The cost and frequency of auto insurance claims are rising. To help cover these costs and help make sure you and your assets are properly protected, auto insurance rates are increasing industry-wide. Here are 3 reasons why insurance rates are going up, along with what you can do to help manage your rates.

3 Reasons why auto insurance rates are going up. More Miles Driven Lower gas prices in recent years mean many American families can afford to drive more. But increased time on the road leads to more accidents and more insurance claims, and insurance rates are adjusting throughout the country to better cover these expected costs. For the safety of you and your family, always make sure you are following good driving habits: Buckle up and obey all traffic laws, such as speed limits, traffic signals and stop signs, and put you smart devices away when you're behind the wheel. Turn you phone and other smart devices off so you're not tempted to glance at a notification or incoming call. Even a glance takes your eyes off the road and could lead to danger.

SENIOR LIFESTYLES When you're young, often the biggest injury you may receive from a fall is redfaced embarrassment. As we get older, physical changes, health conditions, and medications make falls more likely. In fact, every second of every day, an older adult (age 65+) falls in the U.S. Falls are not an inevitable part of aging. That's why it's important to reduce the risk of falling by considering six simple fall-prevention strategies recommended by the Mayo Clinic. 1) Make an appointment with your doctor Begin your fall-prevention plan by making an appointment with your doctor. Be prepared to answer questions such as: What medications are you taking? Make a list of your prescription and over-the-counter medications or bring them with you to the appointment. Your doctor can review your medications for side effects and interactions that may increase your risk of falling. Have you fallen or almost fallen before? Write down the details, including when, where and how you fell or almost fell. Details such as these may help your doctor identify specific fall-prevention strategies. Could your health conditions cause a fall? Certain eye and ear disorders may increase your risk of falls. Be prepared to discuss your health conditions and how 6

According to a State Farm® survey, almost one-third of drivers access the internet while driving, and 10 percent record video with their phones. Even voice-activated car commands can divert cognitive abilities and attention. Rethink using the phone while driving, and don't attempt anything else, such as eating or changing radio stations or podcasts. If you have a teen, be sure to talk with them about safe driving habits: The highest proportion of distracted drivers involved in fatal crashes are 15-to 19-year-olds. Rising Repair Costs Parking sensors, lane-departure warnings, and even stronger materials are now widely available on many vehicles. While those smarter sensors and stronger devices can help improve safety, they are also more expensive to repair. Since 2005, the cost of body work has risen nearly 40 percent more than overall inflation, and the size of collision claims increased 8.2 percent from 2014 to 2016.

With your doctor's OK, consider activities such as walking, water workouts or tai chi - a gentle exercise that involves slow and graceful dance-like movements. Such activities reduce the risk of falls by improving strength, balance, coordination and flexibility. 3) Wear sensible shoes Consider changing your footwear as part of your fall-prevention plan. High heels, floppy slippers and shoes with slick soles can make you slip, stumble and fall. So can walking in your stocking feet. Be sure to buy properly fitting, sturdy shoes with nonskid soles that are not too thick. Choose lace-up shoes instead of slip-ons, and keep the laces tied. 4) Remove home hazards Take a close look around your home. To make your home safer remove boxes, newspapers, electrical cords and phone cords from walkways. Move coffee tables, magazine racks and plant stands from high-traffic areas. Secure loose rugs with double-faced tape, tacks or a slip-resistant backing - or remove loose rugs from your home. Use nonslip mats in your bathtub or shower. 5) Light up your living space Keep your home brightly lit to avoid tripping on objects that are hard to see. Place night lights in your bedroom, bathroom and hallways and place a lamp within reach of your bed for middle-of-the-night needs. Store flashlights in easy-to-find places in the event of a power outage. 6) Use assistive devices Your doctor might recommend using a cane or walker to keep you steady. WHEN THE WATERS RISE, WILL YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO? What is a Flash Flood?

Densely populated areas have a higher risk for flash floods than rural areas. Flash floods can occur within minutes or hours of a heavy rainfall, and waters can rise as high as 30 feet or more. Even small streams and creeks can flood rapidly and cause damage. Flash floods are usually caused by slow-moving thunderstorms.

According to the American Red Cross, flash floods are the No. 1 weather-related killer in the U.S. Almost half of all flash flood fatalities are vehicle related, according to the National Weather Service. If you're driving and approach a water-covered road, turn around. Just 6 inches of water can stall a vehicle, and 2 feet can float most cars, trucks and SUVs. Here are some other tips to stay high and dry: Know your proximity to rivers, streams and dams During heavy rain, avoid underpasses, underground parking garages and basements Avoid hiking or camping if thunderstorms are predicted Develop an evacuation plan for your family

Floods are one of the most common weather hazards in the United States. They can happen anywhere at any time of year.

According to the National Weather Service, "Flash floods are short-term events occurring within six hours of the causative event (heavy rain, dam break, levee failure, rapid snowmelt and ice jams) and often within two hours of the start of highintensity rainfall.” Flash floods can move homes and cars, uproot trees and destroy bridges. Because floods happen with little to no warning, residents in low-lying areas are particularly at risk.

Don't walk in water above your ankles; you can be swept off your feet in as little as 6 inches of rushing water Turn off the electricity and other utilities During heavy rain, Township storm sewers can become blocked with debris causing flooding in the street. In preparation of any rain event, Township crews do attempt to clean storm inlets to make sure they are able to collect water from the street. If you notice debris on top of a storm inlet before or after a storm, contact the Township immediately. If your roadway becomes flooded during a storm, call 911 immediately so emergency personnel can respond to close the road to traffic.

What is Impervious Surface? Impervious Surface- A surface that prevents the infiltration of water into the ground. Impervious surfaces include, but are not limited to, streets, sidewalks, pavements, driveway areas, or roofs. Any surface areas designed to be gravel or crushed stone shall be regarded as impervious surfaces. Impervious surfaces reduce the amount of rainwater that can be absorbed into the ground. When there is less ground for water to penetrate, it can quickly flow directly into stormsewers and creeks, increasing the likelihood of more frequent and more severe flooding. Additionally, pollutants are unable to penetrate an impervious surface. Rainfall may carry these pollutants directly into our waterways resulting in water that is unfit for wildlife or recreational activities. Water runoff from an acre of paved surface is approximately ten to twenty times greater than an acre of grass. Materials such as crushed stone, porous concrete, and pervious pavers can provide various amounts of infiltration but are not considered 100% pervious. To minimize the impact of water runoff, impervious surface coverage is limited to a maximum percentage per property, which varies by municipality. Any additional increase of concrete, brick, asphalt, etc. on a property may require a building permit prior to construction.

SEWER BACKUP AND FLOODING INSURANCE

Sewer backups and flooding can cause devastating property damage and are not covered by standard homeowners’ insurance policies. The majority of these claims are the responsibility of the property owner. Sewage from sanitary sewer lines occasionally back up into houses through drain pipes. These backups not only cause extensive water damage that is difficult and expensive to repair, but also create health hazards.

Haverford Township is not responsible for damages caused by sewers, drains and sump pumps except under limited/special circumstances provided by the PA Municipal Immunity laws. Township residents must be aware that they should review their homeowner’s, flood and sewer backup insurance coverage with their agent/insurance company in order to properly protect their personal residences—probably the most valuable tangible asset that we all have.

Please pay particular attention to the following coverages: Coverage for Sewers, Drains and Sump Pumps: This valuable coverage is not included under your standard homeowner's policy but can be purchased by endorsement for an additional premium. Flood Coverage: Flood coverage is not included under your homeowner’s policy. However, flood insurance is available under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and can be obtained through your insurance agent or broker.

GARDENING & LANDSCAPING: NATIVE LAWNS 3 Tips for Choosing Native Plants for Your Yard Plant selection is more than just gardening; it's restoration. Over the course of a few centuries, we have changed the topography and soil chemistry of every corner of this country through agriculture, industry, and urban development. We have altered the places where native species were once able to establish themselves successfully, and our local ecosystems have suffered as a result. If you're working to restore the natural habitat in your backyard with native plants, here are three steps to help you pick the right plants for the job: 1. Choose to Restore 2. Choose to Strengthen 3. Choose to Enhance The first step is to choose the plants that are going to do the bulk of the restorative work on your property. In the ecological restoration industry, this is known as your “workhorse” species. The workhorse species

is that one plant, maybe two, that will take up most of the area to do the heavy lifting of shading out other invasive plants and building up your baseline. To achieve this, you'll want to consider what species match your backyard ecosystem. Consider factors like soil conditions, water holding capacity, light exposure, the ecoregion in which you reside, and the historical use of your property. Did your property used to be an old farm or industrial park, for example? Once you have your restoration species, you'll want to select plants that will strengthen your property's ecosystem. What native plants are currently thriving in and around your yard? Is Remote Work here to stay? Over the last year and a half, working from home has been the new “norm”; changing the work lives of virtually everyone. Despite the quick shift, change was needed. Changes were ultimately made to keep businesses afloat and to keep people safe. Some prefer working from the office, making this change rather difficult, while others had no issue working remote. We've broken down remote work into 4 points of discussion.

Cost

Working from home can cause a slight financial impact to a business. One cost that comes with working from home is software. One piece of software that would be needed is a Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), which cost roughly $12-$13 per month per user. We'd also have to take into consideration remote connectivity software, management software, and VOIP softphones. This combination would cost around $50 per user per month on average. Hardware is another cost remote-users face depending on what the business provides. On average, a monitor ranges from $200-$500. Another accessory could be a webcam, which can range from $25$200. Employees may also need additional or more accommodating computers, which can range from $400 to $3,500, depending on job function. As an alternative to a softphone, some may want a VOIP desk phone, which is on average $50-$150. Having a business router with VPN function may also be needed.

A repeating topic of concern is a user's home network. Power outages and internet outages at home can be aproblem, putting a halt to productivity. Home networks are somewhat unreliable as they may not have the proper wireless strength and direct connectivity to the router. Working from home may bring up the topic of security, raising concerns that weren't previously considered beforehand. A security concern that is consistently brought up while working from home is the use of personal devices. A global survey by Gartner found that 55% of those surveyed are using personally owned computers or smartphones. The use of personal devices can bring data risks with the possibility of devices being lost or stolen, getting malware/viruses, or being exposed to data breaches. Use of personal devices can be ideal to employees but can raise issues for companies. Sharing data securely is also a concern. A method to help securely transfer data while working from home is mandating the use of a VPN. Other tactics that can be used to help with securely sharing data are offering basic security training and installing Data Loss Prevention (DLP) security software designed specifically to prevent data theft or exposure. Implementing and utilizing organized file sharing tools is an effective way to keep sensitive data secure, especially when transferring it. Transferring and sharing 18

Connectivity

Working from home may create a different work environment for many, but the concern of connectivity may remain. One aspect is office accessibility, mainly having access to files, applications, or other data. Access to these resources can be available by using company-managed cloud storage such as Google Drive or OneDrive.

Besides network connectivity and office accessibility, department collaboration and overall morale is important to consider. Working from home means virtual meetings rather than meeting in person, possibly leading to gaps in overall communication. Something else that is missed are the “water-cooler” conversations, which could either be workrelated or a distraction from work, but in any regards a way to socialize, which can influence morale. Some people go into the office to provide a different atmosphere away from home, whereas some people would rather enjoy being at home.

Productivity

impact it could have on productivity. When discussing productivity, work-life balance comes into play. Working from home provides the flexibility of working hours rather than the typical 8am-5pm at the office, of course depending on the manager. Another change is reduced travel time, reduced frustrations with traffic, and the advantage/disadvantage of being around family more. Distractions also play a key role in productivity while working from home. There is always the possibility of dogs barking, someone being at the door, or kids screaming while on a virtual meeting. There is also the temptation of doing household chores or home projects. In conclusion, working from home brings its own challenges, but also brings benefits. As long as you and your company have a plan of action to sustain the work-fromhome era, it can be a win-win situation.

HEALTH & WELLNESS Navigating through breast cancer diagnosis, treatment and survivorship. No woman wants to be called back after having a mammogram, but when there is a suspicious finding additional imaging may be needed, usually an ultrasound or other mammography images. If this imaging also shows a suspicious finding, a biopsy is typically recommended, and a breast cancer nurse navigator meets with the patient. As a rule, patients with an abnormal diagnostic mammogram or a new breast lump are seen by a Main Line Health breast surgeon within 48 hours to determine the optimal biopsy approach. "This process can produce a lot of anxiety for patients," says Laura Bruce, lead breast cancer nurse navigator for Main Line Health. "We are here to provide education and support. We tell people what to expect with the biopsy and set them up to meet with a breast surgeon. If they do have breast cancer, we will stay with them throughout their treatment.” Breast cancer nurse navigators provide individualized guidance and support to patients, families and caregivers throughout treatment, from breast cancer screening through breast cancer survivorship. A nurse navigator is a registered nurse who acts as a liaison between patients and their health care providers. "Cancer is a complex disease, and many people may be involved with a patient's care," says Bruce. "It can be overwhelming to a family. We help coordinate care, assist with appointments and explain testing and treatments. We help connect families with genetic counselors. We help patients find community resources, and work closely with oncology social workers. We also connect patients with integrative care such as reiki and acupuncture. Patients should never feel they are walking this path alone. We are by their side throughout.” Nurse navigators further play a significant role in developing survivorship plans for patients. Survivorship focuses on the health and well-being of a person with cancer during and after treatment, from the time of diagnosis, and including education around cancer screening and connection to community resources. 22

My Dog Stopped Eating!

Here are some common reasons. What are some common reasons for a dog to stop eating? When a dog stops eating it is referred to as anorexia. Dogs can become anorexic for many reasons. Sometimes it is an indication of a gastrointestinal issue. This could range from a simple cause like gastroenteritis to a more serious issue like gastrointestinal neoplasia or cancer. Gastroenteritis often occurs when dogs eat something out of the ordinary, from a new food or treat to getting into the garbage or ingesting something outside. Loss of appetite can also be a sign of other systemic illnesses such as kidney or liver disease, pancreatitis, and numerous other medical issues. What illnesses are associated with a dog not eating? There are countless medical causes for a dog to stop eating. Some are simple and can resolve spontaneously or get better with some simple medical intervention while others are more serious and require more extensive testing and treatment. The most common reason that we see dogs stop eating is gastroenteritis. This is inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract that occurs in dogs most commonly when they eat something out of the ordinary. More serious causes tend to result in a more gradual or persistent loss of appetite. These might include renal disease, liver disease, pancreatitis, cancer, and many other systemic illnesses.

Can a change in surroundings affect a dog's appetite? A change in surrounding can affect a dog's appetite temporarily. If you have a dog who is easily stressed or normally has a picky appetite, then moving to a new home, boarding, or being cared for in another home could cause a dog to eat less or refuse food for a few days. But an otherwise healthy dog will eat when she is hungry or accept tempting food like chicken, ground beef, or treats. 26

How can dental issues affect a dog's appetite? Dental issues should not affect your dog's appetite. Dogs are good at eating in a way to avoid oral pain. Dental issues can affect your dog's comfort when eating (he may drool excessively or have trouble picking up or chewing food), but he will still feel hungry and should show interest in food when it is offered.

How long can a dog go without eating? A dog can go for several days without eating and it does not cause bodily harm. Cats are very different and should not go more than 2 or 3 days without eating. Of course, both dogs and cats cannot go without drinking for more than a day or two without suffering dehydration.

When is it necessary to see a specialist about your dog not eating? If your dog stops eating, you can wait a day or two to see if his appetite returns. If your dog is experiencing other symptoms, like vomiting, diarrhea, or lethargy he should be evaluated by a veterinarian within 24 hours. If your dog has a persistent loss of appetite and has seen either your primary veterinarian or an emergency veterinarian, has had initial testing done (bloodwork, x-rays, ultrasound), and has not responded to initial medical therapy, then he should be seen by a specialist. The type of specialist depends on the results of initial testing and could range from an Internal Medicine Specialist to a Dermatologist, or a Surgeon.

THE MAURICE STEPHENS HOUSE

Honoring The Past And Looking To The Future

The Maurice Stephens House is located just across Route 23 from Washington Memorial Chapel, on the lands of Valley Forge National Historical Park's Grand Parade. According to the incised date stone found in the upper portion of the building's original east gable wall, the main portion of the house was constructed in 1816. Oral history recorded in 1850 in Henry Woodman's The History of Valley Forge indicates that the property was the site of Brigadier General Jedediah Huntington's quarters during the Valley Forge winter encampment. The Provincial tax record for the property indicates that in 1769 the property was occupied by one Zachariah Davis, and it was likely Davis' log house which Woodman states served as General Huntington's quarters. Woodman goes on to state that there were a number of huts erected on the property as well, one of which was occupied by General von Steuben, who would drill soldiers on what would become the Stephens property. Maurice Stephens is first listed in the Provincial tax record for the property in the year 1779, but it is not known exactly when he moved in. After building the stone house that is the heart of the structure we see today in 1816, he sold the property in 1825, two years before his death. It passed through the hands of four other owners before becoming part of Valley Forge State Park in 1919. Initially, it continued to be utilized as a farm and the barn home to a flock of 115 sheep that helped keep the grass down in the Park. Over the years it

served as ranger dormitories, Park offices, and even a nature center, but the house had been vacant since the mid-1990s. The Stephens House is one of many (and one of the most prominent) historic structures that the Park aims to lease through its adaptive reuse program. Through this program, the Park puts historic structures back into use while realizing rental income that it can then use to rehabilitate other structures. Because of the Stephens House's prominent location in the Park, Park leadership saw it as the ideal home for the Valley Forge Park Alliance. The beautiful building contains ample space to house the Alliance's offices and is well suited to serve as a hub of Park activities that would draw attention to the Alliance and its efforts to assist the Park. It will also feature a café operated by ANEU in Paoli, creating a refreshing oasis for weary travelers in the very heart of the Park.

The Alliance convened the Maurice Stephens Advisory Group one year ago. The group is comprised of community leaders with expertise in construction, fundraising, leasing, and the small businesses that could partner with the Alliance in this space so that it can once again welcome visitors. They are working hand-in-hand with the Alliance and Park leaders to finalize the construction plans, agree on lease terms that satisfy both entities, plan the public use of the space, and raise the funds required to make it all happen. “VFPA's rehabilitation and operation of the Maurice Stephens house would serve as a shining example of the capacity of publicprivate partnerships to restore and breathe new life into historic structures,” said the Park's business manager, Patrick Madden. KEEPING CHILDREN SAFE

Learn the flashing signal light system that school bus drivers use to alert motorists of pending actions: Yellow flashing lights indicate the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children. Motorists should slow down and prepare to stop their vehicles. Red flashing lights and extended stop arms indicate the bus has stopped and children are getting on or off. Motorists must stop their cars and wait until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop-arm is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving before they can start driving again.

You can only sleep in, spend time with friends and family and enjoy life to the fullest for so long. It gets old. The kids keep saying things like, “School is awesome! I am so excited to open the gift of education each and every day,” “The birds sound so pretty at 5:00 in the morning” and “I love homework more than my Rainbow Flip Flops and Uggs.” Seeing the bus lights coming down the road on a foggy morning produces a giddy euphoria in the children akin to past reported sightings of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer… The start of school can be crazy and stressful for families. Below are a few tips and reminders that might help to make the transition back to school a little easier: 34

When you meet or overtake a stopped school bus with red signal lights flashing and stop arm extended, you MUST STOP. When you approach an intersection where a school bus is stopped with red signal lights flashing and stop arm extended, you MUST STOP. You MUST STOP at least ten (10) feet away from the school bus. You MUST WAIT until the red lights have stopped flashing and the stop arm has been withdrawn before moving. DO NOT MOVE until all the children have reached a place of safety.

KNOW YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES 1.5 million children are transported on Pennsylvania roads each day. These children are transported more than 346 million miles to school each year. Every year, children are needlessly injured or killed by drivers passing stopped school buses.

Reestablish the daily routine: Bed time, dinner time, wake up time. These all need to be slowly brought back from the summer time “do what you want when you want” routine. The homework is going to start pouring in. Make sure they have a quiet place to do their work and that they are managing their time properly. Encourage them to put their phone in a different room while they are working. Removing technology from your child one hour before you actually want them to be asleep can be extremely helpful.

Plan healthy dinners ahead of time. If you can make some dinners over the weekend and freeze them, even better. I am happy to share some of my recipes upon request. If your middle schooler is annoying you, consider buying them #3 pencils (you may need to mail order these from Canada) and folders with puppies on them. Middle school is like space travel in many ways. If your child's heat tiles fall off upon reentry to school, please ask for help! Good Luck!

I've been thinking a lot lately about people who give back. We all know people who are the first to donate or volunteer. And others who mean to. And some who, frankly my dear, don't give a damn. Generous people seem to have several common traits: Personal gain doesn't motivate them. They don't need or expect payback. Their enthusiasm is contagious. They feel gratitude and humility. They are optimistic and don't need to see the fruits of their labor. They believe in others and in themselves.

Farther afield, Barbara Shelly is an artist who divides her time between the Philadelphia area and New York City. Locally she has shown at Radley Run Country Club, Wayne Art Center and The Yard in Philadelphia. Barbara is a mixed media artist whose powerful work highlights people in the news and their passion for change. She partnered early on with Michelle Cave, who had just started a non-profit professional dance school for kids who couldn't afford lessons. Together they planned fundraisers which could attract attention and create revenue for Ballet and Beyond through sales of Barbara's art. As she tells it, “it was and continues to be a win/win.” Barbara now curates annual shows which have expanded to include other artists and donates 50% of her sales to Ballet and Beyond NYC. One of her most famous clients to date was Spike Lee, who insisted on paying double Barbara's asking price for his portrait in order to help the program. George Gallatig remembers feeling envious of other art students when he was young. He thought that “they were magical. That they had powers to build images in their minds and the skill to put them down on paper in ways that

Let me introduce you to a few of them: Sue Stefanski paints every day, so she is happy to donate some of her beautiful oil landscapes when a good cause comes up. Baker Industries, Kencrest and Habitat for Humanity have all been able to offer her paintings to people for whom they find housing. Sue joined ARTsisters and the Delaware Valley Art League because both organizations are committed to giving back. Recently she created a series of paintings to benefit the Kelly Music Center in Oakmont. Sales of her 12 musician portraits will help the center continue its free concerts, employment of special needs people and other community projects. Sue feels that art “helps people, just to look at it.” Her work is intentionally peaceful and serene, “a gift from God that you have to use.” She shows

were way beyond anything I was able to accomplish.” George has made wonderful wood carvings for several years and now paints watercolors en plein air in all types of weather. If his paintings intend to communicate an idea or tell a story, his carvings are keepsakes he creates for people, whether they are commemorative ornaments or ornate walking sticks. George has always put his organizational skills to work by volunteering for non-profit art associations. He is president of the Delaware Valley Art League, and also donates art to libraries, churches and other regional fundraisers. He recalls painting a watercolor at a West Chester event when a photographer requested that he strike a painterly pose to be used for advertising.
