Ardmore Avenue Bridge Replacement Project On April 10, the Township hosted an informational session for PennDot to make themselves available to our residents regarding the Ardmore Avenue bridge replacement project. The presentation and Q&A session that followed brought up several concerns shared by both residents and Township officials on traffic rd th th patterns and detours. 3 , 4 , 5 and th 6 Ward Commissioners Kevin McCloskey, Dan Siegel, Andy Lewis and Larry Holmes, who were in attendance plus any residents who wished to speak were given the opportunity to ask questions directly to PennDot representatives. This project will replace the bridges spanning both Cobbs Creek and the SEPTA Norristown High-Speed Route

100 line. Additionally, the project will include a complete reconstruction of the roadway between Golf House and Haverford Roads to accommodate two shoulders and two travel lanes. Sight distance will also be improved for motorists traveling over the bridge over SEPTA, allowing better visibility of oncoming traffic. Tree removal and aerial utility relocation efforts began March 25. Once Ardmore Avenue is closed between Darby and Haverford Roads, contractors will have 338 days to open the new bridge and remove detours. Significant monetary damages will be assessed against the contractor for each day the detour remains in place after the 338th day. The PennDot plan calls for motorists to be detoured over Haverford Road, College Ave and Darby Road. A temporary pedestrian bridge will be installed at the Ardmore Avenue Station for access to the platforms of the Hi-Speed Line and parking at the Ardmore Avenue Station will be accessed thru Golf View Road. The Police Department will increase enforcement in the area and traffic violations will be strictly enforced. The police want to remind drivers

that they should obey all traffic laws, be courteous and to expect delays. They will also be monitoring traffic and will work diligently to improve on any major delays and choke points. Haverford Township is governed by nine Township Commissioners who are elected by the residents of each of its nine wards. Commissioners elect their own President and Vice-President at the beginning of each year. The Commissioners appoint a Township Manager, who oversees all Township staff. Regular meetings of the Board of Commissioners are held the 2nd Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Commissioners Meeting Room, 1014 Darby Road, Havertown, PA. Dear Resident: It's mid-April and, although my first official day is still a few weeks away, I write this message as the newly appointed Manager of Haverford Township. It will be my honor to serve this great community.
There will be challenges along the way, and I am confident that my experience will help us work through them. I come to Haverford with nearly twenty years of professional growth in the public sector, including more than ten years in the field of municipal management. I offer a solid background in government finance and hands-on experience as a township manager, having served communities in Montgomery and
Chester Counties. I hold both a bachelor's degree and a master's degree from Temple University and I am committed to the principles of community service, professional local government management, and the highest standards of integrity. Most importantly, I truly care about people, the residents I serve, the business and visitors to our community, the Commissioners, and my coworkers. Spring has been called the “Season of New Beginnings”, so it is fitting that I come to Haverford at this time of year. I am fortunate to be joining a well-oiled machine, with an opportunity to make improvements, where necessary. I look forward with excitement to my first day in Haverford, and to becoming a part of this great community. It will be my mission, and that of the entire organization, to continue providing the level of service you are accustomed to receiving, and to protecting the health, safety, and welfare of Haverford Township.

Haverford, PA, was named a 2018 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. Havertown achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program's four requirements: a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation. Development Projects Haverford Road, has been approved to demolish the existing veterinary office and construct a new 2,773 square foot office with 25 parking spaces in its place. The following projects have been proposed, approved, or are under construction in Haverford Township. The Haverford Township School District has begun to construct a new Lynnewood Elementary School on the same property as the existing school with new athletic fields, parking area, and playground. The old school will be razed at the completion of construction. Pets First Veterinary Center, located at 924
Republic Bank has been approved by the Board of Commissioners to construct a 3,028 square foot bank building with twenty-two off-street parking spaces, and other associated site improvements at 2400 Darby Road (currently Sharro Gas Station.) Bryn Mawr Medical Specialists Association has been approved to develop the property located at 986 & 996 E. Railroad Avenue with a three story, approximately 20,439 gross square foot medical office building, with sixty-five parking spaces, and other associated site improvements.
The following properties have received subdivision approval: 1200 Ellston Road- The existing house will remain and a single-family dwelling will be built on the new 6,154 square foot parcel. 1417 Fairview Road- The property has been subdivided into two lots containing 25,500 square feet, and 16,500 square feet, respectively. A new single-family house will be constructed on each lot, and the existing home will be demolished. 217 Walnut Hill Lane- A 14,750 square foot lot has been created for a new single family dwelling. The existing house will remain.

SEWER BACKUP AND FLOODING INSURANCE

An Important Announcement from Haverford Township
!
Sewer backups and flooding can cause devastating property damage and are not covered by standard homeowners’ insurance policies. The majority of these claims are the responsibility of the property owner. Sewage from sanitary sewer lines occasionally back up into houses through drain pipes. These backups not only cause extensive water damage that is difficult and expensive to repair, but also create health hazards.
Haverford Township is not responsible for damages caused by sewers, drains and sump pumps except under limited/special circumstances provided by the PA Municipal Immunity laws. Township residents must be aware that they should review their homeowner’s, flood and sewer backup insurance coverage with their agent/insurance company in order to properly protect their personal residences—probably the most valuable tangible asset that we all have. Article I, Section 149-3, subsection C (2), Sewer Service Regulations of the Township Code states that all sewer service laterals from the Township’s sewer, regardless of location, are the property of the customer and/or owner and shall be maintained by him in good condition and repair. Please pay particular attention to the following coverages: Coverage for Sewers, Drains and Sump Pumps: This valuable coverage is not included under your standard homeowner's policy but can be purchased by endorsement for an additional premium. Flood Coverage: Flood coverage is not included under your homeowner’s policy. However, flood insurance is available under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and can be obtained through your insurance agent or broker.

Environmental Update Haverford Township Department of Parks and Recreation Sustainability Initiative. Ban the Bottle Haverford Township Department of Parks and Recreation is launching a Ban the Bottle initiative at our day camps and playgrounds this summer by urging our participants to bring reusable bottles each day. This will educate our campers on environmental issues and stewardship, while also greatly impacting Haverford's production of waste, beautifying our parks, and strengthening our efforts to recycle more efficiently. Ban the Bottle will be an easy first step in bringing our community toward Zero Waste. Plastic water bottles consume an enormous amount of energy to produce, package, and transport. We spend over $11 billion per year on bottled water. Globally, it is estimated that more than 500 billion plastic bottles are produced each year, but only 14 percent are recycled. The rest are landfilled, burned or discarded in our environment. It is a staggering and depressing amount of waste that could have been reduced and re-used.
The Beginnings of Plastic and Throwaway Living
In August 1955, Life Magazine revealed a cover story entitled “Throwaway Living.” Inside this article the term "throw-away society" was coined to describe the new trend of plastic products that promised to minimize the time housewives spent accomplishing their daily chores. Why spend valuable time washing and reusing household objects like plates and silverware when they can be inexpensively made of plastic and disposed of after use?
This launched a plastic revolution that quickly infiltrated every part of our day-today lives. In the last fifty plus years we have seen an explosion of products created with a one-use life span. Ironically enough, these single use products are manufactured from plastic, a material made to last thousands of years. It is estimated that today the average American throws away approximately 185 pounds of plastic per year. This accounts for 10 percent of the total waste we generate. Not to mention 75 percent of this plastic

waste goes directly to landfills, where it will not decompose for 500-1,000 years.
The Current Recycling Crisis
On March 1, 2018, China followed through with its threat to prohibit the import of U.S. plastics, mixed paper and other materials. For years, the US relied on China to take 40 percent of its recyclables for processing and manufacturing. Now, thousands of tons of materials that would have been recycled are going into landfills instead. Some municipalities have stopped collecting items that used to be recycled and others have been stockpiling them to combat this crisis. In Philadelphia, for example, the city can no longer keep up with both the volume and the contaminated condition of recyclable waste. As a result, about 200 tons of recycling material is sent to the huge Covanta incinerator in Chester City each day. The burning of trash releases a host of pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxides and particulate matter, which are tiny fragments of debris that, once inhaled, cause an array of health problems. In addition to landfills, a large portion of plastic waste ends up in our oceans and waterways. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, also known as the Pacific Trash Vortex, is a collection of marine debris in the North Pacific Ocean that amounts to approximately twice the size of Texas. Further, plastic is often mistaken for food by sea animals and has been found in the stomachs of more than 60% of all seabirds and in 100% of sea turtle species. When an animal ingests plastic, it can cause life-threatening problems, including reduced fitness, nutrient uptake and feeding efficiency.

What are the key benefits? Climate Impact
Extracting raw materials from natural spaces requires large amounts of energy and causes pollution, whether it is logging a forest, mining for minerals or drilling for oil. Processing these materials requires more energy and causes more pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Once they're used, the goods are simply dumped in a landfill or destroyed in an incinerator. In contrast, a Zero Waste approach conserves natural resources and reduces pollution from extraction, manufacturing and disposal. Reducing and reusing means fewer products are made, as people buy less and as products are made to last.
Save Money
Zero Waste builds a circular economy where one person's “waste” is a resource for something new. This greatly reduces the cost of having to buy continuous disposable materials for single-use such as like plastic water bottles, paper lunch bags, and plastic utensils.
Build Community
Zero Waste starts at home and finds its way through various sectors of the community. Community projects focused on re-use help redistribute useful goods to those in need, from leftover food donated to shelters, to furniture for refugees, to business clothing for those entering the job market. Communitybased zero waste strategies like composting at a community garden, tool sharing and skills sharing to reuse and repair, build capacity to reduce waste and costs.

At the root of these complex issues is a simple change in habit. We need to reduce waste at the source itself. If we are more conscious about what we buy and use in our day to day lives, we can stop the chain of waste and litter before it even happens. That is why we are urging our community to consider adopting Zero Waste practices. Many communities across the country have already pledged to work toward a Zero Waste Plan or Resolution. Some examples include Oakland CA, NYC, and even Philadelphia. Zero Waste is about guiding people in changing their lifestyles and practices to match sustainable natural cycles which encourage waste prevention, reusing, recycling and composting the materials we typically dispose. This will promote clean production, prevent pollution, and create

A Zero Waste approach ultimately protects the health of communities by reducing pollution in the air, water and soil by keeping toxics and waste out of landfills and incinerators.
The benefit of being waste conscious and reducing harmful impacts on our environment is beyond calculation. As residents of Haverford Township, it is our responsibility to keep our open spaces clean and beautiful for generations to come. The Parks and Recreation Department's Ban the Bottle Initiative is the first step toward a more sustainable future.

Summer Safety Tips Take the BITE Out of Summer - Safely! Your greatest water safety assurance comes from adopting and practicing as many safety steps as possible. Adding an extra safety step around the water can make all the difference. You can never know which safety step will save a life until it does. Stay Close, Be Alert and Watch Always watch your children and never leave them unattended Keep children away from pool drains, pipes and other openings Have a phone close by at all times If a child is missing, check the pool first Share safety instructions with family, friends and neighbors
Learn and Practice Water Safety Skills Learn to swim; it's fun and good exercise Know how to perform CPR on children and adults Understand the basics of life saving so that you can assist in a pool emergency
We don't have Zika (yet), but now is the time Mosquitoes that cause West Nile Virus can breed in standing water as small as a bottle cap. Eliminating standing water breeding sites at home is the best long-term, environmentally friendly solution. Where standing water can't be eliminated, placing Bti "dunks" (available at hardware stores) in standing water pools is an environmentally friendly way to prevent mosquito growth. Keep grass clippings out of the streets that wash into storm sewers and provide a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Search "West Nile Virus Earth Friendly Tips" for EAC info on how you can FIGHT THE BITE! Check for standing water at these spots at least once a week, especially after rainfall: Birdbaths · pet water dishes · saucers under flowerpots (empty regularly or fill with sand) · open garbage cans · toys or other materials left outdoors · sheets of plastic, tarps and Jacuzzi covers · gutters clogged with debris or not graded for proper drainage · old tires (take to tire shop to be recycled or drill drainage holes) · litter (eggs can hatch in a pool as small as a bottle cap!) · holes where trees have been removed (fill with soil or turn into a rain garden) · lawn or landscaping depressions · floating debris in ponds · ornamental pools (stock with fish or aerate) · swimming pools (maintain proper chorine levels year round & make sure filter is operating from May through October)
To avoid being bitten: Wear light colored clothing, and long sleeves & pants when possible. Repair tears in window screens to keep mosquitoes from sneaking into your home. Stay indoors at sunrise, sunset and early evening when mosquitoes are most active. Use yellow "bug" lights outdoors - they attract fewer mosquitoes (but they are NOT repellents) Carefully use insect repellent effective for mosquitoes with the active ingredients DEET (N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide), DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide), Picaridin (KBR 3023), or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus [active ingredient: p-menthane 3,8-diol (PMD)] following instructions. Kelly Music for Life is rolling out all things green to once again celebrate all things Irish in the “33rd County of Ireland”, Havertown PA, for the 3rd Annual Havertown Irish Festival sponsored by ACME Markets. On Saturday, June 22nd Noon to 9pm the Havertown Irish Festival kicks off with a wonderful example of the contributions the Irish have made to the Havertown area: a procession of local dignitaries and township residents, led by the 2019 Grand Marshal John Stretch of Stretch Funeral Homes and the Philadelphia Emerald Society Pipe Band, leading to a joyful day of traditional music and dance, Irish treats and great brews at Kelly's Pub. There will be a Super Fun Zone for the wee little ones too! The Irish have lived in the Havertown community since at least the early 1800's. St. Denis, a parish in Haverford Township was founded in 1825 by an early Irish Immigrant, Denis Kelly from the Finn Valley in County Donegal. Mr. Kelly attracted many fellow Irish through out the mid-1800's to our area as refuge from The Great Starvation occurring in their homeland. He gave them jobs in the mills that he owned that once lined Cobbs Creek. 18

Center stage at the Havertown Irish Festival will present both traditional and modern Irish sounds that will have you singing and dancing all day. The list of performers includes: Scott McClatchy Band John Byrne Band Poehemia Dylan McGuire Band Shades of Green Brian Boru Pipes and Drums Marissa Berry (Philadelphia Mary) Philadelphia Emerald Society Pipe Band Irish Dancers and more performers to be announced. There will be all types of traditional and delicious food and treats from area restaurants, chefs and bakers, including the great merchants of the Manoa Shopping Center. Proceeds from the event will support The Kelly Center for Music, Arts and Community scheduled to open this Spring in Havertown. Step in and enjoy a fine Irish brew and plenty of Irish laughter at the return of KELLY'S PUB. Irish associations, guilds, and clubs will present their areas of expertise and celebrate the unique Irish culture, legends, and traditions handed down through generations and still vibrant today. Area businesses will spotlight their services, local artisans and craftspeople will be offering their unique Irish themed items for sale, and so much more. The 9th Annual Haverford Music Festival (HMF), presented by ACME Markets, takes place on Saturday, September 7th. Featuring live music from 30 national, regional and local performers, this family-oriented event will run from noon to 9:30 p.m. on four stages near the intersection of Eagle and Darby Roads in Havertown. Area businesses and food vendors will fill booths along Darby Road and Hathaway Lane. There will also be two beer gardens, a moon bounce and playground for the kids, and much more fun. Admission is free; voluntary donations will be accepted at the gates. The Haverford Music Festival is a family music festival that strengthens the cultural identity of Haverford Township, serves as the primary fundraiser for the Haverford Township Civic Council (HTCC), and provides funding for projects that enhance the quality of life in Haverford Township.

Havertown Harvest is a free-admission event from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and feature music, art, crafters, children's activities as well as food concessions and a beer/wine/hot cider garden for adults. We envision an event that primarily features local artisans and crafters along with children's activities. In the music area we will feature prerecorded music, local musicians with scheduled performers and an “open mic” program giving local artists an opportunity to perform in an intimate outdoor setting with sing-alongs and other entertaining and engaging performances in an outdoor setting. Parks and Recreation Update Township Park Upgrades Planned
In November, the Board of Commissioners approved a Capital Bond, which included $2.5 million to upgrade the Township parks. This investment in our future is the first stage of a five-year plan, with additional funds to be allocated in 2-3 years. This is the largest allocation for local parks in the Township history and will impact the next 15-20 years. These funds will be used for nicer trashcans, re-paving pathways, new fencing, court resurfacing, regrading ball fields, benches, signs, energy efficient lights and playground equipment. You will see some of the work and upgrades at parks beginning this summer.

EAGLES MERE—SUMMER CAMP FOR ADULTS Imagine waking to fresh cool air, sounds of owls hooting, woodpeckers drilling, and wandering with a steaming latté to the lake's edge to see eagles fishing on Pennsylvania's second highest natural glacial lake. What could be a more inviting way to begin the day, every day? Your kids left the house 30 minutes ago on their bicycles to join in at “Sports Week” at the beach. Today you have a choice - sneak away and get some needed personal time, catch up on your reading, play golf….whatever…the kids are safe and engaged all day in the athletic program, prowling the woods as part of the guided outdoor conservation program, taking tennis and golf lessons, or just hanging out with friends. Cars and traffic are hardly an issue. Lunch is available indoors or out at the beach, the Country Store, or the Sweet Shop. Everyone is friendly. Life feels like a throwback to the 50's and 60's, a less pressured time. Is this summer camp for the kids or for the adults? Eagles Mere, Pennsylvania is unique. It is a 2 ½ hour drive from Philadelphia, deep in the Endless Mountain region of Pennsylvania. Founded in the mid 1800's as Philadelphia's “East Hampton”, it is rich in history. It is on the National Historic Register and virtually all of the gorgeous original architecture remains. It is home to
a William Flynn designed “links” course (think Marion), boundless preserved woodlands and trails, organized mountain and road biking, hiking, canoeing and sailing, tennis, croquet, summer arts, antique, and craft shows, shopping, museums galore, and more recently a revived Chautauqua. Engage as little or as much as you desire. Famous artists make it their home. The town boasts three Olympic Gold medal winners. There are noted authors and photographers. There is something for everyone. The town's one remaining historic hotel is the Eagles Mere Inn (1887), seventeen rooms and three unique restaurants (www.eaglesmereinn.com). Eagles Mere Historic Village Inc. is a 501C3 organized to preserve the downtown and its website provides good insight into the town (www.eaglesmerehistoricvillage.com).
