COLUMBUS ROAD PROJECT

GET INVOLVED!

Knox County Habitat for Humanity is excited to announce the development of 12 new homes on Columbus Road in Mount Vernon in partnership with the Knox County Land Bank and Knox County Foundation. This ambitious project reflects our deep commitment to addressing the affordable housing crisis in our community and empowering families through safe, decent, and affordable homeownership.

Each home will be built in partnership with local families who invest sweat equity and work alongside volunteers and staff throughout the construction process. These homes are more than just buildings—they represent stability, opportunity, and a fresh start for hardworking families in Knox County.

The Columbus Road project is one of our largest undertakings to date and would not be possible without the incredible support of volunteers, donors, and community partners. Together, we are not just building houses—we are building a stronger, more connected community where everyone has a decent place to live.

Habitat for Humanity of Knox County strengthens communities by partnering with families to build safe, affordable homes.Through volunteer labor, donations, and community support, we create opportunities to achieve stability, strength, and self-reliance through affordable mortgages. Our Habitat ReStore also plays a vital role by selling new and gently used home goods, building materials, and furniture to support our mission.

Local Farm Turns LOVE OF GOATS into Skincare Business

ngry Acres Farm is a small but vibrant homestead located in Martinsburg, Ohio. Founded in 2012, the farm got its memorable name from a family joke about the wild, overgrown land they first encountered—brimming with thorny brambles and poison hemlock. What began as a five-acre challenge quickly blossomed into a passion-driven business centered around Nigerian Dwarf dairy goats.

By 2014, the farm welcomed its first goats, and by 2018, Angry Acres began handcrafting goat milk soap using milk from their own herd. After perfecting their recipe, the product line expanded to include bath bombs, shave soaps, beard balms, and more. Today, Angry Acres offers a full line of handmade, goat milk-based skincare products sold online, at the weekly farmers market, at select craft shows throughout the year, and in their store on the square in downtown Mount Vernon, which opened in spring 2024.

Chris and Savannah also do community events and educational programs throughout the year where families can meet the animals and learn more about goats and farm life. While they don’t open their farm to the public, they occasionally bring their goats to events on the square so folks can meet them up close. At the heart of the business are the goats themselves—well-cared-for animals raised with intention and love. What started as a family adventure has grown into a beloved local brand known for quality, humor, and a deep connection to the land and animals

‘Cue the Grill

Barbecue Spare Ribs

• 2 tablespoons paprika

• 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper

• 2 tablespoons garlic powder

• 1 tablespoon salt

• 1 teaspoon freshly ground black peppercorns

• 6 lbs. spare ribs, racks cleaned and trimmed

• 13 ounces barbecue sauce, low sugar, if possible

• 1 ounce at-leaf parsley, torn

1. Stir together the paprika, cayenne, garlic powder, salt, and pepper in a mixing bowl.

2. Thoroughly rub the spice mix into the rib racks. Place in a shallow dish, cover and chill for at least 8 hours.

3. After chilling, remove the ribs from the fridge. Preheat a gas or charcoal grill to about 300 F.

4. Cook the ribs on the grill, covered with a lid, until the meat is tender and pulls away from the bone, about 2 hours.

5. As the ribs cook, periodically brush them with some barbecue sauce, reserving any unused sauce.

6. When ready, remove the ribs from the grill and let them rest under aluminum foil for at least 10 minutes.

7. After resting, brush the ribs with any reserved barbecue sauce before cutting and serving with a garnish of parsley.
