REDUCING PLASTIC WASTE On Monday, April 11, Haverford Township’s Board of Commissioners passed the plastic pollution reduction ordinance with a minor amendment. The ordinance will go into effect January 2, 2023. This bill prohibits commercial establishments from providing single-use plastic bags and single-use plastic stirrers. Exemptions include: Product bags; newspaper bags; bags sold in packages containing multiple bags intended for use as food storage bags, garbage bags, or pet waste bags; or laundry or dry-cleaner bags. Commercial establishments will charge a minimum of 10 cents for compliant bags (paper or re-useable) - the fee will go to the commercial
establishment. A restaurant establishment may opt out of the compliant bag fee for food takeout and deliveries. Additionally, the ordinance states that no commercial establishment shall provide to any customer a single-use plastic straw unless a customer first requests it. All food service establishments shall maintain a sufficient supply of single-use plastic straws to accommodate any such request. Composting Workshops
If you've ever walked the trails at Valley Forge National Historical Park, you've no doubt noticed a striking historical building sitting empty and quiet on the Grand Parade. That's the Maurice Stephens House, built in 1816 on the site where Brigadier General Jedediah Huntington was encamped with his troops during the winter encampment of 1777-1778. Used over the years as a home, a farm, ranger dormitories, park offices, and even a nature center, the house has been vacant since the mid-1990s. The Valley Forge Park Alliance (VFPA) is about to change all that, and is preparing to turn the house into a much-needed gathering spot and café, as well as the new headquarters of the VFPA. Trail users and history buffs alike can rejoice! The historic building will receive sorelyneeded repairs to bring it back to life and share the Valley Forge story through exhibits and programs. Visitors who find themselves thirsty on the trails will now have a place to refresh themselves along the way. And it won't be just any old café: it will be operated by 10

Learning, Exploring, Celebrating and Connecting: The Softer Side of the Willows Mansion Restoration

A holiday open house with hot chocolate, snacks, a kids' craft and socializing around a fire pit in the courtyard.
The fascinating history of the Willows Mansion, located in the Willows Park in Radnor Township, and the unflagging efforts of the Willows Park Preserve (WPP) to restore the long-shuttered building to its former grandeur, have already been described in these pages (see The Radnor News, Winter 2022). The bricks and mortar restoration of the Mansion is exciting news, but equally exciting is the “software upgrade” taking place at this much-revered landmark: creating community connections by offering a wide range of programs, lectures, workshops, performances and other events that can be enjoyed by community members of all ages.
Coming on April 24th of this year is the debut of what the WPP hopes will be an annual event at the Mansion: Wellness at the Willows, a free, day-long event featuring, among other things, classes on yoga, mindfulness, stretching and exercise; lectures and demonstrations on healthy eating; a presentation by the Rodale Institute on the soil/human connection; a talk by Penn Medicine about promoting a healthy body image; a tour of Skunk Hollow Community Garden with pointers on growing your own vegetables; a restorative hike along the Skunk Hollow trails; a “bar-less barre” class; and display tables offering information on a variety of health and wellness matters.
A series of virtual presentations on the stories “behind the walls” of several local historical homes, including Chanticleer, Launfal (now the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur), Woodcrest (now Cabrini University) and, of course, the Willows Mansion.
In addition to the Wellness at the Willows event, WPP plans to present additional virtual presentations and live classes, workshops and events on various topics in the coming months, as well as seasonal and holiday-related events. What about weddings, graduation parties and other private events like those held at the Willows Mansion for so many years before it was shuttered? Don't worry private events, from glamourous birthday parties to dignified celebrations of life are back again, now with increased outdoor tented space on the Mansion's beautiful terraces overlooking the scenic park and pond. Forster's famous novel about human relationships, Howards End, consists of two words: Only connect. The WPP is all about creating community connections through learning, exploring, socializing, celebrating and sharing experiences at a grand old house, Radnor's home.
Consider the programs and events that the WPP has offered to date: A family-friendly, outdoor Concerts in the Courtyard series featuring talented local musicians offering a variety of musical experiences, including pop tunes, classic rock, chamber music and soft jazz. One of the more popular performances in this series last year featured the Radnor High School Orchestra which delighted the audience with a program entitled “Starry, Starry Night.” The popular concert series will continue this year, from April through October, with the return of several crowd favorites and some new.
Speaking of the monthly newsletter, in addition to listing upcoming programs and events it contains an update on renovation activities at the Mansion and an interesting “Did you Know?” item on the history of the Mansion. The newsletter also features an engaging and informative article on nature at the Willows. Past articles have described the birds who make their homes in the park, seasonally or year-round; the fish and amphibians that live in the Willows Pond; the native trees and wildflowers that grow in the park; and other natural phenomena that can be observed around the Mansion. Readers of past issues now know the state tree and state fish of Pennsylvania (Eastern hemlock and brook trout); how fish, frogs and turtles survive in an ice-covered pond (torpor and brumation); which tree at the Willows has “knees” (bald cypress); how to handle a snapping turtle (Don't!); and how the dandelion got its name (from the French “dent de lion” - tooth of the lion). Eating to reduce your breast cancer risk.
You likely know that what you eat can impact your risk for health issues like heart disease or stroke, but did you know that diet can also impact your cancer risk? “No cancer is completely cured or caused by your diet,” says Robin Ciocca, DO, breast cancer surgeon at Main Line Health. “That being said, there is absolutely a benefit to good nutrition and healthy eating in managing that cancer risk. Unlike our family history, gender, race or genetics, our diet is a cancer risk factor that's within our control to manage or change.” And while there's no specific diet that has been tied to reducing breast cancer risk, studies have shown that making a few changes to what and how we eat have the potential to make a difference in lifetime breast cancer risk. Dr. Ciocca offers some advice for eating well to improve your breast - and overall - health.

Eat the right kind of fats.
While a high-fat diet hasn't been tied to breast cancer risk, there have been studies that examine how the type of fat you eat could impact your risk. All fat is not created equal. Just like fiber or protein, fat is a nutrient that is important for our body and it has a role in good nutrition. Instead of packaged, processed or fried foods, get your fat intake from sources like nuts, olives, tuna, salmon, avocado, or olive oil. These foods contain monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fat, which can actually help reduce plaque buildup in your arteries, improve cholesterol and reduce inflammation.
A staple of any healthy diet is lots of fruits, veggies and whole grains, and it's no surprise that eating a colorful array of produce can reduce your risk for several health issues and chronic diseases including breast cancer.
Limit alcoholic drinks to one per day.
Many studies have been conducted regarding the connection between alcohol and breast cancer risk, and all have found a similar result: The more alcoholic beverages you have per week, the higher your risk for breast and other cancers. This doesn't mean you have to completely give up drinking, but you should limit your daily alcohol intake to one drink per day. If you've gotten used to enjoying a fruity cocktail with dinner or relaxing with a glass of wine, ask yourself: Is it the beverage you're enjoying, or the ritual? Try mixing up a mocktail instead to satisfy your cocktail craving and begin substituting a 14

A healthy diet is important and one of the many modifiable risk factors for breast cancer. But the most important and effective way to manage your risk remains annual screenings. “An annual mammogram is the best way for us to detect and treat cancer early. It's very important for women to make their mammogram a priority every year,” says Dr. Ciocca. Women who are at a “normal” risk for breast cancer (no genetic mutations, no personal or family history, not of Ashkenazi Jewish descent) should begin getting annual mammograms by age 45. If you are at an increased risk for breast cancer either as a result of your personal or family history or genetics, talk to your primary care provider about when you should begin screenings. The importance of mammograms for managing breast cancer risk.
Pay attention to vitamin D intake.
While research has yet to show a direct link between vitamin D deficiency and breast cancer risk, several studies have indicated that there's a connection between the two. Get your vitamin D by spending time outside (sunshine is a great source of vitamin D!) and eating foods that include this nutrient, like juice, yogurt, milk and certain kinds of fish. Your Yard: Swap Noxious for Conscious Plants By Dan Lynch
Pennsylvania made headlines recently when The Commonwealth added several popular species to its list of noxious plants, and banned their propagation or sale throughout the state. Controlled Plant & Noxious Weed Lists (pa.gov) The list includes two ornamentals that have been favorites of homeowners, landscapers, and city governments for years: the Bradford (or Callery) Pear (Pyrus calleryana), and the Japanese barberry (Berberis thunbergii). Bradford Pears, with their showy white blooms, herald the coming of spring. However, they spread easily, their wood is soft and their branches often break, and their flowers emit a putrid odor. Japanese Barberries are no better. Luckily, many options exist for hardy, native plants that can restore ecological health to our neighborhoods.
In with the Conscious
There are many native species that support and sustain a healthy ecological balance. Once you plant an appropriate native species in its natural habitat, it will reward you with a lifetime of beauty, water filtration, and wildlife habitat. Let's say you have a Japanese barberry hedgerow in your front yard that was installed years ago, and now you'd like to make an upgrade. Here are some fantastic native options to consider: Eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis) works well in sunny, mesic locations with good drainage, and provides early spring blooms for pollinators and birds.
High bush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) are real, edible blueberries that will feed the birds and your family! Put them in a moist area, and make sure they get plenty of sun. You might want to consider acidifying your soil, too.
Out with the Noxious
While consumers can no longer buy these specific invasive species, other noxious plants still lurk on store shelves. Plants like Japanese pachysandra (Pachysandra terminalis) and Butterfly bushes (Buddlejadavidii) can proliferate throughout local ecosystems, but provide little to no sustenance for pollinators and wildlife. (Not one caterpillar eats the leaves of a butterfly bush, yet the bushes often crowd out native species. No caterpillars, no butterflies.) As homeowners, we can learn about the potential threat of invasive species in our landscapes, and opt for natives instead. Committing to more conscious practices can have an immediate, positive, compounding effect in our environmentwe just need to know what to plant.
Bush honeysuckle (Diervillasessilifolia) will give you a boom of pollinators with its fragrant flowers if you plant them in a moist, well-draining spot in the sun.
Spicebush (Lindera benzoin) loves moist - but not wet - soils in the shade and can even be trained into a treelike form. Enjoy the early yellow blooms that give way to deep red berries in the summer.
Once you chose conscious over noxious plants and start your native takeover, you'll see an immediate increase in pollinators, wildlife, and water percolation - and you won't want to stop. The role of gardens, whether intentional or not, is broader than pure ornamentation. Each plant contributes something to the function of a wider, interwoven system, allowing us to be true land stewards, and it all starts in our own backyards. What is Tech Debt?
Tech Debt, aka “Technical debt” is a tradeoff between short-term benefits of rapid delivery and long-term value. One of the main reasons businesses experience tech debt is that they choose speed over quality. While getting into a market quicker than other companies or getting a software out to consumers quicker may seem like a positive at first, that is not always the case. This can potentially lead to negatives when all is said and done. There are common misconceptions on what causes tech debt.
How does Tech Debt negatively impact your business?
Tech debt has several impacts on a business, whether those impacts are apparent right away or not. At first sight, these impacts may seem like a minor annoyance, but often grow and become larger issues if not resolved right away. There are several ways that tech debt can have an impact on your business, some more impactful than others. Below are three ways tech debt impacts your business. 1. Reduced Progression One impact tech debt has on your business is paying off the "interest" that comes with it over time. The time taken to resolve tech debt is taken from progression, whether that is new projects or other upgrades. We all know that time is money and dedicating time to remediation can reduce progress.
What causes Tech Debt?
Finding the causes of tech debt are just as important as knowing how to deal with it. There are multiple factors that directly lead to companies experiencing tech debt, and some of these factors can certainly be avoided. Here are some of the top causes of tech debt: 1. Time Pressures Companies or development teams within a company often release software, hardware, or services that may not be "complete." This occurs due to companies putting in place accelerated timelines or getting into a market quicker. What this comes down to again is a company choosing speed over quality when it comes to their products or services. 2. Outdated Hardware While intangible factors can lead to this issue, tangible factors, such as outdated computers, can also lead to it. In a way, interest also builds up with tech debt. Putting off upgrades and replacements for hardware, essentially compounds interest, leading to paying more in the long run. Using old technology may seem like a good way to save money, but in reality, it is creating tech debt. 3. Changing Environment Industries and the consumer market are always changing and evolving. Consumer expectations always changing and new market opportunities arising, frequently create difficulties for IT leaders. Other ongoing challenges that create tech debt are new cyber threats and new market opportunities. These are factors that can be difficult to avoid or can be completely overlooked. 26

2. Poor Performance Pushing out products too quickly may seem beneficial at face value but could lead to poor performance down the road. Fixing poor performance from products or bugs within products creates more technical debt, taking manpower and time away from other projects that benefit the business. Technical debt is incurred when products display poor performance, taking time to fix bugs, system crashes, etc. 3. Tarnished Trust due to Tech Debt Whether a company is using outdated hardware or outdated software, technical debt will create issues. Old hardware or software being used by companies lead to increased security risks for those companies. These security risks can put sensitive data at risk, whether it's the consumer's data or the company's data. Would a business or consumer truly have a sense of trust with a company that may be putting their sensitive data at risk?

One way to look at this is crossing a bridge from implementation to operation. The initial step is implementing the fixes to whatever tech debt there is. Once that is completed, the product itself should be moved to something that can be supported. As part of the operation, the product should not need extra effort and time to fix issues.

Here’s a small-world, you-can-go-homeagain - story you might enjoy: I recently ‘expanded my horizons’ by starting a new gallery in Chelsea with some other artists. (I’ve been told that my art belongs there, or perhaps even in Berlin, because much as I love the Pennsylvania countryside where I live and work, I paint more abstracts than landscapes.) As my first NY solo show was installed, I wondered (with some trepidation) what visitors to Pictor Gallery would think of my work. But it turns out that people here and in New York react in much the same way…you want to know the inspiration, and understand the process, am I right? I love the process of creating art…thinking about what I’ll do, choosing materials and becoming immersed in the making. But what I live for is meeting visitors, hearing your stories and your thoughts. And when I’m back at work in my studio, something you said will come back to me, influencing what I’ll do next!

Or, our approach might be more subtle, expressed with certain colors, techniques or symbolism. Regardless, I think that viewers who take the time to study a work of art become part of what we make. And for those who collect, art becomes a part of you: A landscape might carry you away from a stressful or overly gray day. Something whimsical can capture your sense of humor. A face or figure reminds you of someone, and a purely abstract piece opens you to the pleasure of design in its own right, with surprises every time you look at it.
Does everything you collect have to be from a well known artist, or even an original? No to both. Mix and match with confidence. Who is going to care whether your secret favorite piece was inexpensive? Those who mind don’t matter, as the saying goes.
As an interior designer, I have been asked so many times, “Where do we start?” Truthfully there is no one rule that must be obeyed. A wonderful piece of art can be the starting point for a great room design

WHAT’S COMING UP, NEAR YOU! If you collect art, you are familiar with the many galleries and art fairs in our area. Most of these are juried, so you know that what you’ll see has been vetted. Wayne Art Center’s much anticipated Plein Air Festival is coming up in May. In July, ARTsisters will be exhibiting at Main Line Art Center. The Delaware Valley Art League is showing at Greenbank Mills in Wilmington, April through July. And the very popular Chester County Studio Tour will be May 14 and 15 this year. You can get a taste of what will be showing at the Opening event, hosted by Chester County Art Association. And I hope you’ll stop by to see me and my guest artists at Studio 56!
