders to protect you from or friends to jump on and greet. It is your job to use the doorbell as a cue for a different behavior. Just as your dog has associated various words with specific behaviors, they are able to associate the sound of the door with a certain behavior. There are plenty of options for what your dog could do when they hear someone at the door. One option is to send your dog to their crate or their bed at the sound of a doorbell (you can substitute a knock if that fits your home better). The easiest way to begin training would be with two people: one to ring the bell and the other to train the dog. Start by having one person outside by the door and one person ready with treats or another high value reward (cheese, pieces of hot dog are great rewards!). Person A will ring the bell followed immediately by Person B running over to the predetermined location, such as a crate, and toss in a tasty treat. Person B should not say anything, as you want your dog to associate the bell with a location based on the reward -- not a word with the location. Your dog will probably still bark and get worked up by the door, but unlike past experiences, no one is going to come in or respond. After a few moments your dog will probably get mildly confused or bored and come see what Person B is doing. That's when they will find their tasty reward. Person B can give them a few more rewards for hanging out in their crate then release them.

Repeat this game of Person A ringing the bell and Person B rewarding the dog for going into their crate. Do this routine a few times a day until your dog is sprinting to their crate at the sound of the bell. Now you can start to wean out the treat that is waiting in the crate and only reward your dog after they have entered the crate. The next time an unplanned door bell ring occurs, your dog will hopefully run to their crate. You should follow and reward your dog still and even potentially close the door or give a "stay" cue, allowing you to answer the door as needed without a dog overreacting at your entranceway. You have now changed the meaning of the doorbell for your dog and ended the problematic behavior of poor door etiquette. You can greet your guests and continue on with your plans without worrying about an overprotective dog, escaping dog, etc. If you do not have a helper to ring the bell for you, consider scheduling a regular training party in the guise of football or movie night. You can invite a few friends over for a football game or movie (make sure it is airing on TV so that you have regular commercial breaks) and use them to help you train your dog. Of course, you can pay them in the form of food and drinks. Football games and movies that are airing on TV have fairly regular commercial breaks that you can use as training trials. Simply ask all of your friends to walk outside at the start of a commercial break and have them each ring the bell for you while you train following the directions above. You can act as Person B and have your friends ring the bell while you reward your dog at the appropriate location. As an added bonus, your friends can walk over and greet or feed your dog, as well. This allows extra rewarding for your dog and it's away from the door! Fall is a great time to begin working with your dog on indoor etiquette. Summer warmth is fading and many social activities begin to move inside, so it is important to ensure that your dog is as happy to have visitors as you are!

"You can say, yes you are still capable of doing these tasks but why not get help and free yourself for things more enjoyable than laundry and cooking every single meal." "When you get a professional to come do an assessment of your parent's needs that helps the conversation," says Wendy. "You may find that your parents may not need as much care as you think or may need more. They may also need a different type of care.
