Don't Let Mosquitoes Take a Bite Out of Your Summer For many people, it's one of the best times of the year. Summertime is quickly approaching and so is the season of patios and decks, grilling, seemingly endless yard work, and afternoons in the pool.

But as with most good things, there is a catch. Or should I say a buzz? A teaspoon of standing water combined with the warm summer weather creates the perfect breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Health Concerns We all know that being bitten by mosquitoes is no fun, leaving you itchy and irritated for days. But the annoyance your family suffers from mosquitoes and other biting insects can be more than inconvenient it can be deadly. Insect-borne illnesses are a cause for concern. Zika Virus made headlines last year with it's U.S. landfall in July and is still a serious concern in 2017. So far, over 5,000 cases have been reported in the United States, 222 of them locally transmitted. The virus is linked to microcephaly and Guillain-Barre

syndrome, two neurological birth defects that can be transmitted to the baby from the mother during pregnancy. The most common form of transmission, however, is through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito. Common symptoms include fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (pink eye). The illness associated with Zika is usually very mild, typically lasting several days and rarely severe enough to require hospitalization.

Examine them for clogs and damage that would cause water to collect. Drill holes in tire swings, trashcans or recycle bins so water drains out. Use soil to fill in low areas in lawns and landscaped areas where rainwater may collect and stand for more than seven days.

While Zika virus might still hold the spotlight this summer, other mosquito-borne illnesses such as West Nile and Dengue Fever are also active dangers. As of January 2017, 47 states reported West Nile infections, with over 2,000 confirmed cases. Many infected individuals do not exhibit symptoms, but those who do show signs such as fever, headache, body aches, joint pain, vomiting, and rash. Severe cases can result in encephalitis or meningitis, but those are rare (less than 1% of those infected).

Keep swimming pools clean, properly circulated and filtered. Keep children's wading pools empty and on their sides when they are not being used. Repair leaky outdoor faucets. Cut grass and shrubs short, as adult mosquitoes gather to rest in shady, cool areas. Keep your yard weed-free and avoid overgrown vegetation. It's Grilling Season - Do It Safely! There's nothing like outdoor grilling. It's one of the most popular ways to cook food. But a grill placed too close to anything that can burn is a fire hazard. Grills can be very hot, causing burn injuries. We would like to remind residents to follow these simple tips for safe grilling: Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors. The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. Check the gas tank hose for leaks by applying a light soap and water solution to the hose. A propane leak will release bubbles. If there is a leak and there is no flame, turn off both the gas tank and the grill. If the leak stops, get the grill serviced before using it. If the leak does not stop, call the fire department. If you small gas while cooking, immediately get away from the grill and call the fire department. Don't move the grill. Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill area.

Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grill and from trays below the grill.

When you are finished grilling, let the coals cool completely before disposing in a metal container.

Never leave you grill unattended. Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it. If you use starter fluid for charcoal grills, use only charcoal starter fluid - never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire. Submitted by Charles A. Beach Safety - Understanding Rip Currents make rescues themselves end up being the ones who drown. Instead, the best way to help is to throw them something that floats and immediately get a lifeguard for help. Spotting a rip current can be difficult, and really needs some practice. But when you go to the beach, start off by staying back from the water. Rip currents are easier to see at an elevated position, like a dune line or beach access, and then look for places where waves aren't breaking, so flat spots in the line of breaking waves. And then also where there's maybe foam or sediment in the water being transported away from the beach offshore. Before you go to the beach, always check your local beach conditions. Look at the wave forecast. If you have waves two to three feet high or greater, you could have strong rip currents. And then look to see if there's a hazardous rip current statement for your local beach. And then always check the tide as well. So rip currents often occur at low tide, and so if you're going to the beach during a period of low tide, just be mindful that strong rip currents could occur.

A rip current is a narrow, fast-moving channel of water that starts near the beach and extends offshore through the line of breaking waves. If you do get caught in a rip current, the best thing you can do is stay calm. It's not going to pull you underwater, it's just going to pull you away from shore. Call and wave for help. You want to float, and you don't want to swim back to shore against the rip current because it will just tire you out. You want to swim out of the rip, parallel to shore, along the beach and then follow breaking waves back to shore at an angle. When you first get to the beach, the best thing you can do is swim near a lifeguard. And then if you have questions about if the conditions are hazardous or not, ask a lifeguard. And then many beaches have things like a flag system, or other forms of communication to be able to tell you if the conditions are hazardous. But if you go to a beach without a lifeguard, when you get there, you want to make sure you know how to spot a rip current, and if you get caught in one, know how to get out. And then when you go in the water, always bring flotation. Always let a lifeguard make a rip current rescue, because often, the people that try to

People often misunderstand and think that rip currents only occur during bad-weather days at the beach but actually, you can have strong rip currents with sunny days and waves of only about two to three feet high. And the reason for that is that rip currents aren't really caused by the weather. They're caused by the waves and other factors like the tide and the shape of the bottom. Rip currents can occur anywhere you have breaking waves, like large sandy beaches on the open ocean. But they can also occur where you have hard structures, like jetties, or piers, or even rocks jutting out into the ocean. In terms of the tide, usually rip currents are going to occur more at low tide when you have waves breaking over the sandbar near shore. And that's the third part, the sandbars. Usually you're going to have strong rip currents where you have significant sandbar near the shore with a channel in it. Dr. Greg Dusek

PA Leads Nation in Lyme Disease Cases Learn to Protect Yourself and Your Family Pennsylvania has led the nation in confirmed cases of Lyme disease for three straight years. The disease is a bacterial infection that affects people of all ages and any organ of the body. It's called "the great imitator" because its symptoms mimic many other diseases. Most people get Lyme disease from the bite of an immature tick about the size of a poppy seed. Because they are so tiny and their bite is painless, many people do not even realize they have been bitten. In the early stages, Lyme disease may feel like the flu, with the person experiencing fever, sore muscles, headache, and fatigue. The Centers for Disease Control reports that rashes occur in 60 to 80 percent of cases. Most of the time, the rash is an ordinary red area. A distinctive "bull's-eye" shape rash with a darker edge is a definite sign of Lyme disease but only occurs in less than 10 percent of those who contract Lyme disease. When you're outdoors, take the following precautions: Know where ticks live - Ticks tend to be near the ground, in leaf litter, grasses, bushes, and fallen logs. High-risk activities include playing in leaves, gathering firewood, and leaning against tree trunks. When you hike, stay on cleared trails, instead of walking across grassy fields.

Dress defensively - Wear shoes, socks, long pants, and long sleeves. Tie back long hair and wear a hat. You can purchase clothing pretreated with the repellent permethrin or treat your own clothing and shoes. Use repellent on exposed skin - Studies show that repellents with DEET, picaridin, or lemon eucalyptus oil are the most effective. Check for ticks - Periodically inspect your clothing and skin for ticks. Take a shower - Once home, take a shower right away. This will wash away unattached ticks and allow you to thoroughly inspect yourself. Feel for bumps that might be embedded ticks. Pay careful attention to hidden places, including groin, armpits, backs of knees, belly button, and scalp. Parents should check their children. Put your clothes in the dryer - Running your clothes in a hot dryer for 10 minutes before you wash them will kill any ticks that may be there. Protect your pets Dog and cat fur can carry ticks inside your home. Consult with your veterinarian about tick protection for your pets.

New Invasive Insect in PA Spotted lanternfly, Lycorma delicatula is a new invasive insect in Pennsylvania and in the United States. It was first detected in 2014 in Berks County.

The insect is very distinctive and does not look like other insects in Pennsylvania. It has spotted wings with red tips. The body has a black and yellow winged section. Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture is currently working with Penn State Extension and Researchers, as well as DCNR, Kutztown University, Fish and Game Commission, USDA and local municipalities to learn more about this new insect and how to control it. Currently the efforts are for eradication. The Department feels with the assistance of the community and others we can stop this invasive pest.

This insect is known to feed on over 25 species of trees, shrubs and vines. Some of these include: Grape, Birch, Willow, Poplar, and Maple. The insect also likes to go to the Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus sp.) In Korea, this insect is an invasive pest and has been documented in killing grape vines. The egg masses have 48-50 eggs within and are covered with a grey/brown substance that looks very much like mud or dirt, see the picture below. The females will lay the eggs on any hard surface such as motor vehicles, stones, barrels, posts, grills, wood, etc. They do not lay their eggs on grass clippings or leaves. If you find egg masses, please scrape them off. To scrape them use a scraper, large stick, etc. and scrape in a downward motion. You can then place them in a plastic bag with alcohol or hand sanitizer and dispose of them in the trash.

An Old Enemy Ash trees across the country are in danger because of the emerald ash borer, an exotic pest that was accidentally introduced and discovered in the US in 2002. It is an exotic beetle that was discovered in southeastern Michigan near Detroit in the summer of 2002.

The adult beetles nibble on ash foliage but cause little damage. The larvae (the immature stage) feed on the inner bark of ash trees, disrupting the tree's ability to transport water and nutrients. Since its discovery, the emerald ash borer has killed hundreds of millions of ash trees in North America and cost municipalities, property owners, nursery operators and forest products industries hundreds of millions of dollars. Environmental News Why Trees Are Valuable to You!

Trees make your neighborhood safer. Research shows that apartment buildings with medium to high levels of greenery had 42% to 52% fewer crimes than those without any trees. People report a stronger feeling of unity and cohesion with their neighbors, and feel safer than residents who have few trees around them. The presence of trees in a suburban landscape significantly reduced the cruising speed of drivers by an average of three miles per hour. Faster drivers and slower drivers both drove slower with trees.

Trees are the ultimate "multi-taskers" and one of the most cost-effective tools for personal and neighborhood well-being. Trees cool air temperatures, clean air, reduce ozone, capture storm water, reduce energy costs, contribute economic benefits, provide habitat for wildlife, and much more. Trees significantly increase your property value. Studies show that mature trees in a welllandscaped yard can increase the value of a house by 7% to 19%. Amenity and comfort ratings were about 80% higher for a treelined sidewalk compared with those for a non-shaded street. Trees save you money on energy costs. Trees keep your house cool in summer. The cooling effect of a young, healthy tree is equivalent to 10 room-size air conditioners operating 20 hours a day. Trees can also keep your house warmer in winter. Good tree windbreaks can save up to 25% on winter heating costs.

Trees have positive effects on people. Visual exposure to settings with trees helps recovery from stress within five minutes, as indicated by changes in blood pressure and muscle tension. Trees in the landscape have been shown to improve the performance of children with ADHD and improve girls' success. Trees help control the negative effects of storm water. Leafy tree canopies catch precipitation before it reaches the ground, allowing some of it to gently drip and the rest to be stored or evaporate. A mature tree can store 50 to 100 gallons of water during large storms. Trees help you breathe better. Trees filter airborne pollutants and reduce the conditions that cause asthma and other respiratory problems. Researchers from Columbia University found childhood asthma rates were highest in parts of the city where tree density was lowest, controlling for all other factors.

On a quiet day, one may see a green heron, a kingfisher, a blue heron or a wood duck. Red-winged blackbirds nest in the cattails. Orioles nest at the woodland edge of the pond in hanging nests.

Because dogs perceive the world around them through their sense of smell, taking your dog for a run will benefit his physical health as well as enrich his mind by opening him up to new and exciting scents. Dogs who are wellbehaved on leash make excellent exercise partners and walks more enjoyable for everyone. Working on leash skills not only makes walking your dog easier for you, but increases his chances of getting to explore more places with you because you'll be more likely to bring him along. Here are some basic tips to help make walking your dog more fun:

The Right Tools!

Before you take the first step out of the door, you need to make sure you have the right tools to walk your dog. Every dog should be walked on a standard four-to-eight foot leash. Avoid retractable leashes in public, as they can cause harm if they fail to lock or break while you are out with your dog. Next, you need to dress your dog appropriately with identifying tags and the right walking harness or collar for your dog. If your dog pulls on or tightens the leash when he's

excited, a standard flat collar is not right for you. Constant tightening on your dog's neck can lead to injury and actually teaches your dog to pull harder as he associates the tightness with walking forward. Try to use a no-pull harness that can help you teach your dog to walk on a looser leash. Another great option is a face collar which can control your dog similar to the way a bridle controls a horse; wherever the face goes the body follows. While many people associate face collars with muzzles, they are actually very different and still allow your dog to fully open and close their jaws. Always be sure to fit a harness or face collar correctly and spend some time indoors getting your dog used to the new gear before taking the show on the road.

Teaching Your Dog To Walk With You

Although dogs are social animals, they do not naturally walk in line with each other. Therefore, walking close to you on a leash will take some time and practice. The number one thing to keep in mind when training your dog is that what you reinforce will be repeated, even if you did not reinforce on purpose. Even if you think they are being choked or restricted by their collar and should be learning to avoid that discomfort, you are reinforcing pulling by allowing your dog to move forward. After you make sure you have the right gear and that it fits properly, teach your dog that looking at you or "checking in" is awesome! Take a few small, tasty treats and hold the leash loosely in one hand.

Let your dog know you have treats and reward any calm behavior at the door before you even step outside. Initially you might feel like a pez dispenser feeding your dog for every check in and glance but it'll be worth it when you have a well-behaved walking buddy. Once you are out of the door, try to be aware of every time your dog acts and think if you want the behavior repeated. If the answer is yes, reward your dog. Reinforced behavior is repeated, so if you like it, reward it! During the acquisition phase of learning, your dog needs a lot of reinforcement to really learn a behavior and make it stick. If your dog makes a mistake or behaves in a way that you do not want to see again, do not reinforce the behavior by doing anything that your dog might enjoy. This includes continuing to walk. Each step you take, you are teaching your dog something. Only move forward or offer a reward for behavior you like. In time you will see that the reinforced behaviors occur much more frequently. Clear and consistent communication is how you will teach your dog to repeat the wanted behavior. Heel walking, or formal obedience walking with your dog right next to you, can be taught once your dog understands loose leash walking. Keep in mind that smelling is half the fun for your pooch. Try not to force them to walk in a heel position for more than 10% of any walk or they will not get the most out of the mental work out.

Beware Of The Three Ds!

With any behavior, we always want to be aware of the three Ds that can sabotage you and your dog: distance, distraction and duration. Whenever you are working on a new skill with your dog, you should try to do so in a low distraction environment where you can work one-on-one with him to set him up for success. Always be sure to know what you want to work on before you ever get your dog in on the game. Over time as your dog shows that he understands your cues or commands, you can begin to methodically and slowly add distance, distractions and duration to help your dog learn to generalize his behavior. Pick a calm area or even your own yard to start teaching your dog to keep a loose leash before going out to a busy trail or store. Keep training sessions short and fun. If you need your dog to get a little more exercise than a short walk allows, try to plan for a game of fetch in a fenced-in area or check out your local dog parks and dog daycare. Everyone loves a good life hack. I can't scroll through my facebook feed without stumbling upon some variety of tips or tricks to make life easier. Spending a lot of time in the kitchen, I've picked up a few. Some are short-cuts, others are ideas for improving your kitchen experience and the food you create. Recipes sometimes call for buttermilk. Not something I ever have on hand and if I need 1/2 a cup I surely don't want to purchase an entire container that will go to waste. So, I make my own substitute! Add a teaspoon of vinegar or lemon juice to a cup of milk. It's not quite as thick, and not great for drinking but in a recipe it's a perfect substitute. If I need to measure honey, peanut butter, or molasses, I spray the cup or spoon with cooking spray- you get all of the ingredient in the recipe and clean up is much easier! Vegetables are most evenly roasted when flipped half way through, however if the pan is preheated, there's no need to flip. Parchment paper is my best friend in the kitchen! I line cookie sheets, cake pans, loaf pans, casserole dishes, roasting pans, brownie pans... just about anything that goes in the oven gets parchment and cooking spray. This really helps with" release in one piece" of things like cakes and brownies, and bonus- it cuts clean up time dramatically, especially with roasting and casseroles. Reheating pizza can be dicey. If you're not picky, sure, go ahead and throw it in the microwave (ick!). If you'd like the pizza to taste the same as when you first had it, here's a method to try. Heat a skillet (with

cooking spray) on medium, place the pizza in the pan, and put a lid on it. This will keep the bottom crisp and the heat under the lid will re-melt the cheese. Cast iron pans are amazing, but clean up can be challenging. Never use soap, it ruins the seasoning on the pan. This totally grossed me out for a long time, but I got over it. Use kosher salt for a scrub, hot water, and a stainless chain scrubber. Immediately after cleaning, dry thoroughly, and rub the inside with a paper towel coated in olive oil. Sharp knives are safer knives. Keep your knives sharp longer by never using the cutting edge to scrape. Use a scraper or the back side of the knife to scrape the cut items from the board. Carrots and string beans can take a long time to cook. If in a rush, microwave them in water for a couple of minutes to shorten the cooking time in the recipe. When making pasta salad, I always blanche my crunchy cut vegetables. You can do this in water or the microwave, but it makes them not so extremely crunchy, brightens their color, and makes them more receptive to dressing. When baking a cake, if I'm not doing it from scratch, I always add a packet of Dream Whip powder to the mix. That stuff is amazing. Makes box mix cakes taste like scratch! When bananas over-ripen and I just don't have time to make banana bread, I peel them, put them in a zip-top bag and freeze them. They can later be used for bread, cake, or smoothies.

Canned tomatoes are underrated. I use them in almost every situation that calls for tomatoes other than a salad. They make great sauce, salsa, or soup ingredients, and there's no skin or seeds to deal with. Garlic is smelly, messy, and challenging to cut up. I always buy minced garlic in a jar. It's easy, tastes great, and it's simple to estimate how much minced would be in a clove. It is a bit more mild than fresh so I up the quantity a little. Speaking of garlic and canned tomatoes, next time I'll provide easy recipes for amazing meatballs and marinara sauce from scratch! You'll never buy frozen meatballs or jarred sauce again.
