Dear Neighbors, RECENT THEFTS - Recently Haverford Township has experienced a rash of unlocked cars and garages being entered on various streets throughout the Township. Police Chief Viola assures us that they are stepping up plain clothed patrols in an effort to apprehend the culprit, but let's all be careful. Most crimes are committed by criminals finding an opportunity to steal; they are not skilled professionals but will take advantage of an easy target. To protect yourself, please follow these steps: Keep exterior doors, windows and garages locked, even while you are at home. If you see someone suspicious call 911 immediately. Work together with your neighbors. If a solicitor comes to your door, request to see a valid permit. Call 911 if they don't have a permit, and never let a solicitor into your home! Keep your car doors locked at all times, and keep valuables out of sight (in the truck or glove box.) The Police Department continues to investigate these crimes. Anyone with information, please contact the Haverford Township Police Department Detective Division at 610-853-1298, ext.1230. YARD WASTE - The Township will collect yard waste every Monday. Yard waste includes branches, brush and twigs - no grass or leaves! Branches must be cut to a maximum of 3' in length and bundled or placed in a can or a paper bag - no plastic bags - will be picked up with yard waste. When you collect yard waste in cans, they can't exceed a weight of 40 lbs.

MEMORIAL DAY SERVICE - The Memorial Day Service will be held on Monday, May 29 at 11:00 a.m. at the Township Building, 2325 Darby Road, across from Grace Chapel. The service was moved this year due to the construction of the new Municipal Services Building at Veterans Park. It will return to the Veterans Park when construction is completed. DARBY ROAD STREETSCAPE - The Township is starting streetscape improvements on Darby Road from Golf to Mill Roads. The improvements include new crosswalks and handicapped ramps, a decorative brick border next the curb, upgraded pedestrian signals with countdown timers and crossing signals. Decorative street lights and landscape improvements are also proposed. We are coordinating the work around the school schedule to keep the sidewalks open for school. NEW POLICE/MUNICIPAL SERVICES BUILDING - The construction manager from Reynolds Building Solutions provides monthly reports to the Board on the status of the new building. At the May 1st work session, it was reported that the construction is on schedule for an early September occupancy of the first floor by the Police Department. The second floor should be completed by the end of the year, and site work will be wrapped up in January.

Board of Commissioners Haverford Township is governed by nine Township Commissioners who are elected by the residents of each of its nine wards. Commissioners elect their own President and Vice-President at the beginning of each new year. The Commissioners appoint a Township Manager, who oversees all Township staff. Regular meetings of the Board of Commissioners are held the 2nd Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Quatrani Building, 2325 Darby Road, Havertown, PA. Summer Safety Tips Take the BITE Out of Summer - Safely! Your greatest water safety assurance comes from adopting and practicing as many safety steps as possible. Adding an extra safety step around the water can make all the difference. You can never know which safety step will save a life until it does. Stay Close, Be Alert and Watch Always watch your children and never leave them unattended Keep children away from pool drains, pipes and other openings Have a phone close by at all times If a child is missing, check the pool first Share safety instructions with family, friends and neighbors

Learn and Practice Water Safety Skills Learn to swim; it's fun and good exercise Know how to perform CPR on children and adults Understand the basics of life saving so that you can assist in a pool emergency

We don't have Zika (yet), but now is the time Mosquitoes that cause West Nile Virus can breed in standing water as small as a bottle cap. Eliminating standing water breeding sites at home is the best long-term, environmentally friendly solution. Where standing water can't be eliminated, placing Bti "dunks" (available at hardware stores) in standing water pools is an environmentally friendly way to prevent mosquito growth. Keep grass clippings out of the streets that wash into storm sewers and provide a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Search "West Nile Virus Earth Friendly Tips" for EAC info on how you can FIGHT THE BITE! Check for standing water at these spots at least once a week, especially after rainfall: Birdbaths · pet water dishes · saucers under flowerpots (empty regularly or fill with sand) · open garbage cans · toys or other materials left outdoors · sheets of plastic, tarps and Jacuzzi covers · gutters clogged with debris or not graded for proper drainage · old tires (take to tire shop to be recycled or drill drainage holes) · litter (eggs can hatch in a pool as small as a bottle cap!) · holes where trees have been removed (fill with soil or turn into a rain garden) · lawn or landscaping depressions · floating debris in ponds · ornamental pools (stock with fish or aerate) · swimming pools (maintain proper chorine levels year round & make sure filter is operating from May through October)

To avoid being bitten: Wear light colored clothing, and long sleeves & pants when possible. Repair tears in window screens to keep mosquitoes from sneaking into your home. Stay indoors at sunrise, sunset and early evening when mosquitoes are most active. Use yellow "bug" lights outdoors - they attract fewer mosquitoes (but they are NOT repellents) Carefully use insect repellent effective for mosquitoes with the active ingredients DEET (N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide), DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide), Picaridin (KBR 3023), or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus [active ingredient: p-menthane 3,8-diol (PMD)] following instructions. Public Works Information YARD WASTE NOTICE Brush is picked up on Monday and must be out for collection by 6:30 a.m. Please keep the following rules in mind when placing yard waste out for collection: NO GRASS OR LEAVES may be added to this collection; they will be picked up in your regular trash. During the fall season, leaves will be collected separately. Branches must be tied together with rope or twine, DO NOT USE WIRE. Brush is to be put out in cans or brown biodegradable bags, NO PLASTIC BAGS. Yard waste should include: small tree/hedge trimmings, weeds, branches (less than three feet in length and 1 Â˝ inches in diameter.) Please contact the Department of Public Works at 610-446-1000 ext. 2264 if you have any questions. Recycling: We encourage all residents to recycle. Recycling cans are available at the Township Building for $20.00. Alternatively, free recycling decal stickers are available in the Department of Public Works or the main receptionist desk for residents who have purchased their own unlabeled bins. Latex Paint: Please call 610-446-1000 ext. 2264 to dispose of latex paint. We will be happy to arrange a pickup. Street Lights: If a street light out in your neighborhood, call and report it to Public Works at 610- 446-1000 ext. 2264 and our electrical department will respond. If you receive our voicemail, please indicate the closest address and street name of the streetlight in need of service.

Free residential collection events are held outdoors from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., rain or shine. Residents may attend any event as well as any Household Hazardous Waste event held by Bucks, Chester, Delaware, or Philadelphia Counties.

Officer Michael Kenny was named officer of the year in 2017. Ofc. Kenny joined the Haverford Township Police Department in 2011. From his first day, he showed the utmost dedication to the job. He is currently a patrolman who has served a tour in the Detective Division (2015) and is currently a member of the Honor Guard Unit as well as a K9 Decoy. Officer Kenny received 2 unit commendations and had three Narcan saves in 2016.

Haverford Township Police Honor Guard trains the 3d U.S. Infantry In April 2017 the Haverford Township Police Honor Guard was invited to train the 3d U.S. Infantry, traditionally known as "The Old Guard," which is the oldest active-duty infantry unit in the Army, serving our nation since 1784. Since World War II, The Old Guard has served as the official Army Honor Guard and escort to the President. In that capacity, 3d Infantry soldiers are responsible for conducting military ceremonies at

Delaware County K9 Competition

Haverford Township

On April 23 , 2017 the third annual Delaware County K9 competition was held at the high school which was sponsored by Videon Dodge Lowes, and ACME Markets. Haverford Police K9 team of Officer Linker and Jango finished as the overall winner beating out 11 other teams. All four of Haverford K9 teams placed in every event and swept the obstacle course. During the event caterer Secret Sauce, owned by Steve Wilson, donated all the proceeds from the food sales to the Havertown Alliance for Drug Awareness. The proceeds from the T-Shirts sold during the event were also donated to HADA. The results from the event:

the White House, the Pentagon, national memorials and elsewhere in the nation's capital. In addition, soldiers of The Old Guard maintain a 24-hour vigil at the Tomb of the Unknowns and provide military funeral escorts at Arlington National Cemetery. The Haverford Township Police Honor Guard has served at funerals, parades, special events such as the annual Memorial Day services and has on numerous occasions presented the colors for the National Anthem at the Philadelphia Phillies games.

Haverford Township Bureau of Fire Firefighters are called to respond to all types of emergencies. Some responses are challenging, some adrenaline fueled, and others funny. Our volunteers leave their homes to respond at all hours of the day and night to be a part of The Haverford Township Bureau of Fire (HTBF). They provide emergency response for structure fires, gas leaks, hazardous materials spills, and vehicle rescue. We asked members, "Why do you continue to respond?" Andrew Coffey, age 26 Bon Air Fire Company, ten years of service "To help the community and to make sure the fire company has the proper staffing. It's fun!" Lindsay Baker, age 23 Llanerch Fire Company, two years of service "I live in this community and I want to continue to help it in any way I can. I enjoy the sense of family that comes with being a part of the HTBF. It's a responsibility that I signed up for and that I take seriously." Darin Garner, age 22 Llanerch Fire Company, five years of service "The feeling of camaraderie among the firefighters and a personal sense of duty. I have an internal need that I feel to help people." Liam McCullough, age 17 Llanerch Fire Company, one year of service "To help my community and to do something that I'm proud of that makes me a better person." It's exciting, never knowing when the pager is going to go off or what you're going to find when you pull up on a call." Haverford Alliance for Drug Awareness

Always call 9-1-1 for Emergencies and Non Emergencies

As you no doubt know, in virtually every community in the nation, large and small -- including Haverford Township -- young and old adults are dying from heroin (a cheaper drug to buy than marijuana!) and prescription opioids, which can lead to heroin addiction. The Haverford Alliance for Drug Awareness (HADA), is a grassroots organization formed to educate residents, destigamatize addiction, and to fight the onslaught of drug addiction problems. HADA holds regular meetings and is a wonderful resource for information and support. The Board of Commissioners recently formed a new Health and Welfare Committee, to help coordinate efforts with the HADA. Please send an email to havdrugalliance@gmail.com for more information on how to help or participate in upcoming events.

We all have been programmed to call 9-1-1 for what we consider to be emergency situations ONLY, whether that be fire, medical or crime related. That is no longer the case. Please call 9-1-1 for BOTH emergency and non-emergency situations, whether it's a cat stuck in a tree, a noise violation, ANY suspicious activity involving a car or individual, illegal parking, found pet, etc. All our 9-1-1 calls are received by the Delaware County Emergency Management Agency. They will in turn dispatch our paramedics, police and fire departments. Obviously our responders will give priority to the emergency situations first and if they are busy with true emergencies, it may take longer for them to respond to non-emergency situations, but be assured they will respond.

Home Improvement Information with your homeowners' insurance provider. To confirm that a contractor has updated their registration, please go to the Home Improvement Contractor Search http://hicsearch.attorneygeneral.gov/ provided by the Office of Attorney General.

Planning a home improvement project? Keep these things in mind: Contractor Licensing Home improvement contractors are required to be registered with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (HICPA). This registration requires minimum insurance coverage in the amount of $50,000 for personal injury and $50,000 for property damage. In the event that damages exceed this amount, your homeowner's insurance may be responsible to cover the difference. We recommend a minimum of $300,000.00 in coverage or to check

Pennsylvania does not have certification requirements or testing for general contractors (or their employees.) Plumbers and electricians are required to be licensed by Haverford Township, and must include proof of master license certification.

Building permit applications which propose the construction or replacement of any structure (including fences) must include a site plan of the property. Sheds, garages, decks, additions, or any other expansion of building or impenetrable surface must include a site plan and building calculation worksheet. If you are unsure of the size of your property, your deed will provide the most accurate information. Insurance Notice

An Important Announcement from Haverford Township Sewer backups and flooding can cause devastating property damage and are not covered by standard homeowners' insurance policies. The majority of these claims are the responsibility of the property owner. Sewage from sanitary sewer lines occasionally back up into houses through drain pipes. These backups not only cause extensive water damage that is difficult and expensive to repair, but also create health hazards.

Haverford Township is not responsible for damages caused by sewers, drains and sump pumps except under limited/special circumstances provided by the PA Municipal Immunity laws. Township residents must be aware that they should review their homeowner's, flood and sewer backup insurance coverage with their agent/insurance companies in order to properly protect their personal residence - probably the most valuable tangible asset that we all have. Article I, Section 149-3, subsection C (2) Sewer Service Regulations of the Township Code states that all sewer service laterals from the Township's sewer, regardless of location, are the property of the customer and/or owner and shall be maintained by him in good condition and repair.

Please pay particular attention to the following coverages: Coverage for Sewers, Drains and Sump Pumps: This valuable coverage is not included under your standard homeowner's policy but can be purchased by endorsement for an additional premium.

Flood Coverage: Flood coverage is not included under your homeowner's policy. However, flood insurance is available under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and can be obtained through your insurance agent or broker.

Environmental News Ask for a Free Rain Garden

Haverford residents and businesses can request a free rain garden (some owner's sweat equity required) to help "slow the flow", improve stream water quality and reduce flooding. The Haverford Environmental Advisory Committee's (EAC) "100 Rain Gardens in 10 Years Initiative" has selected another five spring rain gardens for residents who reached out and contribute a little sweat equity - but there is still time to be considered for the five in the fall! You can see rain gardens at Haverford Reserve, Merwood Park, Paddock Park, Oakmont Parking Lot, Nitre Hall, and twenty homes across the township.

What is a Rain Garden?

Beautiful landscaped areas built down, instead of up, intercepting runoff from buildings, driveways and other impervious surfaces before it can reach the storm sewers and streams. Small gardens are typically 6-12 inches deep and drain within a day or two after a rain. Plants are water and drought tolerant and need little or no watering after they are established. Environmental News Why Are Trees Valuable to You?

unity and cohesion with their neighbors, and feel safer than residents who have few trees around them. The presence of trees in a suburban landscape significantly reduced the cruising speed of drivers by an average of three miles per hour. Faster drivers and slower drivers both drove slower with trees.

Trees have positive effects on people. Trees are the ultimate "multi-taskers" and one of the most cost-effective tools for personal and neighborhood well-being. Trees cool air temperatures, clean air, reduce ozone, capture storm water, reduce energy costs, contribute economic benefits, provide habitat for wildlife, and much more.

Trees significantly increase your property value. Studies show that mature trees in a well-landscaped yard can increase the value of a house by 7% to 19%. Amenity and comfort ratings were about 80% higher for a tree-lined sidewalk compared with those for a non-shaded street.

Visual exposure to settings with trees helps recovery from stress within five minutes, as indicated by changes in blood pressure and muscle tension. Trees in the landscape have been shown to improve the performance of children with ADHD and improve girls' success.

Trees help control the negative effects of storm water (a problem for places like Haverford Township.) Leafy tree canopies catch precipitation before it reaches the

ground, allowing some of it to gently drip and the rest to be stored or evaporate. A mature tree can store 50 to 100 gallons of water during large storms.

Trees help you breathe better. Trees filter airborne pollutants and reduce the conditions that cause asthma and other respiratory problems. Researchers from Columbia University found childhood asthma rates were highest in parts of the city where tree density was lowest, controlling for all other factors. One of the important ways that Haverford Township shows that it values trees is through the Shade Tree Commission, who work to advise the Commissioners on all matters related to trees. The Commission meets on the last Monday of every month at 7:30 p.m. and welcomes community participation.

Trees save you money on energy costs. Trees keep your house cool in summer. The cooling effect of a young, healthy tree is equivalent to 10 room-size air conditioners operating 20 hours a day. Trees can also keep your house warmer in winter. Good tree windbreaks can save up to 25% on winter heating costs.

Trees make your neighborhood safer. Research shows that apartment buildings with medium to high levels of greenery had 42% to 52% fewer crimes than those without any trees. People report a stronger feeling of 24
