FLOORING TODAY: WHAT’S NEW, WHAT WORKS,

AND WHAT HOMEOWNERS ARE CHOOSING!

Flooring is one of the most important decisions homeowners make during a remodel, and it’s also one of the most confusing. With so many new products on the market, people o en ask the same questions: What’s durable? What’s in style? What works in each room? And what will still make sense if we decide to sell?

e good news is that today’s ooring options o er more exibility, performance, and style than ever before. Advances in manufacturing have led to products that look great, handle daily wear, and t a wide range of lifestyles and budgets.

One of the most signi cant changes in recent years is the decline of “onesize- ts-all” ooring. Homeowners are choosing products based on how each space is used rather than installing the same material throughout the entire home.

What’s New in Flooring?

Modern ooring is designed to handle real life. Waterproof and scratch-resistant products have become the standard rather than the exception, especially in high-tra c homes.

Laminate ooring, in particular, has seen major improvements. New waterproof laminate products feature rigid cores, protective wear layers, and locking systems that resist moisture from spills and humidity. ey o er the look of real hardwood with far better resistance to scratching and everyday wear, making them a popular option for busy households.

Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) remains widely used because it’s fully waterproof, easy to maintain, and available in a wide range of styles. Tile has also evolved, with larger formats and more natural-looking nishes that mimic stone or wood while o ering durability and moisture resistance.

What’s Trending Right Now?

Homeowners are gravitating toward ooring that feels warm, natural, and timeless. Wood-look oors remain popular, but the focus has shi ed to so er tones and matte nishes that hide wear better over time. Wider planks and subtle textures are also common, helping oors feel more authentic and less “manufactured.”

Another trend is continuity. Many homeowners prefer fewer transitions between rooms, choosing compatible ooring products that ow nicely from kitchens into living spaces without sacri cing performance.

What Works Best by Room?

Kitchens, Bathrooms & Laundry Rooms

Water resistance is key in these spaces. LVP and waterproof laminate are

two of the most common choices because they stand up to spills, humidity, and frequent cleaning. Porcelain tile remains a reliable option, especially in bathrooms, but some homeowners prefer products that feel warmer and so er underfoot.

Basements

Basements require ooring that can handle moisture and temperature changes. LVP is one of the most popular basement choices due to its waterproof construction and comfort. Certain waterproof laminate products designed for below-grade installation are also being used more o en. Traditional hardwood is generally avoided in basements due to moisture concerns.

Living Areas & Bedrooms

ese spaces allow for more exibility. Engineered hardwood, laminate, and LVP are all common, depending on lifestyle and budget. Carpet is still used in bedrooms, particularly for homeowners who value warmth, sound absorption, and comfort.

Do People Still Use Carpet?

Yes — just di erently than in the past. Wall-to-wall carpet is no longer the default throughout the home, but it remains popular in bedrooms, bonus rooms, and nished basements where comfort matters most. Today’s carpets are more stain-resistant and durable, and many homeowners pair carpeted bedrooms with hard-surface ooring in common areas for a balanced approach.

Flooring Choices When Preparing to Sell

For homeowners considering resale, neutral, durable ooring choices tend to have the broadest appeal. Buyers are o en drawn to consistent ooring in main living areas, water-resistant materials in kitchens and baths, and lowmaintenance options they won’t need to replace right away.

Hard-surface ooring generally makes a strong impression, but comfort still matters. New carpet in bedrooms, paired with updated hard ooring elsewhere, o en feels like a practical and appealing combination.

What’s Considered “Normal” Now

ere’s no single correct answer — and that’s the biggest shi of all. Today’s “normal” is choosing ooring based on how you live. Durable, waterproof products in high-use areas, so er surfaces where comfort is key, and cohesive design choices that support both everyday living and long-term value.

Seeing ooring in person, comparing textures and nishes, and asking questions about performance can make the decision process much easier. Home shows allow homeowners to explore new products, talk through real-life scenarios, and nd ooring solutions that truly t their homes.

FINANCING YOUR REMODEL: SMART WAYS TO FUND YOUR HOME UPDATES

1. Cash & Savings: The Straightforward Option

If you have money set aside for home improvements, using cash is the simplest way to pay for your project. Paying upfront often gives you flexibility with contractors and materials, avoids interest charges, and can sometimes help with negotiating better pricing. Even if your refund won’t cover the entire project, it can serve as a substantial down payment.

2. Home Equity Loans & Lines of Credit (HELOCs)

Home equity options remain popular for larger projects. They allow you to borrow against the value of your home, often at lower interest rates than personal loans or credit cards.

• Home Equity Loan: Provides a lump sum with fixed interest and monthly payments. Great for projects with a clearly defined budget.

• HELOC: Functions more like a credit card with a revolving balance and variable interest. Offers flexibility if your project evolves or has unexpected costs.

These options can be beneficial for high-value remodels, like full kitchen or bathroom renovations.

3. Personal Loans & Lines of Credit

Personal loans or lines of credit are an alternative if you don’t want to tap home equity. They usually offer fixed interest rates and predictable payments, and they can be approved quickly. They’re often used for mid-sized projects, such as flooring upgrades, bathroom remodels, or backyard improvements.

4. Contractor Financing & Special Programs

Some contractors offer in-house financing or partner with lenders to provide flexible payment plans. This can include deferred payments or low-interest introductory periods.

• Be sure to read the fine print — understand interest rates, terms, and any penalties for early repayment.

• Using contractor financing can make a project more manageable if you’re trying to align payments with a tax refund or seasonal cash flow.

Spring is an ideal time for home improvements. Many homeowners start thinking about projects as the weather warms — and for some, that extra IRS refund can make a big difference. Whether it’s a kitchen upgrade, new flooring, or a backyard transformation, having a plan for financing your remodel helps ensure your project stays on track without stress.

5. Timing & Planning Around Your Tax Refund

For many homeowners, tax refund season coincides perfectly with home show season. A refund can serve as a down payment, supplement a loan, or cover the cost of more minor updates such as new flooring, lighting, or bathroom fixtures.

• Start by identifying which projects are priorities and which are “nice-to-haves.”

• Gather estimates from contractors at the show to determine how much funding you’ll need.

• Match financing options to your project timeline so work can begin as soon as you’re ready.

6. Tips for Smart Remodeling Financing

• Know your budget: Include materials, labor, and a cushion for unexpected costs.

• Compare interest rates: Even slight differences can add up on larger projects.

• Consider resale value: Focus spending on updates that improve comfort and long-term value.

• Use funds strategically: Combine savings, tax refunds, and financing to reduce reliance on high-interest options.

Tip: Many home show exhibitors are ready to discuss both project costs and financing options. Ask contractors if they have partnerships with lenders or flexible payment plans — seeing real numbers at the show can help you make an informed decision.

Backyard Living

Outdoor Spaces That Feel Like an Extra Room

Backyards are no longer just places for a grill and a patch of grass. Today’s homeowners are transforming outdoor spaces into extensions of their homes — fully functional areas for relaxing, entertaining, and enjoying life year-round. With thoughtful design and the right products, a backyard can become as comfortable and stylish as the rooms inside.

From Patio to Outdoor Living Room

Outdoor living isn’t limited to decks and patios anymore. Homeowners are creating spaces that feel like real rooms, complete with seating areas, dining zones, and even outdoor kitchens. Fire features, pergolas, and covered lounge areas extend usability into cooler months and rainy days, turning a simple backyard into a destination in its own right.

Comfort is key. Weather-resistant furniture, cushions, and rugs allow spaces to feel cozy while standing up to the elements. Many homeowners are adding outdoor lighting — from string lights and lanterns to integrated LED systems — to make the space more inviting at night. Just like indoor rooms, layered lighting creates atmosphere while keeping areas functional.

Outdoor Kitchens & Dining Areas

Cooking and dining outdoors have become central to backyard design. Modern outdoor kitchens range from simple built-in grills and prep surfaces to complete setups with sinks, refrigerators, and storage. By creating a dedicated outdoor cooking and dining area, homeowners can entertain without feeling con ned to the indoor kitchen. Durable materials such as stone, stainless steel, and weather-resistant composite cabinetry keep these areas functional and low-maintenance.

Dining areas are also evolving. Many homeowners opt for multi-use tables and seating that can accommodate small family dinners or larger gatherings. Weatherproof cushions, umbrellas, and pergolas add comfort and protection from the elements, making these spaces feel like an extension of the home’s living and entertaining areas.

Pools, Hot Tubs, and Fire Features

or replaces provide warmth and ambiance, allowing homeowners to enjoy the space even on cooler evenings. Proper placement and thoughtful design help these features feel integrated rather than “tacked on.”

Landscaping & Hardscaping That Works

Landscaping is no longer just about owers and grass. Pathways, retaining walls, planters, and privacy screens help de ne outdoor spaces and add structure. Hardscaping materials such as pavers, natural stone, and composite decking create functional surfaces while enhancing the look of the backyard. Combining hardscape and so scape elements can make an outdoor area feel like a true extension of the home’s interior, blending style and function seamlessly.

Technology & Modern Convenience

Technology isn’t just for inside the home anymore. Many homeowners are incorporating outdoor speakers, smart lighting, and weatherproof TVs to create entertainment-ready spaces. Motorized pergolas, retractable screens, and automated irrigation systems add convenience and usability, making the backyard easier to enjoy and maintain.

Making Outdoor Spaces Work for You

e key to successful backyard living is thinking about how you actually use the space. Entertaining, family time, or quiet retreats all have di erent needs — and the design should re ect that. Grouping areas by function, selecting durable materials, and integrating comfort features help homeowners create spaces that are not only beautiful but practical for everyday life.

Water and re features remain popular, but homeowners are using them in more versatile ways. Pools and hot tubs are o en paired with lounges, pergolas, and dining zones to create a cohesive outdoor “room.” Fire pits

Visiting home show exhibitors gives homeowners a chance to see these products and setups in person, ask questions, and gather ideas for their own backyards. From outdoor kitchens and lounge furniture to re features and landscaping solutions, there’s no better way to envision how a backyard can become a true extension of the home.

CAREERS IN CONSTRUCTION: BUILDING MORE THAN HOMES

When you walk through a home show, it’s easy to focus on the nished product—the beautiful kitchens, the smart layouts, the quality cra smanship. But behind every home, every addition, and every renovation is a team of people who chose construction as their career. For many, it’s more than just a job. It’s a way to build a solid future.

e construction industry o ers far more variety than most people realize. Some professionals work with their hands every day, shaping wood, installing systems, or running heavy equipment. Others manage projects, estimate costs, coordinate schedules, and make sure everything comes together the way it should. ere are also designers, engineers, and technicians who focus on how buildings function and perform over time. Whether someone enjoys being on the jobsite or working behind the scenes, there’s a role that ts.

One of the biggest reasons people are drawn to construction is opportunity. e demand for skilled workers is strong across residential, commercial, and infrastructure projects. New homes, remodels, schools, medical buildings, roads—these projects all rely on trained professionals. at demand creates job stability and long-term career potential. It also means there’s room to grow, move up, and specialize in areas that match your interests.

Construction careers are also known for solid earning potential. Many trades o er competitive wages right out of the gate, especially for those who complete apprenticeships or technical

training. As experience builds, so does income. Leadership and management roles can provide even greater nancial upside, along with the satisfaction of overseeing projects from start to nish.

Another bene t is how accessible the industry can be. Not every career path requires a four-year college degree. Many people start with a high school diploma, enter an apprenticeship, or learn on the job while getting paid. at “earn while you learn” model appeals to people who want real-world experience without taking on heavy student debt.

ere’s also something uniquely rewarding about seeing the results of your work. At the end of the day, you can point to a home, a room, or a structure and say, “I helped build that.” Few careers o er that kind of visible impact.

No matter the role, certain skills tend to show up again and again in successful construction professionals. Problem-solving, teamwork, attention to detail, and a strong work ethic go a long way. Add in technical know-how and a willingness to keep learning, and you have the foundation for a career that can last decades.

For students, career changers, or anyone looking for work that’s practical, respected, and full of opportunity, construction deserves a serious look.
