POLICE DEPARTMENT

If you are uncomfortable with calling 911, or you feel that your call is not an emergency but you still need to speak with an officer, you can call the non-emergency dispatch number at: 610-647-1440. These calls will get important information to the emergency service provider, so they respond in a timely manner. This is the quickest way to get in contact with a police officer. Examples of calls would be check fraud, identity theft, mail fraud, animal complaints, lost or found items, noise complaints, wellbeing checks etc.

To call or not to call?

911 is a free emergency phone number used to request immediate assistance for emergency services—police, fire department, and emergency medical services. We want our residents to feel comfortable to call 911 when needed. Emergency services are available 24/7, and are here to serve the community. If you feel there is an emergency, don't hesitate to call. Medical emergencies, difficulty breathing, crime in progress, fire, injury, car accidents, suspicious conditions, missing person, or other emergent situations are reason to call 911.

Is Your Car Safe? If this message sounds familiar, that’s because it has been repeated in our newsletters many times. Automobiles are being broken into and robbed in increasing numbers up and down the Main Line, even in Easttown!

Why do you think that is happening? The answer is simple—vehicles are not locked. No forced entry, such as breaking windows, was needed by thieves. Once inside the vehicle, money and valuables (including garage door openers) are easily taken. Since access to the trunk can occur through the backseat of some models, the contents of your trunk are easily lifted. The solution to this proble is simple: lock you car even in your own driveway. You’ll be protecting one of your major investments with just the touch of a button.

House Check Program Summer is here and Autumn is comming and many of you are planning vacations or putting your home up for sale. The police department has a “house check” form you can complete for anytime your house will be vacant. You can either complete the form by phone or in person. It lets the police know when you’re leaving, when you’re returning and who is allowed to be in your house. You should also give a key to a trusted neighbor in case something should happen: let the police know who has the key! Here are some reminders to follow so your house is secure but will look “lived in” even while you’re away: 10

Make sure all doors and windows are looked and secured. Don’t leave valuables (cash, jewelry, etc.) in the house. Put them in a safe deposit box. Have lights and radios or television sets on timers to turn on and off at various times during the day and night. This gives the impression that someone is at home.

Ask a relative, friend or neighbor to check the house periodically to make certin all is secure. Make arrangement to have the grass cut and plants watered.

Why it's a problem and what we can do about it. Most of us are familiar with air, water, and land pollution, but did you know that light can also be a pollutant? Since Thomas Edison's patent of the tungsten lightbulb in 1906, artificial electric lighting has transformed our lives. But in the process, we have lost an important part of our human heritage: the night sky. Less than 100 years ago, most everyone could look up and see a spectacular starry night sky. Today 80% of Americans cannot see the Milky Way from their home. Over the last century, the increased or excessive and widespread use of artificial light at night has not only impaired our view of the universe but has adversely affected; the Earth's climate through human energy consumption. Light pollution is a major contributor to the climate crisis. Large amounts of electricity are needed to generate light, and electricity is often produced by burning fossil fuels. Uncontrolled outdoor lighting wastes energy. As much as 50% of outdoor lighting is wasted, increasing greenhouse gas emissions, and contributing to climate change.

Scientific research has linked light pollution to negative and deadly outcomes for many creatures including amphibians, birds, mammals, insects, and plants. For example, some nocturnal birds use the moon and stars for navigation during their migrations; and they can become disoriented when flying through brightly lit areas. Female sea turtles shy away from areas with bright lights, which interrupts their nesting patterns. Newly hatched turtles are so drawn to lights, so instead of heading to the ocean, they often end up on land instead.

Research suggests that artificial light at night can negatively affect human health as well, increasing risks for obesity, depression, sleep disorders, diabetes, and breast cancer. Scientists have also established a link between light pollution and air pollution. Light from our cities can destroy nitrate radicals that form at night that help to cleanse the air. In addition to the negative economic, environmental and health impacts associated with light pollution, we are losing a precious natural resource: our nighttime environment.

Outdoor lighting illuminates the sky, hiding the stars and changing how we experience the night. Despite a century of uncontrolled outdoor lighting, there are ways to combat light pollution that will make a difference right away. The West Chester Green Team is addressing the problem of light pollution by creating a local Dark Sky Initiative.
