Hello Neighbors, Hopefully, you had a safe, enjoyable summer and are looking forward to the many fun fall events coming up in Haverford Township. Haverford Township Day, which takes place this year on Saturday, October 6, is sure to be a great day to enjoy with family, friends and neighbors. This year's theme is “A Compassionate Community,” and it centers on the everyday acts of kindness and self-sacrificing experiences that stitch each of us together throughout our Township. The entertainment includes a zip line, magic show, bands, Haverford High School orchestra, and children's rides. th

On October 13 and 14 from noon to 9:30 p.m., Kelly Music for Life is hosting an Italian Festival. The event will be held at Cardinal John Foley School located at 300 E Eagle Rd, Havertown.
A blood drive will be hosted at the CREC on Thursday, October 11th from 1 to 6 p.m. Appointments are preferred, but walk-ins are welcome. Register at www.redcrossblood.org and use sponsor code “CREC” to select your spot. Blood pressure screenings sponsored by Main Line Health will also be held in the CREC lobby the first Monday of every month from 9-11 a.m. Upcoming dates are October 1, November 5, and December 3. Lastly, to provide residents with the opportunity to observe as many meetings of its Boards and Commissions as possible, the Zoning Hearing Board and Planning Commission meetings are now broadcast live. Live meetings can be seen on Haverford Township's cable channels and are available immediately after their conclusion on our YouTube channel. Zoning
Hearing Board meetings are generally held on the first and third Thursday of each month at 7:45 p.m. with Planning Commission meetings on the second and fourth Thursday at 7:30 p.m., excluding holidays and a limited summer schedule. Meeting agendas may be found on our website at www.havertownship.org the Monday prior to the scheduled meeting date. Have a wonderful fall!

Haverford Township is governed by nine Township Commissioners who are elected by the residents of each of its nine wards. Commissioners elect their own President and Vice-President at the beginning of each year. The Commissioners appoint a Township Manager, who oversees all Township staff. Regular meetings of the Board of Commissioners are held the 2nd Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Commissioners Meeting Room, 1014 Darby Road, Havertown, PA. SEWER BACKUP AND FLOODING INSURANCE

AN IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT FROM HAVERFORD TOWNSHIP

Sewer backups and flooding can cause devastating property damage and are not covered by standard homeowners’ insurance policies. The majority of these claims are the responsibility of the property owner. Sewage from sanitary sewer lines occasionally back up into houses through drain pipes. These backups not only cause extensive water damage that is difficult and expensive to repair, but also create health hazards.
Haverford Township is not responsible for damages caused by sewers, drains and sump pumps except under limited/special circumstances provided by the PA Municipal Immunity laws. Township residents must be aware that they should review their homeowner’s, flood and sewer backup insurance coverage with their agent/insurance company in order to properly protect their personal residences—probably the most valuable tangible asset that we all have. Article I, Section 149-3, subsection C (2), Sewer Service Regulations of the Township Code states that all sewer service laterals from the Township’s sewer, regardless of location, are the property of the customer and/or owner and shall be maintained by him in good condition and repair. Please pay particular attention to the following coverages: Coverage for Sewers, Drains and Sump Pumps: This valuable coverage is not included under your standard homeowner's policy but can be purchased by endorsement for an additional premium. Flood Coverage: Flood coverage is not included under your homeowner’s policy. However, flood insurance is available under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and can be obtained through your insurance agent or broker.
The Township does not provide flood insurance.

Back To School Traffic Safety School Buses & Traffic Safety With a new school year underway, motorists are reminded to be vigilant of school children and school buses. Here are some important safety tips when sharing the road with school buses:
3 Be alert. Children walking to or from their bus are usually very comfortable with their surroundings. This makes them more likely to take risks, ignore hazards or fail to look both ways when crossing the street.
until the school children who may have alighted from the school bus have reached a place of safety. The driver of a vehicle approaching an intersection at which a school bus is stopped shall stop his vehicle at that intersection until the flashing red signal lights are no longer actuated.
3 Never pass a school bus on the right. It is illegal and could have tragic consequences.
(g) EXCEPTIONS FROM STOPPING REQUIREMENTS. The driver of a vehicle upon a highway or trafficway with separate roadways need not stop upon meeting or passing a school bus with actuated red signal lights which is on a different roadway.
3 It is illegal to pass a school bus that is stopped to load or unload children. 3 School buses use yellow flashing lights to alert motorists that they are preparing to stop to load or unload children. Red flashing lights and an extended stop sign arm signals to motorists that the bus is stopped and children are getting on or off the bus. 3 Pennsylvania law requires that traffic in both directions stop on undivided roadways when students are entering or exiting a school bus. 3 Traffic behind the school bus (traveling in the same direction) must stop. 3 The area 10 feet around a school bus is where children are in the most danger of being hit. 3 Stop your car far enough from the bus to allow children the necessary space to safely enter and exit the bus.
The Pennsylvania Vehicle Code provides strict penalties for drivers who fail to obey speed limits in school zones and stopped school buses. The Vehicle Code reads in part: 3345. Meeting or overtaking school bus. (a) DUTY OF APPROACHING DRIVER WHEN RED SIGNALS ARE FLASHING. Except as provided in subsection (g), the driver of a vehicle meeting or overtaking any school bus stopped on a highway or trafficway shall stop at least ten feet before reaching the school bus when the red signal lights on the school bus are flashing and the side stop signal arms are activated under section 4552(b.1) (relating to general requirements for school buses). The driver shall not proceed until the flashing red signal lights are no longer actuated. In no event shall a driver of a vehicle resume motion of the vehicle
(j) PENALTY. A person who violates subsection (a) commits a summary offense and shall, upon conviction, be sentenced to pay a fine of $ 250 AND receive 5 points on their license. 3365. Special speed limitations. (b) SCHOOL ZONES. When passing through a school zone as defined and established under regulations of the department, no person shall drive a vehicle at a speed greater than 15 miles per hour. An official traffic-control device shall indicate the beginning and end of each school zone to traffic approaching in each direction. Establishment of a school zone, including its location and hours of operation, shall be approved by the department. (d) PENALTY. i) For a violation of subsection (b), a fine of not more than $ 500 if the person exceeds the maximum speed limit by more than 11 miles per hour AND receive 5 points on their license.

Environmental Update we need to do to merely keep at least as many trees in the Township as there were in the previous year.
Why Being a Tree City is Important to Haverford
There are many important reasons to at least maintain and even increase our tree canopy. Trees are important to municipal health. For example, 100 large mature trees intercept 204,000 gallons of rainfall per year, reducing the need for stormwater controls, and providing cleaner water. The cost benefit of trees is very simple. As Tree City notes: Haverford has once again been able to achieve the status of a Tree City USA, one of 3,400 communities across the country to meet Tree City standards. You are already a proud resident of Haverford Township; why should you care about The Tree City USA program? Most of us believe trees are an important part of our environment, but we don't think much about how our community maintains its tree canopy. We know trees add important value to any property and potentially increase property values from 720%; but, do we consider how every tree that is lost, for whatever reason, impacts to our whole environment? Because managing the tree environment is a complex process, the Township has made an important step toward creating a community vision by being a Tree City USA because the program provides a framework "to manage and expand" public trees. Tree City USA requires communities to meet four core standards of sound urban forestry management: maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and celebrating Arbor Day. These standards are the bare bones of what

For 100 trees over 40 years, the costs of planting and maintaining the tree and area around is $89,000. The benefits those trees provide in terms of energy conservation, air and water quality, as well as real estate value, is $161,000 for a payoff of $72,000. And at the end of 40 years those trees are still working for you! Trees are one of the few assets that don't depreciate. To be a Tree City, the community needs an active Tree Board. Haverford has a Shade Tree Commission, a voice for trees in Haverford, which has a number of duties including making recommendations and providing advice to the Township about: the planting, removal, maintenance, care and protection of shade trees in the public streets, highways and public parks; preventing the spread of disease which may injure or destroy shade trees; and the treeplanting program. Most important to you, as a citizen, is that the Commission may receive and investigate citizen inquiries concerning shade trees and make recommendations pursuant to them. The Shade Tree Commission meets the last Monday of each month at 7:30 in the Township Building. Join us and make your support for trees known. What is Impervious Surface? Impervious Surface- A surface that prevents the infiltration of water into the ground. Impervious surfaces include, but are not limited to, streets, sidewalks, pavements, driveway areas, or roofs. Any surface areas designed to be gravel or crushed stone shall be regarded as impervious surfaces. Impervious surfaces reduce the amount of rainwater that can be absorbed into the ground. When there is less ground for water to penetrate, it can quickly flow directly into stormsewers and creeks, increasing the likelihood of more frequent and more severe flooding. Additionally, pollutants are unable to penetrate an impervious surface. Rainfall may carry these pollutants directly into our waterways resulting in water that is unfit for wildlife or recreational activities. Water runoff from an acre of paved surface is approximately ten to twenty times greater than an acre of grass. Materials such as crushed stone, porous concrete, and pervious pavers can provide various amounts of infiltration but are not considered 100% pervious. To minimize the impact of water runoff, impervious surface coverage is limited to a maximum percentage per property, which varies by zoning district. Any additional increase of concrete, brick, asphalt, etc. on a property requires a building permit prior to construction. Studies have shown that sharper knives are actually safer than dull ones. Sharper knives cut more efficiently, so they lower your risk for injury by reducing the number of cuts you have to make during the preparation process. You also apply less force with sharper knives, which means that what you're cutting is less likely to move and expose your finger to the blade instead. Other blades around the house, like those found in blenders and garbage disposals, can cause significant injuries and even amputations in a blink of an eye. The American Cancer Society (ACS) released new recommendations for colorectal cancer screening guidelines, including the age screenings should begin for colorectal cancer. Previously, the screening age for a person at average risk was 50. The new guidelines have reduced that age to 45. “By lowering the screening age, our goal is to detect colorectal cancer earlier in patients who are at an increased risk for the disease,” explains John Marks, MD, chief of colorectal surgery at Main Line Health. “Even with advances in detection and treatment, colorectal cancer is the number one abdominal malignancy that affects both men and women. Roughly one in 20 Americans will develop this cancer, and the tragedy is that it is entirely preventable by getting a colonoscopy.” 30

Last year, the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that colon cancer rates increased from one percent to 2.4 percent annually since the mid-1980s among adults age 20 - 39. For the 39 years encompassed in the study, rectal cancer rates grew 3.2 percent annually for adults age 20 - 39.

“Colon and rectal cancer have, historically, affected older men and women. But the most recent research shows an increase in the number of adults in their twenties and thirties who are being diagnosed with these cancers, particularly rectal cancer, and this requires doctors and patients to sit up and take notice,” says Dr. Marks.

What about people with a high risk of colorectal cancer? If you're already at an increased risk for colorectal cancer as a result of your lifestyle or family history, you may need to begin screenings at an earlier age. Talk to your health care provider about your risk factors and what age you should begin screenings. People who are at high or increased risk for colorectal cancer can include those with: A family or personal history of colon or rectal cancer or colorectal polyps. A family or personal history of other cancers: ovarian, uterine, gastric and breast. A history of inflammatory bowel disease. A personal history of radiation to the abdomen or pelvic area as a result of cancer treatment. Your options for colorectal cancer screening The ACS' new guidelines also issue recommendations about
