On the drawing board… There have been several changes in Haverford Township over the past few years, both big and small. Working through the plans proposed by private developers is the job of the Township's Planning Commission. Its members review plans for compliance with the Township's Codes and draft land use regulations for consideration by the Board of Commissioners.

The former Llanerch School on Llandillo Road has a new owner who hopes to convert the historic building to residential apartments. Neighbors, long concerned about the future of the vacant building are working with the owner and Township staff to address questions regarding parking and storm water runoff.

The Planning Commission, a group of resident volunteers, operates in accordance with both the Commonwealth of PA and Township laws. Haverford is very fortunate to have the expertise of engineering and architectural design professionals Angelo Capuzzi and Christian Gaumann; attorneys Paul D'Emilio, William Rhodes and Christopher Vitali. Chairman Joseph Russo is an electrical engineer with businessmen and local historian Charles Reardon rounding out the group.

A seven lot subdivision at the end of Harvard Road is being modified to a six lot subdivision at the request of the buyer of two lots. The consolidated lot will allow the construction of a larger, custom-built home adjoining the multi-purpose trail connecting the Y and the Skatium through the center of town. A six lot subdivision of the approximate 11 acre property at 26 Tunbridge Road is proposed. The plan calls for the original home with a large open space parcel to remain, the construction of a cul-de-sac road for street frontage to five new homes and the widening of Tunbridge Road along the frontage of the lot are proposed.

Board of Commissioners Haverford Township is governed by nine Township Commissioners who are elected by the residents of each of its nine wards. Commissioners elect their own President and Vice-President at the beginning of each new year. The Commissioners appoint a Township Manager, who oversees all Township staff. Regular meetings of the Board of Commissioners are held the 2nd Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Quatrani Building, 2325 Darby Road, Havertown, PA. A Note from the Township Manager Chester Pike. Working in cooperation with local businesses, the Township is making an effort to improve the image of our community, acquiring community block grants to pay for such improvements. We have also installed many new American and Township Flags along our major roadways, and constructed new and improved gardens along West Chester Pike, Darby Road and Haverford Avenue. We hope to continue this objective throughout the other business areas of the township.

Dear Resident, I am pleased to report that we recently received a $139,415 grant to construct new streetscape improvements along County Line Road, from Loraine to Humphreys. The improvements will consist of new sidewalks, curbing, improved water runoff, and new energy-efficient lighting. By investing in these community improvements, we hope to improve your shopping, dining and walking experience and support our local business communities with your patronage. We have undertaken similar improvements in the business districts at Brookline Blvd, Lancaster Avenue, Manoa Road and West

Township staff continues to work in cooperation with officials from PennDOT to identify needed repairs to our state roads as a result from the winter damages. PennDOT recently made several repairs along Lawrence, Darby, Coopertown, Earlington, Manoa, Burmont and have many more to improve until they complete their task. PennDOT keeps us informed of the work it plans in the community and informed us that Marple Road and Darby Creek Roads will be completely repaved in the near future. If the concern requires immediate attention, please call 1-800FIX-ROAD to be connected directly to the PennDot maintenance office for our area. The Park & Recreation facilities in Haverford Township are arguably the best in Delaware County. Be assured you can always a wide variety of activities and

events scheduled for all residents by visiting the township website at www.haverfordtownship.org. Our Public Works Department is to be commended for their hard work and dedication to keeping our Township well maintained. This department is not just about snow and trash removal. Other services they provide include road maintenance/repair, storm sewer maintenance, street signs, brush removal, snow and ice removal, leaf collection, landscaping, not to mention our spring and summer clean-up and ongoing maintenance and throughout the township. You can always recognize when you enter or leave Haverford Township by the conditions of our roads and facilities. Our Police and EMS Departments work together to provide emergency assistance and keep us safe. We are very proud to have the services of five volunteer fire departments Oakmont, Llanerch, Brookline, Bon Air and Manoa --caring for the community by responding to fires and providing fire safety education to our children. We sincerely appreciate the firefighters for their commitment to our community. Please remember these dedicated men and women during their membership drives. They need your support to continue the level of services to our great town.

Haverford Music Festival - Saturday, September 12

The Fifth Annual Haverford Music Festival (HMF), presented by GIANT, is scheduled for Saturday, September 12, 2015. Organized by the Haverford Civic Council, it will feature four internationally acclaimed headlining acts, plus numerous local and regional artists, performing on four stages near the intersection of Eagle and Darby Roads in Havertown. Vendor booths will be along Darby Road & Hathaway Lane, including food booths, a beer garden, children's activities and much more fun for the whole family.Admission is free.

Field Stage will be country/Americana artist Laura Cantrell. Born in Nashville, TN, her abiding interest in country music helped her stay connected with her family roots while going to college in New York. Her releases include tribute album Kitty Wells Dresses: Songs of the Queen of Country Music and, most recently, No Way There from Here. Cantrell has been featured in The New York Times, O- The Oprah Magazine, Elle and The Wall Street Journal.

On the Oakmont Field Stage located behind Oakmont Elementary School Headliner Wesley Stace, formerly performing under the stage name, John Wesley Harding will perform. Stace, the talented singer/songwriter and author, resides with his family in Philadelphia. He is known for the popular radio track "The Devil in Me" and his latest album, Self-Titled, is the first to be issued under his given name. Preceding Stace on the

On the Darby Road Stage High-energy rockabilly party band Dibbs Preston and the Detonators, who have played all over the U.S., is headlining. Dibbs and the Dets' explosive style keeps fans dancin' and partyin'. Leader/singer/guitarist Stephen "Dibbs" Preston former front man for The Rockats, is now based in Glenside, PA. Highland Park, NJ quartet the Grip Weeds will precede Dibbs Preston and the Detonators. The Grip Weeds are masters of psychedelic and

garage rock, folk-based ballads and thoughtprovoking social commentary. Several Grip Weeds tunes have earned "Coolest Song in the World" honors on the Little Steven's Underground Garage weekly terrestrial radio show. The Grip Weeds' new album is titled How I Won the War. Much of HMF 2015 will also be heard live on iRadioPhilly, Philadelphia's Internet Radio Community. All proceeds from the Haverford Music Festival support special township projects. To date, more than $46,000 has been distributed among several community organizations: Haverford High School's Jazz Residency Program; the Grange Estate's outdoor amphitheater; Haverford's Adult School; Music Works, a nonprofit program that brings music therapy to children, seniors and other individuals in the Delaware Valley; the Friends of Haverford Trails; the Haverford Township Dog Park and Kelly Music for Life have also benefited from the festival proceeds.

Call For Volunteers! Have you ever seen a fire truck pass by and wonder where they were going or what it is like to be a firefighter responding to the emergency? If you have wondered, did you ever think about becoming a member of one of Haverford Township's Fire Companies? There are 5 volunteer fire companies that make up the Haverford Township Bureau of Fire: the Oakmont, Llanerch, Brookline, Bon Air and the Manoa Fire Companies. Several of these companies have provided over 100 years of volunteer service to the community. We are always looking to recruit new members to keep this proud tradition of volunteering for the community alive. What's it like to be a firefighter? It is a unique experience. Firefighting is exciting, intense, and can be physically demanding and scary at times, but it is also rewarding to help your friends and neighbors. Since every fire and emergency is different, we spend lots of time training for a variety of incidents. New firefighters attend county sponsored training classes, which teach the essential skills needed for firefighting safely. We train weekly to keep our skills sharp and learn new strategies and tactics. As firefighters, we see things that most people won't see during their lifetime. Although we have a special skill set, we aren't super humans. We're the neighbor

up the street or the person you see at your kid's baseball game. You could be one of us! What are the benefits of being a firefighter? There is personal reward for helping people in need. Firefighting can be a satisfying experience filled with opportunities for personal achievement and excitement. Friendships are formed that last a life time. The experience that can be gained through training in the volunteer fire service can be used to qualify for a career department in a major city. Many members of the Haverford Township Bureau of Fire have gone on to careers in larger Fire Departments located in Philadelphia, New York City and the Los Angeles City Fire Department. In addition, you can be a part of the tradition of volunteer service to our community. The volunteer fire service in Haverford Township helps to keep taxes from rising. It would cost approximately 11 million dollars a year to fund a paid fire department in the township. What's In Your Medicine Cabinet? What is in your medicine cabinet and why? Too often we keep unused prescription medicines in storage, "Just in case". Frequently, antibiotics that we did not finished when we were sick or a pain reliever after an injury. This practice has problems. If an antibiotic prescription was not finished, unless stopped by your health provider, it may allow the infection to continue and cause more harm. Additionally, partial use can contribute to antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria. Often, when we feel better we stop taking our prescription. This is a mistake, let the medicine work and take as prescribed. The second issue is self prescribing the saved medication the next time you are sick. Antibiotics are specific to the type of infection, not all antibiotics are susceptible to all bacteria. Please follow the directions on the container and talk to your pharmacist or physician if you have any questions. Developments in the field medicine over the last few decades have been remarkable. However, as is the case with many blessings, there is an associated curse. Our community, like most throughout the country, has experienced a spike in the inappropriate use of prescription medications, particularly pain relievers. The most dangerous and most abused are those in the opiate family. These include medications under multiple brand names and generic names. Most often these medicines are prescribed for pain; however, derivatives are also used for cough suppression and treatment of diarrhea. The potential of abuse and addiction is extremely high and is rising.

Addiction frequently starts when a person gains access to a prescription opiate for recreational purposes. Once the source of the prescription opiate is no longer available the addicted subject will often resort to the illegal purchase of a similar prescription drug, theft of an opiatederived drug, or obtaining the street drug heroin. It is a fact that half of the heroin overdose patients started with prescription opiate abuse.

Use of the Medicine Drop Box system also prevents the unused drugs from contaminating our water system, a byproduct of flushing medicines down the drain.

Every township and borough throughout Delaware County, like every county in United States, has felt the effects of opiate and heroin abuse, ours is no exception. Haverford Township has been working with Delaware County District Attorney Jack Whelan to aggressively address this issue. Our EMS Chief sits on the Delaware County Heroin Task Force and the Township has been a leader in the program to equip police with naloxone; known as the "reversal agent" or "antidote" for an opiate overdose. Since its inception on November 29th 2014, this program has saved over sixty lives in Delaware County. Several times that number have been resuscitated by EMS providers during the same period.

Trash & Recycling Ordinance Changes TRASH & RECYCLING Changes have been made to our Trash Ordinance P8-2015, a few of the important changes are as follows: The size of each container shall not exceed thirty-five gallon capacity. There is now a limit of no more than ten (10) bags or containers for pickup during any one collection. Separate arrangements must be made by telephone with the Department of Public Works for the pickup of diapers, tissues, rubber gloves or other waste generated in the care and maintenance of a person receiving radiation treatments for the safety of the general public. Please remember that no filled can is to be over 40 lbs & there is to be nothing sticking out of the cans for the safety of our employees. Residents are also reminded that it is unlawful to place trash or trash containers curbsite before dusk the evening prior to the day of scheduled pick up. Cans must be removed within 12 hours of removal, and properly stored.

YARD WASTE - Our Yard Waste consists of twigs, branches and weeds. There is to be no grass or leaves in with the Yard Waste. Yard Waste is to be put out in the brown biodegradable bags or in a trash can. Yard Waste will not be collected in plastic bags.

In the 1980's, while Tom was teaching music at the Neupauer Conservatory in Philadelphia, he met Stu Goodis. Their relationship started as student-teacher then grew over 30 years to colleague status. Tom introduced Stu to jazz. Their mutual love for jazz inspired each of them to become students of jazz guitar virtuoso and Philadelphia native Pat Martino, Tom in 1971 and Stu fifteen years later.

West Nile Virus Once again, Pennsylvania is dealing with West Nile Virus problem this summer, including several positive tests of the virus found in mosquitoes sampled from Haverford Township. The PaDEP's findings also indicate the risk for more human infections is high and will remain high through the rest of the summer and into early fall. Because the elderly and people with impaired immune systems are at highest risk of developing severe WNV illness, they should be especially careful about mosquito exposure.

Bti is a natural product that kills mosquito larvae, but is safe for people, pets, aquatic life and plants. Mosquitoes can bite at any time of day or night, but are most active at dawn and dusk. When outdoors, people can avoid mosquito bites by properly and consistently using DEET-containing insect repellents and covering exposed s k i n w i t h lightweight clothing. IMPORTANT INSURANCE COVERAGE NOTICE/REMINDER Township residents must be aware that they should review their homeowner's, flood and sewer backup insurance coverage with their agent/insurance companies in order to properly protect their personal residence, probably the most valuable tangible asset that we all have. Article I, Section 149-3, subsection C (2) Sewer Service Regulations of the Township Code states that all sewer service laterals from the Township's sewer, regardless of location, are the property of the customer and/or owner and shall be maintained by him in good condition and repair. When reviewing your homeowners policy, please pay particular attention to the following coverages: Coverage for Sewers, Drains and Sump Pumps: This valuable coverage is not included under your standard homeowner's policy but can be purchased by endorsement for an additional premium. The Township is not responsible for damages caused by sewers, drains and sump pumps except under limited/special circumstances provided by the PA Municipal Immunity laws. Flood Coverage: Flood coverage is not included under your homeowner's policy. However, flood insurance is available under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and can be obtained through your insurance agent or broker.

Money Transfer Scams Scam artists use a number of elaborate schemes to get your money, and many involve money transfers through companies like Western Union and MoneyGram or the purchase of a GreenDot Money Pak or Walmart MoneyCard. These are legitimate companies being used by criminals to take advantage of you. Many money transfer scams involve dramatic or convincing stories that play on your optimistic nature, your altruism or your thriftiness. But no matter how you parse it, they always cost you money. Here are some scams involving money transfers that you may recognize: Counterfeit Check Scams Someone sends you a check with instructions to deposit it and wire some or all the money back. Lotteries and Sweepstakes You just won a foreign lottery! The letter says so, and a cashier's check is included. All you have to do is deposit the check and wire money to pay for taxes and fees. Overpayment Scams Someone responds to your posting or ad, and offers to use a cashier's check,

personal check or corporate check to pay for the item you're selling. At the last minute, the so-called buyer (or the buyer's "agent") comes up with a reason to write the check for more than the purchase price, and asks you to wire back the difference. Online Purchase Scams If you are buying something online and the seller insists on a money transfer or prepaid card as the only form of payment, consider it a red flag: ask to use a credit card, an escrow service (PayPal) or another way to pay. Family Emergency Scams You get a call out of the blue from someone who claims to be a member of your family and needs cash to get out of a jam to fix a car, get out of jail or leave a foreign country. He begs you to wire money right away or to provide the card number to a prepaid money card and to keep the request confidential. Don't wire money or provide prepaid card numbers to: a stranger in this country or anywhere else someone claiming to be a relative in a crisis - and who wants to keep their

request for money a secret someone who says a money transfer is the only form of payment that's acceptable someone who asks you to deposit a check and send some of the money back Never wire money or provide prepaid card numbers to anyone in these or similar situations, they are all scams. If something like this is happening to you or you believe you are the victim of a crime please contact the Haverford Township Police Department by dialing 911 and ask to speak to an officer.
