KCCC AFJROTC Raider Competition to bring teams from across the region to Mount Vernon

trength, endurance, teamwork and determination will be on full display Saturday, Oct. 10, as Knox County Career Center’s Air Force Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (AFJROTC) hosts its annual Raider Competition from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at ArielFoundation Park. Expected to be the largest Raider Competition in Ohio, the event will bring AFJROTC teams together for a day of challenging, fast-paced events. The competition is free and open to the public, with food trucks available on site. Cadets will compete in events including a vehicle pull and tower climb, tire flip and pull-ups, litter carry, heavy-object carry, woodland trek and onerope bridge. Each challenge requires communication, planning, teamwork and determination. “The competition is about building our youth, not only physically, but mentally and emotionally,” said Lt. Col. Chris Salvucci, Senior Aerospace Science instructor at Knox County Career Center. “It gives cadets the chance to learn how to work together, push through adversity, and support one another when the challenge becomes difficult.” The KCCC Raider Competition has grown significantly since beginning as a small competition between two schools. Last year, 13 schools and 25 teams from Ohio and Pennsylvania participated. Beavercreek

High School’s A team won the overall championship, followed by Green High School’s A team and Beavercreek’s B team. KCCC’s A team finished fourth. The event’s continued growth is made possible through the support of students, families, alumni, community volunteers and partner organizations. Salvucci recognized AMVETS Post 95 and VFW Post 4027 for their sponsorship, as well as the Ohio Military Reserve, Ohio Army National Guard and U.S. Marine Corps for planning, judging, equipment and personnel support. “The awards are meaningful, but the greater value is watching cadets become stronger teammates and leaders,” Salvucci said. “They leave knowing they can do more than they thought they could.” The Raider Competition reflects AFJROTC’s mission of developing citizens of character through leadership, service and teamwork. The program is guided by the Air Force core values: Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence in All We Do. AFJROTC is open to Knox County students in grades 9-12 as a one-period elective, with no military commitment. For more information, visit www.knoxcc.org.
