PET HEALTH & WELL-BEING How cold is too cold for your dog?

Size and Weight

Acclimation

Body condition is important. A thin dog will get cold fast because they have less insulating body fat. However, obese dogs may move slower, increasing their exposure time to the cold.

What Can Owners Do?

Small dogs lose body heat faster than large dogs. Also, small dogs like chihuahuas have less fat padding around extremities making them more susceptible to ice and snow damage.

Dogs that live in colder areas regularly can tolerate more cold. Sled dogs get so used to the cold, they will sleep in the snow. However, if an owner moves from a warm to a cold climate and there is not sufficient time to acclimate to the cold, a dog gets cold fast.

Breed and Coat Type

Thick hair insulates the body. Dogs with thicker fur such as Huskies can withstand cold temperatures for longer periods of time. Short haired dogs have less fur insulation and will get cold quickly. Hair can also be shortened from grooming or medical procedures.

As winter approaches, temperature safety for dogs is important whether they are going for a short walk or playing in the snow. Dogs get cold at 45°F and below, and by 20°F, dogs can develop frostbite and hypothermia. Dogs can get frostbite, which initially effects extremities such as ear tips, feet, tail tip, nose, and the scrotum. If left untreated they will develop hypothermia. Cold temperature safety in dogs is dependent on different variables. Every dog is different, but use of general guidelines in the cold are important for prevention of winter related illness.

Snow and ice can stick to long hair around toes. This can be painful, and cause prolonged ice contact on skin and toe pads. Snow pellets stick to longer fur, decreasing a dog's body temperature.

Measures can be taken to keep dogs safe in the cold weather. Shoveling a small area for a dog to eliminate quickly in the cold without having to step through snow is helpful. Dogs can wear sweaters or jackets that extend along a dog's back and along the chest that is thick enough to block out wind while keeping out moisture. Booties that are warm and water resistant are great if the dog will tolerate them. Getting a dog used to these items can take a while, but persistence is key.

Age and Health Condition

Older dogs generally have more health issues that decrease their tolerance to cold exposure. Pain from osteoarthritis in aging dogs can make it harder to move around in the cold. Older dogs may also have conditions such as kidney disease, diabetes, liver disease, and cancer, making it more difficult to tolerate the cold.

As outdoor temperature drops, it's important to monitor dogs for signs of being uncomfortably cold. Hypothermia can set in rapidly and is life threatening. INJURY PREVENTION WHAT IS CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME?

Cortisone injections often provide excellent relief from symptoms. Unfortunately, symptomatic relief is only temporary, and most people experience a recurrence of symptoms after 3-4 months.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common condition that causes pain, numbness, and tingling in the hand and arm. The condition occurs when one of the major nerves to the handthe median nerve is squeezed or compressed as it travels through the wrist.

For chronic or more advanced cases, carpal tunnel surgery is often recommended as the best course of treatment.

In addition to numbness and tingling, carpal tunnel syndrome can cause swelling, weakness, and night time pain. Patients sometimes describe dropping things unexpectedly and may have difficulty with buttoning shirts, tying shoelaces, or handling loose change.

What can I expect from surgery?

Surgery provides more space for the median nerve and relieves pressure on the median nerve and tendons. This procedure is typically done under light sedation and local anesthesia and usually takes only minutes to complete.

What can a hand surgeon do to help?

While there are several different approaches to performing carpal tunnel surgery, usually a 1/2 inch incision is made near the wrist and use of a camera to release the tunnel under direct visualization. This minimally invasive approach minimizes discomfort following surgery and allows patients to return to activities more quickly. Over 95 percent of patients improve dramatically following surgical intervention, with most returning to daily activities within days. A Scavenger Hunt through History at The Willows Mansion owners Simon and Helen Neuman, after the repeal of the 18th Amendment. The bar room serves as a tribute to the mansion's original owner, John Sinnott, who was the owner of a distillery business and to Simon Neuman as well, who was chairman of the former Publicker Industries distillery business.

Who doesn't love a good scavenger hunt? Something about it appeals to our

inner drive to seek and find something that was lost, forgotten or hidden—sometimes in plain sight! A scavenger hunt can be a mere game - a form of entertainment at a child's birthday party - or an engaging way to teach young and old about something, like nature (Find a maple leaf! Find a bird's feather!),art (Find a Van Gogh! Find a Picasso!) or architecture (Find a cornice! Find a pediment!). The Willows Mansion, located in Radnor Township's Willows Park, is a great place for a scavenger hunt. There are so many treasures to be found at this magnificent old house and its surrounding property: secret compartments, decorative fixtures, relics, ruins and remains of what once was. A scavenger hunt at the Willows Mansion is fun, indeed, but it is also educational, as each discovery made during the hunt tells a story about the mansion and its history: the people who built it, the people who lived and worked there and what life at the mansion was like over the seven decades, from 1910 to the early 1970's, when it was called home by several prominent Main Line families.

4 — Terra cotta roof tiles (not too hard to find!) that were recently laid to replace asphalt roofing tiles. The new roof tiles were manufactured by the same company in Italy that made the original terra cotta roof tiles over a century ago. 5 — An art deco-style metal banister, clearly NOT the original banister (which photos show was made of wood), but lovely in its own right. 6 — Hidden cabinets that match the surrounding woodwork. 7 — A plaster dolphin.

The Willows Park Preserve, an independent, nonprofit organization that was formed to restore and revitalize the Willows Mansion, encourages you to visit the mansion and learn about its storied past and important place in local history. The mansion is open most weekdays, but it is best to contact the Willows Park Preserve in advance, by phone or email (see below), to be sure the house and the grounds immediately surrounding it are not being used for a previouslyscheduled public or private event. Of course, the Willows Park itself, which includes the pond, the picnic areas and the grassy hills, is open daily from dawn to dusk. The Willows Park and Mansion are located at 490 Darby-Paoli Road, Villanova, Pennsylvania. The letter “O” is a tell-tale “signature” of the mansion's architect, Charles Barton Keen, who also designed several other well-known buildings on the Main Line, in Philadelphia and in the Carolinas.

How Can Overloaded Sanitary Sewers Cause Flooding In Your Home?

The water in an overloaded sewer flows at a higher level than normal. If the home has sanitary fixtures or floor drains that are below the higher overload level, water can flow backwards through the sanitary sewer lines into the basement or other low-lying areas of the home.

Section 715.1 of IPC (International Plumbing Code) states that any plumbing fixtures that are installed on a floor with an elevation below the elevation of the manhole cover of the next upstream manhole in the public sewer, such fixture shall be protected by a backflow preventer in the building drain or horizontal branch serving such fixture.

1. Lowest floor is above the upstream manhole, no backup protection needed.

Such fixture connections might include washer hookups, water softener, backflushing lines, toilets, shower stalls, sinks and illegally connected sump pumps and floor drains. If you feel that your fixture connections fall in this category, contact your sewer authority to see if they will come out and inspect your situation and possibly help you with your next step to protect yourself from a messy surcharge backing into your home.

It's all about prevention. Frozen pipes can leave you without water in the worst of weather. And they cost a lot to repair. But with a few simple steps, you can easily preserve both your budget and your peace of mind.

When Temperatures Stay Below Freezing Let the snow cover your water meter. Snow acts as insulation, so don't disturb it. Allow a small trickle of water to run over night to keep pipes from freezing. Open cabinet doors to let warm air in your home reach the pipes.

Before the Freezing Temperatures Set In Know where your main water shut-off valve is located. Turn off your irrigation system. I don't know about you, but the past month or two have felt like—a bigger than ever sensory overload of lights, decorations, music, feasting, traditions. Then suddenly it's over. Whether you're a bit relieved or feeling twinges of regret, the idea of picking up the slack to make New Year's resolutions just doesn't sound that inspiring. But what if things that are fun actually turned out to be good for you, I mean, an immediate gratification type of good for you? Because losing a few pounds might be a good idea, and a dry January wouldn't be a bad plan either. You'll get your rhythm back after a few sessions at the gym. So keep those on the list, but let's find something that actually brings you happiness now! A great book came out this year by Susan Magsamen and Ivy Ross called Your Brain On Art: How The Arts Transform Us. If you haven't read it, do…it is full of research but very readable. Meanwhile, I will borrow from it and related sources to help us kick start 2024.

Drawing, whether doodling, coloring or freehand, activates the prefrontal cortex of our brains, helping us focus. Research indicates that doodlers are analytical and retain information. Drawing in general seems to cultivate a more generous and open frame of mind. There is something that feels especially healing about the rhythmic hand motions used to make sculptures with clay. In the process, serotonin, dopamine and oxytocin are released into the brain, producing a calm, reflective state. The ancient Greeks recognized the calming effect of reading poetry, and prescribed it as part of their medical treatments. Rhythmic and relaxing poetry triggers similar subcortical responses as listening to music. Another centuries-old stress reliever is sound therapy with the use of sound bowls in a very peaceful setting. Sound seems to help our cardiovascular systems by increasing nitric oxide production, thus reducing anxiety, fatigue and anger. Today we know that writing is a good way to address feelings and needs and process trauma. Journaling has been found to lower cortisol, reduce blood pressure, lessen pain, heighten immune function and relieve depression.

Without harping on our polarization, lack of communication, anxiety, sense of despair, burnout or just plain stress, let's agree that 2024 doesn't feel all warm and fuzzy here on planet earth. Each of us needs to take better care of ourselves… and the arts are a proven stress reliever.

Being outdoors may be the greatest stress reliever of all. Each of our senses responds to nature when we take the time to experience our surroundings. In recent years there has been a focus on incorporating outdoor spaces with architecture wherever possible and designing interiors that seem to bring the outdoors in, to create peaceful environments for healing and productivity. Any of the arts can bring us happiness and extend our lives. Taking a class connects us to people we might never get to know otherwise and everyone benefits from the warmth and generosity of people who love what they are doing and are happy to share what they know. There are many organizations that offer classes for any skill level and budget. Art centers, community centers and libraries have wonderful options. 'Hands on' is just one approach—museums and galleries are another perfect way to enjoy what interests you. Universities and parks often have free or inexpensive theatre and music productions.
